Separating Component Signals Of Episodic Simulation Using A Catch Trial Design, Adrian W. Gilmore Dec 2012

Separating Component Signals Of Episodic Simulation Using A Catch Trial Design, Adrian W. Gilmore

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Tasks that require mentally simulating events, such as remembering events from one’s past and imagining events from one’s future, have been shown to involve a highly overlapping set of brain regions. Across a growing number of studies, relatively few regions have been found that show differences in activity between remembered and imagined events. However, studies have not disambiguated neural activity related to task orientation: i.e., preparing to remember events from the past or imagine events in the future) from activity related simulating events, per se. The current experiment uses functional MRI and employs a catch trial design to test the …

Can A Computer Intercept Your Email?, Bruce E. Boyden Dec 2012

Can A Computer Intercept Your Email?, Bruce E. Boyden

Cardozo Law Review

In recent years, it has become feasible for computers to rapidly scan the contents of large amounts of communications traffic to identify certain characteristics of those messages: that they are spam, contain malware, discuss various products or services, are written in a particular dialect, contain copyright-infringing files, or discuss symptoms of particular diseases. There are a wide variety of potential uses for this technology, such as research, filtering, or advertising. But the legal status of automated processing, if it is done without advance consent, is unclear. Where it results in the disclosure of the contents of a message to others, …

Impulsivity And Suicidal Ideation Or Attempt In Younger And Older Adults, Elizabeth C. Price Dec 2012

Impulsivity And Suicidal Ideation Or Attempt In Younger And Older Adults, Elizabeth C. Price

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rates of suicidal behaviors vary over the lifespan, but little research has focused on developmental aspects of suicidal behaviors and associated risk factors. Previous studies suggest that young people who attempt or die by suicide are likely to be generally impulsive. 108 community-dwelling older adults age 60 and older and 498 undergraduate students ages 18-30 completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies -- Depression Scale, the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, and the Suicidal Behaviors Scale -- Revised. The hypothesis was that the relation between impulsivity and suicidal ideation or attempt, in the context of depressive symptoms, would be stronger in younger adults …

The Influence Of Self-Reported Family Functioning On Depression Symptom Severity And Psychological Well-Being In Treatment-Seeking Older Adults, Patricia M. Bamonti Dec 2012

The Influence Of Self-Reported Family Functioning On Depression Symptom Severity And Psychological Well-Being In Treatment-Seeking Older Adults, Patricia M. Bamonti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Among treatment-seeking older adults, positive social ties are related to depression outcomes prospectively. Less is known regarding the role of negative social ties in relation to depression and well-being outcomes among patients in treatment. The current study adds to this literature through the cross-sectional and prospective examination of patients' appraisal of family members perceived criticism in relation to self-reported depressive symptom severity and psychological well-being In addition, potential moderators of these relations were examined, including personality variables (Neuroticism and Conscientiousness), cognitive functioning, and living status. adults 60 years of age and older newly (< 1 month after intake session) receiving treatment for depressive or anxious symptomatology at a university-affiliated outpatient clinic as part of an on-going study that assessed depression and decision-making in late life. Results demonstrated that individuals with increased perceived criticism also had greater depressive symptom severity, at least measured at one point in time. Perceived criticism failed to predict change in depression symptom severity in the prospective analyses. Similarly, perceived criticism was associated with lower psychological well-being in the cross-sectional analyses; however, perceived criticism failed to predict change in psychological well-being in prospective analyses. No significant interactions were found with perceived criticism, suggesting at least in the current study, personality variables, cognitive functioning, and living status did not qualify the relation between perceived criticism and depression symptom severity or change in depression symptom severity over time. EI was not significantly associated with depression symptom severity and psychological well-being cross-sectionally and prospectively, after controlling for perceived criticism and perceived social support from family. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Estimation Availability Function Through Determination The Optimal Imperfect Preventive Maintenance Period By Using Simulation, Emad Hazim Aboudi, Firas Saddam Abdul Dec 2012

Estimation Availability Function Through Determination The Optimal Imperfect Preventive Maintenance Period By Using Simulation, Emad Hazim Aboudi, Firas Saddam Abdul

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This paper deals with the modeling of a preventive maintenance strategy applied to a single-unit system subject to random failures. According to this policy, the system is subjected to imperfect periodic preventive maintenance restoring it to ‘as good as new’ with probability p and leaving it at state ‘as bad as old’ with probability q. Imperfect repairs are performed following failures occurring between consecutive preventive maintenance actions, i.e the times between failures follow a decreasing quasi-renewal process with parameter a. Considering the average durations of the preventive and corrective maintenance actions as well as their respective efficiency extents, a mathematical …

Nuclear Shape Of Er+ Breast Tumor Whole Slide Images Predict Recurrence And Survival, Daniel Shao Dec 2012

Nuclear Shape Of Er+ Breast Tumor Whole Slide Images Predict Recurrence And Survival, Daniel Shao

Intersections Fall 2020

Axillary Lymph Node involvement is the most important prognostic factor in the assessment of Estrogen Receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer (BCa) patients. Patients with evidence of metastatic disease in axillary lymph nodes positive (LN+) patients have poorer survival prospects and higher likelihood of metastasis. Standard clinical treatment for LN+ patients includes adjuvant chemotherapy, though not all LN+ patients will benefit from it. Although the absence of axillary lymph node involvement at initial diagnosis typically indicates lower risk, 30% of these LN-, ER+ BCa patients will ultimately die from breast cancer metastasis, even with optimal treatment. There is no standard criteria …

Membrane Separation Of Cu-67 For Use In Theranostics, Benjamin Fugate, Maura Sepesy, Kevin Pataroque, Christine Duval

Intersections Fall 2020

Because of its β− and γ decay routes, 67Cu is a very promising radioisotope for use in theranostic cancer treatments. Currently, 67Cu is produced through the irradiation of either 68Zn or 67Zn in a cyclotron, a traditional nuclear reactor or a linear electron accelerator. Once formed, a small amount of copper (nanograms) has to be separated from the large amount of remaining zinc (grams) and undesired byproduct isotopes such as 66Ga, 67Ga, 64Cu, 61Cu, 58Co. Currently, such separations are performed in resin-packed columns and can require 4 h to purify a 5 g target. These procedures may involve multiple columns …

3D Printing, or additive manufacturing, is a novel approach to manufacturing simple and complex structures. 3D printing uses digital models and g-code to build these parts layer by layer. This method can allow for more freedom of part design with regard to complexity of shape, and can reduce material waste compared to other manufacturing methods. This project explores the 3D printability of common caulking materials, cements, adhesives, and other pastes. These materials are low-cost and present high printability. Experiments are underway to determine the thermomechanical properties of these 3D printed materials and the effects of nanomaterial additives in low loading …

Effect Of High Energy Ball Milling On Transformation Temperature Of Cr2nb, Jackson Smith Dec 2012

Effect Of High Energy Ball Milling On Transformation Temperature Of Cr2nb, Jackson Smith

Intersections Fall 2020

The focus of this research was to determine a milling procedure to help facilitate the Cr2Nb transformation. The metric to evaluate a facilitated phase transformation was a reduction in endothermic onset temperature during Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The transformation of the Cr+Nb powder to Cr2Nb alloy is diffusion dependent, therefore by creating more intimate contact the elements will be closer together. A reduction in spatial distance for a diffusion-based reaction will lead to a reduction in total time for the reaction to complete. The design of a multi-stage milling process allows the refinement of the powder particle size so that …

Plasmas For Clean Water: Elucidation Of Radical Species In An Electrolytic Non-Equilibrium Plasma-Water System, Kevin Pataroque Dec 2012

Plasmas For Clean Water: Elucidation Of Radical Species In An Electrolytic Non-Equilibrium Plasma-Water System, Kevin Pataroque

Intersections Fall 2020

Plasma water treatment (PWT) is an emerging water treatment technology that utilizes electrical discharges in gases to degrade aqueous contaminants. Prior work has demonstrated that PWT is capable of degrading perfluorooctanoic acid, a widespread contaminant that is unable to be degraded by denitrification or UV processes that wastewater facilities currently employ. In addition, unlike other approaches, PWT forms energetic species directly from water, eliminating the need for additional chemicals or catalysts. However, internal mechanisms within PWT treatment process, such as the production of different radical species are not well understood. Characterization of the species and their role in degradation is …

An All-In-One Nlp Stock Market Backtester, Shaochen Zhong, Jiaqi Yu, Mocun Ye Dec 2012

An All-In-One Nlp Stock Market Backtester, Shaochen Zhong, Jiaqi Yu, Mocun Ye

Intersections Fall 2020

Despite the popularity, we noticed that it is rather hard to verify a NLP/text-mining like stock prediction model's performance due to the amount of "groundwork" needed. It is very typical a researcher will have to gather the plain text data, the company info, the stock market data, and categorize them in a way that is communicable with each other and the model; then the researcher will need to build a virtual trading platform that keeps track of all the trading signals generated by the model, log the activities in a certain way, then do some kinds of visualization for evaluations. …

Introduction: Becoming An Atheist, Lois Eveleth

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

One of America's great intellectuals, Ralph Waldo Emerson created Transcendentalism, the underpinning of the Romantic movement and America's 19th century Renaissance. Not so well known is his anguished departure from the Christianity of his youth. This book corrects this oversight by showing connections between the faith of his youth and the central themes of Transcendentalism. This is a book not only about Emerson's intellectual and spiritual journey but about the essence of New England Transcendentalism.
