The Impact Of Standards-Based Reform On Special Education: An Exploration Of Westvale Elementary School, Jessica Kim Bacon Dec 2012

The Impact Of Standards-Based Reform On Special Education: An Exploration Of Westvale Elementary School, Jessica Kim Bacon

Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations

A critical, interpretivist, qualitative study, this project examines how standards-based reform impacts special education at an urban school, called Westvale Elementary School. The school was labeled a Persistently Low Achieving school under the No Child Left Behind Act and was thus required to undergo a "transformation" process. The demographics of the school at the time of the study were: over 95% free and reduced lunch, 40% Limited English Proficiency, and over 20% students with disabilities. The racial makeup of the school is: 50% Hispanic or Latino, 35% Black or African American, and 10% white. My methodological approach drew primarily upon …

Killing Them With Kindness: Examining Consumer-Friendly Arbitration Clauses After At&T Mobility V. Concepcion, Myriam Gilles Dec 2012

Killing Them With Kindness: Examining Consumer-Friendly Arbitration Clauses After At&T Mobility V. Concepcion, Myriam Gilles

Notre Dame Law Review

The article focuses on the U.S. Supreme Court case AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion, in which California's "Discover Bank rule" was struck by the Court under the Federal Arbitration Act, which was upheld by the California Supreme Court in the court case Discover Bank v. Superior Court. It provides information that the rule is a judge-made rule which depicts that class action waivers are unforceable in arbitration agreements if such agreements are mentioned in standard form consumer contracts.

PdmsStar-Peg Hydrogels Prepared Via Solvent-Induced Phase Separation (Sips) And Their Potential Utility As Tissue Engineering Scaffolds, B. M. Bailey, R. Fei, Dany J. Munoz Pinto, M. S. Hahn, M. A. Grunlan

Engineering Faculty Research

Inorganic-organic hydrogels based on methacrylated star polydimethylsiloxane (PDMSstar-MA) and diacrylated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-DA) macromers were prepared via solvent-induced phase separation (SIPS). The macromers were combined in a dichloromethane precursor solution and sequentially photopolymerized, dried and hydrated. The chemical and physical properties of the hydrogels were further tailored by varying the number average molecular weight (Mn) of PEG-DA (Mn = 3.4k and 6k g mol-1) as well as the weight percent ratio of PDMSstar-MA (Mn = 7k g mol-1) to PEG-DA from 0:100 to 20:80. Compared to analogous hydrogels …

Operationalizing Intelligence Dominance, Roy Godson

CIWAG Case Studies

Newer, fragile states often lack the police, administrative, and economic resources needed to govern effectively, and many cannot provide basic goods and services to significant sectors of their population. The vacuum inside these states is being filled by armed groups and political movements that are growing in both numbers and capability. The global competition for power, influence, and legitimacy leads to struggles for control of populations, territory, and resources.

Policy Options For Microlender Funding In Arkansas, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

Very small businesses, otherwise known as “microenterprises,” play vital roles in the local, state, and national economies. As engines of employment, entrepreneurship, and innovation, microenterprises can be highly successful vehicles for inclusive and robust economic growth. However, many such businesses are constrained by lack of access to credit. Microenterprise owners and entrepreneurs may lack the credit or operating history needed to obtain a traditional small business loan at a commercially viable rate of interest, or the loan amount requested may be too small for a traditional lender to consider. Undoubtedly, a great many entrepreneurial opportunities are lost for lack of …

Retroactive Harms And Wrongs, Steven Luper Dec 2012

Retroactive Harms And Wrongs, Steven Luper

Philosophy Faculty Research

According to the immunity thesis, nothing that happens after we are dead harms or benefits us . It seems defensible on the following basis: 1. If harmed (benefitted) by something, we incur the harm (benefit) at some time. 2. So if harmed (benefitted) by a postmortem event, we incur the harm (benefit) while alive or at some other time. 3. But if we incur the harm (benefit) while alive, backwards causation occurs. 4. And if we incur the harm (benefit) at any other time, we incur it at a time when we do not exist. 5. Yet nothing incurs harm …

Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty (And Beyond), Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2012

Decision Making Under Interval Uncertainty (And Beyond), Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To make a decision, we must find out the user's preference, and help the user select an alternative which is the best -- according to these preferences. Traditional utility-based decision theory is based on a simplifying assumption that for each two alternatives, a user can always meaningfully decide which of them is preferable. In reality, often, when the alternatives are close, the user is often unable to select one of these alternatives. In this chapter, we show how we can extend the utility-based decision theory to such realistic (interval) cases.

F-Transform In View Of Trend Extraction, Irina Perfilieva, Vladik Kreinovich, Vilém Novák

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the analysis of time series, it is important to decompose the original values into trend, cycle, seasonal component, and noise. In this paper, we provide a theoretical justification of the fact that the F-transform can be used for this purpose. We formulate "natural" requirements on the trend extraction procedure and then show that the inverse F-transform fulfils all of them.

Statistical Modelling Of The Coupled Effect Of Mix Design And Rebar Spacing On Restricted Flow Characteristics Of Scc, Yahia Ammar, Khayat H. Kamal, Sayed Mohammed Dec 2012

Statistical Modelling Of The Coupled Effect Of Mix Design And Rebar Spacing On Restricted Flow Characteristics Of Scc, Yahia Ammar, Khayat H. Kamal, Sayed Mohammed

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is designed to exhibit high deformability and stability to maintain homogenous suspension of coarse aggregate particles in the mortar during flow to ensure adequate passing ability of the concrete through restricted areas and the filling of the formwork without any consolidation. Proper deformability and uniform suspension of coarse aggregate particles in the matrix are key parameters to ensure successful casting and adequate in situ performance. the required flow properties of concrete are affected by the rheological properties of the mixture and the characteristics of the cast element, including the level of reinforcement. the mixture proportioning of SCC …

Evaluation Theory And Practice, Stewart I. Donaldson Dec 2012

Evaluation Theory And Practice, Stewart I. Donaldson

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

One of the topics I was determined to discuss with my European colleagues at the Helsinki Conference was the use of theory in evaluation practice. I was thrilled to stumble upon several thought provoking discussions regarding the use of theory in evaluation. A common theme was the belief that teaching evaluation practitioners about theory was critical to a better future for the evaluation discipline. But why is theory so important? The session I addressed on this topic also involved Frans Leeuw, Evert Vedung and Gary Henry. I emerged from the session with some new (and old) insights about evaluation theory …

Search-Based Detection Of High-Level Model Changes, Ameni Ben Fadhel, Marouane Kessentini, Philip Langer, Manuel Wimmer

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Software models are iteratively refined, restructured and evolved. the detection and analysis of changes applied between two versions of a model are one of the most important tasks during evolution and maintenance activities. in this paper, we propose an approach to detect high-level model changes in terms of refactoring. Our approach takes as input an exhaustive list of possible refactoring, the initial model and revised model, and generates as output a list of detected changes representing a sequence of refactoring. a solution is defined as a combination of refactoring that should maximize as much as possible the similarity between the …

Inference And Learning In Probabilistic Logic Programs With Continuous Random Variables, Muhammad Asiful Islam Dec 2012

Inference And Learning In Probabilistic Logic Programs With Continuous Random Variables, Muhammad Asiful Islam

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Statistical Relational Learning (SRL), an emerging area of Machine Learning, aims at modeling problems which exhibit complex relational structure as well as uncertainty. It uses a subset of first-order logic to represent relational properties, and graphical models to represent uncertainty. Probabilistic Logic Programming (PLP) is an interesting subfield of SRL. A key characteristic of PLP frameworks is that they are conservative extensions to non-probabilistic logic programs which have been widely used for knowledge representation. PLP frameworks extend traditional logic programming semantics to a distribution semantics, where the semantics of a probabilistic logic program is given in terms of a distribution …

In an effort to better understand the ancestral state of the human distal gut microbiome, we examine feces retrieved from archaeological contexts (coprolites). To accomplish this, we pyrosequenced the 16S rDNA V3 region from duplicate coprolite samples recovered from three archaeological sites, each representing a different depositional environment: Hinds Cave (~8000 years B.P.) in the southern United States, Caserones (1600 years B.P.) in northern Chile, and Rio Zape in northern Mexico (1400 years B.P.). Clustering algorithms grouped samples from the same site. Phyletic representation was more similar within sites than between them. A Bayesian approach to source-tracking was used to …

Seasonal Variations In The Inputs And Fate Of Mercury In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Xuying Wang Dec 2012

Seasonal Variations In The Inputs And Fate Of Mercury In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Xuying Wang

Civil and Environmental Engineering - Theses

The Adirondack region of New York is sensitive to atmospheric mercury deposition. In this study, the fate of mercury inputs to the Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF) of the Adirondack region was examined by conducting a mercury mass budget over the annual cycle. Mercury cycling processes analyzed included wet mercury deposition, dry mercury deposition, foliar mercury accumulation, throughfall mercury, litterfall mercury, soil mercury evasion, and soil solution mercury fluxes. The mercury transport processes were quantified by integrating data collected from different sources in recent years (2004-2011) over a monthly time step. Dry mercury deposition (16.3 µg m-2 yr-1) was more important …

Estimation Of Solute Fluxes From Ungaged Headwater Catchments In The Catskill Park Of New York State, Chris Gianfagna Dec 2012

Estimation Of Solute Fluxes From Ungaged Headwater Catchments In The Catskill Park Of New York State, Chris Gianfagna

Civil and Environmental Engineering - Theses

Predictions of flow and subsequent solute fluxes from ungaged basins have important implications both for water resources management and ecosystem monitoring studies. The Catskill region of New York State is one such place that requires both water resources management and ecosystem monitoring due to its strategic location as the main water-supplying region for New York City. This study examines the differences in chemical mass flux estimates made in ungaged basins using three different chemistry aggregation methods for solute concentrations determined from monthly grab samples. The efficacy of area ratios for predicting flow at the upstream location of a nested pair …

Enriching Step-Based Product Information Models To Support Product Life-Cycle Activities, Mehmet Ilteris Sarigecili Dec 2012

Enriching Step-Based Product Information Models To Support Product Life-Cycle Activities, Mehmet Ilteris Sarigecili

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations

The representation and management of product information in its life-cycle requires standardized data exchange protocols. Standard for Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP) is such a standard that has been used widely by the industries. Even though STEP-based product models are well defined and syntactically correct, populating product data according to these models is not easy because they are too big and disorganized. Data exchange specifications (DEXs) and templates provide re-organized information models required in data exchange of specific activities for various businesses. DEXs show us it would be possible to organize STEP-based product models in order to support different …

This study identifies social representations in interviews about alcohol and substance use in the discourse of 129 young adults, who were interviewed for 2.5 to 3.5 hr each for their life histories and use or nonuse of alcoholic beverages and drugs. Respondents spontaneously delineated their substance use boundaries, creating a continuum of behaviors with boundary points separating acceptable from unacceptable behaviors. They used signaling expressions to indicate go and stop signs and movement along the substance use continuum and reported negotiating substance use boundaries both internally and with peers. A ubiquitous narrative element was the cautionary tale, in which a …

Using Marine Snails To Teach Biogeography And Macroevolution: The Role Of Larvae And Dispersal Ability In The Evolution And Persistence Of Species, Jonathan R. Hendricks Dec 2012

Using Marine Snails To Teach Biogeography And Macroevolution: The Role Of Larvae And Dispersal Ability In The Evolution And Persistence Of Species, Jonathan R. Hendricks

Faculty Publications

While some marine animals are capable of traveling great distances, many have limited mobility as adults and spend the majority of their lifetimes in a small geographical area or may even be cemented to a single place. While it might be expected that species with limited mobility would have small geographic distributions, some nevertheless occur over very large areas. This is the case for some marine snails (gastropods). A key factor that impacts the geographic distribution of marine snails is the type of larvae they have during the phase of their life history that follows hatching from an egg. Because …
