Understanding The Role Of Transgenic Catalase In T-Cell Development In Murine-Based Studies, Richard M. Smith Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Transgenic Catalase In T-Cell Development In Murine-Based Studies, Richard M. Smith

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The thymus provides a unique microenvironment that facilitates T lymphocytes differentiation and maturation. However, the thymus atrophies after puberty which leads to an overall expression of metabolism gene pathways and low gene expression of certain peroxide scavenger enzymes such as catalase in thymic stromal compartments. From this data, we postulate that thymic stromal cells are highly susceptible to oxidative damage. We utilized a transgenic mice model overexpressing human catalase targeted to the mitochondria (mCat) to test our hypothesis that gerater oxidative protection should lower the degree of thymus atrophy. Our experiment focused on a direct comparison of organ weights (thymus, …

Devising A Novel Protocol To Study 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine's Role In The Consolidation Of A Methamphatamine [Sic] Associated Contextual Memory, John David. Odom Jan 2012

Devising A Novel Protocol To Study 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine's Role In The Consolidation Of A Methamphatamine [Sic] Associated Contextual Memory, John David. Odom

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

DNA methylation, the addition of a methyl group to the 5' position of DNA cytosines (5mC), is generally associated with transcriptional repression during early embryo formation ; however, in the adult brain, it is dynamically regulated and plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of memory. Very recently, it has been hypothesized that DNA hydroxymethylation, the addition of a hydroxyl group to methylated cytosines (5mC), serves as an intermediate in the DNA demethylation pathway. GIven its recent discovery, the role of DNA hydroxymethylation in memory has not yet been explored. In this study, we developed an immunofluorescent triple …

Proteomic Identification Of N86-Hnrnpu-Interacting Proteins Involved In Hiv-1 Inhibition, Sarah. Hoxha Jan 2012

Proteomic Identification Of N86-Hnrnpu-Interacting Proteins Involved In Hiv-1 Inhibition, Sarah. Hoxha

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

HIV-1 is the human immunodeficiency virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. Multiple cellular proteins have been identified as playing a critical role in all steps of HIV-1 replication. The heterogeneous nuclear ribonuclear protein U, or hnRNPU is a RNA and DNA binding protein known to influence pre-mRNA processsing, transport to the cytoplasm, intracellular localization, translation and turnover of mRNAs. Recently, the expression of N86-hnRNPU, an N-terminal fragment of hnRNPU, was found to inhibit HIV-1 mRNA export (6). This study primarily aims at identifying proteins that associate with the fragment (N86-hnRNPU) also called H1, and secondarily …

Use Of Novel Hdaci's For Treatment Of Memory Impairment In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jonathan. Moyes Jan 2012

Use Of Novel Hdaci's For Treatment Of Memory Impairment In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jonathan. Moyes

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an increasingly common neurological disorder that mainly affects memory formation and retention. It is characterized by unique intercellular neurofibrillary tangles and extracellular beta-amyloid plaques. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi's) are competitive antagonists against histone deacetylases, causing histone acetyltransferases to acetylate the genome unregulated. This thesis investigates the use of new histone deacetylase inhibitors on recovering memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. By use of a fear conditioning paradigm, we have shown that these HDACI's increase memory in AD mice, but show either no effect or a positive effect in wild-type mice. Future experiments will investigate …

Iron And Mitochondrial Aging, Rafael. Paez Jan 2012

Iron And Mitochondrial Aging, Rafael. Paez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Aging is a process characterized by accumulated oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids, which leads to the gradual degeneration of cellular activity. Mitochondria play a central role in aging because they produce both cellular energy and oxidative stress. As resultof accumulated oxidative damage, mitochondria function decays, which leads to a cellular energy deficit and compromises cellular function. Iron is an essential nutrient reequired by mitodhondria to function optimally. It has been proved that iron supplementation increases the lifespan of several yeast strains, including superoxide dismutase mutants. We are interested in finding where the iron is going and what it might …

Effect Of Mutated Aconitase On Yeast Longevity, Cj. Kwan Jan 2012

Effect Of Mutated Aconitase On Yeast Longevity, Cj. Kwan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Aconitase is an important enzyme in the citric Acid Cycle, is needed for maintenance of mitochondrial DNA, is a key regulator of iron in the cell, and is very sensitive to oxidative stress. We have isolatd the yeast ACO1 gene, which codes for aconitase, and randomly mutated it to create a mutant library of cells each expressing a different version of ACO1. We will select for oxidative stress resistant aconitase in S. cerevisiae by subjecting strains to successive rounds of heat shock and competitive growth against other mutants. The "winner" of this competition will then be analyzed for which version …

Olympic Legacy, Emma Nunan Jan 2012

Olympic Legacy, Emma Nunan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Hosting an Olympic Games has a major impact on the city and its people. I compared the Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004 approaches to "legacy," the lasting impacts of a Games. I grouped my comparison into three categories : Economic, Urban and Environmental Impacts, and Global and Social Identity. In Olympic circles, few cities live up to the long-term planning standard set by Barcelona, especially in urban regeneration. However, most scholars agree that Athens did not plan for the post-Games period as effectively as they could have. Barcelona had better organization and cooperation, while the Athens organizers and the government …

Verb Acquisition And Generalization Strategies Of Preschool Children, Rita Pruzansky Jan 2012

Verb Acquisition And Generalization Strategies Of Preschool Children, Rita Pruzansky

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This experiment tested 3 to 5-year-old children's (n=18) abilities to learn a novel verb in the context of one or two novel objects. We showed the children claymation videos of novel creatures performing two novel actions. They were then tested on whether they could correctly identify the action that a creature was performing in the form of a 'yes' or 'no' response. Children in the blocked condition, who learned the verbs in the context of one creature, responded correctly more often (p=.01) than children in the grouped condition, who learned the verbs in the context of two creatures. Results were …

Creation Of An Aconitase Overexpression Strain Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae For Lifespan Analysis, Steve. Nunes Jan 2012

Creation Of An Aconitase Overexpression Strain Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae For Lifespan Analysis, Steve. Nunes

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In my thesis work, I attempted to construct a plasmid that would allow stable integration of genes into the Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast genome under the control of the repressible TetO promoter. The yeast ACO1 gene was cloned under the control of the TetO operator and the tTA transactivator. This construct was inserted into yeast cells in order to observe the effects of aconitase overexpression on aging. Unfortunately, the transformed cells appeared incapable of aconitase expression as determined by glutamic acid auxptrophy, a phenotype of aconitase mutants. We have sequenced the pIT1ACO1 plasmid and have found many abnormalities in the promoter …

Pay-To-Pave", Melinda. Florscher Jan 2012

Pay-To-Pave", Melinda. Florscher

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This study assesses the philosophical underpinnings of endangered species protections focused on gopher tortoises in Florida. From 1993-2007, gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) were listed in Florida as a species of special concern. Land developers wanting to build on their habitats could apply for an incidental take permit, paying a fee that allowed tortoises to be 'entombed' in their burrows to die a slow death. In 2007, when gopher tortoise status was up-losted to 'threatened', a new policy ended the incidental take permit program. This study compares policy guidelines of the 1991 and 2007 gopher tortoise management plans and explores cases …

Punishing A Person For Another's Crime, Lauren Theresa Gomez Jan 2012

Punishing A Person For Another's Crime, Lauren Theresa Gomez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The felony-murder rule declares that if a death occurs during the commission of a felony, all persons involved in the felony will be held culpable for the death. The rule makes every person equally culpable for the death, regardless of his or her mental state and degree of involvement during the crime. Drawing on theories of punishment and scholarship on culpability, I argue that the felony-murder rule needs to be modified. Each person involved in the crime should not be held accountable for the actions of another, but should only be held responsible and culpable for their own intended actions.

Right-Libertarians, The Fair Tax, And Big Government, Joseph A. Brittian Jan 2012

Right-Libertarians, The Fair Tax, And Big Government, Joseph A. Brittian

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

I begin by identifying right-libertarians as individuals who believe, foremost, that legislators should reduce the size of the national government. A number of right-libertarians support a Congressional tax reform proposal, the Fair Tax. This support is surprising because the bill is revenue neutral : it therefore does not directly address concerns over increasing Congressional spending or growth of government. Are right-libertarians sacrificing their principles for expediency or is there some other explanation? I argue right-libertarians mainly support the bill because they (1) believe Congress would abolish the IRS as soon as it went into effect, increasing citizens' privacy in the …

Adopting The Orphan: Determining The Role Of The Motor Protein Kif9 During The Cell Cycle, Miguel E. Rivera Rios Jan 2012

Adopting The Orphan: Determining The Role Of The Motor Protein Kif9 During The Cell Cycle, Miguel E. Rivera Rios

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The kinesin superfamily of microtubule motor proteins is subdivided into families based upon structure and function. KIF9 is the founding member of the Kinesin-9 family, which is a largely uncharacterized group of kinesins. It was originally identified by sequence homology to other kinesins. Subsequent studies have shown that KIF9 interacts with proteins involved in cell shape remodeling, cell migration and proper centrosomal positioning. We have examined KIF9 function in mammalian cells using shRNA-mediated knockdown and GFP-plasmid overexpression. By knocking dow KIF9 expression in these cells, we have seen several effects on normal cell cycle progression. Using various cell cycle markers, …

Social Networks And Personality In A Liberal Arts College, Amrita Gopaldas Jan 2012

Social Networks And Personality In A Liberal Arts College, Amrita Gopaldas

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this study, relationships between social networks and personality in a small liberal arts college were examined. Participants were asked to list members of their social networks, the activities in which they participated, and to complete the Sentence Completion Test (SCT), and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). On the CPI, individuals with high scores on measures related to extraversion (particularaly the CPI Sociability scale) will have a greater network size and report a larger number of activities. In additon, the extent to which participants formed relationships with individuals with similar levels of ego development, and similar personality profiles, that is, …

You Keep Me Hangin' On, Ariel. Le Jan 2012

You Keep Me Hangin' On, Ariel. Le

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Dynactin is a multisubunit protein complex that functions as a processivity cofactor to cytoplasmic dynein, assisting in vesicle transport and cell division. Independent of dynein, dynactin also serves to anchor microtubules to the centrosome. The functions of the majority of dynactin's subunits have been described to a certain degree ; however, the p24 subunit remains largely uncharacterized. Among the few things that are known about p24 are that it has a predicted molecular weight of about 20,822 Da, forms an a-helix, and binds directly to the p150[Glued] subunit. In order to explore its function further, we have performed shRNA-mediated knockdown, and …

Employing Cultural Landscapes In Community Preservation, Rachel Blythe Jan 2012

Employing Cultural Landscapes In Community Preservation, Rachel Blythe

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Druid Hills is a historic suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, that was initially designed by landscape architech Frederick Law Olmsted in 1893. As one of Atlanta's first suburbs, Druid Hills has faced the consequences of sprawl, particularly in the 1980s when the Georgia Department of Transportation proposed construction of the Presidential Parkway, an expressway that would have cut through the middle of the neighborhood. In opposition to the expressway, members of the surrounding communities organized Citizens Against Unnecessary Thoroughfares In Older Neighborhoods (CAUTION). The strategic rhetoric of CAUTION's campaign emphasized Druid Hills' significance as "Olmsted's Vision of Atlanta," yet their use …

Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu Jan 2012

Cardinal Functions And Integral Functions, Florentin Smarandache, Mircea Selariu, Marian Nitu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper presents the correspondences of the eccentric mathematics of cardinal and integral functions and centric mathematics, or ordinary mathematics. Centric functions will also be presented in the introductory section, because they are, although widely used in undulatory physics, little known. In centric mathematics, cardinal sine and cosine are dened as well as the integrals. Both circular and hyperbolic ones. In eccentric mathematics, all these central functions multiplies from one to innity, due to the innity of possible choices where to place a point. This point is called eccenter S(s;") which lies in the plane of unit circle UC(O;R = …

Centric Cardinal Sine Function, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2012

Centric Cardinal Sine Function, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

According to any standard dictionary, the word "cardinal" is synonymous with "principal", "essential", "fundamental". In centric mathematics (CM), or ordinary mathematics, cardinal is, on the one hand, a number equal to a number of finite aggregate, called the power of the aggregate, and on the other hand, known as the sine cardinal sinc(x) or cosine cardinal cosc(x), is a special function defined by the centric circular function (CCF). sin(x) and cos(x) are commonly used in undulatory physics (see Figure 1) and whose graph, the graph of cardinal sine, which is called as "Mexican hat" (sombrero) because of its shape.

Neutrosophic Masses & Indeterminate Models Applications To Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2012

Neutrosophic Masses & Indeterminate Models Applications To Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we introduce the indeterminate models in information fusion, which are due either to the existence of some indeterminate elements in the fusion space or to some indeterminate masses. The best approach for dealing with such models is the neutrosophic logic.

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia Jan 2012

Topic Based Query Suggestions For Video Search, Kong-Wah Wan, Ah-Hwee Tan, Joo-Hwee Lim, Liang-Tien Chia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Query suggestion is an assistive technology mechanism commonly used in search engines to enable a user to formulate their search queries by predicting or completing the next few query words that the user is likely to type. In most implementations, the suggestions are mined from query log and use some simple measure of query similarity such as query frequency or lexicographical matching. In this paper, we propose an alternative method of presenting query suggestions by their thematic topics. Our method adopts a document-centric approach to mine topics in the corpus, and does not require the availability of a query log. …

Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun Jan 2012

Performance Analysis Of Two Priority Queuing Systems In Tandem, Faouzi Kamoun

All Works

In this paper, we consider a tandem of two head-of-line (HOL) non-preemptive priority queuing systems, each with a single server and a deterministic service-time. Two classes of traffic are considered, namely high priority and low priority traffic. By means of a generating function approach, we present a technique to derive closed-form expressions for the mean buffer occupancy at each node and mean delay. Finally, we illustrate our solution technique with some numerical examples, whereby we illustrate the starvation impact of the HOL priority scheduling discipline on the performance of the low-priority traffic stream. Our research highlights the important fact that …

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh Jan 2012

A Hybridized Lagrangian Relaxation And Simulated Annealing Method For The Course Timetabling Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kim Leng Poh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a timetabling problem at universities, where a master course timetable is given extrinsically and conflicts due to students' course enrollment do not need to be considered. A solver for the problem, which integrates both teacher assignment and course scheduling, is described. An initial solution is obtained by a mathematical programming approach based on Lagrangian relaxation. This solution is further improved by a simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on instances from a university in Indonesia, as well as on several randomly generated datasets, and the corresponding computational results are reported.

Simultaneous Camera Pose And Correspondence Estimation With Motion Coherence, Wen-Yan Lin, Loong-Fah Cheong, Ping Tan, Guo Dong, Siying Liu Jan 2012

Simultaneous Camera Pose And Correspondence Estimation With Motion Coherence, Wen-Yan Lin, Loong-Fah Cheong, Ping Tan, Guo Dong, Siying Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditionally, the camera pose recovery problem has been formulated as one of estimating the optimal camera pose given a set of point correspondences. This critically depends on the accuracy of the point correspondences and would have problems in dealing with ambiguous features such as edge contours and high visual clutter. Joint estimation of camera pose and correspondence attempts to improve performance by explicitly acknowledging the chicken and egg nature of the pose and correspondence problem. However, such joint approaches for the two-view problem are still few and even then, they face problems when scenes contain largely edge cues with few …
