The Effect Of Various Long-Term Tillage Systems On Soil Properties And Spring Barley Yield, Irena Malecka, Andrzej Blecharczyk, Zuzanna Sawinska, Tomasz Dobrzeniecki
The Effect Of Various Long-Term Tillage Systems On Soil Properties And Spring Barley Yield, Irena Malecka, Andrzej Blecharczyk, Zuzanna Sawinska, Tomasz Dobrzeniecki
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study, performed on a soil that is classified as Albic Luvisols that developed on loamy sands overlying loamy material (1.4% organic matter and pH 6.5), concerns the impact of tillage systems on soil properties and the yield of spring barley. The experiment design included 3 tillage systems: conventional tillage, reduced tillage, and no-tillage. Continuous cultivation for 7 consecutive years by reduced tillage and no-tillage led to changes in the physical properties of the surface soil layer (0-5 cm). At the stem elongation growth stage of spring barley, conservation tillage systems resulted in a higher water content and bulk density …

Laminated Veneer Lumber (Lvl) Manufacturing Using Three Hybrid Poplar Clones, Ramazan Kurt, Hayretti̇n Meri̇ç, Kağan Aslan, Muhammet Çi̇l
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Laminated veneer lumbers (LVLs) were manufactured from veneers of 3 rotary peeled fast growing hybrid poplar clones, I-214 (Populus ×euramericana), I-77/51 (Populus deltoides), and S.307-26 (Populus deltoides), with a phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive. Two Populus deltoides clones that are grown in Turkey were used for the first time in LVL production. The clone effect on selected LVLs' physical, mechanical, and combustion properties were investigated and compared to those of host woods (HWs). In addition, the suitability of 2 new Populus deltoides clones in addition to Populus ×euramericana was determined for LVL manufacturing. The properties of LVLs were affected by clone …
Two-Stage Sampling To Estimate Individual Tree Biomass, Ramazan Özçeli̇k, Tuncay Eraslan
Two-Stage Sampling To Estimate Individual Tree Biomass, Ramazan Özçeli̇k, Tuncay Eraslan
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The accurate estimation of tree biomass is crucial for the efficient management of forest resources. In this study, we used a subsampling method for unbiased estimates of above-ground tree biomass. The method consists of 2 stages: the first stage consists of randomized branch sampling (RBS) and the second stage uses importance sampling (IS). RBS is used to select a path from the butt of an object branch to a terminal segment. IS is used for selecting a disk that produces unbiased estimates of the fresh biomass of tree. In this study, the subsampling method was tested on 14 black pine …

The Effects Of Different Tillage Methods On The Post-Wheat Second Crop Sesame: Seed Yield, Energy Budget, And Economic Return, Bülent Uzun, Engi̇n Yol, Şeymus Furat, Mehmet Topakci, Murad Çanakci, Davut Karayel
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Field experiments were carried out to assess the effects of different tillage practices on second crop sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) after wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) during the growing seasons of 2008 and 2009 in Aksu, Antalya, Turkey. The experimental design included no-till sowing into wet soil (NTW), no-till sowing into dry soil (NTD), reduced tillage (RT), and conventional tillage (CT) with 3 registered sesame cultivars, Muganli-57, Gölmarmara, and Özberk. In the no-till methods, the field was passed over only once for planting, which was directly performed into soil with stubble. In the RT method, the soil was not inverted and …

Effect Of Wetted Soil Area On Trunk Growth, Yield, And Fruit Quality Of Drip-Irrigated Sour Cherry Trees, Osman Yildirim, Hati̇ce Dumanoğlu, Nurdan Güneş, Murat Yildirim, Ahmet Aygün, Beki̇r Şan
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The effect of wetted soil area on trunk growth, yield, and fruit quality in drip-irrigated Kütahya sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) trees grafted on mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb L.) seedlings was investigated over 3 seasons in a semiarid zone of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Percentages of wetted soil area ranging from 8.8% to 35.6% were obtained by applying 7 treatments consisting of 1 or 2 lateral drip lines per tree row and various dripper numbers per tree. Adequate irrigation was applied to all treatments based on daily evapotranspiration values estimated by the FAO-modified Penman-Monteith equation. The highest yield was generally obtained at …

Liquid Atomization And Spray Drift Measurement In A Wind Tunnel For A Twin Fluid System With A Deflector Nozzle, Zoltán Gulyás, László Fenyvesi, Sándor Szoboszlay
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The objectives of this research were to inspect the drop production of a twin fluid system with the Floodjet TK SS 10 042 deflector nozzle and to identify the drift of the droplets produced by the nozzle in a wind tunnel when using the nozzle with the individual settings provided by the company that enlisted our institute to do the described research task. The results of the inspection of drop production, done using a particle sizer, showed that the values of volume diameter D_{v10} were low, the percentage of drops smaller than 100 µm in size was considerable, and the …
Influence Of Eccentric Drawbar Force On Power Delivery Efficiency Of A Wheeled Tractor, Mirko Simikic, Nebojsa Dedovic, Lazar Savin, Milan Tomic, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Si̇lleli̇, Ondrej Ponjican
Influence Of Eccentric Drawbar Force On Power Delivery Efficiency Of A Wheeled Tractor, Mirko Simikic, Nebojsa Dedovic, Lazar Savin, Milan Tomic, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Si̇lleli̇, Ondrej Ponjican
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Power delivery efficiency shows how much engine power is used for a tractor drawbar. Eccentric traction is a factor influencing the power delivery efficiency of a wheeled tractor. It occurs as a consequence of the offset position of a tractor implement, that is, when the traction line of the tractor and resistance line of the implement are parallel and do not coincide. This paper presents research on the power delivery efficiency of wheeled tractors and its dependence on wheel slippage of central and eccentric drawbar forces on unplowed and plowed stubble. For this purpose, mathematical models and one algorithm were …
Asking School Psychologists How Job Satisfaction Can Be Increased, Justin S. Janssen
Asking School Psychologists How Job Satisfaction Can Be Increased, Justin S. Janssen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
School psychology faces retention issues due to a current and projected shortage of school psychologists and the large number of baby boomers getting ready to retire. Meeting this need becomes vital in order to prevent negative effects of the shortage from continuing. Research has supported a link between job satisfaction and retention in the school psychology research as well as in job satisfaction research in general. Much of the current literature on the job satisfaction of school psychologists, however, focuses only on the identification of correlates with job satisfaction and largely avoids asking practitioners how their job satisfaction can be …

This study examined educators from five unique communities who recently implemented the program. Four key questions guided the research and became the focus during semi-structured purposive interviews. (1) What was the relationship between Second Chance Reading teachers and principal leadership? (2) What leadership qualities were necessary to support Second Chance Reading teachers? (3) What barriers were preventing teachers from accomplishing their …
Unusual Anal Atresia In A Lamb, Siavash Ahmadi Noorbakhsh
Unusual Anal Atresia In A Lamb, Siavash Ahmadi Noorbakhsh
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The first report of an unusual anal atresia with growth of ectodermal organs (wool and skin) in the shape of the intestine inside the body is provided here. During reconstructive surgery, a rectum-like structure was noted, in which wool strands grew densely. A hypothetical mechanism by which this structure formed is presented on the basis of local alterations in fetal tissue proliferation and rate of development.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Medicinal plants, especially rich in polyphenolic compounds, have been suggested to be chemopreventive on account of antioxidative properties. Salvia officinalis L., an aromatic and medicinal plant, is widely used in folk medicine and is well known for its antioxidant properties. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the antioxidative, possible genotoxic, and antigenotoxic potency of S. officinalis extract against cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced oxidative stress and genotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. Animals were orally dosed with S. officinalis extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg body weight) for 7 days before the administration of a single intraperitoneal dose of CYP (40 mg/kg …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Using Jining Grey goat ear marginal tissues as experimental materials, we succeeded in establishing a fibroblast cell bank, including 32 samples, by means of a primary explant and cryopreservation technique. The results from the biological analysis suggested that the population doubling time of the cell line was approximately 48 h. The diploid accounted for 98.35%, the isozyme analysis of the lactic dehydrogenase and malic dehydrogenase disproved cross contamination, and the results of the bacterium, fungi, virus, and mycoplasma detection tests were all negative. The transfection rates of 3 fluorescent protein genes were high, which supported the opinion that exogenous genes …
Transcendentalism’S Advocacy And Perpetuation Of Capitalist Ideology : The Physical And Spiritual Profitability Of Henry David Thoreau, Geoffrey D. Borshof
Transcendentalism’S Advocacy And Perpetuation Of Capitalist Ideology : The Physical And Spiritual Profitability Of Henry David Thoreau, Geoffrey D. Borshof
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Henry David Thoreau is often perceived as a naturalist, a minimalist, and an anti-capitalist. However, more in-depth readings of Walden reveal numerous fundamental similarities between Transcendentalism and Capitalism. This thesis argues that Henry David Thoreau did in fact advocate a capitalist agenda not merely through his texts, but his lifestyle as well.
Much of Thoreau scholarship places an emphasis on several fundamental points including individualism, the right to ownership, support of the abolitionist movement, frugality, and Thoreau's experience as an inventor and engineer. By examining these values and exploring the foundation of Capitalism through readings of Adam Smith's A Wealth …
Open Access To Legal Scholarship: Dropping The Barriers To Discourse And Dialogue, Richard A. Danner
Open Access To Legal Scholarship: Dropping The Barriers To Discourse And Dialogue, Richard A. Danner
Faculty Scholarship
This article focuses on the importance of free and open access to legal scholarship and commentary on the law. It argues that full understanding of authoritative legal texts requires access to informed commentary as well as to the texts of the law themselves, and that free and open access to legal commentary will facilitate cross-border dialogue and foster international discourse in law. The paper discusses the obligations of scholars and publishers of legal commentary to make their work as widely accessible as possible. Examples of institutional and disciplinary repositories for legal scholarship are presented, as are the possible impacts of …
Aggregation And Constitutional Rights, Brandon L. Garrett
Aggregation And Constitutional Rights, Brandon L. Garrett
Faculty Scholarship
Constitutional rights can impact large groups, yet most plaintiffs in civil rights cases bring individual claims. Critics of the Supreme Court’s decisions regarding class actions, such as the decision last Term in Dukes v. Wal-Mart, have argued that the Court is generally limiting the ability of plaintiffs to bring class actions through procedural limitations, such as the Wal-Mart Court’s heightening of the commonality requirement. I trace the problem deeper into the substance of constitutional doctrine. The Court has defined certain constitutional rights to require highly individualized inquiries. For example, Fourth Amendment excessive force claims, the bread and butter of constitutional …
The Evolution Of Contractual Terms In Sovereign Bonds, Stephen J. Choi, Mitu Gulati, Eric A. Posner
The Evolution Of Contractual Terms In Sovereign Bonds, Stephen J. Choi, Mitu Gulati, Eric A. Posner
Faculty Scholarship
In reaction to defaults on sovereign debt contracts, issuers and creditors have strengthened the terms in sovereign debt contracts that enable creditors to enforce their debts judicially and that enable sovereigns to restructure their debts. These apparently contradictory approaches reflect attempts to solve an incomplete contracting problem in which debtors need to be forced to repay debts in good states of the world; debtors need to be granted partial relief from debt payments in bad states; debtors may attempt to exploit divisions among creditors in order to opportunistically reduce their debt burden; debtors may engage in excessively risky activities using …
Making Sense Of Intellectual Property Law, Christopher Buccafusco
Making Sense Of Intellectual Property Law, Christopher Buccafusco
Faculty Scholarship
Intellectual property (IP) scholars have long struggled to explain the boundaries of and differences between copyright and patent law. This Article proposes a novel explanation: copyright and patent can be fruitfully understood as establishing a dichotomy between the different human senses. Copyright has bracketed works addressed to the senses of sight and hearing, and it treats products appealing to touch, taste, and smell as functional and, thus, uncopyrightable. To the extent the latter receive IP protection, it is through the utility patent regime. The Article begins by establishing this descriptive proposition, and it shows how some of the most contested …

Transplanting The European Court Of Justice: The Experience Of The Andean Tribunal Of Justice, Laurence R. Helfer, Karen J. Alter, Osvaldo Saldias
Transplanting The European Court Of Justice: The Experience Of The Andean Tribunal Of Justice, Laurence R. Helfer, Karen J. Alter, Osvaldo Saldias
Faculty Scholarship
Although there is an extensive literature on domestic legal transplants, far less is known about the transplantation of supranational judicial bodies. The Andean Tribunal of Justice (ATJ) is one of eleven copies of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), and the third most active international court. This article considers the origins and evolution of the ATJ as a transplanted judicial institution. It first reviews the literatures on legal transplants, neofunctionalist theory, and the spread of European ideas and institutions, explaining how the intersection of these literatures informs the study of supranational judicial transplants. The article next explains why the Andean …
Engineering An Orderly Greek Debt Restructuring, Mitu Gulati, Jeromin Zettelmeyer
Engineering An Orderly Greek Debt Restructuring, Mitu Gulati, Jeromin Zettelmeyer
Faculty Scholarship
For some months now, discussions over how Greece will restructure its debt have been constrained by the requirement that the deal be “voluntary” – implying that Greece would continue debt service to any creditors that choose retain their old bonds rather than tender them in an exchange offer. In light of Greece’s deep solvency problems and lack of agreement with its creditors so far, the notion of a voluntary debt exchange is increasingly looking like a mirage. In this essay, we describe and compare three alternative approaches that would achieve an orderly restructuring but avoid an outright default: (1) “retrofitting” …
Regulating Shadow Banking, Steven L. Schwarcz
Regulating Shadow Banking, Steven L. Schwarcz
Faculty Scholarship
Inaugural Address for Boston University Review of Banking & Financial Law's Inaugural Symposium: “Shadow Banking” February 24, 2012.
Although shadow banking is said to be huge, estimated at over $60 trillion, it is not well defined. This short and accessible paper attempts to define shadow banking by identifying its overall scope and its basic characteristics. Based on the definition derived, the paper also conceptually examines how shadow banking can be regulated to try to maximize its efficiencies while minimizing its risks.
The Organization For Economic Cooperation And Development’S Role In International Law, James Salzman
The Organization For Economic Cooperation And Development’S Role In International Law, James Salzman
Faculty Scholarship
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has played, and continues to play, an important and largely unrecognized role as a lawmaking body. The OECD occupies a unique space in the international lawmaking field, in large part because it was not established with lawmaking as a priority. In a small number of cases, however, it has played a significant role in crafting the emerging architecture of global governance. Case studies of the hazardous waste trade, the Bribery Convention, and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are presented to demonstrate a clear pattern. A topic of major concern arises on …
Controlling Financial Chaos: The Power And Limits Of Law, Steven L. Schwarcz
Controlling Financial Chaos: The Power And Limits Of Law, Steven L. Schwarcz
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay examines how law can help to control financial chaos. To that end, regulation should strive to not only maximize economic efficiency within the financial system but also protect the financial system itself. Any regulatory framework for achieving these goals, however, will be imperfect and have tradeoffs. Increasing financial complexity has created information failures that even disclosure cannot remedy, whereas law-imposed standardization would have its own flaws. Bounded human rationality limits the effectiveness of even otherwise ideal laws. Furthermore, the increasing dispersion of financial risk is undermining monitoring incentives. We also do not yet fully understand how systemic risk …
