Blood cancers result in the deaths of over 50,000 patients worldwide annually. While capable of inducing temporary or occasionally complete remissions in patients with favorable cytogenetics, conventional chemotherapy is limited both by its toxicity and lack of specificity, often causing secondary disease years later. For over 50 years, the techniques of transplantation have been developed through the complicated interpretation of biology and countless lives. Today, developments in the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have led to an increasing use of the therapy in patients of all ages. The main deterrent to the use of transplantation today is the divergent …

Exercise can increase skeletal muscle sensitivity to insulin, improve insulin resistance and regulate glucose homeostasis in rat models of type 2 diabetes. However, the potential mechanism remains poorly understood. In this study, we established a male Sprague-Dawley rat model of type 2 diabetes, with insulin resistance and β cell dysfunction, which was induced by a high-fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin to replicate the pathogenesis and metabolic characteristics of type 2 diabetes in humans. We also investigated the possible mechanism by which chronic and acute exercise improves metabolism, and the phosphorylation and expression of components of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and …

Traversing Swanton Road, 10th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Transformation Of Non-Governmental Micro Finance Institutions (Mfis) In Tanzania, Marcelina Mvula Chijoriga Dec 2012

Transformation Of Non-Governmental Micro Finance Institutions (Mfis) In Tanzania, Marcelina Mvula Chijoriga

Business Management Review

Transformation of NGO micro finance institutions (MFIs) is one of the solutions for increasing the supply of financial services to micro and small enterprises and the rural poor. The findings revealed that there are a number of challenges affecting the transformation of MFIs, including the lack of human resource capacity; inadequate technical skills in banking and finance; the lack of demand-driven financial products; limited capital and loanable funds; weak ownership and governance structures; and poor information technology systems including poor loan tracking. The legal and regulatory framework and high donor dependence also affects MFIs ' operations as commercial enterprises as …

Zaidi, Sajid Bashir Soofi, Ali Turab, Didar Alam, Shahida Qureshi, Aisha Khizar Yousafzai, Syed Asad Ali, Imran Ahmed, Sajad Memon, Muneera Rasheed

Woman and Child Health

Background: Stunting results from decreased food intake, poor diet quality, and a high burden of early childhood infections, and contributes to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although food insecurity is an important determinant of child nutrition, including stunting, development of universal measures has been challenging due to cumbersome nutritional questionnaires and concerns about lack of comparability across populations. We investigate the relationship between household food access, one component of food security, and indicators of nutritional status in early childhood across eight country sites.
Methods: We administered a socioeconomic survey to 800 households in research sites in eight countries, including a …

Troilus And Cressida: Shakespeare's Ungenred Promise Play, Dana Knudsen Dec 2012

Troilus And Cressida: Shakespeare's Ungenred Promise Play, Dana Knudsen

Student Works

Troilus and Cressida is a complex play of dualities and contradiction. Because of its confusing nature, many audiences have struggled to make sense of it. Since genre is one of the easiest ways to interpret a play, one of the looming questions about the play is "What genre is Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida?" It has been called a tragedy, "'a comedy of disillusion,' . . . 'a wry-mouthed comedy,' . . . a satire . . . a piece of propaganda . . . a morality . . . and (of course) a Problem play." Both critics and dramatists remain …

Thin Soils And Sacbes: The Soil Resources Of Uci, Yucatan, Mexico, Zachary S. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to use pedological evidence in conjunction with Geographic Information Systems, and soil physical and chemical analyses as means to better understand the agricultural landscape surrounding the ancient Maya city of Uci. Specifically, the query of this thesis is to determine whether there is an association between settlement density and soil resources, and what relationship if any there is between the ancient sacbe of Uci and its surrounding agricultural potential. Stable carbon isotope analysis of the humin fraction of the soil organic matter was conducted on several profiles from karst depressions known as rejolladas near …

The Pre-Application Of Hydrocortisone Cream And Its Effect On Transdermal Drug Delivery By Phonophoresis, Patrick Thomas Webb Dec 2012

The Pre-Application Of Hydrocortisone Cream And Its Effect On Transdermal Drug Delivery By Phonophoresis, Patrick Thomas Webb

Theses and Dissertations

Context: Transdermal delivery of hydrocortisone by phonophoresis is used for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Research shows hydrocortisone and other white or opaque topical preparations transmit ultrasound energy poorly. Effective transmission of ultrasound is important in phonophoresis. Main Outcome measured: Samples of subcutaneous interstitial fluid were collected during and for 20 minutes following phonophoresis treatment. Cortisol concentrations were analyzed by an enzyme linked immune-assay (ELISA) test. Objective: Determine the subcutaneous cortisol concentration after two different phonophoresis treatments using a 2.5% hydrocortisone preparation. Design: Randomized design in which 22 healthy participants were assigned to receive a phonophoresis treatment where: 1) hydrocortisone …

Maximizing The Hyperpolarizability Poorly Determines The Potential, J. Lesnefsky, Greg A. Wiggers, Rolfe G. Petschek Dec 2012

Maximizing The Hyperpolarizability Poorly Determines The Potential, J. Lesnefsky, Greg A. Wiggers, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

The dimensionless zero-frequency electronic first hyperpolarizability 3−1/4βE7/210m3/2(eℏ)−3 of an electron in one dimension was maximized by adjusting the shape of a piecewise linear potential. Careful maximizations converged quickly to 0.708951 with increasing numbers of parameters. The Hessian shows that β is strongly sensitive to only two parameters in the potential: sensitivity to additional parameters decreases rapidly. With more than two parameters, a wide range of potentials and an apparently narrower range of wavefunctions have nearly optimal hyperpolarizability. Modulations of the potential to which the unique maximum is insensitive were characterized. Prospects for concise description of the two important constraints on …

A Corpus-Based Evaluation Of The Common European Framework Vocabulary For French Teaching And Learning, Francoise S. Kusseling Dec 2012

A Corpus-Based Evaluation Of The Common European Framework Vocabulary For French Teaching And Learning, Francoise S. Kusseling

Theses and Dissertations

The CEFR French profiles have been widely used to teach and evaluate language instruction over the past decade. The profiles were specifications of vocabulary that have been largely untested from a corpus-based, empirical perspective. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the CEFR profiles by comparing their content with two sizable contemporary corpora. This study quantified and described the vocabulary overlap and uniqueness across all three of these resources. Four areas of overlap and three areas of uniqueness were analyzed and identified. Slightly over 40% of the lexical content was common to the three resources studied. Additionally, 16.3% was …

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna: A Public Policy Approach To Saving An Iconic Species, Timothy Patrick O'Brien Dec 2012

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna: A Public Policy Approach To Saving An Iconic Species, Timothy Patrick O'Brien

Theses and Dissertations

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is perhaps the most magnificent and most marvelous nomadic wild animal living in the world. It lives in the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the largest of the world’s fin fish and the largest of the 48 other species of tuna (Kuhn, 1996). It is a species that seems to have been designed and sculpted by an artist—sleek, smooth, and beautiful—instead of having been a product of an evolutionary process. Today, the existence and future of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is in question because of the constant overexploitation …

A Building Energy Efficiency Optimization Method By Evaluating The Effective Thermal Zones Occupancy, Anna Laura Pisello, Michael Bobker, Franco Cotana Dec 2012

A Building Energy Efficiency Optimization Method By Evaluating The Effective Thermal Zones Occupancy, Anna Laura Pisello, Michael Bobker, Franco Cotana

Publications and Research

Building energy efficiency is strongly linked to the operations and control systems, together with the integrated performance of passive and active systems. In new high quality buildings in particular, where these two latter aspects have been already implemented at the design stage, users’ perspective, obtained through post-occupancy assessment, has to be considered to reduce whole energy requirement during service life. This research presents an innovative and low-cost methodology to reduce buildings’ energy requirements through post-occupancy assessment and optimization of energy operations using effective users’ attitudes and requirements as feedback. As a meaningful example, the proposed method is applied to a …

Comparing Competitiveness Of Family And Non-Family Smes In Tanzania, Goodluck Charles Dec 2012

Comparing Competitiveness Of Family And Non-Family Smes In Tanzania, Goodluck Charles

Business Management Review

This paper aims at examining competitiveness of family firms in comparison with non-family firms assessing the differences in the strategies applied by the two categories of firms. Using a sample of 341 SMEs, MANOVA was applied to compare competitiveness and the strategies of the firms studied. The findings show that family SMEs are generally more competitive than non-family SMEs in terms of financial indicators. However, in terms of market based-indicators, the difference in competitiveness is insignificant between the two groups of firms. The findings also show that family enterprises have a greater inclination and focus on the longer-term horizon, to …
