The Subversion Of Abstract Space In U2’S Rhizomatic 1990s, Anthony Cristofani Jan 2012

The Subversion Of Abstract Space In U2’S Rhizomatic 1990s, Anthony Cristofani

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre analyzes the “geometric—neutral, empty, blank—mental space” that is posited in order to avoid the unpleasant, contradictory nature of social space, which it displaces. Abstract space is “also the locus of all the agitations and disputations of mimesis”, and the space is where books are canonized, genres are fixed, and university departments are calcified, a process that not only hierarchizes texts but fixes their context. Even avant-garde and purportedly subversive art and criticism is easily subsumed in the abstract space required for the functioning of capitalism. As such, I look to a popular …

Penguin Players, Morgan Latimer Jan 2012

Penguin Players, Morgan Latimer

Honors Capstones

The Penguin Project is a group that originated in Peoria, Illinois six years ago. The program offers children, ages 10 to 22, with various disabilities the opportunity to perform in a musical. These children, referred to as the artists, are each paired with a peer mentor to assist them as they rehearse and perform the musical on stage. This program has many benefits, not only for the artists, but for everyone involved. It creates the opportunity for the artists to develop important social skills, be supported and encouraged by their peers, and often discover hidden talents. It also provides the …

The Theatrical Lieu De Culture Within Molière’S Theater, Nina Ekstein Jan 2012

The Theatrical Lieu De Culture Within Molière’S Theater, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Molière’s theater is itself, by definition, a lieu de culture. The performance of one of his plays transforms the space in which it occurs into a lieu de culture by virtue of the presence of two crucial features. First, the performance belongs to a cultural domain, in this case specifically the theater. By ‘culture’ I mean simply that which is tied to the arts, letters, manners, and scholarly pursuits. Second there must be an audience present for that performance. The same basic situation obviously holds true for any playwright whose plays are performed. What makes Molière interesting is the …

La Pratique Ironique De L’Appel À L’Autorité Dans Les Péritextes Du Théâtre De Corneille, Nina Ekstein Jan 2012

La Pratique Ironique De L’Appel À L’Autorité Dans Les Péritextes Du Théâtre De Corneille, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann Jan 2012

Aerodynamics And Control Of A Deployable Wing Uav For Autonomous Flight, Michael Thamann

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

UAV development and usage has increased dramatically in the last 15 years. In this time frame the potential has been realized for deployable UAVs to the extent that a new class of UAV was defined for these systems. Inflatable wing UAVs provide a unique solution for deployable UAVs because they are highly packable (some collapsing to 5-10% of their deployed volume) and have the potential for the incorporation of wing shaping. In this thesis, aerodynamic coefficients and aileron effectiveness were derived from the equations of motion of aircraft as necessary parameters for autonomous flight. A wind tunnel experiment was performed …

Applying Specific Arts Activities To Improve The Quality Of Life For Individuals With Alzheimer’S Disease And Dementia, Ann Christianson Tietyen

Theses and Dissertations--Art and Visual Studies

This study examined the effectiveness of a combination of seven different visual art activities, hat decoration, collage, embossing, painting, ceramics, photography, and printmaking, on quality of life for eight veterans with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The eight veterans were selected from the population of residents at the Thomson‐ Hood Veterans facility in Wilmore, Kentucky. These veterans were administered the seven art activities mentioned above, which ranged from less difficult to increasing difficulty. Three standard self‐reporting instruments, the Quality of Life‐AD, the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Scale, and the Smiley‐Face Mood Assessment, as well as systematic observation and surveys were used to explore …

Singapore’S Chinatown: Nation Building And Heritage Tourism In A Multiracial City, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong Jan 2012

Singapore’S Chinatown: Nation Building And Heritage Tourism In A Multiracial City, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on the pivotal role played by the state in refashioning the Chinatown landscape as part of both nation-building and heritage tourism projects, and the ensuing cultural politics. After a brief history of the creation of Singapore’s Chinatown, the paper discusses, first, Chinatown’s place in Singapore’s post-independence nation-building project and, second, the reconfiguration of the Chinatown landscape as a tourism asset. The final section reflects on the changing politics of place as Chinatown gains legitimacy in state discourses on heritage, tourism and multiculturalism, as well as in the popular imagination as an ethnic precinct par excellence.

The Influence Of Nietzsche And Schopenhauer On Hermann Hesse, Kathryn Punsly Jan 2012

The Influence Of Nietzsche And Schopenhauer On Hermann Hesse, Kathryn Punsly

CMC Senior Theses

In my first chapter, I will discuss the mark of Cain at greater length and introduce the idea of daemon. In the second chapter, I will discuss how it functions as part of Nietzschean active nihilism. Finally, in the third chapter, I will explore the problem of somberness and the problem of fanaticism, and see how Hesse tries to resolve these two problems.

Spectacular Shadows: Djuna Barnes's Styles Of Estrangement In Nightwood, Erica Nicole Bellman Jan 2012

Spectacular Shadows: Djuna Barnes's Styles Of Estrangement In Nightwood, Erica Nicole Bellman

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines Djuna Barnes's Modernist masterpiece, Nightwood, by exploring the author's particular styles of writing. As an ironist, a master of spectacle, and a visual artist, Barnes's distinct stylistic roles allow the writer to construct a strange fictional world that transcends simple categorization and demands close reading. Through textual analysis, consideration of how Barnes's characterization, and engagement with key critical interpretations lead to the conclusion that Nightwood's primary aim is to present the reader with an image of his or her own individual estrangement.

Federal Regulation Of Emerging Technologies And Its Implications For Transhumanist Applications Of Nbic Technologies, David A. Dreshfield Jan 2012

Federal Regulation Of Emerging Technologies And Its Implications For Transhumanist Applications Of Nbic Technologies, David A. Dreshfield

CMC Senior Theses

This paper attempts to chart potential courses for federal regulation of emerging technologies in the United States, and its near-future implications for the development and proliferation of NBIC technologies in a transhumanist context. Drawing on significant regulatory actions by the FDA and FCC throughout the twentieth century, relevant historical regulatory trends are identified and extrapolated broadly across the next two to three decades. The importance of the NBIC paradigm is discussed in detail, alongside several examples of both current and potential NBIC technologies with transhumanist applications. It ultimately concludes that, in spite of recent congressional dysfunctions and lack of political …

Catharine Trotter And The Claims Of Conscience, Joanne E. Myers Jan 2012

Catharine Trotter And The Claims Of Conscience, Joanne E. Myers

English Faculty Publications

Although Catherine Trotter, later Cockburn, has begun to receive increased critical attention, the role of religious themes in her writing remains largely unexplored. A key tendency in critical accounts, in fact, has been to ally her with the secular contractarian philosophy of John Locke, whom she defended in print. Biographical evidence suggests, however, that Trotter was not unconcerned with religious questions; raised an Anglican, she converted to Catholicism in her youth and returned to the Church of England in her early thirties. Her later philosophical works remain preoccupied with theological issues, notably voluntarism. This article proposes that we can identify …

Privacy And The Right Of Free Expression, John A. Humbach Jan 2012

Privacy And The Right Of Free Expression, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Nobody likes to be talked about but everybody likes to talk. Trying to stop the dissemination of private information is, however, an impingement on free expression and the freedom to observe. A freestanding “right of privacy” that violates these interests is constitutionally permissible only if it can be justified using one of the standard bases for allowing restrictions on First Amendment rights. The three most likely possibilities are that the law in question: (1) can pass strict scrutiny, (2) fall within a recognized “categorical” exception, or (3) places only an “incidental” burden on First Amendment interests. Of these three, only …

Sow What You Reap? Using Predator And Reaper Drones To Carry Out Assassinations Or Targeted Killings Of Suspected Islamic Terrorists, Thomas M. Mcdonnell Jan 2012

Sow What You Reap? Using Predator And Reaper Drones To Carry Out Assassinations Or Targeted Killings Of Suspected Islamic Terrorists, Thomas M. Mcdonnell

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article explores whether targeted killing of suspected Islamist terrorists comports with international law generally, whether any special rules apply in so-called “failed states,” and whether deploying attack drones poses special risks for the civilian population, for humanitarian and human rights law, and for the struggle against terrorism. Part I of this article discusses the Predator Drone and its upgraded version Predator B, the Reaper, and analyzes their technological capabilities and innovations. Part II discusses international humanitarian law and international human rights law as applied to a state’s targeting and killing an individual inside or outside armed conflict or in …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Legal Recourse: Interpreting And Revising Title Vii To Prohibit Workplace Segregation Premised On Religion, Dawinder S. Sidhu Jan 2012

Out Of Sight, Out Of Legal Recourse: Interpreting And Revising Title Vii To Prohibit Workplace Segregation Premised On Religion, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this article is to argue that the federal courts’ prevailing interpretation of Title VII with respect to religious attire in the workplace is inconsistent with the law. I maintain that Title VII prohibits employers from either placing employees in the back or refusing to hire individuals with conspicuous articles of faith due to any actual or perceived social discomfort with the employee’s religion-based appearance. I am persuaded of this for two independent reasons. First, placing an employee out of public view does not constitute a “reasonable accommodation” under Title VII because the statute’s general anti-discrimination provision expressly …

The Bowl Championship Series, Conference Realignment And The Major College Football Oligopoly: Revolution Not Reform, Alfred Dennis Mathewson Jan 2012

The Bowl Championship Series, Conference Realignment And The Major College Football Oligopoly: Revolution Not Reform, Alfred Dennis Mathewson

Faculty Scholarship

The legality of the Bowl Championship Series under the federal antitrust laws has been the subject of much scholarly commentary and Congressional inquiry. The results have been mixed but the majority view seems to be that the BCS passes muster under the Sherman Act. Most of the commentary has examined the application of Section 1 with only passing attention to Section 2. This article makes three points. First, it argues that the focus on the BCS has obscured the attention to a broader set of economic issues relating to the structure of the major college football industry. The Bowl Championship …

Beyond The First Amendment: Shaping The Contours Of Commercial Speech In Video Games, Virtual Worlds, And Social Media, Jon M. Garon Jan 2012

Beyond The First Amendment: Shaping The Contours Of Commercial Speech In Video Games, Virtual Worlds, And Social Media, Jon M. Garon

Utah Law Review

By using the intersection of existing trade law with the traditional publicity rights doctrine, the developing law of cyberspace can be applied to digital interactive media in predictable ways designed to protect against consumer fraud and protect the legitimate commercial interests of endorsers without impinging on the First Amendment. The system requires the more granular analysis that courts and regulators have applied in traditional media for decades. By using the core principles of existing law, the concerns about technological innovation diminish and continued advancement of free speech can be promoted. The FTC and FCC provide an established road map to …

Federal Jurisdiction In Sports Labor Disputes, Michael H. Leroy Jan 2012

Federal Jurisdiction In Sports Labor Disputes, Michael H. Leroy

Utah Law Review

The appropriate boundaries of federal jurisdiction are currently debated regarding hot-button issues such as military tribunals for enemy combatants, abortion, and conservative social goals. Compared to these controversies, the role of federal courts in sports labor disputes is unlikely to arouse congressional alarm. Indeed, one can hardly imagine a constituency beyond wealthy owners of professional sports teams who would seek legislation to strip federal jurisdiction in these antitrust actions. Nonetheless, this study makes a strong case that federal courts exceeded their jurisdiction in sports labor disputes. Judges who have crossed this line had understandable motivations. They believed antitrust law was …

[Introduction To] Executive Power In Theory And Practice, Hugh Liebert, Gary L. Mcdowell, Terry L. Price Jan 2012

[Introduction To] Executive Power In Theory And Practice, Hugh Liebert, Gary L. Mcdowell, Terry L. Price

Bookshelf

Since September 11, 2001, long-standing debates over the nature and proper extent of executive power have assumed a fresh urgency. What is executive power? When did it first emerge, and why? And what is the role of the executive within the American regime? In this book, eleven leading scholars of American politics and political theory address these and related questions, in essays on topics ranging from Aristotle and the Roman Republic to the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

The Road To Modern India Through World War Ii, The Great Partition, And The Green Revolution, Lydia Dumais Jan 2012

The Road To Modern India Through World War Ii, The Great Partition, And The Green Revolution, Lydia Dumais

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores some of the administrative failings of the British Raj at the twilight of its reign, beginning at the close of World War II with the rising tide of Indian nationalism. After a century of British rule, the call for Indian independence was growing deafening. A discourse had began in India: What defined India, as a people and as a nation? In the struggle for independence from the British the question of national identity became intertwined with religious identity, causing a deep divide between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. The road towards independence became a …

Beyond Decorative? Painted Images Of The Woman As Part Of The Cult Of Domesticity, Eugenie Fortier Jan 2012

Beyond Decorative? Painted Images Of The Woman As Part Of The Cult Of Domesticity, Eugenie Fortier

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores images of the middle- to upper-class woman in her domestic realm from the mid-nineteenth century to the turn of the twentieth century, extending the topics observed via Edward Hopper's paintings to the middle of the twentieth century. Observed through Impressionist works, which attempted to show everyday life, the validity of these images becomes questionable; since they were primarily painted by male artists, it is possible that the models were depicted as particularly exemplary of the female stereotype. However, as the artists strived to capture reality, they seem to simultaenously capture an emotional state of ennui that is …

One Time, One Place? Richard Wright And Eudora Welty's Shared Visual Politics In The Depression Era, Mallory Blasingame Jan 2012

One Time, One Place? Richard Wright And Eudora Welty's Shared Visual Politics In The Depression Era, Mallory Blasingame

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis questions the absence of critical comparative studies of Mississippi-born authors Richard Wright and Eudora Welty. It argues that, though the authors' writing has traditionally been understood as residing on opposite sides of the political spectrum, they share a political vision of the rural South and urban North in the Depression era that is established in their documentary works—Wright's 12 Million Black Voices (1941) and Welty's One Time, One Place (1971)—and extends into such fictional works as Wright's "Big Boy Leaves Home" (1936) and Native Son (1941) and Welty's "Moon Lake" (1949) and "Flowers for Marjorie" (1941). In chapter …
