Improving Phosphorus Use Efficiency Through Organically Bonded Phosphorus, Micheal W. Hill
Improving Phosphorus Use Efficiency Through Organically Bonded Phosphorus, Micheal W. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Current maximum efficiency of phosphorus (P) fertilizers that is utilized by plants in the same year of application ranges from near zero to thirty percent. Despite low utilization of P in crop production, yields are often limited by P deficiencies. Innovative technology is requisite to achieve greater efficiency as fertilizer demands are increasing, while phosphorus mineral resources are rapidly being depleted. A growing environmental concern for nutrient pollution of surface waters also carries significant weight. A novel new product, Carbond® P, is promising technology to increase P use efficiency. Research is needed to understand its capabilities and the functioning mechanisms …
Socialist Utopian Communities In The U.S. And Reasons For Their Failures, Elizabeth Nako
Socialist Utopian Communities In The U.S. And Reasons For Their Failures, Elizabeth Nako
History & Classics Student Scholarship
Near mid-nineteenth century, dozens of groups of men and women in both North America and Europe at this time saw “forming communities as the best opportunity for social progress.” While a small number of men enjoyed the luxuries and riches with the benefits of the Industrial Revolution, the majority of people comprised of the working class found themselves in suffering and misery from this new system. The unhappiness amongst civilization at this time period led to social philosophers and reformers to find new systems to cope with these social problems of the working class. One of these reform ideas and …

Rateri, Jessica J. Moorleghen, Victoria Knight, Anju Balakrishnan, Deborah A. Howatt, Lisa A. Cassis, Alan Daugherty
Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Whole body genetic deletion of AT1a receptors in mice uniformly reduces hypercholesterolemia and angiotensin II-(AngII) induced atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, the role of AT1a receptor stimulation of principal cell types resident in the arterial wall remains undefined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether deletion of AT1a receptors in either endothelial cells or smooth muscle cells influences the development of atherosclerosis and AAAs.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: AT1a receptor floxed mice were developed in an LDL receptor -/- background. To generate endothelial or smooth muscle cell specific deficiency, AT1a receptor floxed mice were bred with …

New Dwc Syllabus Using Nonwestern Sources, Aubrey Moore
Education Student Scholarship
This project presents a new, annotated syllabus for the Development of Western Civilization (DWC) curriculum at Providence College. The syllabus follows most of the same topics discussed in 3rd semester DWC, but instead uses almost all nonwestern sources for reading material. The purpose of the project was to gain a better understanding of western civilization while providing an alternative to how people learn about the society they live in, to better understand other societies, and help to put historical events into a broader context.

Modeling Radial Bernstein Modes In A Finite-Length Axisymmetric Non-Neutral Plasma, Mark Andrew Hutchison
Modeling Radial Bernstein Modes In A Finite-Length Axisymmetric Non-Neutral Plasma, Mark Andrew Hutchison
Theses and Dissertations
Axisymmetric radial Bernstein modes are known to exist in non-neutral plasmas and have been studied theoretically and computationally in 1D, but detection of these modes has still proven to be difficult due to self-shielding. To help advance the work on this front we created a 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) code that simulates a non-neutral plasma in a Malmberg-Penning trap. A detailed description of the PIC code itself has been included that highlights the benefits of using an $r^2$--$z$ grid and how it can be tested. The focus of the PIC simulation was to discover how best to drive and detect these …
Feminism And The New Woman In The Gilbert & Sullivan Operas, Heather Dawn Zurcher
Feminism And The New Woman In The Gilbert & Sullivan Operas, Heather Dawn Zurcher
Theses and Dissertations
The operas by playwright W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan have been considered some of the most popular and successful pieces of musical theatre in the English language. While their joint creative output neared perfection, Gilbert and Sullivan's working relationship was fraught with conflict. The two men's opposing personalities led them to favor disparate styles and work towards different goals. However, the ability to balance contrasting tones, such as sarcasm and sympathy, resulted in their overwhelming success. I analyze this "winning formula" by looking at the influence of feminism, especially the "New Woman" literary movement, on the works of …

Monitoring Land-Cover Change In The Las Vegas Valley: A Study Of Five Change Detection Methods In An Urban Environment, Bonnie Diane Weidemann
Theses and Dissertations
Change detection is currently a topic of great interest to theoretic geographic researchers. The necessity to map, monitor, and model land cover change is also important to a variety of applied fields as varied as urban planning and military intelligence. This research compares five algorithms to map urban land cover change in the greater Las Vegas, Nevada metropolitan area. Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery acquired on May 1990 and May 2000 was used as the primary data. The change detection methods yielded simple maps of change vs. no change. These algorithms included image differencing, image ratioing, image regression, vegetation index differencing, …
Effects Of Chemical Stimulation And Tumor Co-Incubation On Macrophage Activation And Aggressiveness, Measured Through Phagocytosis And Respiratory Burst, Bo Marcus Gustafsson
Effects Of Chemical Stimulation And Tumor Co-Incubation On Macrophage Activation And Aggressiveness, Measured Through Phagocytosis And Respiratory Burst, Bo Marcus Gustafsson
Theses and Dissertations
Macrophages are a cornerstone in innate immunity, especially important in detecting and killing invading microorganisms. In tumor biology, the macrophages can contribute both to anti-tumor activity and tumor promotion depending on individual tumor microenvironment and therefore have a large impact on both tumor progression and prognosis. Two of the most important functions of macrophages are the ability to phagocytose microorganisms and then kill them through the respiratory burst. Phagocytosis activates the respiratory burst, but the more subtle interactions between these processes are less known. Since phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species production are two attributes that change between the classically and …
Materialism And Psychological Well-Being: A Meta-Analytic Study, Kaylene Joy Fellows
Materialism And Psychological Well-Being: A Meta-Analytic Study, Kaylene Joy Fellows
Theses and Dissertations
The scholarly study of materialism is becoming more common in a variety of disciplines. This thesis provides an empirical review of this burgeoning body of literature by conducting a meta-analysis of the relationship between materialism and psychological well-being. A weighted overall effect size from 47 published and unpublished samples indicated that materialism was significantly related to lower psychological well-being. This effect size was modest in strength (r = .159). Materialism scale, psychological scale valance, age of sample, and publication status of the study did not moderate this relationship. Culture did moderate the relationship, with a stronger relationship in individualistic cultures …
