Comparative Psychotherapy Outcomes Of Sexual Minority Clients And Controls, Sasha A. Mondragon
Comparative Psychotherapy Outcomes Of Sexual Minority Clients And Controls, Sasha A. Mondragon
Theses and Dissertations
Research examining the psychotherapy outcomes of sexual minority clients seen in routine clinical care is lacking. No studies could be identified in which sexual minority client outcomes were examined with a standardized measure. The pre-treatment mental health functioning of 600 sexual minority clients was compared with that of a randomly selected group matched to the minority group on male/female ratio. The post-treatment mental health functioning of 596 sexual minority clients was also examined and compared to a control group matched on female/male ratio, initial levels of mental health functioning, age, and marital status. Results indicated that sexual minority clients who …

Analysis Of Variable Effects On Presence Of Cryptosporidium Oocysts And Giardia Cysts In Effluent Water From Wastewater Treatment Utilities In Florida From 1998 To 2010, Katherine Jane Barkan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The concern of a Cryptosporidium or Giardia waterborne outbreak due to treated wastewater has had water treatment utilities using some of the highest water cleansing technologies available. Cryptosporidiosis and Giardiasis are severe diarrheal diseases which can lead to death, thus it is important that appropriate steps are taken to assure these parasites are not present in the effluent of treated wastewater. This study examined the results of 863 assays for Giardia and Cryptosporidium on the effluent of wastewater treatment facilities and found that county of collection, watershed of collection, and laboratory analyzing the sample have the most significant impact on …
Effects Of Short Shoot Number And Presence Of An Apical Meristem On Rhizome Elongation, New Short Shoot Production, And New Rhizome Meristem Production Of Thalassia Testudinum Banks And Solander Ex König Planting Units In Tampa Bay., Michael Vearl Meads
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Thalassia testudinum Banks and Solander ex König is the dominant seagrass in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and the West Coast of Florida, yet little rhizome elongation, new short shoot production, or new rhizome meristem production data has been collected via direct measurement. A study of the rhizome growth of T. testudinum was completed in December 2004 in southern Tampa Bay that determined growth after 26.5 months. Two PVC planting frames each containing four rhizomes with 2 short shoots, two rhizomes with 4 short shoots, and two rhizomes with 8 short shoots were planted next to existing T. testudinum beds …

Nitric Oxide And The Biological Cascades Underlying Increased Neurogenesis, Enhanced Learning Ability, And Academic Ability As An Effect Of Increased Bouts Of Physical Activity, Samuel Hunt, James W. Navalta
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 5(3) : 245-275, 2012. The consummate principle underlying all physiological research is corporeal adaptation at every level of the organism observed. With respect to humans, the body learns to function based on the external stimuli from the environment, beginning in the womb, throughout the developmental stages of life. Nitric Oxide (NO) appears to be the governor of the plasticity of several systems in mammals implicit in their proper development. It is the purpose of this review to describe the physiological pathways that lead to plasticity of not only the vasculature but also of the brain …

Assessing Whether Alpha-Tubulin Sequences Are Suitable For Phylogenetic Reconstruction Of Ciliophora With Insights Into Its Evolution In Euplotids, Zhenzhen Yi, Laura A. Katz, Weibo Song
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The current understanding of ciliate phylogeny is mainly based on analyses of a single gene, the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-rDNA). However, phylogenetic trees based on single gene sequence are not reliable estimators of species trees, and SSU-rDNA genealogies are not useful for resolution of some branches within Ciliophora. Since congruence between multiple loci is the best tool to determine evolutionary history, we assessed the usefulness of alpha-tubulin gene, a protein-coding gene that is frequently sequenced, for ciliate phylogeny. Here, we generate alpha-tubulin gene sequences of 12 genera and 30 species within the order Euplotida, one of the most frequently …

Background: The effect of anthropogenic noise on terrestrial wildlife is a relatively new area of study with broad ranging management implications. Noise has been identified as a disturbance that has the potential to induce behavioral responses in animals similar to those associated with predation risk. This study investigated potential impacts of a variety of human activities and their associated noise on the behavior of elk (Cervus elaphus) and pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) along a transportation corridor in Grand Teton National Park.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We conducted roadside scan surveys and focal observations of ungulate behavior while concurrently recording …

This study examined the use of a humanoid robot to engage two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on responding language behaviors including language, affect, imitation, and eye contact. The robot was integrated into each child's regular intervention in low-doses (10 min of a 50 min session). The goal was to increase responding language behaviors in the children with their conversational partners. The two children participated in pre and post assessment sessions as well as 16 intervention sessions. The data from these sessions were coded into two main categories including how the children interacted (Initiating Engagement, Responding to …
Resolving Disulfide Bond Patterns In Snap25b Cysteine-Rich Region Using Lc Mass Spectrometry, Nozomi Ogawa
Resolving Disulfide Bond Patterns In Snap25b Cysteine-Rich Region Using Lc Mass Spectrometry, Nozomi Ogawa
Theses and Dissertations
A global analysis of the human proteome demonstrates that there are ~5500 tryptic fragments that contain four cysteines in close proximity. Elucidating whether they form disulfide bonds in vivo under different conditions is particularly important because cysteines are known to be a vital cellular redox sensor as well as a catalytic site for important biochemical reactions. However, currently there are no methods that can resolve disulfide patterns in closely-packed cysteine residues from a complex sample. In order to address this problem, we have developed a novel mass-spectrometry-based method to identify the different disulfide bonding patterns possible, using SNAP25B cysteine-rich region …

Reproductive Biology Of The Southern Dwarf Siren, Pseudobranchus Axanthus, In Southern Florida, Zachary Cole Adcock
Reproductive Biology Of The Southern Dwarf Siren, Pseudobranchus Axanthus, In Southern Florida, Zachary Cole Adcock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The salamander family Sirenidae is composed of two extant genera, Siren and Pseudobranchus, each with two known species. Several questions regarding Sirenidae life history persist, and much of the available life history data for Pseudobranchus are attributed to studies of P. axanthus in northern Florida. Information on the reproductive biology of P. axanthus is limited, and historical references often suggest contradictory results. This study was undertaken to clarify information and expand on the limited data regarding P. axanthus reproductive biology, specifically for southern Florida populations. The study population was most likely the P. a. belli subspecies. P. axanthus in southern …

My research predominantly focuses on micromagnetic simulations of cobalt nanoparticles. These simulations are carried out by using the Object-Oriented MicroMagnetic Framework: OOMMF) distributed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology: NIST). In performing these simulations, observations of skyrmionic states were observed for large enough nanoparticles. Skyrmions are magnetic vortex states which have a core that is antiparallel with the outermost local magnetic moments. These states are being explored as an exciting branch of research that are applicable in many applications including, but not limited to, magnetic storage devices. Most simulations were carried out using a hemispherical geometry because collaborators …

The Golden Rule Of Benevolence Versus The Silver Rule Of Reciprocity, Jan Tullberg
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
The Golden Rule from the Sermon on the Mount in the Bible instructs: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. This is generally acclaimed as a rule of great wisdom and significant social impact. But the widespread popularity of the rule is accompanied by vagueness concerning its interpretations. Given the authority of Jesus, there is one interpretation of particular interest. The Golden Rule differs from what has been called the silver rule, the principle of reciprocal balance advocated by Confucius, Cicero and others. The Golden Rule does not advocate reciprocity, but generosity also toward persons who …

Denitrification By Sulfur-Oxidizing Bacteria In A Eutrophic Lake, Amy J. Burgin, Stephen K. Hamilton, Stuart E. Jones, Jay T. Lennon
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Understanding the mechanistic controls of microbial denitrification is of central importance to both environmental microbiology and ecosystem ecology. Loss of nitrate (NO3 −) is often attributed to carbon-driven (heterotrophic) denitrification. However, denitrification can also be coupled to sulfur (S) oxidation by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria. In the present study, we used an in situ stable isotope (15NO3 −) tracer addition in combination with molecular approaches to understand the contribution of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to the reduction of NO3 − in a eutrophic lake. Samples were incubated across a total dissolved sulfide (H2S) gradient (2 to …

Paradigm Adherence And Personality Correlates Across Mental Health Professions, Laura Anne Rauscher
Dissertations
Paradigm adherence has been developed as a meta-theoretical approach to organize and to classify the multitude of different theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Four paradigms have been identified in the literature: The Organic-Medical, The Psychological, The Systemic-Relational, and the Social Constructivist paradigms. Only one other study to date has examined paradigm adherence of a group (Marriage and Family Therapists) and how it can be of value to the mental health professionals. This study examined the relationship between paradigm adherence and different characteristics of mental health professionals in the state of Missouri. In this study, Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, …

Angiogenesis In Response To Varying Fiber Size In An Electrospun Scaffold In Vivo., Damien Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Injury to the spinal cord results in partial or complete loss of sensory perception and motor function. After spinal cord injury (SCI), damaged tissue dies and a cavity will form. This cavity prevents the regeneration of tissue and any functional recovery. One way to address the cavity is the insertion of an electrospun scaffold that our lab has created. This provides a substrate for regenerating tissue to grow on, and it is thought that reestablishing the blood supply within the scaffold will allow cells necessary for regeneration to thrive. This could ultimately lead to meaningful recovery for patients who have …

Aversive Visual Conditioning In Drosophila Melanogaster, Raudel Melchor, Kyung-An Han
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Visual cues in our environment revive past experiences that have impacted our life in a positive or negative manner. Furthermore, such behavior may not only require a prompt response, but it may also scale to a permanent effect on the individual. Dopamine regulates motivation and reward, along with learning and memory. Via classical olfactory conditioning knowledge has been attained that dopamine, a major monoamine in Drosophila melanogaster, is essential for learning and memory. Flies learn and remember odor associated with either sugar or electrical shock and dopamine plays a crucial role in both appetitive and aversive olfactory memory formation. …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Severe burns, ulcerations, and cuts are some of the reasons people need bioengineered skin as a treatment for full-thickness wounds. When patients run out of donor sites in their own body, using the patient’s skin as a graft is no longer an option, and tissue-engineered constructs are the only possible replacement for damaged skin. The goal of this research is to develop a hydrogel-based skin graft that will be able to function as a skin replacement in full-thickness wounds while minimizing the possibility of rejection, being cost-effective, and possessing a longer shelf-life than the grafts currently in the market. The isolation of primary cell cultures from fresh mammalian tissue is a major interest of our laboratory. Thus, the ability to generate cancer cell lines from cancer tissue, or to generate non-malignant cultures form the host stroma surrounding a tumor, allows us to develop new laboratory models to study the behavior of cancer cells and its microenvironment. We report our proof of principle study on optimizing the derivation of primary culture, using rat tissues as a model. Thus, rat kidney and rat skin samples were isolated, minced with surgical blades, and then incubated with an enzyme digestion cocktail (Collagenase III- …
