International Conference On The Great Lakes Region (Ic/Glr): Inception, Process And Achievements, Richard Sezibera
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The Nairobi Pact of October 15th, 2006 on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region is achieved through long effort and process in the framework of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. This paper attempts to highlight the conditions of its inception and formulation process. However, in order to go beyond the achievements in policy formulations, the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region requires a great commitment of leaders and peoples of the region as well as the international solidarity.

Understanding The Conflicts In The Great Lakes Region: An Overview, Anastase Shyaka
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
This paper discusses factors underlying internal and international conflicts in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. The systematic analysis of causal factors focuses on the following: Colonial legacy; inadequate political systems and political parties' cleavages; poor management of transitions and foreign negative interferences. It argues that the combination of these factors has led to the recurrence of conflicts and ineffectiveness of peace building instruments. The paper argues further that for sustaining peace and security in the region, there is a need for a paradigm shift in internal and international politics: First, local peace imperatives must prevail over geopolitical interests of …

The Relationship Of Food And Academic Performance: A Preliminary Examination Of The Factors Of Nutritional Neuroscience, Malnutrition, And Diet Adequacy, Allison Woodhouse, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D.
Christian Perspectives in Education
This article examines the extent of food’s impact on children’s academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to summarize existing research concerning the food-learning correlation and to synthesize studies regarding nutritional needs of the brain, malnutrition during development, and overall diet quality as related to academic achievement. Data finds a fundamental link between nutrition and cognition. Results suggest to the extent the brains of many United States schoolchildren do not receive the nutrients needed for optimal cognition, that academic performance may be consequentially reduced. Finally, a discussion of related learning theory and current debate, and practical implications for educational …

Biology Faculty Member's Article On Exotic Plants Appears In Ecology Letters, Winthrop University
Winthrop News 2012
- In his paper, Matt Heard notes that there has been little experimental fieldwork conducted to determine what factors allows native and exotic plants to live side by side.
- While there have been many potential explanations tossed out, it turns out that just being different is the main reason that they can actually coexist together.

The Applied Psychology Of Harry Hollingworth: Roots In The Great Plains, Volume 1, Harry Hollingworth, Ludy T. Benjamin, Lizette Royer-Barton
University of Akron Press Publications
Harry Levi Hollingworth was one of the pioneers in the field known today as industrial-organizational psychology. He was the author of more than twenty books and a hundred scientific and theoretical articles. His honors were many, including serving as President of the American Psychological Association in 1927. In 1940, at the age of 60 and partly initiated by the sudden death of his wife, Hollingworth took stock of his life in an autobiography that focused on his origins and development in rural Nebraska and his subsequent career as a psychologist at Columbia University. For the first time, this autobiography is …

Student Loan Debt, Steven D. Dolvin
Student Loan Debt, Steven D. Dolvin

Obviously real estate was the focus of the recent credit (or subprime) crisis. However, many investors believe that student loan debt, which is also bundled and sold (i.e., collateralized), is the next "crisis" area. Student debt has risen substantially, as has the percentage of borrowers in delinquency. See these two articles: Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
Insider Trading, Steven D. Dolvin
Insider Trading, Steven D. Dolvin

Insider trading (i.e., trading on material nonpublic information) is illegal. However, corporate executives are allowed to trade stock in the firms they manage. This is difficult to reconcile since these executives, in all likelihood, have such information. A recent study by the Wall Street Journal found that executives trading ahead of corporate earnings announcements earned substantially higher returns (or avoided substantially lower losses). See article here.
