Co-teaching is a method that is increasing within schools across the US as educators strive to leave no child behind. It is a costly method, having two paid instructors in one classroom, with an average of 24 students shared between them. If it significantly increases the achievement of all students, it is well worth the costs involved. However, few studies have analyzed the effectiveness of this method on student achievement. The purpose of this study was to explore faculty members’ perceptions of community college Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs); whose main purpose is to promote, facilitate, and honor excellence in teaching and learning through the support of full-time and adjunct faculty, at all career stages. A generic qualitative study with a grounded theory approach was conducted to understand faculty members’ perceptions and to develop recommendations for community college CTL directors, administrators, and faculty. The first known campus climate study in central China was conducted for purposes of formative assessment by mixed methods, utilizing an instrument called the Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) developed by the National Initiative for Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness (NILIE) at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Surveys were translated into Mandarin and distributed in bilingual format to 1,170 campus employees at Central China University (a pseudonym) in Henan Province, and 945 surveys were returned, a rate of 80.8%. Participants who self-identified included both Chinese and foreign faculty, administrators and staff. Because the North American-normed instrument was administered …

This research designed and analyzed an innovative structural support system for ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) atrium roofs between buildings. A cable-spring system was conceived, which is much lighter and more flexible than arches, frames, trusses, and beams which usually support ETFE roofs. Flexibility was a desirable property because the displacements may vary significantly among the buildings supporting the ETFE atrium roof during wind and seismic loading. The springs in the cable-spring system allow large differential displacements without exerting large support reactions on the buildings. This dissertation, submitted in article format, explores how the physical movement theories of Anne Bogart's Viewpoints may lead to a liberatory setting, one which echoes the theories of Paolo Freire, for college theatre students. It examines whether Viewpoints is effective in creating a studio classroom culture and whether the Viewpoints exercises can lead to a heightened clarity in individual performance, with a much more satisfying and involved learning experience for students of the theatrical arts. In addition, this dissertation applies the theory of Mead's symbolic interactionism to the discoveries that students make while using Viewpoints exercises. This paper explores the graphic novel as a means to engage secondary English students in the works of Shakespeare. Graphic novels can combat some of the common complaints of teaching Shakespeare in secondary schools. They can help students to better relate to and understand the stories and language of Shakespeare. They can also assist learning disabled students in accessing and engaging in Shakespeare.

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew demonstrates the possible equality of marriage within Elizabethan marriage standards. However, in order to understand the importance of this concept one must first understand the negotiations, and role expectations within marriage during this time period. In Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare first introduces the audience to Petruchio who emulates the traditional man in an Elizabethan marriage. Then he establishes Katherine's character which does not fit into the expected role of subservient wife. Shakespeare compares their relationship to the traditional marriage because Shakespearean audiences would have been familiar with this social commentary. Katherine realizes that she …

The purpose of this research is to characterize the performance of the optimal sequential filter used in ODTK with a maneuvering satellite. Specifically, this thesis sought to characterize the performance using two scenarios: performance with a maneuver in between passes and performance with a limited number of measurements. The performance of the filter is evaluated by analyzing the covariance values generated during the orbit estimation process. Larger covariance values signify reduced performance of the filter. Several variables for the maneuvering satellite are used, including the maneuver direction and the maneuver magnitude. The time of the maneuver is also varied, which …

The translation of advances in clinical research into clinical practice in a manner that provides benefits while reducing potential harm is a challenge within the health care delivery system. Data from a phase III multicenter clinical trial led to the 2012 US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of a 90-minute infusion of rituximab (Rituxan) starting at Cycle 2 for patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma who did not experience a Grade 3 or 4 infusion-related adverse event during Cycle 1. When a periodic anisotropic layered medium is interrupted by a slab of contrasting material, electromagnetic resonance can be manifest in a variety of ways. In one scenario, anisotropy allows for frequency intervals in which waves propagating perpendicular to the layers coexist with evanescent waves. This permits energy to be trapped within the slab at frequencies embedded in the continuous spectrum. These are unstable states that result in resonance under small perturbations. Judicious management of on-chip last-level caches (LLC) is critical to alleviating the memory wall of chip multiprocessors (CMP). Although there already exist many LLC management proposals, belonging to either the spatial or temporal dimension, they fail to capture and utilize the inherent interplays between the two dimensions in capacity management. Therefore, this dissertation is targeted at exploring and exploiting the spatiotemporal interactions in LLC capacity management to improve CMPs' performance. Based on this general idea, we address four specific research problems in the dissertation.

In this study, we have fabricated high performance low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs) with both acicular anodes and cathodes with thin Gd-doped ceria (GDC) electrolyte film. The acicular Ni-Gd_0.1Ce_0.9O_2−δ (Ni-GDC) anode was prepared using freeze drying tape casting, while the hierarchically porous cathode with nano-size Sm_0.5Sr_0.5CoO₃ (SSC) particles covering an acicular GDC skeleton was prepared by a combination of freeze drying tape casting and self-rising approaches. The acicular electrodes with 5–200 μm pores/channels enhance mass transport, while SSC particles of about 50 nm in the cathode promote …
