Influence Of Molecular Interactions On Elastic Properties And Oxygen Diffusion In Polybutylene Terephthalate Polymer: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Muniyamuthu Raviprasad

Civil and Environmental Engineering

In most barrier applications, both mechanical and diffusion properties of the material are important. In this thesis the evaluation of molecular mechanisms responsible for the enhanced elastic properties of Polymer Clay Nanocomposites (PCNs) and the molecular mechanisms of Oxygen diffusion in PolyButylene Terephthalate polymer are presented. Interaction energy between PCN constituents, conformational changes of polymer, interaction energy between Oxygen molecule and polymer, rate of Oxygen and Oxygen diffusion coefficient are evaluated. Molecular simulation studies of PolyButylene Terephthalate (PBT) clay nanocomposite and Nylon6 clay nanocomposite show that a higher crystallinity polymer such as PBT would require higher attractive and repulsive interactions …

Fate And Characteristics Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Through Wastewater Treatment Systems, Halis Simsek Jan 2012

Fate And Characteristics Of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Through Wastewater Treatment Systems, Halis Simsek

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) represents a significant portion (25-80%) of total dissolved nitrogen in the final effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). DON in treated wastewater, once degraded, causes oxygen depletion and/or eutrophication in receiving waters and should be reduced prior to discharge. Biodegradability, bioavailability, and photodegradability are important characteristics of wastewater derived DON and are subjects of research in this dissertation. Four research tasks were performed. In the first task, laboratory-scale chemostat experiments were conducted to examine whether solids retention time (SRT) could be used to control DON and biodegradable DON (BDON) in treated wastewater. Nine different SRTs from …

In Situ Groundwater Remediation Using Enricher Reactor-Permeable Reactive Biobarrier, Sreerama Murthy Kasi Somayajula Jan 2012

In Situ Groundwater Remediation Using Enricher Reactor-Permeable Reactive Biobarrier, Sreerama Murthy Kasi Somayajula

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Permeable reactive biobarrier (PRBB) is a flow-through zone where microorganisms degrade contaminants in groundwater. Discontinuous presence of contaminants in groundwater causes performance loss of a PRBB in removing the target contaminant. A novel enricher reactor (ER) - PRBB system was developed to treat groundwater with contaminants that reappear after an absence period. ER is an offline reactor for enriching contaminant degraders, which were used for augmenting PRBB to maintain its performance after a period of contaminant absence. The ER-PRBB concept was initially applied to remove benzene that reappeared after absence periods of 10 and 25 days. PRBBs without ER augmentation …

Embedded Reference Electrodes For Corrosion Potential Monitoring, Electrochemical Characterization, And Controlled-Potential Cathodic Protection, Bobbi Jo Elizabeth Merten

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

A thin wire Ag/AgCl reference electrode was prepared using 50 μm Ag wire in dilute FeCl3. The wire was embedded beneath the polyurethane topcoat of two sacrificial coating systems to monitor their corrosion potential. This is the first report of a reference electrode embedded between organic coating layers to monitor substrate health. The embedded reference electrode (ERE) successfully monitored the corrosion potential of Mg primer on AA 2024-T3 for 800 days of constant immersion in dilute Harrison’s solution. Zn primer on steel had low accuracy in comparison. This is in part due to short circuiting by Zn oxidation products, which …

A Rhetorical/Interpretive Analysis Of Edward R. Murrow's Criticism Of Broadcast Journalism: Implications For Broadcast Journalism Educators, Aaron Quanbeck Jan 2012

A Rhetorical/Interpretive Analysis Of Edward R. Murrow's Criticism Of Broadcast Journalism: Implications For Broadcast Journalism Educators, Aaron Quanbeck

Communication

Corporate influence has been an ongoing concern for working journalists. Even in the early days of television, Edward R. Murrow saw a bleak future for society if broadcasters succumbed to corporate greed and failed in their responsibility to inform the public. This rhetorical study of Murrow's 1958 speech to the Radio-Television News Directors Association, guided by Perelman's theory of the universal audience and presence, argues that Murrow's speech prioritized broadcast journalism's obligation to a democratic society and warned that commercial intrusion was impacting the profession's moral obligations. At the same time, in appealing to a particular audience, Murrow deemphasized the …

Measuring The Performance Of Partnerships: Why, What, How, When?, C Kelly Jan 2012

Measuring The Performance Of Partnerships: Why, What, How, When?, C Kelly

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Partnerships have become increasingly prevalent across a wide range of sectors for the delivery of services and implementation of policy. Partnerships are seen as a more effective way of delivering policy interventions than state-led or ‘top-down’ approaches. Evaluating partnership performance is therefore crucial in order to determine whether partnerships really are better than more traditional methods of policy implementation. To date, however, partnership effectiveness has often been conceptualised as cumulative; the result of a set of variables acting in a one dimensional, linear way which results in the ability (or not) of a partnership to achieve its goals. This paper …

Efficient Publish/Subscribe System Over Mobile Ad-Hoc Network, Chao Liu Jan 2012

Efficient Publish/Subscribe System Over Mobile Ad-Hoc Network, Chao Liu

Computer Science

Information dissemination is an important issue for mobile ad-hoc communities. This issue is very challenging due to the dynamic and fragile nature of the mobile ad-hoc networks, in which participants have limited computing resources and battery, intermittent network connections, and mobile tasks. To address the aforementioned issue, this thesis proposes an efficient semantics-based publish/subscribe strategy. In our proposed publish/subscribe system, distributed mobile participants are organized into clusters based on their location proximity. A compact semantics-based indexing scheme is provided to guide information flow. Intra- and inter- cluster routings are proposed to assist efficient propagation of event notifications. A comprehensive set …

Capacitated Transshipment Models For Predicting Signaling Pathways, Ritika Sahni Jan 2012

Capacitated Transshipment Models For Predicting Signaling Pathways, Ritika Sahni

Computer Science

Signal transduction is a process of transmitting signals for controlling biological responses. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) data, containing signal transduction proteins, can be considered as a bi-directional, weighted network with the proteins as nodes, the interactions between them as edges, and the confidence score of the interaction as weights on edges. If the edges of this network are given a capacity of one, and if the starting and ending proteins are the supply and demand nodes, then this problem can be modeled as a capacitated transshipment model with pathways as the solutions. Our application concerns finding the signaling pathways for …

Adaptive Regression Testing Strategy: An Empirical Study, Md. Junaid Arafeen Jan 2012

Adaptive Regression Testing Strategy: An Empirical Study, Md. Junaid Arafeen

Computer Science

When software systems evolve, different amounts of code modifications can be involved in different versions. These factors can affect the costs and benefits of regression testing techniques, and thus, there may be no single regression testing technique that is the most cost-effective technique to use on every version. To date, many regression testing techniques have been proposed, but no research has been done on the problem of helping practitioners systematically choose appropriate techniques on new versions as systems evolve. To address this problem, we propose adaptive regression testing (ART) strategies that attempt to identify the regression testing techniques that will …

Evaluation Of A Novel Means To Euthanize Piglets, Richelle Lorraine Miller Jan 2012

Evaluation Of A Novel Means To Euthanize Piglets, Richelle Lorraine Miller

Animal Sciences

Research was conducted to evaluate a novel means to euthanize piglets utilizing electromagnetic energy. Experiment 1 assessed if electromagnetic energy could result in a euthanized piglet and Experiment 2 evaluated states of consciousness of piglets. During Experiment 1, six piglets were exposed to 40 seconds of electromagnetic energy (EME). Respiration rate was reduced to zero in each piglet immediately following EME and unassisted death occurred after heart rate ceased within 4.8 minutes after EME in five of the six piglets. Treatments during Experiment 2 included EME for 3, 6, or 9 seconds. State of consciousness and treatment interaction affected (P < 0.01) electroencephalogram amplitude and power. State of consciousness affected (P < 0.01) electroencephalogram frequency and heart rate. Treatment and EME interaction also affected internal body and head surface temperatures (P < 0.01). Piglets exposed to 9 seconds EME had higher (P < 0.01) body temperature compared with other treatments.
