Rhode Island Aquaculturists' Perceptions Of Eco-Labeling Certification Programs, Nicole Deangelis Jan 2013

Rhode Island Aquaculturists' Perceptions Of Eco-Labeling Certification Programs, Nicole Deangelis

Open Access Master's Theses

Eco-labeling is a communication tool that allows producers to demonstrate to consumers that they comply with a set of environmental and social criteria by placing an eco-label on their product. Since global aquaculture production is increasing and bivalve mollusks comprise a large share of the world aquaculture production, eco-labeling certification has been suggested as a tool for creating a market for products that are produced with minimal negative environmental and social impacts. Because eco-labeling certification programs for bivalve aquaculture are currently voluntary in the United States, producers’ opinions of these programs influence their current and future involvement in these programs. …

Metabolism, Hypoxia Tolerance And Heat Shock Response Of Amphipods, Emphasizing The Hyperiid Amphipod Phronima Sedentaria, Leanne Elizabeth Elder Jan 2013

Metabolism, Hypoxia Tolerance And Heat Shock Response Of Amphipods, Emphasizing The Hyperiid Amphipod Phronima Sedentaria, Leanne Elizabeth Elder

Open Access Dissertations

This work investigates the ecophysiology of marine amphipods. Amphipods are an important part of the zooplankton community in the pelagic environment. Amphipods are a food source for a variety of fishes and also have a role in carbon cycling. Little is known about their physiology and how they have adapted to environmental variation.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that global warming is causing temperatures to rise throughout the world’s oceans, a trend that will continue with rising human carbon emissions. As temperature and CO2 levels increase, oceanic oxygen levels are predicted to decrease, and as a …

Are Full-Length Mrna In Bos Taurus Spermatozoa Transferred To The Oocyte During Fertilization?, Elizabeth Jane Anderson

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis focuses on the discovery of full-length mRNA transcripts in Bos taurus spermatozoa. The primary aim of this study is to identify and validate full-length mRNA primarily from RNA-Sequencing of bovine spermatozoa. The secondary aim is to determine if full-length spermatozoal transcripts are delivered to the oocyte at fertlilization, allowing for future studies to track their inheritance from paternal sources to the embryo. The main hypothesis of this thesis is that full-length mRNA transcripts exist within the spermatozoal transcript profile in Bos taurus. The secondary hypothesis is that if spermatozoal mRNA is functional after fertilization, then full-length transcripts …

Who Decides Who Decides In International Investment Arbitration?, Chiara Giorgetti Jan 2013

Who Decides Who Decides In International Investment Arbitration?, Chiara Giorgetti

Law Faculty Publications

The past twenty years have witnessed a dramatic rise in international adjudication, and especially in international investment arbitration. As international investment arbitration has become more prominent and pervasive, one of its fundamental tenets has come under fire: the practice of having the parties themselves nominate one or more of the arbitrators. Critics contend that party-appointed arbitrators are inherently biased and thus propose eliminating party-appointments altogether. In this article, I argue that moving away from party-appointed arbitrators is unwarranted and unwise, and would too radically transform international investment arbitration. Instead, I propose a simpler solution: adopting stricter arbitrator challenge rules and …

Gatekeeping Post-Uniloc: Expert Testimony In Multi-Component Patent Litigation, Erika Mayo Jan 2013

Gatekeeping Post-Uniloc: Expert Testimony In Multi-Component Patent Litigation, Erika Mayo

UC Law Business Journal

In recent years, the Federal Circuit has made an effort to rein in excessive or unfounded patent damages awards. In Uniloc v. Microsoft, the Federal Circuit granted a motion for retrial on the issue of damages, rejecting the validity of plaintiff’s damages expert testimony. This note advocates a broad reading of Uniloc and encourages trial courts to take a greater role in providing juries with sound methodology for assessing damages. Specifically, this article encourages the use of court-appointed damages experts to restore predictability in the U.S. patent system.

Thinking, Big And Small, Stephen B. Burbank Jan 2013

Thinking, Big And Small, Stephen B. Burbank

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Reading Kahneman's book and thinking about a tribute to Ed Cooper that has more substance than a bouquet have caused me to reflect on a phenomenon within the world of legal scholarship. I would call it a cognate phenomenon, but that would dishonor the empirical basis of Kahneman's work by suggesting a firmer basis for my reflections than the power of analogical reasoning. The phenomenon is the view that the goal of legal scholarship is or should be big ideas, particularly if they can claim the mantle of theory, rather than small ideas, particularly if they can be tarred with …

Is Now The Time For Simplified Rules Of Civil Procedure, Paul V. Niemeyer Jan 2013

Is Now The Time For Simplified Rules Of Civil Procedure, Paul V. Niemeyer

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Unfortunately, any objective evaluation of current federal civil process will inevitably lead to the conclusion that the process is functioning inadequately in its purpose of discharging justice speedily and inexpensively. One need only ask any trial lawyer whether he can try a medium-sized commercial dispute to judgment in a federal court in less than three years and at a cost of less than six figures. Is the iconic appellation of "making a federal case out of a dispute" not the ultimate condemnation of current judicial process in federal courts? Can we understand the private bar's flight from federal courts to …

Sex Differences In Adult Cognitive Deficits After Adolescent Nicotine Exposure In Rats, Laura R.G. Pickens, James D. Rowan, Rick A. Bevins, Stephen B. Fountain Jan 2013

Sex Differences In Adult Cognitive Deficits After Adolescent Nicotine Exposure In Rats, Laura R.G. Pickens, James D. Rowan, Rick A. Bevins, Stephen B. Fountain

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study was designed to determine whether deficits in adult serial pattern learning caused by adolescent nicotine exposure persist as impairments in asymptotic performance, whether adolescent nicotine exposure differentially retards learning about pattern elements that are inconsistent with “perfect” pattern structure, and whether there are sex differences in rats’ response to adolescent nicotine exposure as assessed by a serial multiple choice task. The current study replicated the results of our initial report (Fountain, Rowan, Kelley, Willey, & Nolley, 2008) using this task by showing that adolescent nicotine exposure (1.0 mg/kg/day nicotine for 35 days) produced a specific cognitive impairment in …

A Modification Of Freeze-Core Technology For Collecting Granular Fluvial Sediment Samples, David Charles Smith Jan 2013

A Modification Of Freeze-Core Technology For Collecting Granular Fluvial Sediment Samples, David Charles Smith

Masters Theses

"The presence of coarse grained sediment can potentially reduce the effectiveness of conventional sampling methods in recovering fluvial sediments. A modification to freeze-core technology was used to collect fine grained sediments for the purpose of characterizing the extent of heavy metal contamination in fluvial deposits that contain significant amounts of coarse-grained material such as cobbles and boulders. This material greatly reduces the effectiveness of conventional sampling methods. This method uses 2.5-cm and 2.9-cm diameter by 30-cm long finned samplers that were mechanically- and hand-driven into the ground. The sediment is frozen to the outside of the sampler by injecting liquid …

Role Of Nicotine In Oxidative Stress, Rakesh Kacham Jan 2013

Role Of Nicotine In Oxidative Stress, Rakesh Kacham

Masters Theses

"Nicotine, a major alkaloid, is present in tobacco products as well as in smaller amounts in potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. Although it is the addictive compound in cigarettes, nicotine is believed to play a protective role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Researchers have found that the short-term administration of nicotine may help improve the memory process by reducing oxidative stress in the brain. Our studies have shown that, by blocking Fenton's reaction, nicotine is able to inhibit free radical generation, so this research has focused on the antioxidant properties of nicotine. The cell lines of the alveoli, blood …

Justice League? Depictions Of Justice In Children’S Superhero Cartoons, Lisa A. Kort-Butler Jan 2013

Justice League? Depictions Of Justice In Children’S Superhero Cartoons, Lisa A. Kort-Butler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The literature argues that media depictions of criminal justice present messages that conform to and promote the dominant ideology about the crime problem and how to solve it. Research has focused on television news and adult programs, but little research has examined messages about justice present in children’s shows. To fill this gap, an ethnographic content analysis of children’s cartoons was conducted, using a sample of episodes from Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man, and Justice League Unlimited. Several themes emerged. First, the justice system is often depicted as ill equipped to handle serious crime. Second, story lines suggested that the …

Out On The Land: Income, Subsistence Activities, And Food Sharing Networks In Nain, Labrador, Kirk Dombrowski, Emily Channell, Bilal Khan, Joshua Moses, Evan Misshula

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In recent Inuit ethnography, a major concern has been how and to what extent contemporary Inuit participate in and depend on subsistence activities, particularly in the context of increasing wage employment and growing participation in the cash economy. This paper provides an analysis of these activities in the predominately Inuit community of Nain, Labrador. Using social network data and demographic information collected between January and June 2010, we examine the interconnections between subsistence activities—obtaining “country food” through activities such as hunting, fishing, and collecting—with access to the means of obtaining subsistence resources (such as snow mobiles, cabins, and boats), employment …

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Chapter 2 Behavior And Physiologyin The Development And Application Of Visual Deterrents At Airports, Bradley F. Blackwell, Esteban Fernandez-Juricic Jan 2013

Wildlife In Airport Environments: Chapter 2 Behavior And Physiologyin The Development And Application Of Visual Deterrents At Airports, Bradley F. Blackwell, Esteban Fernandez-Juricic

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In the first major treatise on the science of wildlife damage management, Conover (2002) dedicated a short review of visual stimuli used to deter wildlife from specific areas or resources. The brevity of the review reflects the fact that these techniques have traditionally been developed over short periods and used to confront an immediate problem, generally through trial and error. Because humans perceive visual stimuli differently than other animals (Schwab 2012), deterrents based on human perception likely fall short in saliency of the stimuli (Le., how well the stimuli stand out against a background). However, assessment of visual stimuli (both …
