This paper examines the latest developments in feminist critiques of the seminal Theory of Justice, written by John Rawls, the late preeminent American moral philosopher. Rawls is recognized as one of the most influential moral political philosophers of the twentieth century and is increasingly relevant because of his discussions on pluralist societies. With the current diverging of liberal, conservative and libertarian philosophies among Americans, as well as the fragmentation of parties to accommodate an increasingly diverse public, a clear philosophy and understanding of liberal theory is necessary for its future in American politics. The goal of this organization is to enact change in the educational system by overcoming tradition and creating a feedback loop of reform. To achieve their goal, the organization will raise money to support programs that otherwise would not receive a lot of funding; they hope to promote support for schools in the community, and intend to encourage others to follow their example. This theoretical thesis is a multilayered study that interrogates Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) policies from many angles: 1) a deconstruction of the legislation itself (logistics, stipulations, restrictions and enforcement); 2) the impact such policies have on individuals who are required to register; 3) the impact on communities in creating public spaces that are increasingly policed and thereby adding to the expansion of the prison industrial complex; 4) the implications and effectiveness sex offender registries (SORs) have in preventing sexually predatory behavior and acts of sexual violence; and 5) the implicit values and beliefs underlying hegemonic U.S. discourse surrounding …

This historical study looks at medical, psychological and psychiatric descriptions of nostalgia as a pathological condition. By conducting a historical analysis on the medical nosology that addresses this clinical phenomenon from the years 1688-2011, this paper examines the conceptual shift of nostalgia from a medical disease to a psychopathological condition and, ultimately, how it is explained within psychoanalytic literature. In examining the way that nostalgia has been described within psychoanalytic literature, specifically from the years 1950- 2011, this study demonstrates that nostalgia continues to be understood as a psychopathological condition, primarily affiliated with minority groups and displaced persons. Parenting coordination is an innovative alternative dispute resolution process that assists separating or divorced parents who are deadlocked in high levels of conflict. The primary aim of this process is to reduce conflict between parents in order to support healthier child adjustment. Parenting coordinators (PCs) assist parents in disengaging from their couple relationship and replacing it with a co-parenting relationship that enables them to continue to effectively parent their children in a cooperative, if not a coordinated, fashion. Sexual assault is a pervasive problem that many college women face. This study explores the gendered communication patterns employed by men and women prior to, during, and after instances of heterosexual sexual assault on New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) college campuses. It was hypothesized that gender plays a role in instances of sexual assault in that norms of masculinity and femininity influence the communication employed by men and women, with women's voices being silenced, muted, and ignored and men's voices being assertive and dominant. "I'M Not Done In Any Way" : An Exploratory Study Of College-Educated Women At Late Midlife, Diana Giglio

This qualitative study explores the commonalities in the life experiences of a small sample of women in late middle age. Twelve college-educated women, ages 55 to 68, from two northeastern states, responded to open-ended interview questions and produced narratives of their lives in relation to self, family, work, and significant relationships. Changes the women have perceived in themselves over the course of their adult lives were explored, including the influence of age-related physical changes. The narratives also show how social movements of the 1960s and early 1970s influenced these women's lives. The findings suggest an increase in self-confidence and an …

An increasing number of therapists are turning to body-oriented practices in response to the perceived shortcomings of talk therapy. Although the literature on individual approaches to body-oriented therapy is growing, we currently know very little about how clinicians are adapting these models to group psychotherapy. Using a grounded theory methodology, this study explores the experiences of fifteen clinicians who have integrated body-oriented practices into interpersonal group therapy. I analyzed data from 40-60 minute telephone interviews through an iterative process of open and focused coding using the constant comparative method. STAT5B, a specific member of the ST AT family, is intimately associated with prostate tumor progression. While the full form of STAT5B is thought to promote tumor progression, a naturally occurring truncated isoform acts as a tumor suppressor. We previously demonstrated that truncated STAT5 is generated by insertion of an alternatively spliced exon and results in the introduction of an early termination codon. Present approaches targeting ST AT proteins based on inhibition of functional domains of STAT's, such as DNA-binding, cooperative binding (protein-protein interaction), dimerization and phosphorylation will halt the action of the entire gene, both the proto-oncogenic and tumor …

This paper looks at the recent history of allocation of exclusive franchise or limited franchise casino licenses in jurisdictions throughout the world and comments on their strengths and weaknesses as well as successes and failures of various strategies that have been undertaken. The paper then examines the Kansas legalization and bidding process that emerged between 2007 and 2009 as a case study in evaluating the effectiveness of various principles that had emerged via the legislation and subsequent procedural decisions. Estimating The Effect Of The 2003 Gaming Tax Restructuring On Riverboat Gaming Volume, Mikael Ahlgren, Michael C. Dalbor, Ashok Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper analyzes the effect of the 2003 Illinois gaming tax increase on gaming demand. To model gaming demand, slot machine coin-in is chosen for the period January 2000 to December 2006. Multiple regression analysis is used to model both the tax increase and account for seasonality in the data. A Box Jenkins model was employed to address correlation of error terms. The findings reveal that Illinois experienced a decrease in gaming demand when the tax increases took effect. The findings indicate that legislators should acknowledge and evaluate the negative economic pressures tax increases have on the gaming industry.

Gambling Windfall Decisions: Lottery Winners And Employment Behavior, Bengt Furaker, Anna Hedenus

Based on a 2005 survey among Swedish lottery winners, the article throws new light on what those receiving a sudden windfall do with their existing jobs. Many may continue to work as before the winning, but others may alter their work situation in one way or another. We focus on three possible changes: (i) quitting the job; (ii) going on unpaid full-time leave; and (iii) shortening one's working hours. In our study less than 12% quit working, approximately 24% took unpaid full-time leave, 16% reduced their working hours, but 62% did not make any of these changes. In other words, …

Toward Legalization Of Poker: The Skill Vs. Chance Debate, Robert C. Hannum, Anthony N. Cabot

This paper sheds light on the age-old argument as to whether poker is a game in which skill predominates over chance or vice versa. Recent work addressing the issue of skill vs. chance is reviewed. This current study considers two different scenarios to address the issue: 1) a mathematical analysis supported by computer simulations of one random player and one skilled player in Texas Hold'Em, and 2) full-table simulation games of Texas Hold'Em and Seven Card Stud. Findings for scenario 1 showed the skilled player winning 97 percent of the hands. Findings for scenario 2 further reinforced that highly skilled …

Gambling behaviors in current athletes, former athletes and non-athletes were examined. Gambling tendencies were determined from participants' responses on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A delayed competitive effect among athletes that might surface in the form of pathological gambling was investigated. To test this novel theory, participants were divided into three groups: athletes who are currently playing sports, former athletes who used to play competitive sports and non-athletes who have never participated in competitive sporting events. In his acclaimed 2000 book Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam documents a disturbing social trend of the broadest kind. Putnam cites a wide variety of data that indicate that over the past fifty years, Americans have become increasingly socially disengaged. In developing this theme, Putnam specifically cites the increase in casino gambling (and especially machine gambling) as evidence in support of his argument. Building on the empirical and theoretical work of Putnam, this exploratory article examines the subphenomenon of "gambling alone" by exploring sample survey data on solitary and social gambling behavior among adults who reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. Indian casino operators have been seeking ways to operate Nevada style table games within existing laws. Under the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, those casinos that do not have compacts with their states are permitted to operate only Class II gaming operations. In order to enable such casinos to operate table card games which are not backed by the casino, players' pools have evolved in which gaming wins are backed by the players themselves. The leader as the moral agent can be both a singular and a collective entity. Regardless, that individual or group of individuals must establish and live by a moral paradigm where self-respect and respect for co-workers is paramount. In essence, the moral agent must "lead by example." And it is not simply sufficient to choose the correct pathway but to care about choosing the correct pathway, stripping the decision-making process of disingenuous or superficial motives and injecting heart, concern, and passion for doing what is right.
