Injunctions In Sovereign Debt Litigation, Mark C. Weidemaier, Anna Gelpern
Injunctions In Sovereign Debt Litigation, Mark C. Weidemaier, Anna Gelpern
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Injunctions against foreign sovereigns have come under criticism on comity and enforcement grounds. We argue that these objections are overstated. Comity considerations are important but not dispositive. Enforcement objections assign too much significance to the court’s inability to impose meaningful contempt sanctions, overlooking the fact that, when a foreign sovereign is involved, both money judgments and injunctions are enforced through what amounts to a court-imposed embargo. This embargo discourages third parties from dealing with the sovereign and, if sufficiently costly, can induce the sovereign to comply. Nevertheless, we are skeptical about injunctions in sovereign debt litigation. They are prone to …
Hawaii Comes Full Circle On Same-Sex Marriage, Joanna L. Grossman
Hawaii Comes Full Circle On Same-Sex Marriage, Joanna L. Grossman
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Hawaii is where it all started: the modern battle over same-sex marriage, that is. The strong likelihood that Hawaii would legalize same-sex marriage in the early 1990's spurred a nationwide backlash that would stall, but ultimately not prevent, the legalization of same-sex marriage elsewhere. Way back when, Hawaii did not legalize same-sex marriage. But twenty years later, it has done so, with a bill signed into law by Governor Neil Abercrombie this week. The circle is now complete.
In this column, I’ll describe Hawaii’s role at the beginning of the modern same-sex marriage controversy, its dramatic impact on state and …

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can either protect all seabed habitats within them or discrete features. If discrete features within the MPA are to be protected humans have to know where the boundaries are. In Lyme Bay, SW England a MPA excluded towed demersal fishing gear from 206 km(2) to protect rocky reef habitats and the associated species. The site comprised a mosaic of sedimentary and reef habitats and so 'non reef' habitat also benefited from the MPA. Following 3 years protection, video data showed that sessile Reef Associated Species (RAS) had colonised sedimentary habitat indicating that 'reef' was present. This …

Effect Of Replacing Dietary Fishmeal With Soy-Based Products On Production Performance Of Near Commercial Size Cobia, Rachycentron Canadum., Carlos E. Tudela
Open Access Theses
Fish meal replacement experiment was conducted with cobia above 1.77 ± 0.3 kg. The fish were fed one control diet and three experimental diets, for duration of 91 days. All diets were formulated isonitrogenous and isoenergetic and supplemented with amino acid mix. The control diet was similar to commercial diet formulations. Two experimental diets were formulated in which 67% of protein from fishmeal was replaced by: a) a combination of dehulled SBM+ Soy Protein Concentrate (Solae Profine®) labeled as MXSB diet, and b) a combination of Soy Protein Concentrate (Solae Profine®) + Schillinger Navita™ labeled Navita™ diet. In the Navita™ …

Successful memory involves not only remembering information over time, but also keeping memories distinct and less confusable. The computational process for making representations for similar input patterns more distinct from each other has been referred to as "pattern separation." In this work, we developed a set of behavioral conditions that allowed us to manipulate the load for pattern separation at different stages of memory. Thus, we provide experimental evidence that a brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-dependent pattern separation process occurs during the encoding/storage/consolidation, but not the retrieval stage of memory processing. We also found that a spontaneous increase in BDNF in …

Conditional Expression Of Tgf-Β1 In Skeletal Muscles Causes Endomysial Fibrosis And Myofibers Atrophy, Jigna Narola, Sachchida Nand Pandey, Adam Glick, Yi-Wen Chen

To study the effects of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) on fibrosis and failure of regeneration of skeletal muscles, we generated a tet-repressible muscle-specific TGF-β1transgenic mouse in which expression of TGF-β1 is controlled by oral doxycycline. The mice developed muscle weakness and atrophy after TGF-β1 over-expression. We defined the group of mice that showed phenotype within 2 weeks as early onset (EO) and the rest as late onset (LO), which allowed us to further examine phenotypic differences between the groups. While only mice in the EO group showed significant muscle weakness, pathological changes including endomysial fibrosis and smaller …

Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex 398 (CC398) isolates cluster into two distinct phylogenetic clades based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealing a basal human clade and a more derived livestock clade. The scn and tet(M) genes are strongly associated with the human and the livestock clade, respectively, due to loss and acquisition of mobile genetic elements. We present canonical single-nucleotide polymorphism (canSNP) assays that differentiate the two major host-associated S. aureus CC398 clades and a duplex PCR assay for detection of scn and tet(M). The canSNP assays correctly placed 88 S. aureusCC398 isolates from a reference collection into …

Toxoplasma gondii establishes a chronic infection by forming cysts preferentially in the brain. This chronic infection is one of the most common parasitic infections in humans and can be reactivated to develop life-threatening toxoplasmic encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Host-pathogen interactions during the chronic infection include growth of the cysts and their removal by both natural rupture and elimination by the immune system. Analyzing these interactions is important for understanding the pathogenesis of this common infection. We developed a differential equation framework of cyst growth and employed Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) to determine the growth and removal functions that best describe …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
There hasn't been all that much righteous indignation from the lands of historians and the historically inclined public. I'd wager they just haven't noticed. I was a little surprised, to be honest. As soon as I hit play on Stephen Colbert's rendition of the Gettysburg Address, part of Ken Burns' Learn the Address marketing initiative for his upcoming documentary, I figured the flame war was inevitable. BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine effects of amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, on development of angiotensin II (AngII)-induced vascular pathologies.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Male LDL receptor -/- mice were infused with vehicle, amlodipine (5 mg/kg/d), AngII (1,000 ng/kg/min), or AngII + amlodipine for 4 weeks through osmotic pumps (n=10/group). Mice were fed a saturated fat-enriched diet for 1 week prior to pump implantation and during 4 weeks of infusion. Infusion of amlodipine resulted in plasma concentrations of 32 ± 2 ng/ml and 27 ± 2 ng/ml for mice in saline + amlodipine and AngII + …

Analysis Of Sry Duplications On The Rattus Norvegicus Y-Chromosome, Jeremy W. Prokop, Adam C. Underwood, Monte E. Turner, Nic Miller, Dawn Pietzrak, Sarah Scott, Chris Smith, Amy Milsted
Biology Faculty Research
Background: Gene copy number variation plays a large role in the evolution of genomes. In Rattus norvegicus and other rodent species, the Y-chromosome has accumulated multiple copies of Sry loci. These copy number variations have been previously linked with changes in phenotype of animal models such as the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). This study characterizes the Y-chromosome in the Sry region of Rattus norvegicus, while addressing functional variations seen in the Sry protein products. Results: Eleven Sry loci have been identified in the SHR with one (nonHMG Sry) containing a frame shift mutation. The nonHMGSry is found and conserved in …
