On The Biharmonic Vector Fields, Mustapha Djaa, Hichem Elhendi, Seddik Ouakkas Jan 2012

On The Biharmonic Vector Fields, Mustapha Djaa, Hichem Elhendi, Seddik Ouakkas

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The problem studied in this paper is related to the biharmonicity of a vector field from a Riemannian manifold (M,g) to its tangent bundle TM equipped with the Sasaki metric g^s. We show that a vector field on a compact manifold is biharmonic if and only if is harmonic. We also investigate the biharmonicity of vector field of M, as a map from (M,g) to (TM,g^s).

Generalized Berwald Metrics, Esmaeil Peyghan, Akbar Tayebi Jan 2012

Generalized Berwald Metrics, Esmaeil Peyghan, Akbar Tayebi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we consider a class of Finsler metrics called generalized Berwald metrics which contains the class of Berwald metrics as a special case. We prove that every generalized Berwald metrics with non-zero scalar flag curvature or isotropic Berwald curvature is a Randers metric. Then we prove that on generalized Berwald metrics, the notions of generalized Landsberg and Landsberg curvatures are equivalent.

Weight And Nonlinearity Of Boolean Functions, Lavinia Corina Ciungu Jan 2012

Weight And Nonlinearity Of Boolean Functions, Lavinia Corina Ciungu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we analyze the weight and the nonlinearity of various types of Boolean functions. We give some general results related to rotation symmetric Boolean functions, and in particular, we prove partially a conjecture stated by Cusick and Stanica in [3].

Results Of Generalized Local Cohomology Modules Of A-Minimax Modules, Hero Saremi Jan 2012

Results Of Generalized Local Cohomology Modules Of A-Minimax Modules, Hero Saremi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring, M a finitely generated R-module, and N a minimax R-module. It is shown that if a is an ideal of R, such that cd(a)=1, where cd is the cohomological dimension of a in R, then H_a^j(M, N) and Ext_R^i(M,H_a^j(N)) are a-cominimax for all i,j. Furthermore, if t is a non-negative integer such that H_a^j(M, N) is a-minimax for all j

Essential Normality For Certain Weighted Composition Operators On The Hardy Space H^2, Mahsa Fatehi, Bahram Khani Robati Jan 2012

Essential Normality For Certain Weighted Composition Operators On The Hardy Space H^2, Mahsa Fatehi, Bahram Khani Robati

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We characterize the essentially normal weighted composition operators C_{\psi,\varphi} on the Hardy space H^2, whenever \varphi is a linear-fractional transformation and \psi \in A(D). Also we investigate the essential normality problem for some other weighted composition operators on H^2.

Background Factors That Affect Pilot Success In Regional Airline Training, Derek Alan Herchko Jan 2012

Background Factors That Affect Pilot Success In Regional Airline Training, Derek Alan Herchko

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Following the Colgan Air accident in February 2009, the U.S. Congress and the traveling public called for increased flight experience requirements for pilots of regional airlines. In response, Congress enacted the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Act of 2010 . This legislation required that regional airline pilots, inclusive of first officers, have an Airline Transport Pilot certificate and a minimum of 1,500 total flight hours. This legislation had a provision that allowed the Federal Aviation Administration to create credit toward flight hours for pilots who had specific academic training courses above normal pilot certification. The Pilot Source Study was …

Does The Stock Market's Equity Risk Premium Respond To Consumer Confidence Or Is It The Other Way Around?, Abdur Chowdhury, Barry K. Mendelson Jan 2012

Does The Stock Market's Equity Risk Premium Respond To Consumer Confidence Or Is It The Other Way Around?, Abdur Chowdhury, Barry K. Mendelson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The increase in the equity risk premium during the 2007- 2009 Great Recession and the aging of the baby boomers in the United States have led analysts and financial industry experts to believe that risk aversion among stock investors has moved to a more-permanently higher range. If so, stocks would cease being an attractive asset class to be investing in for the future. In the past few years private investors have by and large shunned equities, just when stocks have become attractively priced and offer long-term potential for superior above-historical-average returns. Our empirical findings show that the recent increase in …

Recovering From A Traumatic Job Loss, Ann Chu Jan 2012

Recovering From A Traumatic Job Loss, Ann Chu

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract In addition to satisfying basic human needs such as food and shelter, jobs can also satisfy an individual's need for identity, creative expression, and purpose. Job loss constitutes a major life stressor that can negatively affect one's financial stability, social standing, and sense of well being. Resilience represents those characteristics that help an individual bounce back quickly from a traumatic event. This study examined the role of resilience in laid-off employees recovering from job loss. Ten participants completed a survey and interview in this mixed methods study. Personal competence, social support, and family coherence were determined to most strongly …

A textual analysis was performed on the data, using an a priori approach to coding and analysis. An analysis of the data identified seven key themes that were critical for transformational learning in adults: (a) A Call to Adventure; (b) Being Open to Experience; (c) Entering a Zone Unknown; (d) Extra-Ordinary & Challenging …

Vivacity: Discovering Zora Through Her Words, Kerri J. Alexander Jan 2012

Vivacity: Discovering Zora Through Her Words, Kerri J. Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In its simplest form, storytelling is the passing of information from one person to the next. When storytelling illuminates time, place and purpose, it is then able to entertain, comfort and transport any listener. As the keeper of the imagination, the storyteller has inspired me as a performer. After reading Zora Neale Hurston‘s Every Tongue Got to Confess, I found my single-defining connection to the art of storytelling. Halimuhfack ultimately became my thesis performance piece inspired by the folk tales from Every Tongue Got To Confess. The new theatre piece shares Hurston‘s folk tale the way it may have once …

A Discussion Of Robert Schumann's Compositional Process In The Song Cycle Frauenliebe Und -Leben, Brittany Monique Denham Jan 2012

A Discussion Of Robert Schumann's Compositional Process In The Song Cycle Frauenliebe Und -Leben, Brittany Monique Denham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Robert Schumann’s compositional work during 1840 stands out as an unexpected turn of events. With relatively no background composing songs, Schumann suddenly produced a plethora of widely successful and monetarily lucrative songs all within one year. Perhaps most fascinating was the amount of detail Schumann placed into each song. This detail can be seen in the sketches which include the composer’s handwritten edits in both the piano and vocal scores. With a focus on Schumann’s song cycle, Frauenliebe und -leben the qualities of Schumann’s songs and the compositional process used to create the songs’ final versions are examined through this …

The Legacy Of Civil Rights Protest Music: Sweet Honey In The Rock's "The Ballad Of Harry T. Moore", Thomas Hyder Jan 2012

The Legacy Of Civil Rights Protest Music: Sweet Honey In The Rock's "The Ballad Of Harry T. Moore", Thomas Hyder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the role music played in the Civil Rights Movement as a form of political protest. The first part of the studies analyzed how political protest music was used in the early part of the twentieth-century leading up to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. An analysis of the role of music in African-American culture also provides a historical background to the music-making of the Civil Rights Movement. Specific musical forms such as topical ballads, freedom songs, and spirituals are examined. In addition, musical influences of African culture as well as religious influences on music-making during the …

Performing Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years: An Exercise In Communication On Stage And Off, David Z. Sucharski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Communication, in its most basic sense, is foundational for any personal, human interaction and relationship. As theatre artists, we are charged with communicating complex story lines, conceptual ideas, and emotion to an audience. Sound communication is paramount to every aspect of a musical production, be it communication between actors/characters, actor and director, amongst the production team, and arguable the most important, between the actors and the audience. My years of education as a Masters in Fine Arts candidate in Musical Theatre have been spent polishing my ability to communicate physical and emotional choices with greater accuracy, depth, and truth. By …

The Last Two Years Of David Brachman: Designing A Feature Film On A Micro Budget, Elizabeth Anne Sutphin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents my creative process as the Production Designer on the feature length micro budget film The Last Two Years of David Brachman, written and directed by Marc Casilli. The film is a dark comedy chronicling the life of David Brachman, a twenty-five year old with a stagnant life that is seemingly leading nowhere, as he pledges on his twenty-fifth birthday to change the path of his life in the next two years or commit suicide if he fails. The overall design concept of the film is rooted in realism, but allowed to contain elements that will remove the …

Radio Drama: A "Visual Sound" Analysis Of John, George And Drew Baby, Pascha Weaver Jan 2012

Radio Drama: A "Visual Sound" Analysis Of John, George And Drew Baby, Pascha Weaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Radio Plays are a form of classic American Theatre that relies on dialogue, music and sound effects to audibly enhance a story with no visual component. While these types of plays are no longer at the forefront of modern day theatrical experience, I believe these popular plays of the mid-20th century are derivative of an oral storytelling tradition and significant to American entertainment culture. This thesis will discuss the aspects of radio plays that viscerally captured audiences. While this concept can be applied to many popular America radio shows of the time, this thesis will focus on one form ; …

Who Do I Play: Appraising The Impact Of Teacher-In-Role With Kindergartners In An Esol Classroom, Kathryn Perkins Brantley Jan 2012

Who Do I Play: Appraising The Impact Of Teacher-In-Role With Kindergartners In An Esol Classroom, Kathryn Perkins Brantley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Educators employing process drama, a non-presentational dramatic form, establish memorable classroom environments where students co-author their learning with teachers. Process drama facilitators often use the dramatic structure of teacher-in-role to guide and support the students. An instructor heightens tension, introduces new ideas, and encourages participation by engaging alongside students as a character. An educator employing process drama needs to determine the appropriate type of role to impact the development of a classroom drama; while negotiating tension felt between desires for student-led discovery and the necessity of meeting curriculum benchmarks. Academic studies establish process drama as a tool to aid English …

The Machine, The Victim, And The Third Thing: Navigating The Gender Spectrum In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake And The Year Of The Flood, Lindsay Mccoy Anderson Jan 2012

The Machine, The Victim, And The Third Thing: Navigating The Gender Spectrum In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake And The Year Of The Flood, Lindsay Mccoy Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores Atwood's depiction of gender in Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood. In an interview from 1972, Margaret Atwood spoke on survival: "People see two alternatives. You can be part of the machine or you can be something that gets run over by it. And I think there has to be a third thing." I assert that Atwood depicts this "third thing" through her characters who navigate between the binaries of "masculine" and "feminine" in a third realm of gender. As the female characters—regardless of their passive or aggressive behavior—engage in a quest for agency, …

Harvesting The Seeds Of Early American Human And Nonhuman Animal Relationships In William Bartram's Travels, The Travel Diary Of Elizabeth House Trist, And Sarah Trimmer's Fabulous Histories, Leslie Blake Vives Jan 2012

Harvesting The Seeds Of Early American Human And Nonhuman Animal Relationships In William Bartram's Travels, The Travel Diary Of Elizabeth House Trist, And Sarah Trimmer's Fabulous Histories, Leslie Blake Vives

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses ecofeminist and human-animal studies lenses to explore human animal and nonhuman animal relations in early America. Most ecocritical studies of American literature begin with nineteenth-century writers. This project, however, suggests that drawing on ecofeminist theories with a human-animal studies approach sheds light on eighteenth-century texts as well. Early American naturalist travel writing offers a site replete with human and nonhuman encounters. Specifically, naturalist William Bartram's travel journal features interactions with animals in the southern colonial American frontier. Amateur naturalist Elizabeth House Trist's travel diary includes interactions with frontier and domestic animals. Sarah Trimmer's Fabulous Histories, a conduct …

The Boys' Republic, Jonas Mueller Jan 2012

The Boys' Republic, Jonas Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The young men in The Boys’ Republic live in a world that is continually falling apart. Their houses collapse into sinkholes, forest fires carve out chunks of their towns, plague spreads through their communes, the money runs out on the construction project where they work. This decay mirrors their own collapsing identities, as they are forced to question their mastery of nature, their nostalgia for their youth, their relationships with others, and the value of masculinity itself. Drawing on the work of writers like Dennis Cooper, Flannery O’Connor, and Benjamin Percy, The Boys’ Republic depicts men in the midst of …

Life History Response To Infection And The Potential For Dishonest Signals In The Ground Cricket, Allonemobius Socius, Emily Copeland Jan 2012

Life History Response To Infection And The Potential For Dishonest Signals In The Ground Cricket, Allonemobius Socius, Emily Copeland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to maximize fitness, individuals must partition their limited resources among competing physiological processes, creating negative statistical associations between processes known as “life-history trade-offs”. Evidence indicates that individuals tend to decrease their reproductive investment when confronted with a significant immunological challenge in order to increase investment in immune defense. This trade-off is often accompanied by a significant decrease in the sexual signal, which provides an honest signal of the male’s infection status to potential mates. However, if individual residual reproductive value is low, they may instead increase their reproductive investment to maximize reproductive success before the end of their …

Meeting At Middle Ground: American Quaker Women’S Two Palestinian Encounters, Enaya Othman Jan 2012

Meeting At Middle Ground: American Quaker Women’S Two Palestinian Encounters, Enaya Othman

Arabic Languages and Literatures

In the late nineteenth century the Palestinian town of Ramallah began receiving American missionary women who embodied their middle-class ideology of womanhood and ventured to discourse on Arab women and culture. Their conviction of the American woman as the model for other “unfortunate” women prevented these missionaries from integrating in the Palestinian cultural context. Consequently, this americentric belief led them to construct overwhelmingly negative views of Palestinian women as oppressed, living in ignorance and degraded conditions, and of Arab culture as backward and inept. However, American women missionaries after World War I grew in their cultural and linguistic understanding of …
