Introduction, Cynthia Cox

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

In establishing the focus for its Fall 2013 program, Belmont University’s Humanities Symposium committee asserted, “Regardless of origin or location, we often assume our own cultural practices are the norm, and the only way to dislodge such belief is to invest in another person’s viewpoint.

From Automatons To Doppelgängers: A Spectrum From “Utterly Foreign” To “Exactly Me”, Mélanie Walton Jan 2013

From Automatons To Doppelgängers: A Spectrum From “Utterly Foreign” To “Exactly Me”, Mélanie Walton

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

“Encountering otherness” is a prescription that we hope will cure all narrow perceptions of reality, will induce a capacity of seeing the world through the eyes of the other, will cultivate an empathy that permits us understanding and acceptance, and will inculcate a multi-dimensional seeing of the world. That is, the hope beneath the promotion of encounter of otherness is that it will reveal the many dimensions of every event, multiply our perspectives, and enrich the depth of our understanding. This prospectus is born from the premise that a richer view of reality will found an actual reality that is …

When “The Other” Is Wild At Heart: Can Human Predators Learn From Prey Animals?, Judy Skeen

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

As humans living in the western world in 2013, we are surrounded by opportunities to learn from those who are different from us. Diversity has become a welcome awareness for our institutions and relationships. Our central question for today is: what might we learn if we included in that view those creatures that are oriented differently toward survival and existence? I invite you to focus with me on the learning that is possible if predators step back and observe before interacting with prey animals.

The Story Of Grandpa Mendez: His Grandchildren, Alicia Ruth Mendez Jan 2013

The Story Of Grandpa Mendez: His Grandchildren, Alicia Ruth Mendez

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

I set out to collect oral histories from as many Mendez cousins as possible. Most of these stories were told over the phone. While I did ask certain questions of everyone, my main goal was to gather commonalities among our memories. What were the qualities that stood out in stories about Grandpa?

Mcfadden Family Farm, Misty Wellman Jan 2013

Mcfadden Family Farm, Misty Wellman

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

Families are forever. Their stories should be too, especially in these modern days of transient and rootless societies. The functions of family stories are much more complex than offering little tots a laugh or taking adults on a stroll down memory lane. Their functions are not only to preserve the family history and strengthen family bonds, but also “to express regional, family and personal identity…teach values, develop a shared humor, and shape a collective experience…” (Zeitlin, Kotkin and Baker n.p.). Family folklore binds families together and creates root systems that both anchor each individual firmly to tradition and create a …

Modeling Of Biorefinery Supply Chain Economic Performance With Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph S. Amundson Jan 2013

Modeling Of Biorefinery Supply Chain Economic Performance With Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph S. Amundson

Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering

As competition for fossil fuels accelerates, alternative sources of chemicals, fuels, and energy production become more appealing to researchers and the layman. Among the candidates to fill this growing niche is lignocellulosic biomass. Many researchers have examined supply chain design and optimization for biofuel and bioenergy production throughout the years. However, these models often fail to capture the variability and uncertainty inherent to the biomass supply chain. Multiple factors with high degrees of stochasticity can have major impacts on the performance of a biorefinery: weather, biomass quality, feedstock availability, and market demand for products are just a few. To begin …

Grammatical Typology And Frequency Analysis: Number Availability And Number Use, Dunstan Brown, Greville G. Corbett, Sebastian Fedden, Andrew R. Hippisley, Paul Marriott Jan 2013

Grammatical Typology And Frequency Analysis: Number Availability And Number Use, Dunstan Brown, Greville G. Corbett, Sebastian Fedden, Andrew R. Hippisley, Paul Marriott

Linguistics Faculty Publications

The Smith-Stark hierarchy, a version of the Animacy Hierarchy, offers a typology of the cross-linguistic availability of number. The hierarchy predicts that the availability of number is not arbitrary. For any language, if the expression of plural is available to a noun, it is available to any noun of a semantic category further to the left of the hierarchy. In this article we move one step further by showing that the structure of the hierarchy can be observed in a statistical model of number use in Russian. We also investigate three co-variates: plural preference, pluralia tantum and irregularity effects; these …

Multifactorial Modulation Of The Blood-Brain Barrier: Relationship To Stroke, Bei Zhang Jan 2013

Multifactorial Modulation Of The Blood-Brain Barrier: Relationship To Stroke, Bei Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a dynamic interface, mainly consisting of highly specialized brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) that segregate the central nervous system (CNS) from the peripheral circulation. Impairment of the BBB, due to disruption of tight junction (TJ) proteins and inflammatory responses, may initiate and/or contribute to the progress of CNS disorders, including stroke. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. It has been shown that aging and environmental pollutants can induce brain endothelium dysfunction, and are considered as risk factors for stroke.

Deficiency of telomerase is highly linked with aging-associated vascular diseases. Evidence indicates that …

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Ligands Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Promote Adipocyte-Mediated Diabetes, Nicki A. Baker Jan 2013

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Ligands Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Promote Adipocyte-Mediated Diabetes, Nicki A. Baker

Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences

Numerous epidemiology studies suggest a correlation between exposures to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and the development and severity of type 2 diabetes (T2D); however, mechanisms remain largely unknown. Previous studies demonstrated that PCBs that are ligands of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) promote the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), that are linked to insulin resistance in adipocytes. To explore potential mechanisms linking PCB exposures to diabetes, we developed a mouse model of glucose and insulin intolerance induced by acute and chronic exposures to PCB-77. We hypothesized that PCB ligands of AhR result in adipocyte-specific elevations in TNF-α …

Coplanar Pcb-Induced Inflammation And Dietary Interventions, Katryn Elizabeth Eske Jan 2013

Coplanar Pcb-Induced Inflammation And Dietary Interventions, Katryn Elizabeth Eske

Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences

Diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), are linked to chronic low levels of inflammation. This inflamed state is the product of risk factors including exposure to environmental pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are correlated with increased risk for CVD and diabetes. In response to this health risk, our research addresses the mechanisms by which coplanar PCBs elicit an inflammatory response and the mitigation of PCB-induced inflammation through dietary intervention using docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 lipid. Investigators from the University of Kentucky Engineering Department are developing remediation technologies that detoxify PCBs through dechlorination. We studied the cellular toxicity …

Dios Mio: The Kiss Principle Of The Ethical Approach To Copyright And Right Of Publicity Law, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

To copy or not to copy, to exploit the famous celebrity image or not to exploit it; these are the questions. The message of the modern legal world communicated through multiple voices in the academy is that copying often is perfectly acceptable and even laudable. An artist or designer might conclude that it is both legal and ethical to use whatever you can, use whatever you can get away with, and use it until you get sued for using it. Yet plagiarism in the arts and sciences is nearly universally condemned. This Article proposes an ethical approach to the use …

Sages, Savages, And Other Speech Act Communities: Culture In Comparative Law, Monica Eppinger Jan 2013

Sages, Savages, And Other Speech Act Communities: Culture In Comparative Law, Monica Eppinger

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This Article re-examines the possible utility of the concept of culture in comparative law. It reviews some limits and misuses of the concept of culture and introduces a components approach to using it in comparative analysis. First presented at a Symposium inspired by Laurence Tribe’s The Invisible Constitution, the Article takes up a key question emerging from Tribe’s work: How does a constitution constitute? Two conceptual tools from anthropology and sister disciplines, performative speech acts and performance theory, lend insight into how discourse produces literal meaning and, in parallel, produces and reproduces speech act communities. Having introduced a components …

Challenging Pre-Service Students' Teaching Perspectives In An Inquiry-Focused Program, J. L. Pecore, A. Shelton Jan 2013

Challenging Pre-Service Students' Teaching Perspectives In An Inquiry-Focused Program, J. L. Pecore, A. Shelton

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Inquiry teaching based on constructivist learning theory has been an emphasis in pre-service education for over a decade. In general, a developmental teaching perspective supports inquiry-based instruction where teachers view learners as constructors of knowledge and teaching as providing questions, problems, and challenges that form a bridge from the learners' prior knowledge to a new, more sophisticated form of reasoning. Since teaching perspectives influence student learning, teacher effectiveness, and teacher attrition, challenging pre-service teachers to overcome experience-based convictions of a transmission perspective is necessary in teacher education. In this study, we examined the teaching perspectives of secondary, pre-service methods students …

Brief For The Honorable Congressman John Lewis As Amicus Curiae In Support Of Respondents And Intervenorrespondents, Deborah N. Archer, Tamara Belinfanti, Erika L. Wood, New York Law School Racial Justice Project

Briefs, Court Filings, and Testimonies

JANUARY 2013

Amicus Curiae, Congressman John Lewis, is the United States Representative of Georgia's Fifth Congressional District, which includes the entire city of Atlanta, Georgia and parts of Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties.1 He has served in this capacity since January 1987. Congressman Lewis has a continued interest in the development and protection of laws that guard against racial discrimination and promote social and political equality for all Americans. Today, political historians and constitutional scholars acknowledge that the main impetus for President Lyndon Johnson submitting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to Congress on March 15, 1965, and its passage …
