Skewed Alpha-Stable Distributions For Modeling And Classification Of Musical Instruments, Mehmet Erdal Özbek, Mehmet Emre Çek, Feri̇t Acar Savaci

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Music information retrieval and particularly musical instrument classification has become a very popular research area for the last few decades. Although in the literature many feature sets have been proposed to represent the musical instrument sounds, there is still need to find a superior feature set to achieve better classification performance. In this paper, we propose to use the parameters of skewed alpha-stable distribution of sub-band wavelet coefficients of musical sounds as features and show the effectiveness of this new feature set for musical instrument classification. We compare the classification performance with the features constructed from the parameters of generalized …

A Pseudo Spot Price Of Electricity Algorithm Applied To Environmental Economic Active Power Dispatch Problem, Celal Yaşar Jan 2012

A Pseudo Spot Price Of Electricity Algorithm Applied To Environmental Economic Active Power Dispatch Problem, Celal Yaşar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, an environmental economic active power dispatch problem is transformed into an optimization problem with a single-objective function by applying the weighted sum method (WSM) and the conic scalarization method (CSM). A pseudo spot price of electricity algorithm (PSPA) is used to solve the transformed problem. This is demonstrated on an example problem, which is a lossy electrical power system having only thermal units The WSM and CSM methods are applied to the example problem, and the weight factor values of these methods is increased from 0 to 1 by a step size of 0.1. For each possible …

Optimal In Vitro Realization Of Pulsatile Coronary Artery Flow Waveforms Using Closed-Loop Feedback Algorithms With Multiple Flow Control Devices, Serdar Yilmaz, Onur Toker, Nurullah Arslan, Herman Sedef Jan 2012

Optimal In Vitro Realization Of Pulsatile Coronary Artery Flow Waveforms Using Closed-Loop Feedback Algorithms With Multiple Flow Control Devices, Serdar Yilmaz, Onur Toker, Nurullah Arslan, Herman Sedef

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we study optimal in vitro realization of pulsatile coronary artery flows using newly proposed closed-loop feedback algorithms with a clearly defined mathematical performance objective, and we compare several flow control device technologies in terms of their ability to generate pulsatile flow signals as accurately as possible. In the literature, there are several published results for in vitro pulsatile flow realization systems. However, most of the proposed systems operate in an open-loop setting and use a single flow control device, and their performance is assessed mostly by graphical means without a clearly defined mathematical performance objective. Furthermore, some …

A Novel Approach For Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generations Based On Static Voltage Stability Margin, Mohsen Rezaie Estabragh, Mohsen Mohammadian, Mehdi Shafiee Jan 2012

A Novel Approach For Optimal Allocation Of Distributed Generations Based On Static Voltage Stability Margin, Mohsen Rezaie Estabragh, Mohsen Mohammadian, Mehdi Shafiee

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a newly developed approach to find the optimal location of distributed generations (DGs) to improve power system voltage stability margin and reduce losses incorporating the constraints. The loadability limit index is used to assess the static voltage stability security margin, which is associated with the point of voltage collapse limit. Based on this, a toolbox is developed to recognize the loadability margin in power networks. Finally, the mentioned problem is modeled as a nonlinear and multiobjective optimization problem. The proposed method establishes a tradeoff between the security index and power losses in DG placement using the hybrid …

A Novel Motor Speed Calculation Method Using Square Wave Speed Sensor Signals Via Fast Fourier Transform, Hayri̇ Arabaci, Osman Bi̇lgi̇n Jan 2012

A Novel Motor Speed Calculation Method Using Square Wave Speed Sensor Signals Via Fast Fourier Transform, Hayri̇ Arabaci, Osman Bi̇lgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a novel motor speed measurement method and experimental results using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Motor speed is obtained using the square wave output signal of a speed sensor. In the proposed method, the speed can be measured in a wide range, and transient speed changes can also be clearly observed. The experiments were conducted during start-up and in steady state. The sampled speed data were transformed to frequency spectrums using the FFT. The frequency, which corresponds to the maximum amplitude in the spectrum, was used to calculate the motor speed. The test results show that the …

Voltage Stability Via Energy Function Analysis On Reduced Order Model Of Power System, Ahmet Çi̇fci̇, Yilmaz Uyaroğlu, Mehmet Ali̇ Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A power system is a typical nonlinear dynamical system and voltage stability is an important subject of power system stability. This paper describes the use of the variable gradient method in a reduced order model of a single-machine infinite-bus power system. Additionally, the system's Lyapunov (energy) function is created and thus the system's energy level changes' effects on the system's stability are shown using the MACSYMA program. The Lyapunov function allows the determination of stability for nonlinear systems without the need to find exact solutions.

Analysis And Characterization Of Longitudinal Flux Single-Sided Linear Switched Reluctance Machines, Lenin Chokkalingam, Arumugam Rengasamy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Linear switched reluctance motors (LSRMs) have recently gained more popularity for propulsion drives. This paper contributes a certain design improvement to reduce the force ripple in LSRMs. By affixing a pole cap in the stator pole, the target is achieved. Finite element analysis has been carried out to predict the performance of the basic and proposed structures. Motor performances for different load conditions are simulated. The application of fast Fourier transform has been utilized to envisage the vibration frequencies. The experimental results are well correlated with the predicted results.

Tibial Acceleration In Male And Female Distance Runners In Reduced Body Weight Conditions, Brendan J. Rickert Jan 2012

Tibial Acceleration In Male And Female Distance Runners In Reduced Body Weight Conditions, Brendan J. Rickert

PTHMS Graduate Research

Seventy-two percent of all stress fractures in athletes come from running, which can cause an immediate cessation of training. Additionally, fifty percent of all stress fractures occur in the distal end of the tibia. One way to keep the athlete moving without slowing down the healing process is using an unloader treadmill (TM) in a rehabilitation setting. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship between the level of body weight (BW) unloading in an Anti-Gravity Treadmill and tibial acceleration. Fifteen collegiate cross-country team runners (Gender: 9 males, 6 females; Age: 20.4 ± 2.4 years; Weight 60.1 ± 12.6 …

The Association Of Natural Elements And Trail Use By Adults, Anna E. Greer, Julian A. Reed, Steve P. Hooker

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

We used the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities to examine the association between variations in natural elements (ie, season, weather, and temperature) and adults’ use of a rail-trail in South Carolina (2006-2009). Most (62%) of the 4,468 trail users observed were walkers; 38% were observed participating in vigorous physical activity. Adults were most often observed using the trail during the summer (32%), sunny weather (78%), and moderate temperatures (54%). When promoting trail use among adults, natural elements should be considered.

A Dangerous Step Backwards: The Implications Of Conditional Permanent Resident Status For Sponsored Immigrant Women In Abusive Relationships, Pam Hrick Jan 2012

A Dangerous Step Backwards: The Implications Of Conditional Permanent Resident Status For Sponsored Immigrant Women In Abusive Relationships, Pam Hrick

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Canadian jurists and policy makers have recognized that domestic violence is pervasive across economic, social, and cultural classes in Canada. Through the development of jurisprudence, such as in Lavallee, and reform to the criminal law, such as the institution of a prohibition on spousal rape, they have also acknowledged the ways in which some of the laws of this country have failed to protect or offer legal recourse to women who are in relationships of violence. This paper argues that the federal government’s recent proposal to create a conditional permanent resident status for certain sponsored immigrants has the potential to …

A Queer Critique On The Polygamy Debate In Canada: Law, Culture, And Diversity, Erin Fowler

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

On November 22, 2010, after years of growing concern and controversy, the Supreme Court of British Columbia opened the debate on the constitutional validity of the Criminal Code prohibition against polygamy. The reference case, arising out the failed prosecution of two prominent members of the Fundamentalist Mormon sect in Bountiful, British Columbia, has sparked a heated debate between academics, experts, and legal authorities on whether the prohibition should be struck down due to constitutional infringement or upheld because of the belief that polygamy is associated with gender inequality and the exploitation of women and children. Despite the large number of …

Copyright Misuse: Protecting Copyright In Canada From Overreach And Abuse, Martin Twigg

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Faced with a rapidly evolving technological landscape—one in which near-perfect copies of digital content can be created and disseminated with minimal cost and unprecedented ease—copyright owners have sought to exercise greater control over expressive works. In many cases, they have undertaken this task by harnessing the very same technological forces that threaten to disrupt their traditional business models: monitoring online activity and responding to potentially infringing uses with thousands of cease- and-desist letters; licensing rather than selling digital works; or locking down content with technological access and control measures. These attempts at enhanced protection merit concern because their effectiveness is, …

Risky Business: A Review Of Dual Class Share Structures In Canada And A Proposal For Reform, Daniel Cipollone

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The publicly traded corporation has long been a source of legal debate and controversy. In the 21st century, however, a combination of highly publicized corporate scandals and financial improprieties has centered the debate surrounding publicly traded companies on the topic of corporate governance. Corporate governance refers to the framework by which business corporations are managed and controlled, and each corporation has its own unique internal characteristics and organization that impact the way it is governed. One such aspect is a corporation’s equity ownership structure that sets out the types of shares to be issued to the public, and the rights, …

Spreadsheet Activities With Conditional Progression And Automatically Generated Feedback And Grades, Thomas C. Juster Jan 2012

Spreadsheet Activities With Conditional Progression And Automatically Generated Feedback And Grades, Thomas C. Juster

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Spreadsheet activities following the Spreadsheets Across the Curriculum (SSAC) model have been modified using VBA programming to automatically generate feedback, calculate grades, and ensure that students complete them in a linear fashion. Feedback is based not only on the value of cells, but also on the formulas used to compute the values. These changes greatly ease the burden of grading on instructors, and help students more quickly master tasks and concepts by providing immediate and directed feedback to their answers. Students performed significantly better on the new spreadsheet activities compared to traditional SSAC versions, with 87% achieving perfect scores of …

While there may be some glimmers of hope about a turnaround to the U.S. economy, such as decreasing unemployment, Virginia CPAs aren't betting on a huge recovery in the next year.

The second annual VSCPA Economic Outlook Survey reveals Virginia CPAs are more pessimistic about the United States and Virginia economies than they were last year, but they are actually more optimistic about Virginia's economy compared to the United States as a whole. Likewise, VSCPA members continue to feel good about the economic outlook in Virginia relative to neighboring states.

Variants In The Stories Of The First Vision Of Joseph Smith And The Apostle Paul, John A. Tvedtnes Jan 2012

Variants In The Stories Of The First Vision Of Joseph Smith And The Apostle Paul, John A. Tvedtnes

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Some critics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints have noted that the different accounts of Joseph Smith’s first vision, though written by the prophet himself, vary in some details. They see this as evidence that the event did not take place and was merely invented to establish divine authority for his work. They fail to realize that the versions of Paul’s vision on the road to Damascus, in which the risen Christ appeared to him, also differ from one another. Indeed, they vary more than Joseph Smith’s accounts of his experience. This article examines those variants.

Revisiting The Forgotten Voices Of Weeping In Moses 7: A Comparison With Ancient Texts, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Jacob Rennaker, David J. Larsen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The LDS Book of Moses is remarkable in its depiction of the suffering of the wicked at the time of the Flood. According to this text, there are three parties directly involved in the weep ing: God (Moses 7:28; cf. v. 29), the heavens (Moses 7:28, 37), and Enoch (Moses 7:41, 49). In addition, a fourth party, the earth, mourns—though does not weep—for her children (Moses 7:48–49). The passages that speak of the weeping God and the mourning earth have received the greatest share of attention by scholars. The purpose of this article is to round out the previous discussion …

The Signifying Power Of Pearl, Jane Beal Jan 2012

The Signifying Power Of Pearl, Jane Beal

Quidditas

The spiritual language, Ovidian love stories, and use of liturgical time in Pearl all invite allegorical interpretations of the poem. While there is clearly a literal, elegiac sense to the poem, there are also allegorical meanings. This makes perfect sense in light of the tradition of four-fold scriptural and literary interpretation in the Middle Ages, which the Pearl-Poet clearly used to understand biblical parables and compose his poetic masterpiece. The poet’s use of metaphoric language, memory of the legends of Orpheus and Eurydice and Pygmalion and Galatea, and astute interweaving of parables from the church liturgy alongside invocations of the …

Finding The Center Of Gospel-Centered Therapy, Richard N. Williams Jan 2012

Finding The Center Of Gospel-Centered Therapy, Richard N. Williams

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

In his thoughtful paper, Dr. Robert Gleave (2012) explores what it might mean for one to claim that any therapy is gospel centered. He concludes that the idea of a gospel-centered therapy is in some sense at odds with the spirit of the restored gospel because it would slip into a prescriptive form, laying our principles that would necessarily apply across all people and circumstance, and therefore constituting a sort of grand theory. In response to Dr. Gleave's description, however, the present paper suggests that a genuinely gospel-centered theory (or a therapy derived from it) will not necessarily devolve into …
