A Proposal For A Feasible, First-Step, Legislative Agenda For Divorce Reform, Alan J. Hawkins

American sociologist Andrew Cherlin argues that the institutional boundaries of marriage have shrunk; marriage no longer effectively governs intimate associations before marriage, or structures "proper" pathways to the desired goal of healthy, stable marriage. Personal development and individual emotions are at the core of modern marriage, rather than societal expectations and religious and civil norms. Accordingly, marriages are held together now by internal, psychological forces rather than external, societal forces, and these bonds are substantially weaker. As a result, divorce is common, with about half ending within twenty years; second marriages have even higher rates of disruption. While the divorce …

Social relationships benefit not only mental health but also physical health. This review addresses the following questions: (1) What is the overall magnitude of the effect of social relationships on risk for premature death? (2) How generalized is the effect and are there factors known to influence this association? (3) What are the likely pathways by which social relationships influence longevity? The article concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for potential interventions aimed at reducing risk for mortality.

This research investigated the utilization of silica waste to replace the imported condensed silica fume for the production of ready mixed mortar. The silica waste was classified using sieve analysis procedures in order to achieve a high degree of fineness with a spherical shape and average particle size of 3.2 microns. Classified silica waste was used to replace 10 % volume content weight of Type I Portland cement to produce ready mixed mortar. This paper presented the carbon footprint evaluation of an academic institution, direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were calculated. The major sources of GHG emissions were classified into four main categories, which were energy use, materials use, transportation, and waste (wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal). The aim of this research was to evaluate the GHG emissions of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Chulalongkorn University and to develop alternative options for reduction of the GHG emissions using the Life Cycle Assessment Methodology as a key factor. Accurate data and information about life cycle environmental impacts of building materials are critical for environmental-friendly building design. This paper reports the findings of environmental impacts assessment of marble tiles produced in Thailand. The life cycle assessment (LCA) approach was employed and the ecoindicator 95 methodology was used in the assessment. Six impact categories were assessed; global warming, acidification, ozone depletion, eutrophication, winter smog, and summer smog. The results show that manufacturing phase contributes the highest impacts compared with other phases of the marble tile life cycle, and the block cutting process is the greatest contributor. The Balkinization Of Originalism, James E. Fleming

This Article suggests that, with the publication of Jack Balkin's Living Originalism, we are witnessing the "Balkanization" of originalism (when originalism splits into warring camps) along with the "Balkinization" of originalism (when even Balkin, hitherto a pragmatic living constitutionalist, becomes an originalist). It goes on to argue that Balkin's living originalism is what Ronald Dworkin has called a "moral reading" of the Constitution, for it conceives the Constitution as embodying abstract moral and political principles, not codifying concrete historical rules or practices. Furthermore, despite important differences, there are unmistakable affinities between Balkin's commitment to interpret the Constitution so as to …

Multi-Species Remote Sensing Of Vehicle Emissions On Sherman Way In Van Nuys California, Gary A. Bishop, Brent G. Schuchmann, Donald H. Stedman, Douglas R. Lawson

As part of the 2010 Van Nuys tunnel study, researchers from the University of Denver measured on-road fuel-specific light-duty vehicle emissions from nearly 13,000 vehicles on Sherman Way (0.4 miles west of the tunnel) in Van Nuys, CA with its multi-species FEAT remote sensor a week ahead of the tunnel measurements. The remote sensing mean gram per kilogram carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) measurements are 8.9% lower, 41%, and 24% higher than the tunnel measurements respectively. The remote sensing CO/NOx and HC/NOx mass ratios are 28% lower and 20% higher than …

This paper illustrates the connection between environmental problems, social conflict, and security problems, both individual's security and state's security. It argues that environmental and security problems are not a result of natural resource depletion, environmental degradation, or of a failed state only, but are also caused by the modern sovereign state exercising its rights to possess and manage natural resources over the rights of community. There are two factors that lead to social conflicts and that question the state's legitimacy, which will eventually become a legitimacy problem that challenges the state's security. The Xayaburi Dam is a 1,260 megawatts project proposed to be built on the Mekong River's mainstream in Xayaburi Province, Lao PDR. The projects lead developer is the Thai construction company Ch. Karnchang, the proposed financiers are Thai commercial banks, and 95 percent of the electricity generated would be exported to Thailand. This paper determines how the Xayaburi Dam could affect human security at the regional scale and in the locality of the project, and evaluates the extent to which decision-making through the intergovernmental Mekong River Commission and the energy planning process in Thailand has accounted for these potential changes …
