Distinguishing dendritic cells (DCs) from other cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system is complicated by the shared expression of cell surface markers such as CD11c. In this study, we identified Zbtb46 (BTBD4) as a transcription factor selectively expressed by classical DCs (cDCs) and their committed progenitors but not by plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), monocytes, macrophages, or other lymphoid or myeloid lineages. Using homologous recombination, we replaced the first coding exon of Zbtb46 with GFP to inactivate the locus while allowing detection of Zbtb46 expression. GFP expression in Zbtb46(gfp/+) mice recapitulated the cDC-specific expression of the native locus, being restricted to cDC …

Interpersonal Complementarity In The Mental Health Intake: A Mixed-Methods Study, Daniel C. Rosen, Alisa B. Miller, Ora Nakash, Lucila Halpern, Margarita Alegría

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

The study examined which socio-demographic differences between clients and providers influenced interpersonal complementarity during an initial intake session; that is, behaviors that facilitate harmonious interactions between client and provider. Complementarity was assessed using blinded ratings of 114 videotaped intake sessions by trained observers. Hierarchical linear models were used to examine how match between client and provider in race/ethnicity, sex, and age were associated with levels of complementarity. A qualitative analysis investigated potential mechanisms that accounted for overall complementarity beyond match by examining client-provider dyads in the top and bottom quartiles of the complementarity measure. Results indicated significant interactions between client's …

Information Security Policy Compliance: An Ethical Perspective, Ahmad Al-Omari, Omar F. El-Gayar, Amit Deokar, Jack Walters

Research & Publications

Ethical issues are key factors with respect to compliance intention with information security policies (ISPs). As such, understanding employees' compliance behavior with ISPs from ethical lenses is an important first step to leverage knowledge worker assets in efforts targeted toward reducing information security risks. This study proposes an integrated model that combines the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and ethics theories; deontology and teleology, to examine users' behavioral intention to comply with ISPs. This is a research in progress, and an instrument is under development to conduct a survey study to gather data from employees in the banking sector in …

Evaluating The Impact Of Ehr On Clinical Reasoning Performance: A Ttf Perspective, Matthew J. Wills, Omar F. El-Gayar, Amit Deokar

Research & Publications

The proliferation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) as a backbone for healthcare delivery necessitates adequate tools for evaluating and improving the efficacy of such investments particularly as it relates to clinical reasoning performance. However, a thorough review of the literature indicates lack of a tested, validated instrument for evaluating and predicting the impact of EHR use on clinical reasoning performance. Despite successful application to a variety of other industries, TTF has not been adequately adapted to healthcare, EHR technology or the clinical reasoning task. Accordingly, the objectives of this research are to: 1) produce a valid instrument with diagnostic and …

Cycles Of Electronic Health Records Adaptation By Physicians: How Do The Positive And Negative Experience With The Ehr System Affect Physicians' Ehr Adaptation Process?, Cherie Noteboom, Dhundy Bastola, Sajda Qureshi

Research & Publications

The integration of EHR in IT infrastructures supporting organizations enable improved access and recording of patient data, enhanced ability to make improved decisions, improved quality and reduced errors in patient care. Despite these benefits, there are mixed results as to the use of EHR. The literature suggests that the reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians’ limited interaction and adaptation of EHR.

Following an analysis of qualitative data, collected in a case study at a hospital using interviews, this research explains how physicians interact …

A Semantic Foundation For Provenance Management, Sudha Ram, Jun Liu Jan 2012

A Semantic Foundation For Provenance Management, Sudha Ram, Jun Liu

Research & Publications

Provenance is a term used to describe the lineage, history, or origin of an object. While provenance originated from the artworld, it is now becoming increasingly important in the context of digital objects on the World Wide Web. Large scale scientific collaborations and social media platforms on the web have enabled production and sharing of a variety of digital objects on the web. With the proliferation and sharing of such objects, which include documents, pictures, videos, and more, questions such as “where did this object come from?”, “who else is using this object?” and “for what purpose was it generated?” …

Security Policy Compliance: User Acceptance Perspective, Ahmad Al-Omari, Omar F. El-Gayar, Amit Deokar

Research & Publications

Information security policy compliance is one of the key concerns that face organizations today. Although, technical and procedural security measures help improve information security, there is an increased need to accommodate human, social and organizational factors. While employees are considered the weakest link in information security domain, they also are assets that organizations need to leverage effectively. Employees’ compliance with Information Security Policies (ISPs) is critical to the success of an information security program. The purpose of this research is to develop a measurement tool that provides better measures for predicting and explaining employees’ compliance with ISPs by examining the …

The Mediating Role Of Adaptive Personalization In Online Shopping, Son Bui, Insu Park, William Kettinger Jan 2012

The Mediating Role Of Adaptive Personalization In Online Shopping, Son Bui, Insu Park, William Kettinger

Research & Publications

In the context of e-commerce, personalization system provides customers with recommendations on what products to buy. Grounded on social exchange theory, this study empirically examines and theoretically articulates the effects of willingness to share information and adaptive personalization on willingness to repurchase products. A survey was conducted and PLS was used demonstrating that adaptive personalization fully mediates the relationship between willingness to share information and willingness to repurchase products. The results suggest that online customers might take risks to provide their information to online retailers in exchange of offerings, and that continuous capturing of customer’s preferences throughout their interaction time …

Underwater Object Detection And Identification Using Distributed Pressure Sensors, Audrey Maertens Jan 2012

Underwater Object Detection And Identification Using Distributed Pressure Sensors, Audrey Maertens

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Underwater vision is usually limited. Object detection and identification is therefore one of the main challenges of underwater navigation. A new sensing modality, specifically developed for underwater environments, would greatly increase the scope of underwater missions. Taking inspiration from the lateral line of fish, I believe that pressure sensing can be a viable alternative to vision in order to detect and identify obstacles. Recent advances in the area of micro-engineering will soon enable to build sensors that match the size and mimic the functions and organization of the lateral line. However, little is known about how the pressure distribution along …

Functional Analysis Of Conserved Motifs In The Mechanosensitive Channel Homolog Mscs-Like2 From Arabidopsis Thaliana, Gregory S. Jensen, Elizabeth S. Haswell

Biology Faculty Research

The Mechanosensitive channel of Small conductance (MscS) of Escherichia coli has become an excellent model system for the structural, biophysical, and functional study of mechanosensitive ion channels. MscS, a complex channel with multiple states, contributes to protection against lysis upon osmotic downshock. MscS homologs are widely and abundantly dispersed among the bacterial and plant lineages, but are not found in animals. Investigation into the eukaryotic branch of the MscS family is in the beginning stages, and it remains unclear how much MscS homologs from eukaryotes resemble E. coli MscS with respect to structure, function, and regulation. Here we test the …

Between Semiotic Democracy And Disobedience: Two Views Of Branding, Culture And Intellectualproperty, Sonia K. Katyal Jan 2012

Between Semiotic Democracy And Disobedience: Two Views Of Branding, Culture And Intellectualproperty, Sonia K. Katyal

Faculty Scholarship

Even though most scholars and judges treat intellectual property law as a predominantly content-neutral phenomenon, trademark law contains a statutory provision, section 2(a), that provides for the cancellation of marks that are “disparaging,” “immoral,” or “scandalous.” This provision has raised intrinsically powerful constitutional concerns, which invariably affect two central metaphors that are at war within trademark law: the marketplace of goods, which premises itself on the fixedness of intellectual properties, and the marketplace of ideas, which is premised on the very fluidity of language itself. Since the architecture of trademark law focuses only on how marks communicate information about a …

Neuroscience And The Child Welfare System, Clare Huntington Jan 2012

Neuroscience And The Child Welfare System, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

A growing body of research by neuroscientists demonstrates that a child’s early life experiences and environment literally shape the child’s brain architecture, with lifelong consequences that are very difficult to reverse. Children’s relationships with their primary caregivers are at the core of this brain development, but when this relationship is severely deficient, the developing child’s brain is deeply affected. This research has not gained sufficient recognition in policy debates about the child welfare system because much of the work is complex and hard for non-neuroscientists to decipher with nuance. This essay brings a family law scholar’s perspective to understanding the …
