Cyber Deterrence, Eric Talbot Jensen
Cyber Deterrence, Eric Talbot Jensen
Faculty Scholarship
Cyber operations by both state actors and non-state actors are increasing in frequency and severity. As nations struggle to defend their networks and infrastructure, their ability to apply the principles of deterrence to cyber activities correspondingly increases in importance. Cyber deterrence offers much more flexibility and increased options from traditional deterrence methodologies developed in the Cold War’s nuclear age. In addition to traditional retaliation, cyber deterrence includes options such as taking legal action; and making networks invisible, resilient, and interdependent. It also presents new ways to view and apply accepted methodologies such as invulnerability. As the U.S. continues to develop …

How Exclusive Is The Exclusive Economic Zone : Contemporary Analysis Of The United Nations Convention On The Law Of The Sea 1982, Oscar Garrido-Lecca Hoyle
World Maritime University Dissertations
International agreements as maritime international laws are the main tool for the sustainable development of the protection and employment of the oceans and seas. Dealing with maritime issues that arise every day, requires a highly focused analysis and establishment of principles and rules to prevent these problems. Globalization provides the opportunity to carry out business around the world and its development has created transnational companies. Technological advances have allowed extended opportunities to explore and exploit the natural resources of the seas, with the resulting risk of these resources becoming extinct if such activities are not controlled. In this scenario, the …
Using Metaphors As A Tool For Creative Strategic Sense-Making, Tomaž Kolar
Using Metaphors As A Tool For Creative Strategic Sense-Making, Tomaž Kolar
Economic and Business Review
This paper investigates the use of metaphor as a valuable tool in encountering contemporary challenges in marketing strategy development. A review of the literature indicates how traditional approaches pay insufficient attention to the fact that marketing strategy development rests largely on the processes of intuitive and symbolic thinking. The first part of the paper establishes creative strategic thinking, which includes these processes as a key imperative in marketing strategy development. To show how metaphors can serve as a tool in encountering some of the challenges identified the second part examines the functions of metaphors. The final part of the paper …
Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Socio-Economic Impacts, Social Inclusion, And Science-Policy Interphase: The Case Of Rice Biotechnology In The Philippines, Antonio P. Contreras
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The paper argues that the development of biotechnology policies in the Philippines vis-à-vis rice is enabled by structures and processes that are friendly to the furtherance of social inclusion and equity goals. This occurs in the context of attaining rice self-sufficiency amidst a globalized system and is clearly expressed in the relative density of concepts and provisions related to participation, inclusivity, and transparency in all the relevant policy instruments. However, spaces that are opened are vulnerable to a political system that has deep-seated structural flaws and a science community whose financial support from the state is limited and at the …

Oef/Oif Veterans With And Without Ptsd : Levels Of Relationship Distress, Social Support, Combat Experience, And Deployment, Jeanne-Marie E. Mailloux
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
As Veterans have returned home from the OEF/OIF wars they have faced many struggles with reintegration. Studies of Veterans returning home have found rates of PTSD as high as 18 % (Hoge et al., 2004; Hoge, Terhakopian, Castro, Messer, and Engel, 2007). The symptomatology of PTSD has historically complicated Veterans primary relationships as well other interpersonal relationships and this study seeks to look at the relationship between PTSD and interpersonal distress in a sample of Veterans returning from the OEF/OIF wars. The author conducted secondary analysis of data from a survey taken by a sample of Connecticut Veterans (n = …

Women In Combat : Narratives Of Nurses In World War Ii, Korea And The Vietnam War, Kathryn J. Hall
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored what could be learned from the narratives of female military nurses in World War II, Korea and the Vietnam War. There is very little literature regarding the experiences of female military nurses and scarcer data about women military nurses performing their roles in combat arenas. The sample was comprised of twelve female military nurses who volunteered for their military service during World War II, Korea and/or the Vietnam War. The sample was a well-educated group of nurses who achieved officer rankings while serving and, though the vast majority of the nurses were unspecified as to race, …

Constraints To The Growth Of Native American Gaming, James A. Davis, Samuel M. Otterstrom
Constraints To The Growth Of Native American Gaming, James A. Davis, Samuel M. Otterstrom
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Since the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was passed in 1988, high-stakes bingo halls and casino operations have spread to reservations across the country and generated millions of dollars in revenues for their respective tribes. While some tribes have been able to exploit their sovereign status and establish high-stakes bingo parlors and casinos on reservations across the country, this study describes how external and internal constraints limit the adoption of gaming ventures by other tribes. Constraints include the location of the reservations, increasing competition, disagreements among tribal members, and opposition from the private and public sectors.
The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian
The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Hester and Killian stress that principled leadership does not necessarily require discarding past practices; rather, they emphasize the importance of using what is good about the past, eliminating self-interest, and injecting passion into contemporary, valuesbased leadership. Passion, as used by the authors in this sense, refers to neither rage nor anger; rather, it is an excitement and enthusiasm that comes from leading with vision, integrity, and respect for others. Subsequently, when such passion is coupled with moral purpose, the idea of serving others, and building and sustaining relationships, the organization will inevitably experience positive growth — one person at a …

Transculturation And Hybridization In New World Baroque Art: A Study Of A New World Identity As Defined By History And Art., Pedro Flores
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze New World Baroque art as a medium of syncretism allowing the reconciliation and fusion of discrepant cultures. This study will explore the region of New Spain as defined by the Baroque period by analyzing Mexico as a place whose identity was defined by the transcultural and hybrid components of the Baroque and as a place where a New World Baroque aesthetic first started to appear. Transculturation and hybridization will be analyzed historically and aesthetically as factors for the creation of a New World Identity. The term New World Baroque will be used …
The Failures Of Intelligence Reform, Amber Ciemniewski
The Failures Of Intelligence Reform, Amber Ciemniewski
Honors Theses
Intelligence reform is the legislation implemented by the federal government that's purpose is to improve the effectiveness and success of the intelligence community. It would seem evident that intelligence reform has failed, but the more important questions lie in where it has failed and how to fix it. In this thesis, it will be argued that reform attempts have failed by focusing on surface problems rather than addressing their sources. Future reforms should focus on the relationship dynamic between the intelligence community and the policymakers it serves. There has been extensive literature published on the problems in the intelligence community …
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the research was to develop best practices for image signal processing method for InSAS systems for bathymetric height determination. Improvements over existing techniques comes from the fusion of Chirp-Scaling a phase preserving beamforming techniques to form a SAS image, an interferometric Vernier method to unwrap the phase; and confirming the direction of arrival with the MUltiple SIgnal Channel (MUSIC) estimation technique. The fusion of Chirp-Scaling, Vernier, and MUSIC lead to the stability in the bathymetric height measurement, and improvements in resolution. This method is computationally faster, and used less memory then existing techniques.

The Industrial Canal and Lower Ninth Ward were selected as the subjects of this case study because the canal has existed on the perimeter of the neighborhood for nearly one century, isolating Lower Ninth Ward residents …
Gaining Relevance In The Face Of Obsolescence: The Uss Texas – A Battleship In The Second World War, Kali Martin
Gaining Relevance In The Face Of Obsolescence: The Uss Texas – A Battleship In The Second World War, Kali Martin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Despite the vast material that has been written about the Second World War, most literature mentions battleships in passing, giving little attention to a role that battleships filled- that of naval gunfire support for amphibious landings. The literature regarding the Navy’s older, obsolescent battleships such as the Texas is scarce. Using primary sources regarding the Texas and the evolution of naval gunfire doctrine from the pre-war and wartime periods, this study looks at the involvement of the Texas in the Second World War and how the Navy employed its oldest battleships. The amphibious landings of the war provided a …
Firing Point: Patrol Torpedo Boats During World War Ii, Joshua J. Schick
Firing Point: Patrol Torpedo Boats During World War Ii, Joshua J. Schick
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
At the beginning of American involvement in the Second World War the United States Navy developed a new class of vessel that had a tremendous impact during World War II. This vessel was the Patrol Torpedo boat. Originally designed to conduct torpedo attacks on enemy surface vessels, the PT boat successfully adapted multiple roles in addition to being a torpedo attack craft. The versatility of the Patrol Torpedo boat during World War II serving in these various roles and as an element of the US Navy has not been recognized by recent scholarship. Using primary sources from the National Archives …
Bloodsport And The Michael Vick Dogfighting Case: A Critical Cultural Analysis, Wil Massey
Bloodsport And The Michael Vick Dogfighting Case: A Critical Cultural Analysis, Wil Massey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
After law enforcement officials in Virginia found evidence of a dogfighting operation, the owner, National Football League star Michael Vick, became one of the most vilified figures in America for supporting a bloodsport that inflicts debilitating bodily harm on dogs. This thesis examines that case in light of the long human history of breeding fighting dogs for war and competitive entertainment. A content analysis was performed on a sample of news reports and opinion pieces that were published in three media outlets. Reactions to the Vick case illuminated strong popular opposition to dogfighting. Findings explore how strong anti-dogfighting views appeared …

Commentary: The Business Of Warfare: Winning Hearts And Minds, Susannah Marie Gingerich-Larson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Assuming there are business ethics in warfare appears to represent the ultimate irony. There is no doubt that certain business profit from the exploits of war. But when the objectives are reconfigured with the objectives embracing, this is the time when ethical leadership is most in demand.
Employing The Seven Army Values To Win Hearts And Minds, Jonn Kusch
Employing The Seven Army Values To Win Hearts And Minds, Jonn Kusch
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
When the objectives of warfare focus not only on seeking out the enemy, but by garnering grass-roots support by the local citizenry through personal interaction, this ―winning hearts and minds‖ strategy commands a culturally sensitive and well defined principled leadership ─ a model which could be used by the business community. In this article, Lieutenant Jonn Kusch provides a rare look into the seemingly insurmountable challenges in Afghanistan and identifies certain values employed by his battalion in fulfilling their charges.
Design And Characterization Of Optical Metamaterials Using Tunable Polarimetric Scatterometry, Jason C. Vap
Design And Characterization Of Optical Metamaterials Using Tunable Polarimetric Scatterometry, Jason C. Vap
Theses and Dissertations
Optical metamaterials are a class of engineered materials with a wide range of material properties and an equally wide range of anticipated applications. This research targets optical metamaterials in two ways. First, the dimensional constraints necessary to bring effective medium theory (EMT) into agreement with the already well-established transfer matrix method (TMM) modeling for a periodic, stratified (metal-dielectric) near-zero permittivity structure were determined. This provided a path to leverage the use of EMT in the design of near-zero permittivity structures and accurately predict its post-fabrication behavior. Second, the first tunable infrared (IR) Mueller matrix polarimeter-scatterometer was developed to capture the …
Constrains On Freedom Of Expression In Turkey: The Effects Of Article 301, Armine Sargsyan
Constrains On Freedom Of Expression In Turkey: The Effects Of Article 301, Armine Sargsyan
Master's Theses
Concerns over human rights violations in Turkey by the European Union (EU) have hindered the Republic of Turkey’s accession to the EU. Freedom of expression has been denied through a number of laws since the creation of the Republic in 1923. This thesis presents how and why speech has been constrained in Turkey, and it provides an argument that Ottoman history has a direct impact on the country’s politics today. It also examines the implications of legislation that has been applied to silence individuals addressing controversial issues in public. In particular, Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code has been …
