Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin Dec 2012

Ecological Development Of A Management Plan For Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus) On St. George Island, Alaska, Michelle L. St. Martin

Agriculture and Horticulture

Management of an herbivore production system requires a working knowledge of the components and processes of the targeted grazing system. Land owners and stakeholders wish to develop a management plan for reindeer on St. George Island, Alaska. The foci of this study were to determine seasonal diet composition (including forage preference); evaluate nutritional content of Angelica lucid, a potential alternative winter forage; estimate lichen biomass; and estimate reindeer abundance, annual production, and sustainable stocking density. Lichens were the preferred reindeer forage throughout the year, however significant seasonal dietary shifts occurred across the seasons. Fortis and grasses were consumed in significantly …

Co2 Flux From Tundra Lichen, Moss, And Tussock, Council, Alaska: Assessment Of Spatial Representativeness, Yongwon Kim, Namyi Chae, Bangyong Lee

Research Posters

CO2 flux-measurement in dominant tundra vegetation on the Seward Peninsula of Alaska was examined for spatial representativeness, using a manual chamber system. In order to assess the representativeness of CO2 flux, a 40 m × 40 m (5-m interval; 81 total points) plot was used in June, August, and September of 2011. Average CO2 fluxes in lichen, moss, and tussock tundra were 3.4 ± 2.7, 4.5 ± 2.9, and 7.2 ± 5.7 mgCO2/m2/m during growing season, respectively, suggesting that tussock tundra is a significant CO2 source, especially considering the wide distribution of tussock tundra in the circumpolar region. Further, soil …

Improve Ocean Mixing Caused By Subgrid-Scale Brine Rejection Using Multi-Column Ocean Grid In A Climate Model, Meibing Jin, Jennifer Hutchings, Yusuke Kawaguchi, Takashi Kikuchi Dec 2012

Improve Ocean Mixing Caused By Subgrid-Scale Brine Rejection Using Multi-Column Ocean Grid In A Climate Model, Meibing Jin, Jennifer Hutchings, Yusuke Kawaguchi, Takashi Kikuchi

Research Posters

Heterogeneous ice pack with sporadic narrow but long leads in the polar oceans was unresolved in typical climate model grid. Although multi-category sea ice thickness distribution was used in one sea ice model grid to calculate separate heat, salt and tracer fluxes through each category, the ocean models use only single-column grid to communicate with the averaged fluxes from all categories. When the lead is resolved by the grid, the added salt at the sea surface will sink to the base of the mixed layer and then spread horizontally. When averaged at a climate-model grid size, this vertical distribution of …

Uncertainties In Arctic Precipitation, Ipshita Majhi, Vladimir Alexeev, Jessica Cherry, Pavel Groisman, Judah Cohen

Research Posters

It is crucial to measure precipitation accurately to predict future water budget with confidence. In our study, we aim to understand and compare precipitation datasets and discrepancies associated with them. We divide our datasets into three classes-raw data (data that have only been preprocessed to minimum quality control);corrected products (data that have been adjusted by their respective authors); finally, a reanalysis dataset (a combination of observed data and model output).

Gene, Pathway And Network Frameworks To Identify Epistatic Interactions Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Derived From Gwas Data, Yu Liu, Sean Maxwell, Tao Feng, Xiaofeng Zhu, Robert C. Elston, Mehmet Koyutürk, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Interactions among genomic loci (also known as epistasis) have been suggested as one of the potential sources of missing heritability in single locus analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The computational burden of searching for interactions is compounded by the extremely low threshold for identifying significant p-values due to multiple hypothesis testing corrections. Utilizing prior biological knowledge to restrict the set of candidate SNP pairs to be tested can alleviate this problem, but systematic studies that investigate the relative merits of integrating different biological frameworks and GWAS data have not been conducted. Results: We developed four biologically based frameworks to …

Closing The Church University In 1894: Embracing Or Accommodating Secularized Education, Brian William Ricks

Theses and Dissertations

The late 1800s have been noted as a major transitional period for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the beleaguered pioneers first arrived in Utah they were isolated from the influence and expectations of the United States. During that time, leaders of the Church became influential in every aspect of life in Utah. By the end of the nineteenth century, however, the period of isolation had come to an end. Nationally, the social norms had changed and religion was expected to stay in the churches and out of politics. Church leaders were faced with serious questions regarding …

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ang1 (Angiopoietin-1) have opposing effects on vascular permeability, but the molecular basis of these effects is not fully known. We report in this paper that VEGF and Ang1 regulate endothelial cell (EC) junctions by determining the localization of the RhoA-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor Syx. Syx was recruited to junctions by members of the Crumbs polarity complex and promoted junction integrity by activating Diaphanous. VEGF caused translocation of Syx from cell junctions, promoting junction disassembly, whereas Ang1 maintained Syx at the junctions, inducing junction stabilization. The VEGF-induced translocation of Syx from EC junctions was …

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger Dec 2012

Evaluation Of Prey Composition And Nutritional Value Of Diets Of Free-Ranging Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) From Tugidak Island, Gretchen L. Geiger

Marine Biology

Changes in climate can cause shifts in ecosystem structure that can affect quantity or quality of prey available to predator populations. Due to sex or age-specific behaviors of predators, certain classes within a population may be more severely impacted by changes in their diet. This study evaluated prey composition and nutritional value of summer diets of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) from Tugidak Island, Alaska from 2001-2009. The MIXIT-WIN program was used to estimate the nutritional value of average harbor seal diets. Changes in relative abundance of certain prey species were correlated to sea surface temperature anomalies. Despite changes in …

Module-Based Subnetwork Alignments Reveal Novel Transcriptional Regulators In Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Hong Cai, Changjin Hong, Jianying Gu, Timothy G. Lilburn, Rui Kuang, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background Malaria causes over one million deaths annually, posing an enormous health and economic burden in endemic regions. The completion of genome sequencing of the causative agents, a group of parasites in the genus Plasmodium, revealed potential drug and vaccine candidates. However, genomics-driven target discovery has been significantly hampered by our limited knowledge of the cellular networks associated with parasite development and pathogenesis. In this paper, we propose an approach based on aligning neighborhood PPI subnetworks across species to identify network components in the malaria parasite P. falciparum. Results Instead of only relying on sequence similarities to detect functional orthologs, …

Arctic Fox Winter Movement And Diet In Relation To Industrial Development On Alaska's North Slope, Neil S. Lehner

Biological Sciences

I examined winter movement and diet of Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in the Prudhoe Bay oilfields and an adjacent undeveloped area (National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A)). Movement metrics were compared between these areas using data from satellite collars. Daily travel rate was approximately 5 times greater in the undeveloped area than in Prudhoe Bay. Four adult foxes collared in NPR-A used the sea ice for extensive time periods. One of these foxes traveled 338 km in three days while another traveled to Banks Island (Northwest Territories, Canada), over 1050 km from its capture location. Prudhoe Bay foxes did not make these …

Acclimation And Migration Potential Of A Boreal Forest Tree, Balsam Poplar (Populus Balsamifera L.) In A Changing Climate, Amanda L. Robertson Dec 2012

Acclimation And Migration Potential Of A Boreal Forest Tree, Balsam Poplar (Populus Balsamifera L.) In A Changing Climate, Amanda L. Robertson

Biological Sciences

In the North American boreal forest, 21st century climate change is projected to result in longer growing seasons, increased forest productivity, and northward expansions or shifts in species ranges. These projected impacts are largely based on observations across natural temperature gradients, e.g., latitude or altitude, or correlations between current species' distributions and modern climate envelopes. These approaches, although valuable, do not consider biological capacities important in a species' ability to cope with novel environments through physiological or phenological acclimation. Within a single species, adaptation to local environments may cause some populations to respond differently to climate change than others. Acclimation …

A Test Of Local Adaptation In Seasonally Separate Subpopulations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Christopher V. Manhard Dec 2012

A Test Of Local Adaptation In Seasonally Separate Subpopulations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Christopher V. Manhard

Fisheries

Differences in fitness related traits were observed between first generation (F₁) hybrid and control lines of temporally distinct subpopulations of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). The lines were cultured in a common freshwater environment, released to sea together, and collected at their natal stream as adults. Early-and late-run pink salmon, which are partially genetically isolated by the time at which they return to Auke Creek in Southeast Alaska to spawn, were crossed to create F₁ and F₂ hybrid groups in the even- and odd-year brood lines. Marine survival of controls exceeded that of F₁ hybrids of the even-year brood line, whereas …

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson Dec 2012

Impacts Of Sea Otter Predation On Commercially Important Sea Cucumbers (Parastichopus Californicus) In Southeast Alaska, Sean D. Larson

Fisheries

Consequences from management actions, particularly those regarding species reintroductions, are not always immediately apparent. After sea otters were extirpated from Southeast Alaska in the 18th and 19th century fur trade, it is presumed that marine invertebrate stocks grew in the absence of sea otter predation. Since reintroduction in the 1960s, the Southeast Alaska sea otter population has grown, with great potential to deplete the commercially important sea cucumber, Parastichopus californicus. This study evaluates the interaction with and impacts of sea otters on sea cucumbers using foraging observations and sea cucumber density data collected for fishery management. Sea otter diets, in …

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth Dec 2012

Incorporating Stakeholder Input In Research Priorities For The Aleutian Islands, Rachael Margaret Wadsworth

Fisheries

Federal law requires that resource management agencies consider stakeholder input in the selection of preferred alternatives for proposed actions. Not only do stakeholders contribute unique perspectives on the impact of alternative actions and the desirability of various policy objectives, including stakeholders in the decision process adds to the perceived legitimacy of those decisions. Incorporating stakeholder input is legally required and advantageous to sustainable governance of the oceans and implementation of a National Ocean Policy such as ecosystem-based management. Agencies use a variety of formal and informal mechanisms to solicit and incorporate stakeholder input. In this study, we compare expert panel …

Quantity And Quality Of Freshwater Rearing Habitat In Relation To Juvenile Pacific Salmon Abundance In The Kulukak River, Alaska, Jesse M. Coleman

Fisheries

Monitoring of freshwater habitat and its influence on stream-rearing fish is essential for recognizing and mitigating the impacts of human- and climate-induced changes. For the purposes of developing a monitoring program in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, densities and habitat relationships of juvenile coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch and sockeye salmon O. nerka were estimated in two tributaries of the Kulukak River, Alaska, in July 2010. Multiple-pass depletion electrofishing was used to estimate density in a random sample of habitat units belonging to one of four categorical habitat classes. Regression methods were also used to quantify …

Neighborhood Perceptions And Emotional Well-Being In Young Adulthood, Karen A. Snedker, Carole Hooven

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Problem:

While mounting research suggests that neighborhood environment impacts mental health outcomes, for adolescents and adults, there is scant research on how perceived neighborhood context affects young adults. In this article, we explore the role of perceived neighborhood characteristics, specifically indicators of perceived neighborhood stressors, on emotional well-being among young adults.

Method:

Using a regional sample of young adults, we estimate regression models to examine the relationship of perceived neighborhood stressors on three mental health outcomes (depressed affect, hopelessness, and anger), reflective of a general emotional well-being, while controlling for key individual characteristics related to mental health outcomes.

Findings:

Distributed Development And Product Line Decisions, Ram Bala, V. Krishnan, Wenge Zhu Dec 2012

Distributed Development And Product Line Decisions, Ram Bala, V. Krishnan, Wenge Zhu

Information Systems and Analytics

Distributed product development is becoming increasingly prevalent in a number of industries. We study how the global distribution of product development impacts the profit-maximizing product line that a firm offers. Specifically, we formulate a model to understand the linkage between cost arbitrage as a driver of distributed development and consequent market implications such as customer perceived quality loss to remotely developed products. Analysis of the model reveals that a firm should expand the product line for a development-intensive good only at intermediate values of cost advantage and quality loss. We modify the base model to include development capacity constraints as …

Before my brother Rick left home that spring he tried to tell me something but I couldn't hear what he was saying. This was on account of the fact he liked the noise of a Harley Roadster but could only afford a secondhand Honda Scrambler. So he removed the muffler. And what he was doing then was quitting high school to escape the musty basement room we shared in Maine for the endless coast of Florida via Rout 1. He was going with his best friend Jimmy Taylor. Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik Dec 2012

Weather-Based Damage Prediction Models For Electric Distribution Networks, David W. Wanik

Master's Theses

From thunderstorms to hurricanes, electric distribution networks are subject to a wide range of warm weather storm events. Tropical Storm Irene (2011) and Hurricane Sandy (2012) are two events in recent memory that disrupted over half of The Connecticut Light and Power Company’s (CL&P) service territory, which left some customers without power for up to eleven days. This research study investigates a damage prediction framework for both thunderstorms and hurricanes that combines two generalized linear models to probabilistically determine the occurrence and extent of damages, known as trouble spots, to the overhead power distribution network. The models are inputted with …
