Chronic Orofacial Pain Influences Self-Regulation In A Rodent Model, Tracey Christine Kniffin Jan 2012

Chronic Orofacial Pain Influences Self-Regulation In A Rodent Model, Tracey Christine Kniffin

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Self-regulation is the capacity to exert control over cognition, emotion, behavior, and physiology. Since chronic pain interferes with the ability to self-regulate, the primary goal of this study was to examine, in rodents, the effects of chronic pain on self-regulation processes. Sixteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: (1) chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION) and (2) naïve. Testing confirmed that CCI-ION animals had significant mechanical allodynia compared to naïve animals (p<0.001). A two-part self-regulation behavioral paradigm consisting of a cued go/no-go task and a subsequent persistence task was developed based on human paradigms. In the cued task, both groups made fewer incorrect lever presses in post-surgery trials (p<0.001); naive animals had a greater decrease in number of incorrect presses than CCI-ION animals (p=0.06). Similarly, both groups had a larger correct to total lever presses ratio in post-surgery trials (p<0.001); naïve animals had a greater increase than CCI-ION animals (p=0.06). In the persistence task, naïve animals experienced a greater decrease in lever presses (p=0.08) than did CCI-ION animals (p=0.66). These results suggest that animals experiencing chronic pain were not able to learn as well as naïve animals, and may have difficulty responding to novel environmental demands.

Going Green: Paperless Technology And Feedback From The Classroom, Janna Arney, Irma S. Jones, Angela Wolf

Management Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to measure the following: student satisfaction with the paperless classroom; student satisfaction with paperless feedback; and costs savings as a result of the paperless classroom. Traditionally, software courses are paper-intensive because of the large amount of assignments being submitted for grading by students. In an effort to “go green,” this study is proposing the electronic submission of software assignments and electronic feedback by instructors using Blackboard’s virtual hard drive and USB flash drives. The response from students on their satisfaction with electronic submission and feedback of assignments was overwhelmingly positive. The study also resulted …

Act Iii Of The Ministerial Exception Colloquy Essay, Paul Horwitz Jan 2012

Act Iii Of The Ministerial Exception Colloquy Essay, Paul Horwitz

Essays, Reviews, and Shorter Works

The Supreme Court's recent decision in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. EEOC marks a resounding victory for the principle of church self-governance and the autonomy of religious institutions. But it is just the beginning of the story, not the end. Hosanna-Tabor properly recognizes that a significant measure of church autonomy is a key element part of the American church-state settlement, and may signal a broader recognition of the important role played by nonstate institutions in our social infrastructure. But it does not tell us how churches should behave under such a regime of autonomy, or how those inside …

Empty Protection And Meaningless Review—The Need To Reform California's Stagnant Capital Clemency System, Brittney Cunningham Jan 2012

Empty Protection And Meaningless Review—The Need To Reform California's Stagnant Capital Clemency System, Brittney Cunningham

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Note examines California’s stagnant capital clemency system and its ability to properly function as a fail safe against miscarriages of justice. Finding that the state’s clemency system lacks transparency, appears arbitrary, and is strained by political pressure, this Note argues that California’s system of wide discretion fails to provide a meaningful review of clemency petitions. To restore clemency’s failsafe function, this Note urges California to create a clemency board and provide procedural guidelines for the board to follow when addressing petitions. This Note asserts that by enacting these reforms, California will invigorate its stagnant clemency system and ensure that …

Ashcroft V. Al-Kidd: Troubling Developments In Post-9/11 Fourth Amendment Jurisprudence, David Doeling Jan 2012

Ashcroft V. Al-Kidd: Troubling Developments In Post-9/11 Fourth Amendment Jurisprudence, David Doeling

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In March 2003, FBI agents pretextually arrested Abdullah al-Kidd under the federal material witness statute. As a result, al-Kidd brought a Bivens action in federal district court against U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. The court denied Ashcroft’s assertions of absolute and qualified immunity, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed. In Aschroft v. al-Kidd the U.S. Supreme Court correctly held that qualified immunity protected Ashcroft against al-Kidd’s lawsuit. But the Court’s unnecessary conclusion that Ashcroft did not violate the Fourth Amendment is troubling. Not only did the Court expand the “objectively reasonable” test that is typically …

Confronting Forensics: Bullcoming V. New Mexico And The Sixth Amendment, Megan Weisgerber Jan 2012

Confronting Forensics: Bullcoming V. New Mexico And The Sixth Amendment, Megan Weisgerber

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2004 Crawford v. Washington decision drastically altered the long-standing Confrontation Clause jurisprudence, refocusing the constitutional inquiry on the testimonial nature of a witness’s statement but leaving for another day any effort to spell out a comprehensive definition of the term “testimonial.” Thus began the current line of Confrontation Clause cases, each of which sought to clarify the Sixth Amendment’s confrontation protections but arguably clouded any clarity that the case before it brought. In 2009, the Court decided Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts, in which it held that a forensic laboratory report prepared for a criminal trial is …

Game Over For Regulating Violent Video Games? The Effect Of Brown V. Entertainment Merchants Ass’N On First Amendment Jurisprudence, Garrett Mathew-James Mott Jan 2012

Game Over For Regulating Violent Video Games? The Effect Of Brown V. Entertainment Merchants Ass’N On First Amendment Jurisprudence, Garrett Mathew-James Mott

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As early as 1976, video games started to incorporate aspects of violence, such as striking enemies with a vehicle or using explosives to destroy a structure. Still, initially, courts were reluctant to assign the same constitutional protections to video games that they had granted to other protected media like motion pictures and written and musical works. But as technology progressed, courts, too, matured, becoming more open to the notion that video games should be a form of protected expression. Yet, some courts lost sight of the First Amendment’s vision and reconsidered their earlier decisions in which they upheld the constitutionality …

Becoming Indonesians: The Bā ʿAlawī In The Interstices Of The Nation, Ismail Fajrie Alatas

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper examines the Bāʿ Alawī—a group of Ḥaḍramī diaspora acknowledged as the descendants of Prophet Muḥammad—in post-colonial Indonesia. In particular, it observes the Bā ʿAlawī scholars' creative adaptation and manipulation of their Sufi path, ṭartqa 'alawiyya y in their attempt to secure their place within the wider imagination of Indonesian nationhood while protecting their distinctive genealogical eminence. In the twentieth century the t̠arīqa, which had long functioned to secure their identity, differentiate them from others and nurture their diasporic consciousness, proved incompatible with the assimilationist discourse of the nation. Further challenges came from Islamic reformism, preaching egalitarianism increasingly defined …

Banda communities play an important role in maritime commerce in the eastern part of Indonesia at the beginning of the colonial period. They survive as one cultural group in two villages on the islands of Kei. The traditional songs of the two villages center on the sea voyage. The argument is that Banda people are mobilized by oral traditions that reveal the kinship ties of Banda people with their partners …

Presidential Strategy: Analyzing The National Security Stategies Of The United States, Aaron Dilday Jan 2012

Presidential Strategy: Analyzing The National Security Stategies Of The United States, Aaron Dilday

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Second World War forced American politicians to reevaluate the nation's security preparedness. This resulted in the National Security Act of 1947, which, among many things, created the National Security Council and an ad hoc system for American strategy-making. The Cold War revealed many of the deficiencies in this strategy-making system. The Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 sought to reform the nation's defense establishment to meet the evolving needs of the Cold War; part of this included revision of strategic development. Section 603 of Goldwater-Nichols required the president to annually submit to Congress a national security strategy …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The present study was conducted to investigate the impact of textile dye on the early seedling stage of 3 crops: barley, maize, and wheat. Seeds were imbibed in different concentrations of textile dye for 12 h and were then grown in a controlled growth room for 8 days with a related dye solution. Some growth and polyphasic chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured and analysed to appraise the effect of textile dye on the 3 crops. Although different crop species showed differences in response to different concentrations, textile dye generally affected almost all radicle growth parameters more adversely than coleoptile growth …
