Dreams From The Podium, James Patrick Walsh Jan 2012

Dreams From The Podium, James Patrick Walsh

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This article tells a story about teaching as an act of love, about an instructor who discovered theater as a teaching tool and combined it with working class values and rituals in order to remake the culture of higher education in a classroom of adult learners. The story speaks to the intersection of the arts, Jesuit values of higher education and the person/background of the teacher at just the right time. The story is one of humility.

(2012) "I Must Change My Life": A Review Of Mathew Lipman’S A Life Teaching Thinking, David K. Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

Born in 1923 and recently deceased after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease, Matthew Lipman wrote this brief but detailed autobiography just before his illness made it impossible to write any more. It begins with memories of earliest childhood and his preoccupation with the possibility of being able to fly, moves through the years in which his family struggled with the effects of the Great Depression, through his service in the military during World War II, his discovery of the joy and beauty of philosophy, his quick academic rise at Columbia University, his sojourn in Paris, and his early and …

Chaos, Fragility, And Change: Revisiting Laura Wingfield, Lydia M. Weiso Jan 2012

Chaos, Fragility, And Change: Revisiting Laura Wingfield, Lydia M. Weiso

Honors Theses

The Glass menagerie (1944) by American playwright Tennessee Williams is a memory play focused on the Wingfield family of St. Louis. The play develops themes of family dysfunction, failed expectations, and various attempts to escape reality. This project focuses on the character of Laura Wingfield, an introverted, emotionally fragile character who is almost always interpreted as helpless and tragic. However, though a close critical analysis of Laura's interactions with other characters and with key props such as her glass collection, the family's Victrola and candelabra, this project shows that Laura need not be viewed as tragically as critics typically have …

A Language Without Words: Music As An Agent Of Identity In Brian Friel's Dancing At Lughnasa, Catherine Tetz Jan 2012

A Language Without Words: Music As An Agent Of Identity In Brian Friel's Dancing At Lughnasa, Catherine Tetz

Honors Theses

Music has consistently played a major role in the work of Irish playwright Brian Friel and provides a steady backdrop for Dancing at Lughnasa (1990), a memory play about a family in Northern Ireland struggling to stay together in the August of 1936. This paper examines the function of music within the context of the play to see how it heightens the themes of identity, otherness, and memory. It also examines the history and various genres of selected works from the play to further investigate how Friel's selection of particular songs reflects the emotional states and ideologies of the characters.

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

This team reviewed the literature on community indicators, worked with the Portland team to determine qualities of good indicator systems, and then developed an extensive field interview and observation instrument. This instrument was then used to assess a variety of community attributes in case study sites. Our research expanded on the work of the case studies in community revitalization work. They considered the fiscal issues facing local governments and discuss how that may impact their current and future efforts to revitalize their community. Another element will measure the community’s level of public participation and communication. This will include ranking the …

Hidden Histories And Multiple Meanings: The Richard Dennett Collection At The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter., Sara Craig Ayres

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Ethnographic collections in western museums such as the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) carry many meanings, but by definition, they represent an intercultural encounter. This history of this encounter is often lost, overlooked, or obscured, and yet it has bearing on how the objects in the collection have been interpreted and understood. This thesis uncovers the hidden history of one particular collection in the RAMM and examines the multiple meanings that have been attributed to the objects in the collection over time. The Richard Dennett Collection was made in Africa in the years when European powers began to colonise the …

STEFAN LUDWIK ALOSZKO AUSCHWITZ: ART, COMMEMORATION AND MEMORIALISATION: FROM 1940 TO THE PRESENT ABSTRACT This thesis explores chronologically the art, commemoration and memorialisation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz, from their establishment in 1940 to the present day. Following a review of the literature in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 examines the production of works of art by the inmates of the camp. That art should have been produced at all in Auschwitz may conflict with our expectations, given the conditions of life within the camp. Nevertheless, art was as necessary in Auschwitz as it is elsewhere. The …
