Little research has focused on the involvement of oxidative stress as it relates to the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA); while inflammation has been extensively studied. The present study evaluates the ability to modulate the response of canine chondrocytes to both inflammation and oxidative stress in an in-vitro model. Chondrocytes were incubated and then stimulated to under-go oxidative stress by using hydrogen peroxide or inflammation using interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha. For inhibition of oxidative stress an antioxidant, N-acetyl-cysteine, was used prior to induction with hydrogen peroxide in a subset of chondrocytes. Mississippi has an abundance of ponds which provides a number of opportunities for anglers. Several enhancement strategies are used to improve fish production in ponds, including fertilizing and supplemental feeding. These strategies may ignore the potential ecological impacts that may unexpectedly arise, such as prolific plant growth. This study consists of two phases; first, a mesocosm experiment investigating fertilizer application rates (mg P/L) in relation to potential sunfish growth, and second, a replicated pond experiment consisting of four treatments to simulate commonly used enhancement strategies. Emergence of avian origin and equine origin canine influenza viruses (CIVs) in Asia and the United States brings important concerns. Humans are in closer and more frequent contact with dogs than other common hosts of influenza. Thus, CIV is a potential threat to human health. However, little is known about the determinants of CIV host tropism or the transmissibility of CIVs to humans. An amino acid change (W222L) was implicated in modifying hemagglutinin receptor binding by CIV. This was tested using reverse genetics, glycan microarray and virus histochemistry. The investigation of thermo-mechanical and thermal treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of DP590 and TRIP680 steels revealed several critical aspects of the materials’ responses to different testing. Various thermo-mechanical treatments were carried out to identify the responses to the said treatments. Following these preconditioning protocols, quasi-static, and high strain-rate tests showed how the materials reacted under tensile testing to fracture. Ensuing heat treatments on the as-received materials were performed to bring about phase fraction changes to each of the steels. Rickettsia parkeri is a tick-borne microorganism, only recently recognized to cause disease in humans. The ecology of this disease is largely unknown, and was addressed through a series of laboratory and field investigations. Feeding behavior of immature stages of the primary vector, Amblyomma maculatum, on mammalian, avian, and reptilian host models was investigated. It was determined that this tick does not feed on anoles, and nymphs do display longer periods of attachment to and are significantly heavier having fed on cotton rats as compared with quail. Digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that is used to detect symmetry and asymmetry of surface temperature gradients. DITI can examine many different aspects of thermal physiology and diagnose injury and disease. Pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria that are commonly associated with Poultry include: Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, Clostridium, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium. These bacteria are often transmitted to the bird from the environment and sometimes to the offspring which may affect bird performance and health. Therefore, the objective of our first experiment was to determine if rooster semen exposed to these bacteria had an effect on sperm motility. Our results indicated that all 6 bacteria lowered sperm motility but the 2 non-pathogenic bacteria, eliminated sperm motility immediately after exposure. The Five Factor Wellness Inventory (5F-Wel-A) was used to measure the five second-order factors of wellness (e.g. Essential Self, Creative Self, Physical Self, Social Self, and Coping Self). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physically measured wood properties using Near Infrared spectroscopy. Physical properties were determined from (2 x 4 x 2 in.) cut samples. Destructive mechanical testing was performed on 744; 8 feet long, No.2 grade 2x4’s. Removal of sediment by dredging causes excessive erosion and ecosystem disruption. The objective of this study is to consider recycled glass as a feasible, economical, and environmentally friendly alternative material for coastal replenishment. Recycled glass cullet possesses the same physical and chemical properties as natural quartz sand found on beaches. A field study conducted in Mississippi showed little variation across three depths. Analysis determined the sediment size ratio (or distribution) of beach sand and glass cullet. Results show the most common grain size of sand in Mississippi is 0.25 mm and the grain size of cullet is comparable. Analytical Spectral …

Sea surface heights from the TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter are assimilated into a three-dimensional primitive equation model to derive the circulation in the South China Sea. With data assimilation the model resolves not only the basinwide circulation but also a dipole off Vietnam and a low/high feature near the Luzon Strait. Mesoscale features are missing in the simulation without data assimilation because of poor resolution in the wind field and inadequate knowledge of the transport through the Luzon Strait. In October 1976, approximately 200 women from seven states met in Boone, North Carolina, at the National Advisory Council on Women's Education. In December 1976, thirty-five of these women met again at Mars Hill College and created a non-profit organization, the Council on Appalachian Women, advocating the advancement of women's education, services, and research to benefit women in the Appalachian region. During its four-year existence, the Council held a total of 71 public forums on Appalachian women's issues.
