The Foliar Nematode Aphelenchoides Fragariae: Studies On Facultative Feeding And Desiccation Tolerance, Zhen Fu May 2012

The Foliar Nematode Aphelenchoides Fragariae: Studies On Facultative Feeding And Desiccation Tolerance, Zhen Fu

All Dissertations

The foliar nematode Aphelenchoides fragariae is an economically important and frequent pest of ornamental crops. In nurseries and landscapes in the United States, foliar nematodes can be a serious problem affecting hostas (Hosta spp.), a common perennial ornamental plant that thrives in shady environments. Fundamental research on the biology and ecology of this nematode provides the basis for development of sound management strategies. The general objective of this dissertation was to study two behaviors that make foliar nematodes very successful as plant pests: desiccation tolerance and alternative feeding on fungi (or facultative feeding on the plant). To study the molecular …

Biology, Histopathology, And Improvements In Axenic Culture Of Labyrinthula Terrestris, Causal Agent Of Rapid Blight Of Cool-Season Turfgrasses, Kirthi Kiran Yadagiri

All Dissertations

Rapid blight is a disease of cool-season turfgrasses caused by Labyrinthula terrestris. Disease symptoms include water-soaked lesions, yellowing and browning of foliage, and coalescing patches of dead turf. L. terrestris belongs to a group of marine microorganisms in the kingdom Chromista (also known as Stramenopila). Morphological characteristics of Labyrinthula spp. include spindle-shaped vegetative cells that move in an ectoplasmic network. The biology and pathology of L. terrestris is not clearly understood; therefore, the ultrastructure, life cycle, and histopathology of L. terrestris were investigated. In addition, improvements in axenic culture and long-term storage methods were made to better culture L. terrestris. …

Timing Of Exposure To Toxic Tall Fescue: Effects On Beef Cattle Reproduction, Matthew Burns May 2012

Timing Of Exposure To Toxic Tall Fescue: Effects On Beef Cattle Reproduction, Matthew Burns

All Dissertations

Tall fescue [Schedonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub] is a native grass of Europe and was not widely used in the U.S. until the early to mid 1900's. Toxic tall fescue (E+) is the predominate, cool-season forage used in beef cattle production in the southern U.S., but grazing this forage is known to negatively impact growth and may impair reproductive performance. Two- and 3-yr old (young) beef cattle respond differently to synchronization protocols and have higher energy requirements compared with mature cows under normal management conditions. Interestingly, limited data indicate that young cattle reproductive performance is negatively impacted to a greater extent …

Quantitative, Spatial Imaging Based Measurements To Assess Cellular Health And Oxygenation In A Tissue Engineered Test System, Erik Bland May 2012

Quantitative, Spatial Imaging Based Measurements To Assess Cellular Health And Oxygenation In A Tissue Engineered Test System, Erik Bland

All Dissertations

Three-dimensional in vitro tissue test systems are employed to examine cell behavior, test responses to drugs and vaccines, and answer basic biological questions. These systems are more physiologically relevant than two-dimensional cell cultures, and are more relevant, easier and less expensive to maintain than animal models. However, methods used to measure cell behavior and viability have been developed specifically for two-dimensional cell cultures or animal models, and are often not optimally translated to three-dimensional in vitro test systems. The purpose of this work was to aid in the development of three-dimensional, spatially controlled in vitro test systems, and to develop …

Assembly And Disassembly Of Myofibrils In Dissociated Cardiomyocytes, Honghai Liu May 2012

Assembly And Disassembly Of Myofibrils In Dissociated Cardiomyocytes, Honghai Liu

All Dissertations

Significance
1) We have developed a hybrid TPEF-SHG imaging system with an onstage incubator for long-term living-cell imaging. Using the imaging system, the assembly of myosin filaments onto the myofibrils can be investigated without fluorescently labeling the specific proteins, which enabled us to study the dynamic process of the assembly and dedifferentiation of myofibrils in living cardiomyocytes without labeling any sarcomeric proteins for long time.
2) We observed the addition of new sarcomeres during myofibrillogenesis while neonatal cardiomyocytes were spreading on the substrate for up to 10 hours under the customized TPEF-SHG imaging system. New-sarcomere addition at both the ends …

New Results In Multivariate Time Series With Applications, Nan Su May 2012

New Results In Multivariate Time Series With Applications, Nan Su

All Dissertations

This dissertation presents some new results in stationary multivariate time series.
The asymptotic properties of the sample autocovariance are established, that is, we derive a multivariate version of Bartlett's Classic Formula.
The estimation of the autocovariance function plays a crucial role in time series analysis,
in particular for the identification problem.
Explicit formula for vector autoregressive $(p)$ and vector moving average $(q)$ processes are presented as examples.
We also address linear processes driven by non-independent errors,
a feature that permits consideration of multivariate GARCH processes.
We next compare several techniques to discriminate
two multivariate stationary signals. The compared methods include …

Nanopillar Based Electrochemical Biosensor For Monitoring Microfluidic Based Cell Culture, Rajan Gangadharan May 2012

Nanopillar Based Electrochemical Biosensor For Monitoring Microfluidic Based Cell Culture, Rajan Gangadharan

All Dissertations

In-vitro assays using cultured cells have been widely performed for studying many aspects of cell biology and cell physiology. These assays also form the basis of cell based sensing. Presently, analysis procedures on cell cultures are done using techniques that are not integrated with the cell culture system. This approach makes continuous and real-time in-vitro measurements difficult. It is well known that the availability of continuous online measurements for extended periods of time will help provide a better understanding and will give better insight into cell physiological events.
With this motivation we developed a highly sensitive, selective and stable microfluidic …

Natural Barrier Assessment And Modeling For Fish Communities In Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Ross G. Andrew

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Natural barriers may play an important role in structure and composition of stream fish habitat. Determining the effects of natural barriers on fish communities is important for understanding ecological processes that may occur throughout barrier-affected habitats. Additionally, modeling the likelihood of natural barrier occurrence using spatial data can reduce survey effort in the field and make management of fisheries in barrier-affected systems more efficient. I surveyed 446 natural barriers within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area using a standardized field protocol to assess passability for fishes. I measured natural barriers individually based upon individual morphology and developed a scoring …

Efficacy Of Varying Rates Of Herbicide And Surfactant For The Control Of Understory Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus Orbiculatus Thunb.) Plants In An Appalachian Hardwood Forest, Terry L. Burhans Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is an invasive climbing, twining vine that can grow up into the forest canopy effectively inhibiting growth and light exposure on affected trees. A local landowner who had treated bittersweet with various rates of a glyphosate-based herbicide claimed that higher than recommended rates of herbicide were needed to effectively control the invasive plant. This study was established to assess the validity of this claim and to explore the interaction of glyphosate and surfactant effects on the efficacy of bittersweet control. The goal was to determine an ideal treatment of herbicide and surfactant rates for the effective …

A Density Functional Theory And Laser Flash Photolysis Investigation Of Carbofuran Photodegradation In Aqueous Medium, A. Atifi, M. Talipov, H. Mountacer, Michael D. Ryan, M. Sarakha May 2012

A Density Functional Theory And Laser Flash Photolysis Investigation Of Carbofuran Photodegradation In Aqueous Medium, A. Atifi, M. Talipov, H. Mountacer, Michael D. Ryan, M. Sarakha

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Density functional theory (DFT) approach was used to study the photodegradation of Carbofuran in aqueous medium. This computational method enables us to assign the electronic transitions and interpret the dissociative behavior upon irradiation based on a thermodynamical analysis of the bond dissociation energies (BDE) of Carbofuran. According to these calculations, phenoxy C---O bond appears weaker than the C---N bonds. Hence, it was predicted that the photodegradation of Carbofuran should occur with an initial homolytic dissociation of the C---O bond of the carbamate moiety. Laser Flash Photolysis (LFP) results clearly indicate the formation of the phenoxyl radical, which support the outcome …

Analyzing Tophets: Did The Phoenicians Practice Child Sacrifice?, Katelyn Dibenedetto May 2012

Analyzing Tophets: Did The Phoenicians Practice Child Sacrifice?, Katelyn Dibenedetto

Anthropology

This paper examines the controversies surrounding Phoenician religious practices and in particular, the Phoenician Tophet, a cemetery containing the cremated remains of infants and young children in clay jars. According to ancient Hebrew and Greek sources, in the ceremony known as mulk, the oldest son was placed on the arms of a bronze statue and dropped into a brazier below. Though these ancient authors were unanimous in criticizing Phoenician religious practices as cruel and savage, the use of these biased sources to conclude that child sacrifice did occur remains controversial. Both the Hebrew and Greek sources were xenophobic and furthermore, …

Perception Of Communication Training Need Among Pediatric Trauma Team Members, Monica M. Mercado

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this study is to use the APRC (Assessment of Pediatric Resuscitation Communication) as a guide to determine if trauma nurses and surgeons believe communication training is necessary. Many trauma team members have not received team communication effectiveness training in pediatric trauma settings. As a result, miscommunication between team members leads to medical errors during pediatric trauma activations. Thus, it is important to discover whether or not trauma team members believe communication training will help trauma teams improve the overall effectiveness of pediatric trauma activations. The present study provides a descriptive analysis that illustrates nurses’ and trauma surgeons’ …

Development Of An Assay To Screen For Novel Proteins From Bacillus Thuringiensis With Antibacterial Activity, Auriole T. Tamegnon

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces the non specific Cyt protein and the specific Cry protein. Past research has shown these proteins are toxic to insects, red blood cells, cancer cells, and some bacteria. While many antibacterial substances are known to exist, efforts to find new ones still continue. In this project we used Bt 6-2-56 (containing a novel filament associated parasporal body which appears non-toxic to insects and protozoan) and Bt 4Q13 (which has been shown to have activity against E. coli and S. aureus) to develop a simple, easy, scalable assay in a 96 well Microtitre plate to look for …

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed May 2012

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As the needle pierces the fabric, the thread finds its way. As the needle lays its rhythmic path, the thread follows the needle, creating a specific sound and pattern. The needle and the thread together create something new or mend something old. As an artist I have found my direction, and sensitivity, the same as the thread that finds its way by filling and tying the spaces between other threads in the fabric. As I draw the point through every stitch, I am drawing a thought, a moment, an expression from past and present. I seek a thread, a theme, …

Abd-A Regulation By The Iab-8 Noncoding Rna, Maheshwar Gummalla, Robert K. Maeda, Javier J. Castro Alvarez, Henrik Gyurkovics, Kevin A. Edwards, Swetha Singari, Welcome Bender

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

The homeotic genes in Drosophila melanogaster are aligned on the chromosome in the order of the body segments that they affect. The genes affecting the more posterior segments repress the more anterior genes. This posterior dominance rule must be qualified in the case of abdominal-A (abd-A) repression by Abdominal-B (Abd-B). Animals lacking Abd-B show ectopic expression of abd-A in the epidermis of the eighth abdominal segment, but not in the central nervous system. Repression in these neuronal cells is accomplished by a 92 kb noncoding RNA. This "iab-8 RNA" produces a micro RNA to repress abd-A, but also has a …

Disgust Sensitivity, Sexual Trauma History, And Female Sexual Functioning, Tara Mcgahan May 2012

Disgust Sensitivity, Sexual Trauma History, And Female Sexual Functioning, Tara Mcgahan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sexual dysfunctions are a common problem for women that negatively impact quality of life (Laumann, Paik, & Rosen 1999). A history of sexual trauma is associated with an increase in sexual difficulties (Neumann et al., 1996). One common reaction to unwanted sexual contact is disgust (Whealin & Barnett, 2010). However, the role of disgust in the relationship between sexual trauma and female sexual dysfunction has not been examined. This study explored how disgust and a history of sexual trauma related to different domains of sexual functioning (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain). Furthermore, this study assessed whether disgust mediated …

Early Season Population Dynamics And Residual Insecticide Effects On Bird Cherry-Oat Aphid, Rhopalosiphum Padi In Arkansas Winter Wheat, Beven Mcwilliams May 2012

Early Season Population Dynamics And Residual Insecticide Effects On Bird Cherry-Oat Aphid, Rhopalosiphum Padi In Arkansas Winter Wheat, Beven Mcwilliams

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Bird cherry-oat aphid is a common pest of Arkansas winter wheat. This aphid vectors barley yellow dwarf virus which may cause extensive crop damage and yield loss when wheat is infested by virulent aphids in the fall. Some suggest this damage may be avoided using insecticide seed treatments if growers are unable to delay planting, as is recommended. Field population dynamics of bird cherry-oat aphid during fall 2009 and 2010 was assessed through random sampling of whole plants and pan trapping methods to evaluate aphid immigration. The field plots were divided into four subplots treated with a systemic insecticide seed …

An Alternate Approach To Ecosystem Mapping: Fusing Orthophotography With Landsat Etm+ Data For A Object-Based Classification, South Eastern Arkansas., David Mcfee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining representative sampling of biologically rich and rare ecosystems has become an important means to preventing biodiversity loss. A limitation in indentifying and quantifying ecosystems is the cost of obtaining high resolution imagery necessary for a high resolution land cover assessment. This research shows how free, different resolution imagery (orthoimages and LANDSAT ETM+) could be combined to produce a hybrid dataset with enhanced spectral, spectral and temporal properties, and processed to obtain a object-based classification of land cover of bottomland and pine hardwood forest in south eastern Arkansas. Three classification techniques were evaluated: 1) a human derived, rule based method, …

Lameness Associated With A Possible Neural Problem In The Lower Spinal Cord Of Chickens, Gallus Gallus, Gurueswar Nagarajan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the second half of the twentieth century lameness in broiler chickens has been known to be caused by different types of disorders, however the etiology of several type of lameness remain unknown. Because of the intense selection of broilers for rapid growth, some birds are more prone to physiological insults resulting in lameness. This study focuses on possible neural problems in the lower spinal cord associated with lameness in broilers. Broilers were raised in pens with wire floors and provided with food and water ad libitum. Three groups of birds 1) birds displaying a normal gait (Controls), 2) lame …

Determining Multidimensional Gender: Development And Psychometrics Of A Measurement Instrument, Karyl Lounsbery May 2012

Determining Multidimensional Gender: Development And Psychometrics Of A Measurement Instrument, Karyl Lounsbery

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gender identity is often thought of only as a binary construct, masculine and feminine, despite the fact that there are many people who do not see themselves as fitting this dichotomy (Rochman, 2006). Within the counseling field, it is likely that every counselor will eventually see someone who will be struggling with issues of gender identity (Ehrensaft, 2011). The introduction of the Arkansas Multidimensional Gender Scale (AMGS) will show there is a much broader scope of gender identity, more in line with the idea that all gender identities are normal and that there are as many gender identities as there …

Genetic Analysis Of Chromosomal Regions Affecting Sperm Mobility In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Sharath Chandra Munnaluri

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project is focused on determining the contributions of particular genetic loci to low sperm mobility in the chicken. Sperm mobility has been shown to be a major determinant of male fertility in broiler breeders. A whole genome SNP scan identified chromosomal regions (QTLs) that control sperm mobility. I used microsatellites from 4 chromosomal regions ( 15.151 on chromosome 6, 12.435 on chromosome Z, 12.341 on chromosome Z, and 17.214 on chromosome Z) to determine the association of these regions with sperm mobility in experimental lines divergently selected for mobility phenotype. Determination of the genetics underlying sperm mobility will identify …

The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality In The Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman, Brooke Alexandra Shippee May 2012

The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality In The Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman, Brooke Alexandra Shippee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Androgynous Tomboy: Adolescent Liminality in the Contemporary Southern Bildungsroman is an analysis of the adolescent, specifically, of the young tomboy characters central to three Bildungsroman texts set in the American South during the twentieth century: Carson McCullers' The Member of the Wedding (1946), Bobbie Ann Mason's In Country (1985) and Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina (1993). I seek to challenge the very notion of the conventional tomboy within the coming of age literary genre by defining these youths as androgynous, rather than as young individuals who assume a singular gender opposite of their biological sex. Throughout my work, …
