Evaluation Of A Novel Means To Euthanize Piglets, Richelle Lorraine Miller

Research was conducted to evaluate a novel means to euthanize piglets utilizing electromagnetic energy. Experiment 1 assessed if electromagnetic energy could result in a euthanized piglet and Experiment 2 evaluated states of consciousness of piglets. During Experiment 1, six piglets were exposed to 40 seconds of electromagnetic energy (EME). Respiration rate was reduced to zero in each piglet immediately following EME and unassisted death occurred after heart rate ceased within 4.8 minutes after EME in five of the six piglets. Treatments during Experiment 2 included EME for 3, 6, or 9 seconds. State of consciousness and treatment interaction affected (P < 0.01) electroencephalogram amplitude and power. State of consciousness affected (P < 0.01) electroencephalogram frequency and heart rate. Treatment and EME interaction also affected internal body and head surface temperatures (P < 0.01). Piglets exposed to 9 seconds EME had higher (P < 0.01) body temperature compared with other treatments.

By definition, borders lie on the edges. This project investigates the spatial implications of politically defined borders, and the effects that these materializations have in the context of urban space and the movement through and/or around them. Borderwalk transforms the border into a center, and creates junctures rather than limits. It resurrects the forgotten landscape held captive between the two existing border walls and elevates it. It is served by a light rail transit system and introduces multiple new crossing points, it seeks to facilitate movement and dialogue. This study was initiated to better understand the role of WSOC in the process of sequestering carbon in mixed species grassland as compared to cropland systems. Previously established mixed-species grassland plot sites near Kindred (Ekre Ranch), Carrington and Dickinson, ND were evaluated for differences in WSOC due to species, species richness, fertility management and/or harvest management. Soils were extracted with a 1:2 (w/v) soil:deionized water solution to determine WSOC. Analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer HSD were used to determine if individual species, species richness, harvest frequency, and fertilizer application affected WSOC. The requirements for brewing beer from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) malt are specific and unique for each brewer. Anheuser-Busch InBev and Miller Coors Brewing Company (MillerCoors) are two major brewers in the United States that target different malt quality profiles for six-rowed barley malt. Two closely related cultivars developed by the University of Minnesota, Robust and Stander, differ greatly in agronomic and malt quality performance. Robust malt fits the requirements of MillerCoors and Stander malt has many of the parameters desired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. An initial experiment was conducted using semolina and durum flour fortified with nontraditional ingredients (soy flour or oat flour, 10% w/w) and xanthan, guar or locust bean gums (2% w/w). Nitrogen fertilizers are extensively used to enhance the growth of biomass crops. This study was conducted to determine the effect of N rates on the biomass yield and quality, and N uptake of several crops. The experiment was conducted at Fargo and Prosper, ND, in 2010 and 2011. The crops studied were forage sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor L. Sandwiched between the account of Saul’s conversion in Acts 9 and Peter’s vision of the Gentiles in Acts 10 is the story of the raising of Tabitha. While staying in the town of Lydda, Peter, the presiding disciple of Christ, is approached by two individuals from the neighboring city of Joppa with the request that he come and attend to the then-deceased Tabitha. This essay analyzes the Hyers Sisters, a Reconstruction-era African American sister act, and their radical efforts to transcend social limits of gender, class, and race in their early concert careers and three major productions, Out of Bondage and Peculiar Sam, or The Underground Railroad, two slavery-to-freedom epics, and Urlina, the African Princess, the first known African American play set in Africa. The events surrounding Christ’s theophany as recounted in 3 Nephi describe the creation of a new world, both physically and socially. In particular, chapters 8–18 depict a series of events that are reminiscent of the creation of the earth as described in Genesis and elsewhere. From the all-pervasive darkness experienced during the cataclysmic destruction to the glorious, light-filled arrival of Christ and the institution of new laws and ordinances delivered during his first day among the people, the Book of Mormon text reflects this biblical narrative. Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), caused by the fungal pathogen Cercospora beticola, is the most important foliar disease of sugar beet worldwide. Control strategies for CLS rely heavily on fungicides including quinone outside inhibitor (QOI) fungicides. We collected 866 C. beticola isolates from sugar beet growing regions in France and Italy and assessed their sensitivity to the QOI fungicide pyraclostrobin. To gain an understanding of the molecular basis of QOI resistance, we cloned the full-length coding region of Cbcytb. All tested QOI-resistant isolates harbored a point mutation in Cbcytb at nucleotide position 428 that conferred an exchange from glycine to alanine …

Few studies have focused on student therapists' beliefs about bisexual clients and the impact of affirmative training on these beliefs. The current study explored 1) the level of experience couple and family therapy (CFT) students have with gay, lesbian and bisexual clients; 2) whether CFT students' levels of biphobia and homophobia differ; and 3) whether LGB affirmative training had an impact on self-reported levels of biphobia. The purpose of this study was to examine the religious and spiritual experiences of transgender people. The study used an existing data set consisting of interviews from five self-identified Christian transgender participants, of which 1 was female-to-male, and 4 were male-to-female. Feminist phenomenology guided all aspects of this project. The results of the study suggest that participants felt a connection with a higher power, and specifically viewed themselves as made as transgender by God. This study examined the relationships between neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), measured by free and reduced school lunch rates, the nutrition environment. In the first part of this study trained surveyors used the Nutrition Environment Measure Survey-Stores (NEMS-S) to document availability of healthy food items in sixty retail food stores (96% of total community retail food stores) categorized as `ethnic grocery', `supermarkets', and `convenience'. Community neighborhoods were divided by elementary school district, allowing neighborhood SES to be determined by the percentage of free and reduced price lunch provided to students and are thus grouped as high or low SES neighborhoods. In this study, we evaluated the development of stress response in (1) two different species of quail, one species that is relatively fast-growing (Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica) and one that is relatively slow-growing (Gambel’s quail, Callipepla gambelii) and (2) two strains of a single species, the Japanese quail (wild-type and domesticated), that differ considerably in final size. Our data indicate that wild-type Japanese quail and Gambel’s quail have experienced trade-offs between growth and the stress response (e.g. Gambel’s quail have slower growth rates, but greater levels of CORT). Ascochyta blight is the most common disease of economic importance in peas (Pisum sativum L.) in North Dakota. Selection based on molecular markers would greatly facilitate identification of resistant varieties. A mapping population comprised of 394 F7-derived recombinant inbred line (RILs) and derived from the cross `Lifter'/'Radley' was developed to study resistance to Ascochyta blight. A genetic map was developed based on 179 loci including SSR, RAPD, and CAPS markers, distributed on seven linkage groups. Native yellow pea (Pisum sativum) protein isolates (PPIs) showed good foaming and emulsifying properties but a poor gelling characteristic. However, this can be corrected by Transglutaminase (TGase) treatment. PPIs were obtained using alkaline extraction method in which extracting pH, precipitating pH, flour–to–water ratio, and extraction time were optimized to obtain maximum yields and least change in protein functionalities. Extraction pH of 10.0, precipitating pH of 4.3, flour–to–water ratio of 1:6, and 30 minute extraction time were found to be optimum values for pea protein extraction. This research uses the technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) framework as a lens for understanding howteacher candidates make decisions about the use of information and communication technology in their teaching. Pre- and post-treatment assessments required elementary teacher candidates at Brigham Young University to articulate how and why they would integrate technology in three content teaching design tasks. Researchers identified themes from student rationales that mapped to the TPACK constructs. Rationales simultaneously supported subcategories of knowledge that could be helpful to other researchers trying to understand and measure TPACK. Strategic performance measurement systems operationalize firm strategy with a set of performance measures. A consequence of such alignment is the tendency for managers to lose sight of the strategic construct(s) the measures are intended to represent, and subsequently act as though the measures are the constructs of interest, a phenomenon referred to as surrogation. We investigate how involvement in strategy selection affects managers’ propensity to exhibit surrogation. We predict and find that strategy selection reduces surrogation. Surprisingly, we do not find that engaging in strategy deliberation, a key process underlying strategy selection, reduces surrogation. Thus, managers’ involvement in the actual …

Over the years, numerous approaches have been used to rank IS journals, approaches such as citation metrics, school lists, acceptance rates, and expert assessments. Building on the principles of philosophical hermeneutics, Ricoeur (1984) used the concept of narrative to explain how individuals interpret their experiences and make sense of seemingly disconnected elements of life by turning them into the stories. Narrative identities represent the coming together of the stories individuals tell, as well as those told about them by collectivities and by others (Bruner, 1986; Kearney, 2002). These ideas prove particularly relevant to literacy studies because identity influences how individuals make sense of their experiences, including their interactions with texts (McCarthey & Moje, 2000).
