Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Boonlawat Homvises Jan 2012

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Boonlawat Homvises

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Surgery is the mainstay treatment in most of thoracic diseases for a long time but there are some limitations. Thoracic surgery is the operation that need general anesthesia and long incision with separation for muscle and rib through the chest wall. Therefore, postoperative pain is hardly avoidable which leads to more postoperative morbidity and mortality. After the development of endoscopic techniques, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a minimal invasive surgery which becomes very popular. The aim of this article is to review articles, recommendations and conclusions about VATS in management of thoracic disease.

Necrotizing Fasciitis, Parin Tatsanavivat Jan 2012

Necrotizing Fasciitis, Parin Tatsanavivat

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon disease of soft tissue infection with mild clinical appearance. As a result of its rarity and minimal early symptomatology, late diagnosis is a common problem. This disease has high morbidity and mortality, moreover medical professions should keep in mind of necrotizing fasciitis when dealing with patients with soft tissue infection. Recently, many studies try to achieve early diagnosis with laboratory tests but the results can only support the clinical diagnosis and indicate the severity of the disease. In this article, we review the general knowledge of the disease, laboratory abnormalities as well as the latest …

Biochemical Mechanism In Programmed Cell Death: An Overview, Panadda Rojpibulstit Jan 2012

Biochemical Mechanism In Programmed Cell Death: An Overview, Panadda Rojpibulstit

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Programmed cell death (PCD) is the cellular process in response with any cellular dangerous stimulus. It can be divided into several types depend on ultra-structural changes detected by electron transmission microscope and biochemical pathway involving in the processes. In conclusion, two main pathways relying on an initiating point has been proposed, i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic pathway. Intrinsic pathway is initiated by the mitochondrial permeabilization resulting in cytochrome c releasing out which then activated the caspase-9. While an extrinsic pathway is started off after cell surface death receptor bound with the death signal for example Fas ligand. This event finally triggers …

Antimicrobial Sutures: Review And Update, Chatchai Mingmalairak Jan 2012

Antimicrobial Sutures: Review And Update, Chatchai Mingmalairak

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Surgical site infections (SSIs) occur when pathogenic organisms proliferate in surgical wounds, resulting in impediment of wound healing, separation of the wound edges (dehiscence), and increase in risk of abscesses in deeper wound tissues. Serious SSIs can progress from local to systemic infection, increase mortality risk, associate with longer length of stay in the hospital, cause a greater risk of readmission, and incur higher healthcare costs. Sutures can be a source of surgical wound contamination due to bacterial adherence and colonization. Sutures that were impregnated or coated with antibacterial agents have been developed in attempt to reduce bacterial adherence and …

Faculty Perceptions Of The Value Of Academic Libraries: A Mixed Method Study, Kelly L. Heider, Sandra Janicki, Joann Janosko, Blaine Knupp, Carl Rahkonen

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article details the findings of a year-long study at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Libraries which examined IUP faculty members’ perceptions of the value of library resources and services to both their research and teaching. Through a mixed-method study, which included an online survey and follow-up focus groups, the researchers found that faculty were dissatisfied with IUP Libraries’ marketing initiatives but satisfied with its small embedded librarian program. As a result, marketing and growth of the embedded librarian program became the two main focus areas for improvement in the next academic year.

The Genetics Of Neuroendocrine Prostate Cancers: A Review Of Current And Emerging Candidates, M Hammad Ather, Tahmeena Siddiqui

Department of Surgery Docs

Prostate cancer (PC) displays a strong familial link and genetic factors; genes regulating inflammation may have a pivotal role in the disease. Epigenetic changes control chromosomal integrity, gene functions, and, ultimately, carcinogenesis. The most widely studied epigenetic event in PC is aberrant DNA methylation (hypo- and hypermethylation); besides this, chromatin remodeling and micro RNA (miRNA) are other studied alterations in PC. These all lead to genomic instability and inappropriate gene expression. Causative dysfunction of histone modifying enzymes results in generic and locus-specific changes in chromatin remodeling. miRNA deregulation also contributes to prostate carcinogenesis, including interference with androgen-receptor signaling and apoptosis. …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: There is little information about which intimate partner violence (IPV) policies and services assist in the identification of IPV in the emergency department (ED). The objective of this study was to examine the association between a variety of resources and documented IPV diagnoses. Methods: Using billing data assembled from 21 Oregon EDs from 2001 to 2005, we identified patients assigned a discharge diagnosis of IPV. We then surveyed ED directors and nurse managers to gain information about IPV-related policies and services offered by participating hospitals. We combined billing data, survey results and hospital-level variables. Multivariate analysis assessed the likelihood …

Building Support For The Introductory Oral Communication Course: Strategies For Widespread And Enduring Support On Campus, Jon A. Hess

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

A strong introductory course is important for many communication departments, for the discipline, and for meeting our obligation to society. This paper utilizes the example of a recent curricular reform that threatened to eliminate a required oral communication course to reflect on strategies departments can use to build widespread and lasting support for the course. The paper reviews the events that led to the challenge and details the department’s response, which offers lessons that may be useful for other institutions. Four lessons include: tailoring the introductory course to the institution’s needs and mission, involvement in university work, making compelling use …

Clarifying Communication Competencies Through An Interdisciplinary Approach To Communication Pedagogy, Mary Mino Jan 2012

Clarifying Communication Competencies Through An Interdisciplinary Approach To Communication Pedagogy, Mary Mino

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The increased focus on assessment has resulted in a greater demand and pressure for communication programs to validate that students have learned and can apply communication competencies. However, for the most part, communication educators have offered no well-defined guidelines or systematic approaches that have been endorsed unequivocally. Although literature has described Relationship Enhancement (RE) as an extremely successful approach for improving oral communication, it has not been studied by the majority of communication educators. Through its nine basic skills, the RE Approach offers specific guidelines that systematically operationalize how to communicate effectively. This essay shares integrative research that develops a …

Forensics is an extremely popular extracurricular activity in the communication discipline and often provides competitors with skills required for success in graduate school. This exploratory study examines the relationships between forensics competition and success in graduate school. Through a survey of 169 graduate students, we compare graduate students with a forensics background (n = 35) and those without a forensics background (n = 134). The study generates several important findings. First, graduate students who competed in forensics report higher levels success in graduate school and are more likely to present conference papers and publish in academic journals. Second, the level …
