Carbon Nanomaterial Based Vapor Sensors., Silpa Kona Dec 2012

Carbon Nanomaterial Based Vapor Sensors., Silpa Kona

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of carbon nanotubes and subsequently graphene has led to an interest in carbon materials as sensing elements due to their unique properties. Graphene is a 2-dimensional material that has a large surface area that can be exposed to surface adsorbates from a target gas. This enables studies on the interaction of gas molecules with the graphene surface and subsequent changes in its properties. Graphene also exhibits high conductivity and low noise and has low crystal defects. Due to its high electron mobility at room temperature, graphene exhibits high sensitivity (in tune of detecting ppm) which is a required …

Role Of Human Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase In Carcinogen Metabolism And Human Breast Cancer Progression., Carmine Simone Leggett Dec 2012

Role Of Human Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase In Carcinogen Metabolism And Human Breast Cancer Progression., Carmine Simone Leggett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) is a phase II cytosolic enzyme that occurs as two isozymes, NAT1 and NAT2. This family of polymorphic enzymes catalyzes the detoxification and/or activation of many aromatic and heterocyclic amine drugs and carcinogens. These metabolism reactions can lead to detoxification of xenobiotics by N-acetylation, or bioactivation by O-acetylation which is preceded by cytochrome P450 (CYP) hydroxylation. This study evaluates the role of human arylamine N-acetyltransferase in carcinogen metabolism as it pertains to substrate selectivity, kinetic activity towards arylamine and alkylaniline substrates, and toxicological risk. Here we introduce the use of immortalized human fibroblasts (GM4429) to investigate …

Improved Fabrication And Modeling Of Piezoresistive Microcantilever Beams For Gas Detection And Sensing., Ni Wang Dec 2012

Improved Fabrication And Modeling Of Piezoresistive Microcantilever Beams For Gas Detection And Sensing., Ni Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Symmetric piezoresistive microcantilever beams have been demonstrated in previous research to be capable of sensing the presence of surrounding gas. This occurs as the damping effect of the gas changes the beam resonance behavior. Device sensitivity has been increased dramatically after changing the symmetric beam base to an asymmetric beam base. This dissertation seeks to improve on beam fabrication and simplify the fabrication procedure compared to earlier approaches. By changing to a polymer mask and using new equipment, an entire wafer can be fabricated in far less time compared to the previous approach. While this new approach shows great promise, …

Application Of Linear Mixed-Effects Models To Crossover Designs., Lei Zhou Dec 2012

Application Of Linear Mixed-Effects Models To Crossover Designs., Lei Zhou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Crossover design is a type of longitudinal study with each subject receiving different treatments in different time periods. It has been used frequently in the pharmaceutical industry and other medical fields to investigate the safety and efficacy of new drugs or new treatments. For crossover studies, the treatment effects from the earlier period may be carried over to the later period, which is called the carry-over effect, the response may naturally change over different periods. How to assess treatment effect with accounting for all these features deserves further investigation. Linear mixed-effects (LME) model has been widely applied to analyze data …

Second Year College Experiences That Affect Persistence And Attrition For First Generation And Continuing Generation Students At Small, Private Institutions., Angela Brown Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The persistence and attrition of second year college students is a growing concern of colleges and universities as second year college students face some of the greatest challenges (Gahagan & Hunter, 2006; Lemons & Richmond, 1987; Morgan & Davis, 1981; Wilder, 1993). This study examined the factors that predict second year student persistence for students who have enrolled at private institutions in the state of Kentucky. This study reviewed those pre-entry variables that predict persistence beyond the second year. Students were surveyed (during the end of) their fourth semester in college. Spady's (1970b) model of student dropout and Tinto's (1975) …

Anxiety In Older Adults With Dementia Residing In Long-Term Care Facilities., Lauren Summer Hess Dec 2012

Anxiety In Older Adults With Dementia Residing In Long-Term Care Facilities., Lauren Summer Hess

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dementia, depression, and anxiety are the most common psychiatric disorders among long-term care residents and, because dementia is associated with behavioral problems that can be difficult to manage, the growing number of long-term care residents with dementia and mental health disorders presents a challenge for providing quality care. Research has established the co-occurrence of depression and anxiety and anxiety and agitation in this population. However, a consensus on the conceptualization of the co-occurrence of these constructs has not been reached. It has also been postulated that older adults with dementia may not be able to experience anxiety as conceptualized due …

Self-Efficacy In The Context Of Psychological Abuse: A Model Of Efficacy Erosion., Kristen E. Hosey Dec 2012

Self-Efficacy In The Context Of Psychological Abuse: A Model Of Efficacy Erosion., Kristen E. Hosey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current research proposed that psychological abuse within an intimate relationship erodes one's self-efficacy and aimed to demonstrate a negative relationship between past psychological abuse and how one reacts to a challenge. It was hypothesized that when faced with a challenging task past psychological abuse would be related to decreased task persistence, increased negative affect, and choosing low-difficulty future tasks. Each of these relationships would then be simultaneously mediated by general and specific self-efficacy. The study was conducted in two phases with undergraduate women. During the first phase participants self-reported demographic and relationship history information, level of general self-efficacy, and …

Differential Responses To Endothelial–Dependent Relaxation Of The Thoracic And Abdominal Aorta From Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Ahmed Kolade Oloyo, Simiat Elias, Olusoga Adekunle Sofola

Biomedical Sciences, East Africa

Regional heterogeneity exists in reactivity of different vascular beds to vasoactive substances. Experiments were designed to determine if there are differences between thoracic and abdominal aorta response to acetylcholineinduced relaxation. Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats with a weighing between 200g–250g were used. The aorta was isolated and 3mm aortic rings were cut and suspended in organ baths containing physiological salt saline (PSS). Contractile and relaxation responses to noradrenaline (NA) and ACh, in the presence or absence of L-NNA and high K+ concentration were studied. Contractile response to NA was similar along the aorta. At the higher doses, ACh elicited a greater …

The Role Of Gene Duplication And Unconstrained Selective Pressures In The Melanopsin Gene Family Evolution And Vertebrate Circadian Rhythm Regulation, Rui Borges, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien, Vitor Vasconcelos, Agostinho Antunes

Biology Faculty Articles

Melanopsin is a photosensitive cell protein involved in regulating circadian rhythms and other non-visual responses to light. The melanopsin gene family is represented by two paralogs,OPN4x and OPN4m, which originated through gene duplication early in the emergence of vertebrates. Here we studied the melanopsin gene family using an integrated gene/protein evolutionary approach, which revealed that the rhabdomeric urbilaterian ancestor had the same amino acid patterns (DRY motif and the Y and E conterions) as extant vertebrate species, suggesting that the mechanism for light detection and regulation is similar to rhabdomeric rhodopsins. Both OPN4m and OPN4x paralogs are found …

Biology Faculty Articles

Reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) generated in response to receptor stimulation play an important role in cellular responses. However, the effect of increased H2O2on an antigen-specific CD8+ T cell response was unknown. Following T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation, the expression and oxidation of peroxiredoxin II (PrdxII), a critical antioxidant enzyme, increased in CD8+ T cells. Deletion of PrdxII increased ROI, S phase entry, division, and death during in vitro division. During primary acute viral and bacterial infection, the number of effector CD8+ T cells in PrdxII-deficient mice was increased, while the number of memory …

How The Leopard Hides Its Spots: Asip Mutations And Melanism In Wild Cats, Alexsandra Schneider, Victor A. David, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien, Gregory S. Barsh, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, Eduardo Eizirik

Biology Faculty Articles

The occurrence of melanism (darkening of the background coloration) is documented in 13 felid species, in some cases reaching high frequencies at the population level. Recent analyses have indicated that it arose multiple times in the Felidae, with three different species exhibiting unique mutations associated with this trait. The causative mutations in the remaining species have so far not been identified, precluding a broader assessment of the evolutionary dynamics of melanism in the Felidae. Among these, the leopard (Panthera pardus) is a particularly important target for research, given the iconic status of the ‘black panther’ and the extremely …

Effect Of Rising Temperature Due To Ozone Depletion On The Dynamics Of A Prey-Predator System: A Mathematical Model, O. P. Misra, Preety Kalra Dec 2012

Effect Of Rising Temperature Due To Ozone Depletion On The Dynamics Of A Prey-Predator System: A Mathematical Model, O. P. Misra, Preety Kalra

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

It is well recognized that the greenhouse gas such as Chlorofluoro Carbon (CFC) is responsible directly or indirectly for the increase in the average global temperature of the Earth. The presence of CFC is responsible for the depletion of ozone concentration in the atmosphere due to which the heat accompanied with the sun rays are less absorbed causing increase in the atmospheric temperature of the Earth. The increase in the temperature level directly or indirectly affects the dynamics of interacting species systems. Therefore, in this paper a mathematical model is proposed and analyzed using stability theory to asses the effects …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper is organized in the following ways: In the first part, we obtained the Klein Gordon Equation (KGE) in the Galilean space. In the second part, we applied Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) to this differential equation. In the third part, we gave two examples for the Klein Gordon equation. Finally, We compared the numerical results of this differential equation with their exact results. We also showed that approach used is easy and highly accurate.

Numerical Studies For Solving Fractional Riccati Differential Equation, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader, A. M. S. Mahdy Dec 2012

Numerical Studies For Solving Fractional Riccati Differential Equation, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader, A. M. S. Mahdy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, finite difference method (FDM) and Pade'-variational iteration method (Pade'- VIM) are successfully implemented for solving the nonlinear fractional Riccati differential equation. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. The existence and the uniqueness of the proposed problem are given. The resulting nonlinear system of algebraic equations from FDM is solved by using Newton iteration method; moreover the condition of convergence is verified. The convergence's domain of the solution is improved and enlarged by Pade'-VIM technique. The results obtained by using FDM is compared with Pade'-VIM. It should be noted that the Pade'-VIM is preferable because …

On The Numerical Solution Of Linear Fredholm-Volterra İntegro Differential Difference Equations With Piecewise İntervals, Mustafa Gülsu, Yalçın Öztürk

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The numerical solution of a mixed linear integro delay differential-difference equation with piecewise interval is presented using the Chebyshev collocation method. The aim of this article is to present an efficient numerical procedure for solving a mixed linear integro delay differential difference equations. Our method depends mainly on a Chebyshev expansion approach. This method transforms a mixed linear integro delay differential-difference equations and the given conditions into a matrix equation which corresponds to a system of linear algebraic equation. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed scheme are demonstrated by some numerical experiments and performed on the computer algebraic system …

Further Results On Fractional Calculus Of Saigo Operators, Praveen Agarwal Dec 2012

Further Results On Fractional Calculus Of Saigo Operators, Praveen Agarwal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A significantly large number of earlier works on the subject of fractional calculus give interesting account of the theory and applications of fractional calculus operators in many different areas of mathematical analysis (such as ordinary and partial differential equations, integral equations, special functions, summation of series, et cetera). The main object of the present paper is to study and develop the Saigo operators. First, we establish two results that give the image of the product of multivariable H-function and a general class of polynomials in Saigo operators. On account of the general nature of the Saigo operators, multivariable H-function and …

An Approximate Analytical Algorithm For Solving The Multispecies Lotka-Volterra Equations, Abdolsaeed Alavi, Asghar Ghorbani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a new efficient method called the parametric iteration method (PIM) is applied to accurately solve the multispecies Lotka–Volterra equations (MLVEs). Some cases of MLVEs are highlighted in order to show the simplicity and efficiency of the method. The results obtained in this work demonstrate that the present algorithm is a powerful analytic tool for the solution of MLVEs.

Study Of Reliability With Mixed Standby Components, M. A. El-Damcese, A. N. Helmy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper deals with the reliability characteristics of two different series system configurations with mixed standby (include cold and warm standby) components. The failure rates of the primary and warm standby components are assumed to follow the Weibull distribution. The repair time distribution of each server is exponentially distributed. Moreover, we will derive the mean time-to-failure, and the steady-state availability for a special case of a serial system of two primary components, two warm standby components, and one cold standby component, when the failure and repair rate are constant.

A Constructive Proof Of Fundamental Theory For Fuzzy Variable Linear Programming Problems, A. Ebrahimnejad Dec 2012

A Constructive Proof Of Fundamental Theory For Fuzzy Variable Linear Programming Problems, A. Ebrahimnejad

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Two existing methods for solving fuzzy variable linear programming problems based on ranking functions are the fuzzy primal simplex method proposed by Mahdavi-Amiri et al. (2009) and the fuzzy dual simplex method proposed by Mahdavi-Amiri and Nasseri (2007). In this paper, we prove that in the absence of degeneracy these fuzzy methods stop in a finite number of iterations. Moreover, we generalize the fundamental theorem of linear programming in a crisp environment to a fuzzy one. Finally, we illustrate our proof using a numerical example.

Modification Of Truncated Expansion Method For Solving Some Important Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, N. Taghizadeh, M. Mirzazadeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we implemented modification of truncated expansion method for the exact solutions of the Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky equation the (n+1)-dimensional combined sinhcosh- Gordon equation and the Maccari system. Modification of truncated expansion method is a powerful solution method for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. This method presents a wider applicability for handling nonlinear wave equations.

On Stability Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales Via Dichotomic Maps, Veysel F. Hatipoğlu, Zeynep F. Koçak, Deniz Uçar Dec 2012

On Stability Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales Via Dichotomic Maps, Veysel F. Hatipoğlu, Zeynep F. Koçak, Deniz Uçar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Dichotomic maps are used to check the stability of ordinary differential equations and difference equations. In this paper, this method is extended to dynamic equations on time scales; the stability and asymptotic stability to the trivial solution of the first order system of dynamic equations are examined using dichotomic and strictly dichotomic maps. This method, in dynamic equations, also involves Lyapunov’s direct method.

We describe a semester-long collaboration between a mathematics class and a biology class. Students worked together to understand and model the trajectory of the pandemic H1N1, pH1N1, outbreak across campus in fall 2009. Each course had about 30 students and was an upper-level elective for majors. Some mathematics students had taken no college-level biology, and some biology students had taken no college-level mathematics. All students had taken at least three quantitative courses, so they had some experience working with data. Our goals were to allow students to work with and model a real data set that affected them personally, to …

Attributions For Interpersonal Healthcare Mistreatment And Continuity Of Care, Daniel Joel Northington Dec 2012

Attributions For Interpersonal Healthcare Mistreatment And Continuity Of Care, Daniel Joel Northington

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although continuity of cancer-related care increases the use of early detection cancer screening exams (Doescher, Saver, Fiscella, & Franks, 2004), and thereby improves treatment outcomes (Mandelblatt et al., 2009), Latino (Latina) women in the U.S. currently report lower continuity of care than non-Latino White (Anglo) women (American Cancer Society, 2010; Doescher, Saver, Fiscella, & Franks, 2001). Such disparities may be due, in part, to interpersonal healthcare mistreatment (Smedley, Stith, & Nelson, 2003), as well as mistreatment-related attributions and emotions (Betancourt, Flynn, & Ormseth, 2011; Tucker, 2008). Therefore, according to Weiner's model of attribution and emotion (1986) as well as Betancourt's …

Cultural Study Of Attributions Of Sports Fans, John C. Park

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cultural differences in the attributions of sports fans in the US have not been sufficiently explored. Studies have shown that individualists have the tendency to make more internal attributions compared to collectivists (Kashima & Triandis, 1986; Al-Zahrani & Kaplowitz, 1993; Cha & Nam, 1985; Hallahan et al., 1997). Furthermore, in sports setting, individualists have the tendency to engage in the self-serving bias, whereas collectivists may not engage in this process (Schuster et, al, 1989; Lee et. al, 1996; Hallahan et. al, 1997; Crittendon, 1991). Undergraduate students at La Sierra University, California, participated in an experiment where cultural differences in fans' …
