Garcia, Scott Miles, Chet Pilley, Vandana Raghunathan, Jennifer L. Roach, Nan Walker, Ronald B. Walter, Charles D. Rice, Fernando Galvez

Faculty Publications

The biological consequences of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill are unknown, especially for resident organisms. Here, we report results from a field study tracking the effects of contaminating oil across space and time in resident killifish during the first 4 mo of the spill event. Remote sensing and analytical chemistry identified exposures, which were linked to effects in fish characterized by genome expression and associated gill immunohistochemistry, despite very low concentrations of hydrocarbons remaining in water and tissues. Divergence in genome expression coincides with contaminating oil and is consistent with genome responses that are predictive of exposure to hydrocarbon-like chemicals …

Aggregation And Dynamics Of Oligocholate Transporters In Phospholipid Bilayers Revealed By Solid-State Nmr Spectroscopy, Tuo Wang, Lakmini Widanapathirana, Yan Zhao, Mei Hong

Faculty Publications

Macrocycles made of cholate building blocks were previously found to transport glucose readily across lipid bilayers. In this study, an 15N, 13Cα-labeled glycine was inserted into a cyclic cholate trimer and attached at the end of a linear trimer, respectively. The isotopic labeling allowed us to use solid-state NMR spectroscopy to study the dynamics, aggregation, and depth of insertion of these compounds in lipid membranes. The cyclic compound was found to be mostly immobilized in DLPC, POPC/POPG, and POPC/POPG/cholesterol membranes, whereas the linear trimer displayed large-amplitude motion that depended on the membrane thickness and viscosity. 13C-detected 1H spin diffusion experiments …

Protein Dynamics And Ion Traffic In Bacterioferritin, Huan Rui, Mario Rivera, Wonpil Im Dec 2012

Protein Dynamics And Ion Traffic In Bacterioferritin, Huan Rui, Mario Rivera, Wonpil Im

Faculty Publications

Bacterioferritin (Bfr) is a spherical protein composed of 24 subunits and 12 heme molecules. Bfrs contribute to regulate iron homeostasis in bacteria by capturing soluble but potentially toxic Fe2+ and by compartmentalizing it in the form of a bioavailable ferric mineral inside the protein's hollow cavity. When iron is needed, Fe3+ is reduced and mobilized into the cytosol as Fe2+. Hence, key to the function of Bfr is its ability to permeate iron ions in and out of its interior cavity, which is likely imparted by a flexible protein shell. To examine the conformational flexibility of Bfrs in a native-like …

Share Of Tax Filers Claiming Eitc Increases Across States And Place Types Between 2007 And 2010, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Elizabeth Kneebone

Carsey Publications

In this brief, Authors Beth Mattingly and Elizabeth Kneebone use Internal Revenue Service tax filing data to show that the share of tax returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) increased between 2007 and 2010, as did the size of the average credit claimed and the number of EITC filers benefitting from the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit (the Additional Child Tax Credit, or ACTC). They report that one in five federal income tax filers claimed the EITC in tax year 2010, which represents a 4 percentage point increase since 2007, when just over one in six …

Solid State Fault Interruption Devices In Medium Voltage Microgrid Distribution Systems With Distributed Energy Resources, Mehul K. Madan, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The solid-state fault interruption device (SSFID) is used for the purpose of quickly isolating sections of power networks under permanent faults. the SSFID is tested for performance by simulation in a simulated medium voltage system. a comparison with the conventional breaker is presented in response to system faults in the presence of wind power plants and other distributed energy resources. the SSFID appears to be a superior alternative to the contemporary mechanical circuit breaker in isolating faulted sections. However, some high transients may appear on the network because of the operation of the device. © 2012 IEEE.

Symbolic Model-Checking Of Stateful Timed Csp Using Bdd And Digitization, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Dec 2012

Symbolic Model-Checking Of Stateful Timed Csp Using Bdd And Digitization, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stateful Timed CSP has been recently proposed to model (and verify) hierarchical real-time systems. It is an expressive modeling language which combines data structure/operations, complicated control flows (modeled using compositional process operators adopted from Timed CSP), and real-time requirements like deadline and within. It has been shown that Stateful Timed CSP is equivalent to closed timed automata with silent transitions, which implies that the timing constraints of Stateful Timed CSP can be captured using explicit tick events, through digitization. In order to tackle the state space explosion problem, we develop a BDD-based symbolic model checking approach to verify Stateful Timed …

Struggling Recovery And Economic Policy Uncertainty: Testimony Before The Joint Revenue Hearing, House And Senate Ways And Means Committees, Massachusetts State House, Boston, Ma, Christian Weller

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The U.S. economy is in the fourth year of a recovery that started in June 2009. The fact that the economy is in recovery, even modestly, is something of a miracle given how stacked the deck is against it.

This is absolutely unique in American economic history: There has never been a recovery without the housing market expanding substantially as well; There has never been a recovery with state and local governments shrinking for three years in a row; There has never been a recovery with households owing, on average, well more than 100 percent of their after-tax income in …

Indexing Face Templates Using Linear Models, Pranab Mohanty, Sudeep Sarkar, Rangachar Kasturi, P. Jonathon Phillips

USF Patents

A novel, linear modeling method to model a face recognition algorithm based on the match scores produced by the algorithm. Starting with a distance matrix representing the pair-wise match scores between face images, an iterative stress minimization algorithm is used to obtain an embedding of the distance matrix in a low-dimensional space. A linear transformation used to project new face images into the model space is divided into two sub-transformations: a rigid transformation of face images obtained through principal component analysis of face images and a non-rigid transformation responsible for preserving pair-wise distance relationships between face images. Also provided is …

Adenosine Deaminase Enhances The Immunogenicity Of Human Dendritic Cells From Healthy And Hiv-Infected Individuals, Víctor Casanova, Isaac Isaac Naval-Macabuhay, Marta Massanella, Marta Rodríguez-García

Dartmouth Scholarship

ADA is an enzyme implicated in purine metabolism, and is critical to ensure normal immune function. Its congenital deficit leads to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). ADA binding to adenosine receptors on dendritic cell surface enables T-cell costimulation through CD26 crosslinking, which enhances T-cell activation and proliferation. Despite a large body of work on the actions of the ecto-enzyme ADA on T-cell activation, questions arise on whether ADA can also modulate dendritic cell maturation. To this end we investigated the effects of ADA on human monocyte derived dendritic cell biology. Our results show that both the enzymatic and non-enzymatic activities of …
