Dissertations

Problem

A challenge faced by the theology-and-science dialogue is how to effectively communicate across disciplinary lines. The community assumes that there is a methodology or cluster of methodologies that allows for interdisciplinary conversation to take place. However, the community is not in agreement about how this process should occur or the hermeneutical principles that should guide it. Is it possible to surmount the problem of methodological compatibility and to generate mutually beneficial and fruitful dialogue through seeking a point of commonality between all the disciplines of the theology-and-science dialogue?

Purpose

The purpose of this dissertation is to discover a philosophical …

Auditing's Ripple Effect: Divergence After Enron, Kelley Wolff Jan 2012

Auditing's Ripple Effect: Divergence After Enron, Kelley Wolff

Honors Theses

The Enron scandal received considerable attention over the past 10 years (2001-2011), and the fallout from Enron, WorldCom, and Adelphia were severe. Both auditors and accountants lost the trust of the government and the public. This caused the government to intervene by enacting the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and creating the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to oversee the audits of public companies. This study will examine how the differences in perspectives amongst gender, as well as public and GCAS auditors, factors into personal opinions by admistering a research survey and studying literature surrounding the Enron scandal.

Spectroscopy And Dynamics Of The Predissociated, Quasi-Linear S2 State Of Chlorocarbene, Chong Tao, Craig A. Richmond, Calvin Mukarakate, S. H. Kable, Eric C. Brown, Richard Dawes, Phalgun Lolur, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

In this work, we report on the spectroscopy and dynamics of the quasi-linear S2 state of chlorocarbene, CHCl, and its deuterated isotopologue using optical-optical double resonance (OODR) spectroscopy through selected rovibronic levels of the S1 state. This study, which represents the first observation of the S2 state in CHCl, builds upon our recent examination of the corresponding state in CHF, where pronounced mode specificity was observed in the dynamics, with predissociation rates larger for levels containing bending excitation. In the present work, a total of 14 S2 state vibrational levels with angular momentum ℓ = 1 …

Potential Energy And Dipole Moment Surfaces Of Hco- For The Search Of H- In The Interstellar Medium, M. Ayouz, I. Mikhailov, Dmitri Babikov, M. Raoult, S. Galtier, O. Dulieu, V. Kokoouline Jan 2012

Potential Energy And Dipole Moment Surfaces Of Hco- For The Search Of H- In The Interstellar Medium, M. Ayouz, I. Mikhailov, Dmitri Babikov, M. Raoult, S. Galtier, O. Dulieu, V. Kokoouline

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Potential energy and permanent dipole moment surfaces of the electronic ground state of formyl negative ion HCO− are determined for a large number of geometries using the coupled-cluster theory with single and double and perturbative treatment of triple excitations ab initio method with a large basis set. The obtained data are used to construct interpolated surfaces, which are extended analytically to the region of large separations between CO and H− with the multipole expansion approach. We have calculated the energy of the lowest rovibrational levels of HCO− that should guide the spectroscopic characterization of HCO− in laboratory experiments. The study …

Realizing Breakthrough Radical Innovations In Ce/It Industries, Shengfa Johnson Chuang Jan 2012

Realizing Breakthrough Radical Innovations In Ce/It Industries, Shengfa Johnson Chuang

Student Scholarship

Whereas incremental innovation (II) involves minor changes to an existing product or service, radical innovation (RI) creates a new user experience by altering the cognitive ecosystem of products and creating new markets. Recent RI products such as Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iTunes and Amazon's Kindle have demonstrated the potentially salubrious effect of RI. However, technological uncertainty, business inexperience, and unknown customer preferences render RI a high-risk proposition. Accordingly, the innovation processes of RI and II are different: whereas II is widely studied through gate and structured process models, comparatively little is known about how to engage and manage RI. One …

The Elusive "Marketplace" In Post-Bilski Jurisprudence, Andrew Chin Jan 2012

The Elusive "Marketplace" In Post-Bilski Jurisprudence, Andrew Chin

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Bilski v. Kappos appears to have provided inadequate guidance to the courts and the Patent Office regarding the scope of the abstract-ideas exclusion from patentable subject matter. Federal Circuit Chief Judge Randall R. Rader, however, appears to have found in that decision a clear vindication of his own view that the machine-or-transformation test is incorrectly grounded in “the age of iron and steel at a time of subatomic particles and terabytes,” and thus fails, for example, to accommodate advances in “software [that] transform[] our lives without physical anchors.” Chief Judge Rader has subsequently authored …

The Overrepresentation Of Minorities In Special Education: A Conceptual Analysis Of A Longstanding Conundrum, Aimee Sargent Jan 2012

The Overrepresentation Of Minorities In Special Education: A Conceptual Analysis Of A Longstanding Conundrum, Aimee Sargent

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this analysis is to examine the issue of overrepresentation of minorities in special education, with a focus on the varying conceptual and theoretical perspectives among scholars and educators regarding the causes and potential solutions to the problem. Views of the issue will be described by comparing traditional perspectives with nontraditional perspectives. Further scrutiny of these views then leads to an analysis of differing epistemologies, contrasting the realist/objective view with that of non-realist constructivism. Thorough examinations of these issues provide a framework of overrepresentation in light of disability and race conceptualizations and present a new approach for addressing …

The Question Of Courage, William I. Miller Jan 2012

The Question Of Courage, William I. Miller

Articles

Courage is first among virtues in heroic epic and in cultures of honor. Men cared to be known for their courage. It not only took courage to fight well, but the issue often being fought over was who had more of it. Courage was competitive. Men were ranked according to the degree of courage they possessed. Arguments arose as to what counted as truly courageous, what the perfect form of the virtue was, and what were lesser though still worthy semblances of it. Not only philosophers theorized about courage: warriors, politicians and spectators did so as well. The stakes were …

Far Part 139 Certificated Airports Shifting Towards Environmentally-Friendly Practices, Timothy A. Bannon

Research Papers

While the aviation industry has grown dramatically in the past 100 years, it has done so with minimal environmental awareness. Leaders in the industry must become more conscious of environmentally-friendly practices available for airport use. This research provides a discussion of technology and sustainable practices available for use at U.S. airports. This research also provides funding information available to airports for sustainable projects. The methodology used in this research study was a review of literature that examined environmental reports, federal regulations, periodicals, political statements, and professional articles related to the topic. Environmental sustainability and climate change as it relates to …

Research Papers

AN ABSTRACT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER OF

Kouassi Aziafo Magnon, for the Masters of Science degree in Economics, presented on February 20, 2012 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

TITLE: FOREIGN AID, INEQUALITY, AND POVERTY: IS THE EFFECT IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA DIFFERENT?

MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Kevin Sylwester

The purpose of this paper is to examine if the impact of foreign aid on inequality and poverty differs in sub-Saharan Africa compared to other regions. Using cross sectional and panel data analysis, we find that there is no strong evidence that foreign aid differently affects income disparity and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. These …

Day Programming For Aging Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Review Of What Is And What Should Be, Kelly E. Norris Evans

Research Papers

The life expectancy of individuals with intellectual disabilities has risen with the improvement of medical technology and improved access to health care, which has resulted in a new need to provide supports to these individuals in their later years. Presently there is no clear model on how to provide these services to this growing population. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine differences in nursing home and Intellectual Disability services in an effort to determine suggestions on best practices for programming for aging adults that have intellectual disabilities.
