In this course we will examine selected theological, ethical and missional commitments of the Church of Jesus Christ in our contemporary world. Our chief purpose will be to explore the myriad of ways in which church groups, thinkers, writers and spokespersons have envisaged, understood and interpreted the connection between Christ and culture. These includes the relationship between the “Christ and Caesar”, the word and the world, the interface between Ethics and economics. The Arab Spring (2011) reminded the world both of the power of nonviolence to bring about social change and of the significant costs involved. In this course we will explore the theological and biblical resources in Christianity that support as well as interrogate nonviolent praxis and aggressive nonviolent direct action. We will discuss the spirituality of nonviolence, alternatives to both passivity and violence, justifications of violence and revolution, coercion, responsibility vs. faithfulness, and the pragmatic realities of refusing to kill people in order to improve one's socio-political-economic situation or in order to protect life.

Advocacy And Human Rights, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty

This course is designed to prepare Christian leaders to identify entry points for engagement in social justice advocacy in the context of the global struggle for human rights/justice. In order to approach such advocacy from a uniquely Christian perspective, participants will examine the Christian witness to the state (at all levels) and evaluate the role followers of Jesus have in walking with the oppressed to seek justice for them. Case studies from a variety of Christian and secular organizations will highlight the various levels at which advocacy can occur.

This thesis examines the different accounting standards on the topic of interim financial reporting. It answers the question: What are the differences in accounting reporting standards on interim financial reporting between GAAP and IFRS? As the world becomes more globalized, it is likely that GAAP and IFRS will eventually be merged into one universal set of accounting rules. In order to arrive at this combined set of rules, the differences must first be understood and evaluated. Based on existing theory and research, I have argued which specific approach is preferable. Even after evidence-based treatment, Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with poor long-term outcomes. These outcomes may be partly explained by difficulties in peer functioning, which are common among children with ADHD and which do not respond optimally to standard ADHD treatments. We examined whether peer rejection and lack of dyadic friendships experienced by children with ADHD after treatment contribute to long-term emotional and behavioral problems and global impairment, and whether having a reciprocal friend buffers the negative effects of peer rejection. Prior research has found that perceived discrimination is associated with adverse mental health outcomes among Latinos. However, the process by which this relationship occurs remains an understudied area. The present study investigated the role of acculturative stress in underlying the relationship between perceived discrimination and Latino psychological distress. Also examined was the ability of acculturation to serve as a moderator between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress. Among a sample of Latino adults (N = 669), moderated mediational analyses revealed that acculturative stress mediated the perceived discrimination-psychological distress relationship, and that the link between perceived discrimination and acculturative stress was moderated …

This article describes a conceptual model of cognitive and emotional processes proposed to mediate the relation between youth exposure to family violence and teen dating violence perpetration. Explicit beliefs about violence, internal knowledge structures, and executive functioning are hypothesized as cognitive mediators, and their potential influences upon one another are described. Theory and research on the role of emotions and emotional processes in the relation between youths’ exposure to family violence and teen dating violence perpetration are also reviewed. Quantification of the abundance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in water and oysters from Rhode Island showed the presence of environmental strains and low levels of potentially pathogenic strains when water temperatures were ≥18°C, with peak levels in late July to early August. A higher abundance of the trh gene than of the tdh gene was observed.

Gastrointestinal parasitism in sheep, particularly lambs, results in substantial economic losses to producers worldwide. Nutritional status has been shown to play an important role in host immune response to parasitic infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin E supplementation on an artificial Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) infection in immature lambs. Twenty Dorset lambs were stratified into two treatment groups according to parasite susceptibility. Worm-free lambs, 28 to 32 weeks of age, were supplemented with vitamin E (d-α-tocopherol) for twelve weeks following the recommendations of the National Research Council for minimal daily requirement …

Offshore renewable energy developments (OREDs) are projected to become common in the United States over the next two decades. There are both a need and an opportunity to guide efforts to identify and track impacts to the marine ecosystem resulting from these installations. A monitoring framework and standardized protocols that can be applied to multiple types of ORED would streamline scientific study, management, and permitting at these sites. We present a quantitative comparison between seismic moment tensor (MT) inversion solutions using 1D and 3D synthetic seismograms at two frequency bands for events in the Middle East, to assess the effects of 3D models on source studies. Complex geology associated with the active continental convergent margin leads to a scarcity of reliable, available data, necessitating a thorough examination of solution stability and robustness to assure an accurate description of sources with well‐characterized source parameters.

Recent epidemiological work shows that most victims of interpersonal violence have experienced other forms of violence as well. Similarly, perpetrators of one type of violence often engage in aggression in other contexts, and many people report both perpetration and victimization. This special issue presents 8 studies on the leading edge of research investigating the interconnections among different forms of violence, abuse, and maltreatment. They examine links between sexual and physical abuse, intimate partner violence, teen dating violence, community violence, and violent media. Background: Engagement in cognitively stimulating activities (CA) and leisure time physical activity (PA) have been associated with maintaining cognitive performance and reducing the likelihood of cognitive decline in older adults. However, neural mechanisms underlying protective effects of these lifestyle behaviors are largely unknown. In the current study, we investigated the effect of self-reported PA and CA on hippocampal volume and semantic processing activation during a fame discrimination task, as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The Pediatric Self-Management Model provides an overview of how behavioral factors influence children’s chronic medical illnesses. This general framework is used to organize the present review of how self-management behaviors, contextual factors, and processes impact health outcomes for adolescent youth with type 1 diabetes. Adherence has been widely studied in the diabetes literature, and there are consistent findings demonstrating associations between aspects of self-management, adherence, and metabolic control, yet there are still equivocal approaches to adherence assessment methodology (e.g. global versus specific measures). The apolipoproteinE epsilon4 (APOE-?4) allele is associated with cognitive decline in old age and is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Physical activity (P A) is associated with a reduced risk of incident cognitive impairment, particularly among APOE-?4 carriers. We recently reported greater semantic memory related brain activation in cognitively intact physically active (High P A) APOE-?4 carriers compared to physically inactive (Low PA) ?4 carriers and non-carriers (Smith et al., 2011). Although the current political landscape differs from the day preceding the January 25 revolution, Egypt appears to suffer from a familiar syndrome: for every step taken towards meaningful reform, it falls back two steps due to entrenched counter- revolutionary forces. This began the moment the military took control of the executive branch on February 11, 2011 only to unilaterally replace the 1971 constitution with its own interim Constitutional Declaration on March 30, 2011. This dubious document unilaterally imposed by SCAF barely holds Egypt together as the country faces one legal crisis after another.

Many of the letters, cards and emails of condolence that I received after my father, Professor Hans Smit, passed away last year were from lawyers who had appeared before my father, serving as arbitrator, in international arbitrations. Most said very nice things about my father, some over the top: “worthy of canonization,” “a force of nature,” “Odysseus,” an “icon.” Others were kind but more restrained (coming perhaps from attorneys whose clients fared less well before my father): “creative,” “indomitable,” “fair but scary.” One of my favorites, from a non-native English speaker, was even more neutral, describing my father simply as …
