Close Encounters, Martin Anthony Arnold Jan 2012

Close Encounters, Martin Anthony Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: The expressiveness of the human figure is the syntax and vocabulary that I use to explore the things that make us human. In coming to really know an individual, we not only gain insights into our own psychological make-up, but we may extrapolate our findings to the broader human condition. Although intimately concerned with highlighting the characteristics that make my subjects distinctive, I am equally determined to examine those traits underscoring our commonality, that bind us all into a human family. I look for fresh ways to pull back the curtain of privacy and allow viewers to intrude on …

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson Jan 2012

Masculinity In Comparative Black Literatures, Latoya Renee Jefferson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the ways in which Black men in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora define themselves as gendered beings in their fiction and drama beginning with Richard Wright's publication of Native Son in 1940 to Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter published 1980. Black men created a transnational dialectic concerning their masculinity which involved the creation and criticism of several types of masculinity. In Chapters 1 and 2, I discuss the theoretical and the historical framework for this project. In Chapter 3, I discuss the first type of Black masculinity which was based in opposition to Euro-American stereotypes …

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton Jan 2012

Nothing Less Than An Activist: Marge Baroni, Catholicism, And The Natchez, Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Eva Elizabeth Walton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a religious and social history of the life of Natchez, Mississippi Catholic activist Marjorie R. Baroni (1924-1986). The study examines Baroni's Catholic faith-driven activism as a counter-narrative to the dominant Protestant narratives of religious motivations in the greater civil rights movement. In analyzing Baroni's story as a lived theological drama, I offer Baroni as a vessel for studying often overlooked Catholic influences in the movement: (1) The activist Catholic faith promoted by Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement (2) The effects of the more inclusive decrees of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) on the Catholic Church …

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Advertising Projects

Radio Talking Book Service, a non-profit organization that assists the visually impaired by providing a free radio reading service, came to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a challenge: increase brand and service awareness throughout Nebraska.

We began by conducting both secondary and primary research, developing key insights and examining all possible target audiences. We investigated the day-to-day life of the visually impaired, learning that many who have experienced vision loss suffer from decreasing independence and increasing feelings of loneliness. Our primary research revealed that these individuals turn first to eye care professionals, resource organizations for the visually impaired and residential …

The Bbc And The Shaping Of British Identity From 1922 To 1945, Mallory Huard Jan 2012

The Bbc And The Shaping Of British Identity From 1922 To 1945, Mallory Huard

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

There are few institutions in British history that have had such a massive role in shaping the daily lives of British citizens as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Although the BBC is only about eighty years old, an infant compared to an institution like the British monarchy, its contributions to national identity are practically unparalleled in the twentieth century. The scope of the Corporation in terms of its influence on British life is hard to imagine in a United States with multiple competing and politically-aimed networks. Robin Aitkin, a former BBC reporter and journalist says, “For many it is an …

Contemporary Post-Postmodernism Transfiguring The Imperfect Human Body, Claire Jones Jan 2012

Contemporary Post-Postmodernism Transfiguring The Imperfect Human Body, Claire Jones

Theses & ETDs

I argue that contemporary artists and their audiences focus on the unidealized, human body to move beyond the conceptual seriousness and vigorous deconstructing of the postmodern period into a constructivist cultural phenomenon identified as post-postmodernism. I have classified the featured artists as transfiguration artists: those who change the Western canon so as to glorify or exalt marginalized body types such as the aged, pregnant, adolescent, and abject; artists who personally change in outward form or appearance to espouse "other"-ed identities; and, artists who wish to transform global viewpoints by incorporating the audience and thereby encouraging constructivist collaborative elaboration, as influenced …

Die Zauberflöte: A European Singspiel, Zachary Bryant Jan 2012

Die Zauberflöte: A European Singspiel, Zachary Bryant

Theses and Dissertations

Through modern-day globalization, the cultures of the world are shared on a daily basis and are integrated into the lives of nearly every person. This reality seems to go unnoticed by most, but the fact remains that many individuals and their societies have formed a cultural identity from the combination of many foreign influences. Such a multicultural identity can be seen particularly in music. Composers, artists, and performers alike frequently seek to incorporate separate elements of style in their own identity. One of the earliest examples of this tradition is the German Singspiel. Through the synthesis of foreign and native …

Variations On A Sonnet: A Play And Accompanying Analysis, Hannah Carey Jan 2012

Variations On A Sonnet: A Play And Accompanying Analysis, Hannah Carey

Theses and Dissertations

When I first began considering writing a play based on Shakespeare's sonnets, I toyed with the idea of dramatizing the poet's life as it is revealed in the sonnets. I had read the sonnets and imagined that it would not be terribly difficult to set some of them to prose scenes in which the amorphous jealousy, obsession, and longing found in the sonnets would blossom into clear conflicts and complex characters--the protagonist being Shakespeare himself, of course. The play would give a biographical portrait of Shakespeare and his life, without being preachy or boring. However, the more I studied the …

A Narrative In One Scene, Aliyah C. Anglin Jan 2012

A Narrative In One Scene, Aliyah C. Anglin

Theses and Dissertations

Filmmakers are visual storytellers, thus it is important to understand basic film theory as well as the elements of a narrative, such as voice, look, and feel. It is just as important for filmmakers to understand how film theory and the elements of a narrative work together to effectively convey stories to the people viewing the film. In this thesis, I researched basic film theory and analyzed three personally influential movies and directors including Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936), Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible (2012), and Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai (1954). I chose one technique from each of the …

Bob Dylan’S Lawyers, A Dark Day In Luzerne County, And Learning To Take Legal Ethics Seriously, Randy Lee Jan 2012

Bob Dylan’S Lawyers, A Dark Day In Luzerne County, And Learning To Take Legal Ethics Seriously, Randy Lee

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article examines the life of Bob Dylan and how his views can be used to improve legal ethics. Bob Dylan's views are applied to the legal ethics issues faced by the juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania’s Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice's call "to get serious" about legal ethics. "If we are, however, to get serious about legal ethics, then we will first have to see if we can “make any sense of it,” “pull it apart,” and see if any of it can fit back together in a meaningful way, in other words, do the kind …

Par In Parem Imperium Non Habet, Beth Van Schaack Jan 2012

Par In Parem Imperium Non Habet, Beth Van Schaack

The principle of complementarity undergirds the International Criminal Court’s admissibility regime. And yet, in the negotiations leading up to the 2010 Review Conference in Kampala, Uganda, delegates did not fully focus on the potential for the addition of the crime of aggression to destabilize the Court’s complementarity regime. The only guidance from the ASP came in the form of two interpretive Understandings that express a subtle preference that States Parties not incorporate the crime into their domestic codes. If States Parties heed this call - which they should - the Court will inevitably be faced with situations in which there …

Improvisation: Narrative And Character Techniques In Jazz Pedagogy, Nathan Geyer Jan 2012

Improvisation: Narrative And Character Techniques In Jazz Pedagogy, Nathan Geyer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"This paper explores techniques in theatrical improvisation and discovers how they can be applied to jazz improvisation pedagogy. Improvised character and narrative are addressed from a theatrical standpoint and techniques are demonstrated to be easily relatable to jazz. The author proposes some techniques for use by educators of jazz improvisation and gives examples of how to teach simple concepts to ensembles using theatrical methods. It is the intent that these concepts will help develop soloists who perform jazz solos from a storytelling standpoint. The paper favors the use of impersonation rather than imitation of jazz artists, and also reincorporation rather …

Research outputs 2012

Background: This study seeks to extend earlier Australian school drug education research by developing and measuring the effectiveness of a comprehensive, evidence-based, harm reduction focused school drug education program for junior secondary students aged 13 to 15 years. The intervention draws on the recent literature as to the common elements in effective school curriculum. It seeks to incorporate the social influence of parents through home activities. It also emphasises the use of appropriate pedagogy in the delivery of classroom lessons. Methods/Design. A cluster randomised school drug education trial will be conducted with 1746 junior high school students in 21 Victorian …

Knights, Pigeons, And Chapman's All Fools, Charles Edelman Jan 2012

Knights, Pigeons, And Chapman's All Fools, Charles Edelman

Research outputs 2012

Of all the writers providing comedies for Philip Henslowe at the Rose Theatre in 1596 and 1597, none was more successful than George Chapman. Henslowe’s records of box-office takings show that Chapman’s Blind Beggar of Alexandria was the most successful offering of 1596, and Chapman followed that with the biggest hit of 1597, An Humorous Day’s Mirth. No wonder, then, that between May and October of 1598, along with payments to Chapman for the completion of a play begun by Ben Jonson and an unnamed tragedy, Henslowe made a series of payments for a Chapman comedy called The Will of …

New Digital Interactions With John Cage's Variations Iv, V And Vi, Catherine Hope, Stuart James, Lindsay Vickery Jan 2012

New Digital Interactions With John Cage's Variations Iv, V And Vi, Catherine Hope, Stuart James, Lindsay Vickery

Research outputs 2012

To celebrate the centenary of John Cage’s birth in 1912, Western Australian new music ensemble Decibel undertook the realization of the American composer John Cage’s (1912 – 1992) complete Variations I – VIII. The works offer a unique insight into the development of Cage’s approach to composition practice, aleatoric approaches, spatial arrangements and the use of electronics. Entitled the “John Cage Complete Variations Project”, Decibel created a performance of the eight pieces in around an hour. The preparation and reading of the scores that make use of transparent sheets (Variations I, II, III, IV and VI) has been adapted using …

From Autonomous To Performative Control Of Timbral Spatialisation, Stuart James Jan 2012

From Autonomous To Performative Control Of Timbral Spatialisation, Stuart James

Research outputs 2012

Timbral spatialisation is one such process that requires the independent control of potentially thousands of parameters (Torchia, et al., 2003). Current research on controlling timbral spatialisation has focussed either on automated generative systems, or suggested that to design trajectories in software is to write every movement line by line (Normandeau, 2009). This research proposes that Wave Terrain Synthesis may be used as an effective bridging control structure for timbral spatialisation, enabling the performative control of large numbers of parameter sets associated with software. This methodology also allows for compact interactive mapping possibilities for a physical controller, and may also be …

Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone Jan 2012

Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone

Research outputs 2012

Security as part of requirements engineering is now seen as an essential part of systems development in several modern methodologies. Unfortunately, medical systems are one domain where security is seen as an impediment to patient care and not as an essential part of a system. Cloud computing may offer a seamless way to allow medical data to be transferred from patient to medical practitioners, whilst maintaining security requirements. This paper uses a case study to investigate the use of cloud computing in a mobile application for Parkinson Disease. It was found that functionality took precedence over security requirements and standards.
