Formulation Of Invariants For Discrete Orthogonal Moments And Image Classification / Pee Chih Yang, Chih Yang Pee

Student Works (2010-2019)

The aim of this thesis is to study invariant algorithms for the domain of discrete orthogonal moments. The invariants are anisotropic scale and translation invariants, translation, rotation and scale invariants, and affine moment invariants. Due to the complexity of hypergeometric functions, existing invariant algorithms are slow. In addition, some of the features have poor classification performance and are highly sensitive to the noise. Therefore new sets of invariant algorithms have been proposed to resolve the above mentioned issues. Discrete Tchebichef moments are selected as the implementation platform of the proposed algorithms. To evaluate the performance of invariant algorithms, empirical studies have …

Negotiating Successfully In Asia, Michael Benoliel Jan 2013

Negotiating Successfully In Asia, Michael Benoliel

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Cross-cultural negotiations are complex, challenging, and difficult to navigate because much of the Asian culture is unstated, implicit, and internalized in subtle behavioral patterns. It is like an iceberg; more is invisible and less is visible. To understand how the Asian negotiation values and practices are different from those in the West, I describe briefly the Asian cultural roots, highlight the major dimensions that differentiate cultures, explore the factors that influence the Asian negotiation processes and outcomes, and provide a list of practical suggestions for negotiating successful deals with Asian negotiators.

Student Works (2010-2019)

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and among them, lung and breast cancers have mortality rates of 1.4 million and 400,000 deaths each year respectively. This is due to the current chemotherapies that are still far from ideal and hence, alternative treatments founded in a ‘back-to-nature’ approach might yield improved treatment avenues. The genus Phyllanthus is a rainy season weed that has been exploited for various medicinal usages due to the presence of abundant polyphenol compounds in the plant that can be broadly grouped into ellagitannins, gallotannins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Therefore, the aim of the current …

Endothelial Protective Activity Of Boldine In Animal Models Of Hypertension And Diabetes Mellitus / Lau Yeh Siang, Yeh Siang Lau

Student Works (2010-2019)

Free radical-induced oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of a number of human diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction, usually assessed as decreased endothelium-dependent vasodilation, precedes clinically before obvious vascular pathologies and together with oxidative stress are major predictors of disease progression. Such endothelial dysfunction is observed early in the development of the pathology and is due, at least in part, to an excessive vascular formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in particular superoxide anion (O2−), which reduce nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. Epidemiological and clinical studies have demonstrated that a growing list of natural products, …

Mechanistic Reasoning Of Selected Form Four Science Students On The Theory Of Cell / Lee Shuh Shing, Shuh Shing Lee

Student Works (2010-2019)

Understanding the causal mechanisms that underlie natural phenomena is the focus of biological inquiry. Mechanistic reasoning is a thought process as to how a cause brings about an effect. Without this skill, students find it hard to explain various biological processes, for example such as those related to cells. However, research has shown that many teachers believe that it is inappropriate in trying to infuse mechanistic reasoning among the low achieving students as compared to the high achieving ones. Thus, the overall aim of this study was to explore in depth, selected Form Four high and low achieving students’ mechanistic …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The ability of animals to disperse towards their original home range following displacement has been demonstrated in a number of species. However, little is known about the homing ability of three-spine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), an important model species in behavioural ecology. In addition, few studies have examined the role of social facilitation in relation to homing behaviour in fishes. We examined homing behaviour of sticklebacks displaced over distances of between 80 m and 160 m in land-drains with directional water flow. Fish were translocated from their original capture site, tagged and then released either in groups or solitarily. We performed …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Motion analysis is one of the tools available to biologists to extract biologically relevant information from image datasets and has been applied to a diverse range of organisms. The application of motion analysis during early development presents a challenge, as embryos often exhibit complex, subtle and diverse movement patterns. A method of motion analysis able to holistically quantify complex embryonic movements could be a powerful tool for fields such as toxicology and developmental biology to investigate whole organism stress responses. Here we assessed whether motion analysis could be used to distinguish the effects of stressors on three early developmental stages …
