The Value Of Removing Daily Obstacles Via Everyday Problem-Solving Theory: Developing An Applied Novel Procedure To Increase Self-Efficacy For Exercise, Daniele Artistico, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Jill Douek, Justin Black, Lina Pezzuti

Publications and Research

The objective of the study was to develop a novel procedure to increase self-efficacy for exercise. Gains in one’s ability to resolve day-to-day obstacles for entering an exercise routine were expected to cause an increase in self-efficacy for exercise. Fifty-five sedentary participants (did not exercise regularly for at least 4 months prior to the study) who expressed an intention to exercise in the near future were selected for the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) an Experimental Group in which they received a problem-solving training session to learn new strategies for solving day-to-day obstacles that …

An Investigation Of Urban Mobile Source Aerosol Using Optical Properties Measured By Crdt/N: Diesel Particulate Matter And The Impact Of Biodiesel, Monica Elizabeth Wright Dec 2012

An Investigation Of Urban Mobile Source Aerosol Using Optical Properties Measured By Crdt/N: Diesel Particulate Matter And The Impact Of Biodiesel, Monica Elizabeth Wright

Dissertations and Theses

Mobile source emissions are a major contributor to global and local air pollution. Governments and regulatory agencies have been increasing the stringency of regulations in the transportation sector for the last ten years to help curb transportation sector air pollution. The need for regulations has been emphasized by scientific research on the impacts from ambient pollution, especially research on the effect of particulate matter on human health. The particulate emissions from diesel vehicles, diesel particulate matter (DPM) is considered a known or probable carcinogen in various countries and increased exposure to DPM is linked to increased cardiovascular health problems in …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

There is not one program given on any Civil War battle landscape that cannot, somewhere in it's natural flow and using resource-specific elements and tangibles, discuss the cause and context of the war in a meaningful and thematically-integrated way. Period. Full Stop.

Furthermore and because of this, there is no reason or excuse not to cover the cause and context of the war in a meaningful, thematically-integrated and site-specific way in every personal services program in some manner or fashion. Period. Full Stop. [excerpt]

The P2y(12) Antagonists, 2mesamp And Cangrelor, Inhibit Platelet Activation Through P2y(12)/G(I)-Dependent Mechanism, Binggang Xiang, Guoying Zhang, Hongmei Ren, Manjula Sunkara, Andrew J. Morris, T. Kent Gartner, Susan S. Smyth, Zhenyu Li

Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: ADP is an important physiological agonist that induces integrin activation and platelet aggregation through its receptors P2Y(1) (Gα(q)-coupled) and P2Y(12) (Gα(i)-coupled). P2Y(12) plays a critical role in platelet activation and thrombosis. Adenosine-based P2Y(12) antagonists, 2-methylthioadenosine 5'-monophosphate triethylammonium salt hydrate (2MeSAMP) and Cangrelor (AR-C69931MX) have been widely used to demonstrate the role of P2Y(12) in platelet function. Cangrelor is being evaluated in clinical trials of thrombotic diseases. However, a recent study reported that both 2MeSAMP and Cangrelor raise intra-platelet cAMP levels and inhibit platelet aggregation through a P2Y(12)-independent mechanism.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The present work, using P2Y(12) deficient mice, sought to …

The Adverse Effects Periodontal Disease Has On Women, Jennifer Long Dec 2012

The Adverse Effects Periodontal Disease Has On Women, Jennifer Long

Honors Theses

The Adverse Effects Periodontal Diseases Has on Women Periodontal diseases are challenging to define given the number and variety of different oral diseases. This review sought to answer the question: How does a periodontal disease impact a woman throughout the life span? Specifically, this document discussed how, because of the cycling hormones and the effects those hormones have on the different bacteria, women's periodontal diseases differ from men's. Diseases of the mouth were first discovered during the Egyptian period and the information and knowledge about the different diseases advanced as time progressed. From here, non-surgical and surgical treatments were discussed …

A Lexicographic Product Cancellation Property For Digraphs, Kendall Manion Dec 2012

A Lexicographic Product Cancellation Property For Digraphs, Kendall Manion

Theses and Dissertations

There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. The paper then discusses the lexicographic product of digraphs, denoted $G \circ H$, for some digraphs $G$ and $H$. The paper concludes by proving a cancellation property for the lexicographic product of digraphs $G$, $H$, $A$, …

Effects Of Practice With Imposed Communication Delay On The Coordination And Effectiveness Of Distributed Teams, Megan L. Dove-Steinkamp Dec 2012

Effects Of Practice With Imposed Communication Delay On The Coordination And Effectiveness Of Distributed Teams, Megan L. Dove-Steinkamp

Master's Theses

The current study tested whether introduction of audio transmission delays during skill acquisition would benefit the performance effectiveness of distributed teams in a novel transfer context. Two-person university student teams (N=40) performed a simulated firefighting task in 4 practice trials and a novel transfer condition. Intra-team communications were systematically perturbed with closed-loop transmission delays ranging from 2 to 6 seconds. On average, teams were able to improve performance over time despite transmission delay, with significant differences in performance observed between certain groups both over the course and at the end of the experiment: Short (2s blocked) practice delay was associated …

Reactive Oxygen Species Production And Brugia Pahangi Survivorship In Aedes Polynesiensis With Artificial Wolbachia Infection Types, Elizabeth S. Andrews, Philip R. Crain, Yuqing Fu, Daniel K. Howe, Stephen L. Dobson

Entomology Faculty Publications

Heterologous transinfection with the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia has been shown previously to induce pathogen interference phenotypes in mosquito hosts. Here we examine an artificially infected strain of Aedes polynesiensis, the primary vector of Wuchereria bancrofti, which is the causative agent of Lymphatic filariasis (LF) throughout much of the South Pacific. Embryonic microinjection was used to transfer the wAlbB infection from Aedes albopictus into an aposymbiotic strain of Ae. polynesiensis. The resulting strain (designated "MTB") experiences a stable artificial infection with high maternal inheritance. Reciprocal crosses of MTB with naturally infected wild-type Ae. polynesiensis demonstrate strong bidirectional incompatibility. Levels of reactive …

Habitat Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse Centrocercus Urophasianus And Northern River Otters Lontra Canadensis In Utah, Matthew D. Westover Dec 2012

Habitat Selection Of Greater Sage-Grouse Centrocercus Urophasianus And Northern River Otters Lontra Canadensis In Utah, Matthew D. Westover

Theses and Dissertations

Greater sage-grouse populations have decreased steadily since European settlement in western North America. Reduced availability of brood-rearing habitat has been identified as a limiting factor for many populations. We used radio-telemetry to acquire locations of sage-grouse broods from 1998 to 2012 in Strawberry Valley, Utah. Using these locations and remotely-sensed imagery, we proceeded to 1) determine which features of brood-rearing habitat could be identified using widely available, fine-scale imagery 2) assess the scale at which sage-grouse selected brood-rearing habitat in our study area, and 3) create a predictive habitat model that could be applied across our large study area to …

Centers Of Cultural Gravity: Cultural Translation In Nublares, William Foster Carr Dec 2012

Centers Of Cultural Gravity: Cultural Translation In Nublares, William Foster Carr

Theses and Dissertations

In the novel Nublares, Antonio Pérez Henares presents a caveman who typifies the modern, fragmented subject. The protagonist, Ojo Largo, a hybrid child of various cultures, crosses the boundaries between those cultures and negotiates the in-between space as a cultural translator. The concept of the fragmented, hybrid self reflects modern cognitive science. Daniel Dennett's Multiple Drafts model of consciousness presents a fragmented self characterized by "disaggregated agency," a subject consisting of the center of gravity between disparate mental processes and accumulated "narratives." Taking this model as point of departure, this thesis finds a consensus between three novels of prehistory, …

Two-Refinement By Pillowing For Structured Hexahedral Meshes, J. Bruce Malone Dec 2012

Two-Refinement By Pillowing For Structured Hexahedral Meshes, J. Bruce Malone

Theses and Dissertations

A number of methods for adaptation of existing all-hexahedral grids by localized refinement have been developed; however, none ideally fit all refinement needs. This thesis presents the structure to a method of two-refinement developed for conformal, structured, all-hexahedral grids that offers flexibility beyond what has been offered to date. The method is fundamentally based on pillowing pairs of sheets of hexes. This thesis also suggests an implementation of the method, shows the results of examples refined using it and compares these results to results from implementing three-refinement on the same examples.

Rethinking Information Literacy In A Globalized World, Laurie Kutner, Alison Armstrong Dec 2012

Rethinking Information Literacy In A Globalized World, Laurie Kutner, Alison Armstrong

Communications in Information Literacy

As a profession, librarians have an important and unique role to play in higher education in producing information literate students equipped to be successful in a complex, twenty-first century global society. It is our contention that our guiding professional information literacy definitions and standards need to be reconsidered in order to remain relevant within the global learning context. Our preliminary conclusion is that the predominantly skills-based approach facilitated by the current ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, is not sufficient to facilitate teaching of twenty-first century "deep information literacy," which we feel encompasses additional content-based engagement with the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Heat-Treatment On The Morphology Of Nafion Ionomer Dispersion For Use In The Passive Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (Dmfc), Ting Yuan, Haifeng Zhang, Zhiqing Zou, Sufia Khatun, Daniel Akins, Yara Adam, Sophia Suarez Dec 2012

A Study Of The Effect Of Heat-Treatment On The Morphology Of Nafion Ionomer Dispersion For Use In The Passive Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (Dmfc), Ting Yuan, Haifeng Zhang, Zhiqing Zou, Sufia Khatun, Daniel Akins, Yara Adam, Sophia Suarez

Publications and Research

Aggregation in heat-treated Nafion ionomer dispersion and 117 membrane are investigated by 1H and 19F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra, spin-lattice relaxation time, and self-diffusion coefficient measurements. Results demonstrate that heat-treatment affects the average Nafion particle size in aqueous dispersions. Measurements on heat-treated Nafion 117 membrane show changes in the 1H isotropic chemical shift and no significant changes in ionic conductivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of prepared cathode catalyst layer containing the heat-treated dispersions reveals that the surface of the electrode with the catalyst ink that has been pretreated at ca. 80 °C exhibits a compact and uniform morphology. …
