Makine's Postmodern Writing About Exile, Memory, And Connection, Mary Theis
Makine's Postmodern Writing About Exile, Memory, And Connection, Mary Theis
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Makine's Postmodern Writing about Exile, Memory, and Connection" Mary Theis explores the implications of some of the many literary epiphanous moments that Andreï Makine shares with his readers in his neo-Romantic metaphysical literary quest to transcend lyrically the limitations imposed by our human condition. The analysis of this theme in Makin's literary career features several of his most important novels, his one play, and his subsequent meta-utopian reflections in Alternaissance, written under the pen name Gabriel Osmonde.
Miłosz's Quest For Affirmation And His Reflections On Us-American Culture, Joel J. Janicki
Miłosz's Quest For Affirmation And His Reflections On Us-American Culture, Joel J. Janicki
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Miłosz's Quest for Affirmation and His Reflections on US-American Culture" Joel J. Janicki discusses Czeslaw Miłosz's writings in exile devoted to his home in California. Miłosz, a Polish Lithuanian poet, essayist, and historian of literature, after experiencing five years of the nazi regime in Warsaw and six years of Stalinized rule in post-World War II Poland, threw himself "into the abyss" of exile. Miłosz's writings and translations have served as a bridge between the Polish and Anglo-Saxon cultures seldom encountered on such a scale. At the same time, his ability to look at a distance, his sensitivity …

Nádas's A Book Of Memories And Central European Journeys, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Nádas's A Book of Memories and Central European Journeys" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek discusses theoretical, literary, political, social, etc., aspects of travel in Péter Nádas's novel. "Travel" in the novel represents both a conceptual and lived experience at a time when travel between the East and the West in Europe was restricted and when a person hailing from the "East" considered a journey to the West a complex and ideological matter. Further, the aspect of urbanity, that is, cultural and social spaces and the journey and what such entails in terms of ideology, points of origin, knowledge, …
Metropolitan (Im)Migrants In The "Lettered City", Stacey Balkan
Metropolitan (Im)Migrants In The "Lettered City", Stacey Balkan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Metropolitan (Im)migrants in the 'Lettered City'" Stacey Balkan employs Ángel Rama's discussion of audience as a means of analyzing a Latin American diaspora that exists beyond the "rational periphery" of the state. Herein, the term diaspora is redefined as a translocal phenomenon wherein the metropolitan (im)migrant moves from rural margin to urban center. Normative definitions of exile — persons displaced from autonomous nation-states — are likewise scrutinized in the context of what the Rama terms a post-contemporary "city of letters." This post-contemporary city is the subject of what Mabel Moraña refers to as a "subaltern boom" — …

Affixation is one of the process of morphological in Mandarin. Affixes are bound morphemes that are added to other morphemes to form larger units such as words, especially to form a compound word (成词 héchéng cí). Mandarin has two types of affixes: prefixes (precedes the morpheme) and suffixes (follows the morpheme). Prefixes are rare in Mandarin, such as {初chū-}, {第dì-}, {非fēi-}, {可kĕ-}, etc; while suffixes are more numerous, such as {儿-er}, {化 –huā}, {家 –jiā}, {们 –men}, {员 –yuán}, {者 –zhĕ}, { 子-zi}, etc. In Mandarin, affix morphemes can also be divided into two functional categories, namely inflectional morphemes and …

Konflik Dan Integrasi, Sebuah Kajian Awal: Kasus Kerusuhan Medan, April 1994, Wijaya K. Legowo
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Problems of integration cannot be separated from conflicts. They are two sides of the same coin. A long, escalating conflict may contribute to disintegration. Schermerhorn (1978) on his valuable book mentions there are three models of integration: first, the harmony of the cultural problems; second, the conflict between subordination of an ethnic group and the superordinates, and third, problems of legitimacy. We have found many ethnic conflicts in the Indonesia’s plural society, especially the Chinese ethnic. The Indonesian Chinese minorities of Jakarta are still traumatized by and frightened of their memories for the Medan Riots (1994), the May Riots (1998) …

Using Metaphors As A Tool For Creative Strategic Sense-Making, Tomaž Kolar
Using Metaphors As A Tool For Creative Strategic Sense-Making, Tomaž Kolar
Economic and Business Review
This paper investigates the use of metaphor as a valuable tool in encountering contemporary challenges in marketing strategy development. A review of the literature indicates how traditional approaches pay insufficient attention to the fact that marketing strategy development rests largely on the processes of intuitive and symbolic thinking. The first part of the paper establishes creative strategic thinking, which includes these processes as a key imperative in marketing strategy development. To show how metaphors can serve as a tool in encountering some of the challenges identified the second part examines the functions of metaphors. The final part of the paper …
Estimating Probability Of Default And Comparing It To Credit Rating Classification By Banks, Matjaž Volk
Estimating Probability Of Default And Comparing It To Credit Rating Classification By Banks, Matjaž Volk
Economic and Business Review
Credit risk is the main risk in the banking sector and is as such one of key issues for financial stability. We estimate various PD models and use them in the application to credit rating classification. Models include firm specific characteristics and macroeconomic or time effects. By linking estimated firms’ PDs with all their relations to banks we find that estimated PDs and credit ratings exhibit quite different measures of firms’ creditworthiness. Results also suggest that in the crisis banks kept riskier borrowers in higher credit grades. This could be due to additional borrower-related information that banks take into consideration …
Three Firms On A Unit Disk Market: Intermediate Product Differentiation, Aljoša Feldin
Three Firms On A Unit Disk Market: Intermediate Product Differentiation, Aljoša Feldin
Economic and Business Review
Irmen and Thisse (1998) demonstrate that two firms competing with multicharacteristic products differentiate them in one characteristic completely, while keeping them identical in all others. This paper shows that their min-…-min-max differentiation result is not robust with respect to the number of firms. A market setting that replicates their result in a duopoly, but fails to do so in a three firm oligopoly is identified. Symmetric pure strategy equilibrium with three firms differentiating their products in two dimensions, but not completely in either of them, is a novel medium-medium differentiation result.

Transdermal drug delivery may be an alternative to overcome the problems of oral administration, such as fluctuations drugconcentration in the blood. Only several drugs have a good transdermal permeation ability, thus some efforts are needed to improve it. Transdermal permeation follows pasive diffusion mechanism. Therefore, Fick Law I must be concidered in improving transdermal permeation of the drug. This review aims to determine the factors associated with the transdermal permeation based on Fick's law I. Chemical compounds to enhance transdermal permeation (Chemical penetration enhancers) can be used to increase the diffusion coefficient (D), the partition coefficient (k), the rate of …
