To investigate the molecular basis of the emergence of Aeromonas hydrophila responsible for an epidemic outbreak of motile aeromonad septicemia of catfish in the Southeastern United States, we sequenced 11 A. hydrophila isolates that includes five reference and six recent epidemic isolates. Comparative genomics revealed that recent epidemic A. hydrophila isolates are highly clonal, whereas reference isolates are greatly diverse. We identified 55 epidemic-associated genetic regions with 313 predicted genes that are present in epidemic isolates but absent from reference isolates and 35% of these regions are located within genomic islands, suggesting their acquisition through lateral gene transfer. The epidemic-associated …

Coexistence Despite Recruitment Inhibition Of Kelps By Subtidal Algal Crusts, Daniel K. Okamoto, Michael Stekoll, Ginny L. Eckert Nov 2013

Coexistence Despite Recruitment Inhibition Of Kelps By Subtidal Algal Crusts, Daniel K. Okamoto, Michael Stekoll, Ginny L. Eckert

Faculty, Staff, and Students

In temperate subtidal reefs, kelp species often dominate light, while encrusting algae often dominate the substrate and are well adapted to low light conditions. Yet whether changes in algal crust cover impact recruitment dynamics of kelp species remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we combined field surveys with laboratory and field experiments to investigate (1) the impact of algal crusts on kelp settlement and recruitment and (2) the potential effect such inhibition may have on density of subtidal kelps in a southeast Alaskan fjord. Experimental removal of algal crusts in the field resulted in dense kelp recruitment, whereas in …

Entomology Faculty Publications

Macrocyclic lactones such as abamectin and ivermectin constitute an important class of broad-spectrum insecticides. Widespread resistance to synthetic insecticides, including abamectin and ivermectin, poses a serious threat to the management of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), a major pest of cruciferous plants worldwide. P-glycoprotein (Pgp), a member of the ABC transporter superfamily, plays a crucial role in the removal of amphiphilic xenobiotics, suggesting a mechanism for drug resistance in target organisms. In this study, PxPgp1, a putative Pgp gene from P. xylostella, was cloned and characterized. The open reading frame (ORF) of PxPgp1 consists of 3774 …

Novel Pancreatic Cancer Cell Lines Derived From Genetically Engineered Mouse Models Of Spontaneous Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: Applications In Diagnosis And Therapy., María P. Torres, Satyanarayana Rachagani, Joshua J. Souchek, Kavita Mallya, Sonny L. Johansson, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Pancreatic cancer (PC) remains one of the most lethal human malignancies with poor prognosis. Despite all advances in preclinical research, there have not been significant translation of novel therapies into the clinics. The development of genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models that produce spontaneous pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) have increased our understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease. Although these PDAC mouse models are ideal for studying potential therapies and specific genetic mutations, there is a need for developing syngeneic cell lines from these models. In this study, we describe the successful establishment and characterization of three cell lines derived from two …

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt Nov 2013

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the literature regarding the use of acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) in clinical applications of imaging, embolic therapy, and therapeutic delivery. ADV is a physical process in which the pressure waves of ultrasound induce a phase transition that causes superheated liquid nanodroplets to form gas bubbles. The bubbles provide ultrasonic imaging contrast and other functions. ADV of perfluoropentane was used extensively in imaging for preclinical trials in the 1990s, but its use declined rapidly with the advent of other imaging agents. In the last decade, ADV was proposed and explored for embolic occlusion therapy, drug delivery, aberration correction, …

Inter-Religious Contexts And Comparative Theology In The Thought Of Evelyn Underhill: Symbolic Narratives Of Mysticism And The Songs Of Kabīr, Michael Stoeber

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) regards mysticism as the core of religion. All religions include various dimensions: scripture/ mythology, doctrine/ philosophy, ethics/ law, social/institutional features, ritual, material aspects, and personal and communal experience. For Underhill, personal religious experience inspires and influences the development of these other aspects of religion—the heart of which is mysticism. Underhill asserts: “The mystics are the pioneers of the spiritual world” (4); “Mysticism is the art of union with Reality”.

Māyā, Āṇava Mala And Original Sin: A Comparative Study, Nathan Halloran Sj Nov 2013

Māyā, Āṇava Mala And Original Sin: A Comparative Study, Nathan Halloran Sj

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

“The longing for grace in Hinduism,” argues Bishop Sabapathy Kulandran, “springs more often from the desire to solve a metaphysical problem than from an agony tearing at one’s inmost being.” For this reason, a Hindu seeks liberation from a metaphysical situation, a feeling of impurity, rather than redemption from sin. Yet as Christian thinking on the doctrine of original sin has developed, it has more and more come to understand original sin as denoting first and foremost a cosmic reality, a metaphysical situation, in some ways very similar to the metaphysical impurity of the Śaiva Siddhānta notion of āṇava mala. …

Christians And Vedic Sacrifice: Comparing Communitarian Sacrificial Soteriologies, Christopher Denny Nov 2013

Christians And Vedic Sacrifice: Comparing Communitarian Sacrificial Soteriologies, Christopher Denny

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Can there be a constructive Christian appropriation of understandings of religious sacrifice from another religious tradition? As far back as the first-century letter to the Hebrews, Christians defined the efficacy of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice over and against previous sacrifices in the Temple in Jerusalem, and in subsequent centuries have argued that Christ’s sacrifice is an unrepeatable historical act manifesting God’s favor to human beings. Unless Christian theologians are willing to take the path of liberal pluralism and concede that the sacrifice offered through Jesus of Nazareth is one species within a genus of soteriological possibilities, an epiphenomenon of an underlying …

Editor's Introduction, Bradley Malkovsky

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Since its appearance in late 2011 Rajiv Malhotra’s Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism (HarperCollins India) has provoked strong reactions among its readers, both within and outside the academy. Malhotra challenges what he calls Western scholarship’s “grand narrative” of religion with its self-serving presumption of the superiority of the Judaeo-Christian worldview over the “dharmic” perspective of the Indian religions, i.e. of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Response Of Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Differing At The P Locus For Plant Colour, To Grain Mould And Head Smut Fungi, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, L. K. Prom, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Leaves and stalks of many sorghum genotypes accumulate dark red or purple pigments upon wounding while some plants, called ‘tan,’ do not. Grains with unpigmented ‘white’ pericarps grown on tan plants are more desirable for food. The hypothesis tested was that pigments in plants protected grain against the panicle diseases grain mould and head smut. Near-isogenic tan or purple plant color genotypes with white grain were planted at Lincoln and Ithaca, NE and Corpus Christi, TX. The field grown grain was plated onto semi-selective media to detect the presence of grain colonisation by mould genera Alternaria, Fusarium and Curvularia. …

Leveraging Apple Remote Desktop To Facilitate Classroom Critiques Of Digital Projects, Jerry C. Schnepp Nov 2013

Leveraging Apple Remote Desktop To Facilitate Classroom Critiques Of Digital Projects, Jerry C. Schnepp

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Classroom critiquing of visual projects is an essential exercise to help students refine their work. Usually, instructors display student work on a large screen so that the class can offer comments and suggestions. However, problems arise because critiques are often mired by ambiguous or misunderstood language. Sometimes students are better shown than told. This presentation demonstrates how Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) can be used to project the display of any lab computer while the instructor and student share control. The student’s work can be interactively modified during a critique session, resulting in an engaging experience for the entire class.
