Resilience Limitations And Resistance Of Hyporheic Microbial Communities From Chronic Heavy Metal Contamination Environments: Analysis With The Novel Resazurin Resorufin Smart Tracer, Daniel Joseph Stanaway
Resilience Limitations And Resistance Of Hyporheic Microbial Communities From Chronic Heavy Metal Contamination Environments: Analysis With The Novel Resazurin Resorufin Smart Tracer, Daniel Joseph Stanaway
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
River ecosystems are among the most threatened and rapidly altering systems in the world because of anthropogenic disturbance. Chronic heavy metal contamination of lotic environments is a global concern and a widespread environmental and human health threat. This persistent stressor can shape microbial community structure and function, often selecting for the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics that increase fitness in toxic environments and may encumber the microbial community hosting metal resistance mechanisms with additional energetic costs. This cost should be expressed in heterotrophic aerobic microbial metabolism, a primary ecological process variable and can be estimated through respiration measurements. Hyporheic respiration is …
Gpu-Accelerated Modeling Of Microscale Atmospheric Flows Over Complex Terrain, Anthony Rey Deleon
Gpu-Accelerated Modeling Of Microscale Atmospheric Flows Over Complex Terrain, Anthony Rey Deleon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
With installed wind power capacities steadily on the rise, balancing the loads on electrical grids is challenging due to the intermittency of the wind. Short-term wind power forecasting can be a valuable tool for better informing grid operators on the available wind power. Current short-term wind forecasting techniques typically adopt mesoscale weather forecasting models with spatial resolutions on the order of a kilometer. On relatively flat terrain, use of mesoscale models may prove effective, but application to complex terrain induces large forecasting errors. To address this issue, a baseline incompressible flow solver for GPU (graphics processing unit) clusters is extended …
Scorpion Phylogeography In The North American Aridlands, Matthew Ryan Graham
Scorpion Phylogeography In The North American Aridlands, Matthew Ryan Graham
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Understanding the geographic, geologic, and climatic forces responsible for generating current patterns of biodiversity has been a central objective of phylogeography. To develop a better understanding of these processes in the North American arid lands, I used DNA sequence data and species distribution modeling to conduct three phylogeographic assessments incorporating four species of arid-adapted scorpions:Hadrurus arizonensis, H. jedediah, H. spadix, and Paruroctonus becki. In an assessment of H. arizonensis, phylogeographic patterns indicate that Pleistocene climate cycles and associated glacial refugia played a central role in structuring the genetic diversity of this species in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, mostly supporting predictions …

Mini-Review: Decorin, A Guardian From The Matrix, Thomas Neill, Liliana Schaefer, Renato V. Iozzo
Mini-Review: Decorin, A Guardian From The Matrix, Thomas Neill, Liliana Schaefer, Renato V. Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Decorin, an archetypal member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family, has a broad binding repertoire that encompasses matrix structural components, such as collagens, and growth factors, particularly those that belong to the transforming growth factor-β ligand superfamily. Within the tumor microenvironment, stromal decorin has an inherent proclivity to directly bind and down-regulate several receptor tyrosine kinases, which are often overexpressed in cancer cells. The decorin interactome commands a powerful antitumorigenic signal by potently repressing and attenuating tumor cell proliferation, survival, migration, and angiogenesis. This collection of interacting molecules also regulates key downstream signaling processes indirectly via the sequestration of …
Comparative Review Of Imaging Methods Used For Diagnosing Renal Artery Stenosis (Ras), Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Jacinta Browne
Comparative Review Of Imaging Methods Used For Diagnosing Renal Artery Stenosis (Ras), Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Jacinta Browne
Articles
This comparative review examines the efficacy of different imaging methods to detect and quantify renal artery stenosis (RAS). Detection of RAS is important because it can lead to renovascular hypertension which is the most common form of secondary hypertension. Furthermore, it is important that a RAS is detected as early as possible as it is a potentially correctable cause of hypertension.1 If detected at an early stage RAS can potentially be treated using a minimally invasive drug treatment regimen rather than the more invasive percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty without or with stent placement or surgery. Currently there are a …
Factors Affecting Orthodontic Adherence In Appalachia, Breana M. Phillips
Factors Affecting Orthodontic Adherence In Appalachia, Breana M. Phillips
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Orthodontic intervention enhances not only esthetics and psychosocial health, but also improves the function of the human dentition. Many insurance programs now offer orthodontic coverage; however, proper adherence and good oral hygiene habits are poor among those Appalachian individuals undergoing orthodontic care. This research study was conducted to determine the contributing factors in poor orthodontic compliance in Appalachia. Investigators completed a retrospective chart review, assessing inactive orthodontic patients from 2007-2012 at a private practice in North Central West Virginia. The general dentist at this rural office practices both general dentistry, as well as, orthodontics. Information regarding demographics, form of payment, …

Cliff Ecology: Extent, Biota, And Recreation Of Cliff Environments In The New River Gorge, Wv, Peter W. Clark
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The New River Gorge National River (NERI) contains an extensive network of exposed cliff-forming sandstone units, the most extensive in West Virginia and possibly within the entire Appalachian range. These cliff resources are critical to NERI's national significance, and contain specialized and potentially rare plant communities (Vanderhorst 2001; Mahan 2004; Vanderhorst, Jeuck, and Gawler 2007). This project investigates the spatial distribution of cliffs, associated plant (vascular and non-vascular) and lichen communities, and the impacts to cliff environments caused by recreational rock climbing.;Using LiDAR in a GIS, we mapped all cliffs in the northern extent of NERI, from Keeney's Creek to …
Inhibition Of Breast Cancer Angiogenesis And Metastasis Ay Targeting Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1Α, Chikezie O. Madu
Inhibition Of Breast Cancer Angiogenesis And Metastasis Ay Targeting Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1Α, Chikezie O. Madu
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The current clinical chemotherapy agents are not ideal for breast cancer as they are not curative, but only provide a modest extension of survival with sometimes a severely adverse effect on the patient’s quality of life. There is, therefore, an urgent need to search for new and more effective anti-breast cancer drugs. However, the existing screening system is inefficient and time-consuming despite the extremely large amount of small molecule compounds in database currently available, and thereby hindering the effort for selecting new and effective anti-cancer drugs.
The majority of locally advanced solid tumors contain regions of reduced oxygen availability. Hypoxia …

Independent Component Analysis Of Event-Related Electroencephalography During Speech And Non-Speech Discrimination: : Implications For The Sensorimotor ∆∞ Rhythm In Speech Processing, Andrew Lee Bowers
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Background: The functional significance of sensorimotor integration in acoustic speech processing is unclear despite more than three decades of neuroimaging research. Constructivist theories have long speculated that listeners make predictions about articulatory goals functioning to weight sensory analysis toward expected acoustic features (e.g. analysis-by-synthesis; internal models). Direct-realist accounts posit that sensorimotor integration is achieved via a direct match between incoming acoustic cues and articulatory gestures. A method capable of favoring one account over the other requires an ongoing, high-temporal resolution measure of sensorimotor cortical activity prior to and following acoustic input. Although scalp-recorded electroencephalography (EEG) provides a measure of cortical …

"We Can't Help If We Don't Know": School Psychologists' Awareness Of And Support To Children With Parents Serving In The Military, Deborah B. Johnson
Education Doctoral
Estimates suggest that up to two million children have had a parent deployed at least once over the past decade. Despite the length of the war, and multiple deployments, little is known about how school psychologists support military children before during and after deployment. This study investigated how school psychologists who are members of the New York Association of School Psychologists support children who have or have had a parent deployed in support of the Overseas Contingency Operation. Results suggest that they have limited awareness when children have a parent deployed yet 43% reported having provided counseling to, consultation and …
Parenting And Feeding Behaviors Associated With School-Aged African American And White Children, Michele Polfuss, Marilyn Frenn
Parenting And Feeding Behaviors Associated With School-Aged African American And White Children, Michele Polfuss, Marilyn Frenn
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Pediatric obesity is multifactorial and difficult to treat. Parenting and feeding behaviors have been shown to influence a child’s weight status. Most prior studies have focused on preschool-aged White children. Additional complicating factors include parents’ inability to accurately identify their child’s abnormal weight status. Parenting and feeding behaviors used by 176 African American and White parents of school-age children were examined. Assessment included (a) identifying what behaviors were reported when parent expressed concern with child’s weight and (b) the relationship of these behaviors on child’s body mass index percentile (BMI%), considering ethnicity, socioeconomic status (SES), and parent’s body mass index …

Evaluation Of The Potential For Detection And Classification Of Ailanthus Altissima (Tree Of Heaven) Using Lidar Data, Cassidy Robert Rhea
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis compares methods for delineating and classifying the invasive, exotic tree Ailanthus altissima (tree of heaven), using attributes derived entirely from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. The accuracy of two image segmentation methods: 1) Tree variable window program (TreeVaW) and 2) watershed segmentation, and three classifications schemes: 1) classification and regression trees (CART) 2) artificial neural networks (NN) and 3) support vector machines (SVM) are compared. I found that generally the watershed segmentation method produced better segmentation results than the TreeVaW segmentation method, and that the CART classification was the most accurate overall classifier, although the SVM classification …
Pharmacological Characterization Of An Optimized Sigma Receptor Ligand, Michael Seminerio
Pharmacological Characterization Of An Optimized Sigma Receptor Ligand, Michael Seminerio
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Methamphetamine is an addictive psychostimulant drug with an increasing prevalence of abuse worldwide. Recent evidence has linked methamphetamine exposure to a wide array of neurological complications some of which lead to neurodegenerative changes in the brain and hyperthermia. Currently, there are no FDA approved pharmacologic agents to treat the effects of methamphetamine. Recent evidence has suggested methamphetamine may, in part, produce some of its effects through sigma receptors making them a potential target for pharmacological intervention. While our lab has shown a number of selective sigma receptor ligands can provide neuroprotection against the neurotoxic and behavioral effects of methamphetamine, limitations …

Religion, Government, And Law In The Contemporary United States, Daniel O. Conkle
Religion, Government, And Law In The Contemporary United States, Daniel O. Conkle
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In this Essay, I discuss the relationship between religion and government in the contemporary United States, addressing the period from the 1940s to the present. In so doing, I explore questions of religious liberty, including the protection of religious “free exercise” as well as the constitutional prohibition on the establishment of religion, a prohibition that sometimes - but not always - has been construed to require a “wall of separation” between church and state. I focus especially on the Supreme Court’s evolving interpretations of the First Amendment during this period, which, I suggest, were influenced by broader religious, cultural, and …
A Reexamination Of The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris Collaris) In Arkansas, Ashley A. Grimsley
A Reexamination Of The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris Collaris) In Arkansas, Ashley A. Grimsley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Loss of suitable habitat is a threat to species worldwide. Habitat destruction, including loss, change, and fragmentation of habitat, is the leading cause of species extinction. Eastern collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris collaris) are habitat specialists on glades. Both C. c. collaris and glade habitats are rare and of special concern in the state of Arkansas. Many glade populations have already been extirpated in the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri. Increasing knowledge of the distribution, habitat structure, and population dynamics of C. c. collaris is important to ensure the survival of this species in Arkansas.

Characterization And Consumer Acceptance Of White Striping In Broiler Breast Fillets, Vivek Ayamchirakkunnel Kuttappan
Characterization And Consumer Acceptance Of White Striping In Broiler Breast Fillets, Vivek Ayamchirakkunnel Kuttappan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
White striping is an emerging issue in the broiler meat industry which causes concerns among the producers. The condition is characterized by the occurrence of white striations, parallel to the direction of muscle fibers, mainly in broiler breast fillets and thighs. Fillets can be categorized as NORM (normal or no striping), MOD (moderate) and SEV (severe) depending on the degree of white striping. As a result of few previous research studies on the condition, there is no information available on the impact of white striping on the consumer acceptance and various meat quality attributes. Our hypothesis was that the occurrence …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment transport is a concern for Northwest Arkansas due to high exports through riverine discharge. Urban, agricultural, and pastured watersheds have been associated with increased N, P, and sediment concentrations when compared to forested catchments. The objective of this study was to evaluate discharge and nutrient loads associated with a small urban, agricultural (row crop), wetland influenced, and pasture/farmland sub-catchment within four ephemeral drainages and located at the Watershed Research and Education Center in Fayetteville, AR. Samples were collected during base flow conditions and periodic storm flow conditions from 2009-2012. Flow adjusted concentration trends were used to …
Time Waits For No One: Using Time As A Lens In Information Systems Research, Christopher M. Conway
Time Waits For No One: Using Time As A Lens In Information Systems Research, Christopher M. Conway
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite considerable research interest, IT projects still fail at a higher rate than other projects. Primary causes for these failures are relational, motivational, and scheduling issues on the team. Using the concept of time as a lens, the four essays in this dissertation examine how the ways that individuals and teams structure time can help explain these failures. The essays formulate the concept of temporal dissonance at the individual and team level, and explore how temporal dissonance causes negative consequences for IT workers and IT teams.
Essay one synthesizes temporal dissonance from concepts of temporal congruity and cognitive dissonance. It …
The Role Of Antioxidant Rich Berries In The Prevention Of Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Lydia Karimi Kaume
The Role Of Antioxidant Rich Berries In The Prevention Of Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Lydia Karimi Kaume
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the most prevalent form of osteoporosis and results in fragility fractures. Smoking is one of the major risk factors for osteoporosis and is known to aggravate bone loss in postmenopausal women due to increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Diet-based interventions using berries have shown bone protective affects in animal studies partially due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of their phenolic compounds. The goal of this research was to determine the effects of antioxidant-rich fruits in the prevention of postmenopausal bone loss. Our first study examined the dose dependent effects of blackberries in preventing bone loss in an …

Part I - A Study Of The Formation Of Carbenes By Elimination Of Α-Bromosilanes And Application Toward The Synthesis Of Transition Metal Complexed Quinone Methide Analogs. Part Ii - Development Of Novel 7-Membered Ring Carbene Ligands For Palladium Catalyzed Cross Coupling Reactions., Christian Michael Loeschel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In part I, we wish to report our approaches toward transition metal complexed ortho-quinone methide analogs. ortho-Quinone Methides are a class of highly reactive compounds with a wide range of chemical and biological applications. Previously, a stable iron complexed benzannulated 5-membered ring quinone methide analog was reported by Allison and Neal27. Herein, we report our approaches to improve the reactivity of that system by removing benzannulation as well as changing the metal from iron to manganese and rhenium.
Furthermore, a methodological study on generating carbenes under mild conditions by elimination of α-halosilanes and its application towards metal complexed quinone methide …
Characterization And Quantification Of Monomers, Oligomers, And By-Products From Xylan During Biomass Pretreatment, Ching-Shuan Lau
Characterization And Quantification Of Monomers, Oligomers, And By-Products From Xylan During Biomass Pretreatment, Ching-Shuan Lau
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Biomass pretreatment generates inhibitory products, which reduce the overall yield of xylose for ethanol production. Understanding of hemicellulose depolymerization into xylose is essential to identify the pretreatment conditions that maximize xylose formation, but minimize the generation of these inhibitory products, such as formic acid and furfural. Thus, the goal of this project is to understand how dilute acid pretreatment parameters affect hemicellulose depolymerization, maximize xylose concentrations, and minimize by-products formation.
To progress towards this goal, rates and mechanisms of hemicellulose release must be determined. Birchwood xylan was used as the starting material to produce xylose oligomers. The hydrolyzed birchwood xylan …
