Numerical Modeling Of Mobile Bay, Tate O. Mcalpin Dec 2012

Numerical Modeling Of Mobile Bay, Tate O. Mcalpin

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical model was developed for the Mobile Bay system to investigate the impacts associated with certain system alterations. The Adaptive Hydraulics (AdH) Code was used to validate the numerical model for hydrodynamics and transport. Due to the physics based nature of the AdH numerical model, the validated model could be altered to represent the plan conditions (removal of the Mobile Bay Causeway). Comparisons of the base and plan model results indicate the impacts of removing the causeway are not widespread and are primarily limited to Chocolatta Bay and the areas adjacent to the causeway. The model results suggest an …

An Object-Oriented Analysis For Characterizing The Rainfall-Induced Shallow Landslide, Kuan-Tsung Chang, Jin-King Liu, Chu-I Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Landslides are natural phenomena for the dynamic balance of the earth's surface. Because of frequent occurrences of typhoons and earthquakes in Taiwan, mass movements are common threats to people's lives. In this paper, the interpretation of knowledge is quantified as recognition criteria. Multisource high-resolution data, for example, a SPOT satellite image, 20 m × 20 m Digital Terrain Model (DTM) reduced from Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data, and aerial orthophotos were used to construct the feature space for landslide analysis. Landslides were recognized by an objectoriented method combining edge-based segmentation and a Supported Vector Machine (SVM) method. The classification …

Spatial Error Metrics And Registration For The Validation Of Numerical Oceanographic Models, Sean B. Ziegeler Dec 2012

Spatial Error Metrics And Registration For The Validation Of Numerical Oceanographic Models, Sean B. Ziegeler

Theses and Dissertations

Numerical oceanographic models are constantly improving and must be validated when improvements are made. One means of determining how to improve these models and performing validations is to compare model predictions to the future observed outcome, which is measured many ways, including satellite imagery. Comparisons of model forecasts to future satellite images result in error measurements. One common problem with modern oceanographic models is spatial error, i.e., the incorrect placement and shape of ocean features, rendering traditional error metrics such as mean-square and cross-correlation ineffective. Such problems are common in meteorological forecast verification as well, so the application of spatial …

Investigation Of Compaction And Corresponding Thermal Measurement Techniques For Cementitiously Stabilized Soils, W Griffin Sullivan

Theses and Dissertations

Cementitiously stabilized soils or soil-cement is a commonly used solution for highway subbase and base course construction, particularly in regions where higher quality soils and aggregates are limited. Even though the utilization of soil-cement as an engineered material has been around for over 70 years, there is still room for advancement with respect to characterizing the performance of these mixtures both in the laboratory and in the field. The first objective of this thesis was to examine the Mississippi Department of Transportation soil-cement database to determine current soil-cement practices in Mississippi. The second objective of this thesis was to develop …

Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria Dec 2012

Blow-Up Of Solutions To The Generalized Inviscid Proudman-Johnson Equation, Alejandro Sarria

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The generalized inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation serves as a model for n-dimensional incompressible Euler flow, gas dynamics, high-frequency waves in shallow waters, and orientation of waves in a massive director field of a nematic liquid crystal. Furthermore, the equation also serves as a tool for studying the role that the natural fluid processes of convection and stretching play in the formation of spontaneous singularities, or of their absence.

In this work, we study blow-up, and blow-up properties, in solutions to the generalized, inviscid Proudman-Johnson equation endowed with periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. More particularly, regularity of solutions in an Lp setting will …

Automatic Object Recognition And Registration Of Dynamic Heavy Equipment Using A Hybrid Ladar System, Mengmeng Gai

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

It has been a challenging subject to recognize dynamic objects from a scattered work environment because large and complex 3D site data obtained by a laser scanner makes it difficult to process itself in real or near real time. This thesis introduces a model-based automatic object recognition and registration framework, Projection-Recognition-Projection (PRP), to assist heavy equipment operators in rapidly perceiving 3D working environment at dynamic construction sites. In this study, a digital camera and a hybrid laser scanner were used to rapidly recognize and register dynamic target objects in a 3D space by separating target object’s point cloud data from …

Rainwater Utilization To Reduce Flooding In Low-Lying Areas Of Taipei City, Taiwan, Andrew Lo Dec 2012

Rainwater Utilization To Reduce Flooding In Low-Lying Areas Of Taipei City, Taiwan, Andrew Lo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

She-Zih is a low-lying area in Taipei City where the Tanshui River and Keelung River meet. Average elevation is about 2.5 m. Perennial flood events occur very often. The only flood prevention facility is the 6 m levee built around the perimeter to overcome 20-yr flood events. The main cause of the flooding problem is the instantaneous extreme high rainfall events that often exceed the drainage capacity of She-Zih. Current solutions to relieve this water hazard, suggested by the Water Resources Agency, include channel widening and many water pumping installations. At present, all emergency facilities are insufficient to combat unexpected …

The Failures Of Intelligence Reform, Amber Ciemniewski Dec 2012

The Failures Of Intelligence Reform, Amber Ciemniewski

Honors Theses

Intelligence reform is the legislation implemented by the federal government that's purpose is to improve the effectiveness and success of the intelligence community. It would seem evident that intelligence reform has failed, but the more important questions lie in where it has failed and how to fix it. In this thesis, it will be argued that reform attempts have failed by focusing on surface problems rather than addressing their sources. Future reforms should focus on the relationship dynamic between the intelligence community and the policymakers it serves. There has been extensive literature published on the problems in the intelligence community …

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina Dec 2012

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Signal Processing For Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Operating Shallow Water, Patricia E. Giardina

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the research was to develop best practices for image signal processing method for InSAS systems for bathymetric height determination. Improvements over existing techniques comes from the fusion of Chirp-Scaling a phase preserving beamforming techniques to form a SAS image, an interferometric Vernier method to unwrap the phase; and confirming the direction of arrival with the MUltiple SIgnal Channel (MUSIC) estimation technique. The fusion of Chirp-Scaling, Vernier, and MUSIC lead to the stability in the bathymetric height measurement, and improvements in resolution. This method is computationally faster, and used less memory then existing techniques.
