Game Theory Approach To Transportation Network Vulnerability Measurement, Qixing Wang

The vulnerability of a transportation network is strongly correlated with the ability of the network to withstand shocks and disruptions. A robust network with strategic redundancy allows for the redistribution or reassignment of traffic without unduly compromising system performance. As such, high-volume edges with limited alternative paths represent system vulnerabilities – a feature of transportation networks that has been exploited in the past to identify critical components. In this thesis, a mixed-strategy, two opponents, non-zero sum, combinatorial game theoretical framework are presented for measuring network vulnerability. Biohydrogen Production From Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) In An Anaerobic Hybrid Bioreactor / Parviz Mohammadi, Mohammadi Parviz

The effects of various pretreatment methods on the enrichment of H2 evolving bacterial population and their hydrogen production efficiency using palm oil mill effluent (POME) as substrate were studied. Heat shock pretreatment was shown to be the most effective in enhancing the biological H2 production. Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket fixed film (UASB-FF) bioreactor is a modern bioreactor and was used to generate of biological hydrogen with the help of granulated microbial aggregates. A lab scale UASB-FF bioreactor (2.55 lit) with an external settling tank was successfully designed and operated for biohydrogen production from POME. The use of packing media in …

Beliefs About Development Versus Environmental Tradeoffs In The Puget Sound Region, Thomas G. Safford, Matthew Cutler, Megan M. Henly, Karma Norman, Phillip Levin

Using data from a phone survey of 1,980 Puget Sound residents conducted in 2012, this fact sheet outlines residents’ views about the importance of environmental protection as well as their opinions about energy development, protection of wild salmon, and land use regulation. Seventy-four percent of Puget Sound residents believe that protecting the environment should be a priority even if it means limiting economic growth. The majority of residents favor both increased use of renewable energy (82 percent) and protecting wild salmon (75 percent). Residents are more divided about curbing development, with those from rural areas being more apt to prioritize …

Invadopodia are actin-rich structures at the base of many neoplastic cells that sequester matrix metalloproteases that act to degrade the surrounding stroma to facilitate the invasive process. Conventional invadopodia are dependent upon Src kinase and the large GTPase dynamin 2 (Dyn 2). Whether invadopodia are the only mechanism by which cells degrade matrix is unclear. We have observed that cells of mesenchymal origin degrade matrix in an unique way different from tumor cells. The HYPOTHESIS of this study is that fibroblasts, and other cells of mesenchymal origin, degrade matrix by a mechanism distinct from that of epithelial-based tumor cells. The …

Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) directly influence learning, relationships, mood, and overall scholastic experiences. Research provides evidence that early intervention and prevention efforts can address the needs of students with EBD (Allen-DeBoer, Malmgren, & Glass, 2006; Cook, et al. 2008; Lien-Thorne & Kamps, 2005; Regan, Mastropieri, & Scruggs, 2005; Rivera, Al-Otiba, & Koorland, 2006), but in order to identify these at-risk youth, a screening system is needed to broadly consider Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Concerns (SEBC).This dissertation evaluated the alignment of a teacher nomination process (Teacher Nomination Form (TNF)) and a normative screener of EBD risk (BASC-2 Behavioral and Emotional …
