Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The present study is the first meta-analysis to evaluate type 2 diabetes (T2D) - associated polymorphisms in cohorts originated from several Tunisian regions. In fact, we evaluated the effect of seven polymorphisms in the following genes; PPARg ( Pro12Ala), TNFα (-308A/G), ENPP1(K121Q), TCF7L2(rs7903146 C/T), MTHFR( C677T), ACE(I/D), CAPN10(3R/2R) on T2D risk, through a meta-analysis combining data of previous studies performed on Tunisian populations originating from the north, centre or south of the country. R statistics version 2.12.1 software was used to estimate the heterogeneity between studies. Pooled ORs were computed by the fixed-effects method of Mantel-Haenszel if no heterogeneity between …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Fossil fuel emissions aside, temperate North America is a net sink of carbon dioxide at present1–3. Year-to-year variations in this carbon sink are linked to variations in hydroclimate that affect net ecosystem productivity3,4. The severity and incidence of climatic extremes, including drought, have increased as a result of climate warming5–8. Here, we examine the effect of the turn of the century drought in western North America on carbon uptake in the region, using reanalysis data, remote sensing observations and data from global monitoring networks. We show that the area-integrated strength of the western North American …
Classification Of Genomic Sequences By Latent Semantic Analysis, Samuel F. Way
Classification Of Genomic Sequences By Latent Semantic Analysis, Samuel F. Way
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Evolutionary distance measures provide a means of identifying and organizing related organisms by comparing their genomic sequences. As such, techniques that quantify the level of similarity between DNA sequences are essential in our efforts to decipher the genetic code in which they are written.
Traditional methods for estimating the evolutionary distance separating two genomic sequences often require that the sequences first be aligned before they are compared. Unfortunately, this preliminary step imposes great computational burden, making this class of techniques impractical for applications involving a large number of sequences. Instead, we desire new methods for differentiating genomic sequences that eliminate …
The Small Molecule Inhibitor Roscovitine Does Not Promote The Establishment Of A Quiescent Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Mutant Ghsv-Ul46 Infection In Neurally Differentiated Pc 12 Cells, Mario D. Caldararo
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 leads to a lifelong presence of the vims in the host typified by the punctuated recrudescence of herpetic lesions of the orofacial region. Recmdescence of symptoms is due to the ability of the virus to reactivate from a latent state in neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. The latent state characterized by a complete lack of DNA replication, absence of virion stmctural protein production, and the minimal expression of a very limited set of regulatory genes. Reactivation is seen as the return to full viral gene expression, production of new infectious virions, and the …
Disseminating Evidence-Based Information About Nutrition To Practitioners, Marissa Burgermaster
Disseminating Evidence-Based Information About Nutrition To Practitioners, Marissa Burgermaster
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Primary care practitioners (PCPs) have a role to play in the primary and secondary prevention of diet/weight-related chronic disease through nutrition assessment, education, counseling, and referral. Although PCPs tend to have positive attitudes about nutrition, many do not engage in nutrition related practice behaviors. In this research, it is assumed that improving PCPs’ current nutrition knowledge of and access to evolving, evidence-based information about nutrition will lead them to be more likely to engage in nutrition assessment, education, counseling, and appropriate referrals with the ultimate aim of positive patient outcomes. This research used concept mapping, a participatory, mixed methods approach …
The Case Of Canoe Brook Wells In Glacial Sand And Gravel, Livingston, New Jersey : Establishing The Hydraulic Signs Of Well Contamination Risk Using Topography, Brian Frank
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
When little groundwater level data is available, the potential energy gradients reflected in the topography, assumed to be saturated to the surface, can be used to estimate the directions and relative rates of groundwater flow (flow systems). Darcy’s law conveniently relates groundwater water levels to the rate of groundwater flow. Toth (1963) related topography to groundwater flow systems. Flow systems can transport surface contamination, if present, to wells. The topography and likely contamination point source surface locations were used to create and contrast the flow systems impacting two wells in order to assess contamination risk. The two wells, Canoe Brook …
Modeling The Curvature Of A Ferrofluid Interface Using A Height Function Method, Holly Timme
Modeling The Curvature Of A Ferrofluid Interface Using A Height Function Method, Holly Timme
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The behavior of an interface embedded in a fluid is central to a wide range of biological, chemical, environmental and physical problems and engineering processes. Modeling the evolution of a fluid interface is thus a critical and important problem. In many instances, including two-phase (e.g. liquid-gas) flows, the interface is an internal boundary within a PDE model. A model of the interface properties and its evolution is then typically performed by numerical computation, within the framework of the PDE solution method, such as finite differences (FD). Volume of Fluid (VOF) is a simple FD based method which exhibits excellent volume …
Interactions Between Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Canadensis And Domestic Sheep Ovis Aries And The Biological, Social, Economic, And Legal Implications Of These Interactions On Usda Forest Service Lands In The Evanston/Mt. View Ranger District, Ashly Nicole Herrera
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Strong evidence exists indicating domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can infect Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis), a United States Forest Service (USFS) Region 4 sensitive species, with pneumonia (Callan 1991; Foreyt 1989, 1992, 1994; Foreyt and Lagerquist 1996; George et al 2008; Wehausen et al. 2011). Since the transmission of the pneumonic bacteria between the domestic and wild sheep is a result of bighorn sheep coming into contact with the bacteria carried in the mucous membranes of the domestic sheep, bighorn sheep at risk of initially contracting the bacteria are those individuals that enter areas currently being grazed or …

Peptoid Based Slide Coatings For Disease Detection Via Elisa Microarray Analysis, Melissa Lea Hebert
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Poly-N-substituted glycines (peptoids) are a very versatile family of synthetic molecules that can be customized for any number of applications. In this study, we chose to use peptoids as a foundation for sandwich ELISA microarray analysis with a long term goal of creating an early detection device for complex diseases such as cancer. The peptoids were designed to self-assemble into microspheres to be used in coatings on the surface of the microarray substrates to increase the surface area available for antibody attachment. This increased antibody density would lead to an increase in the microarray analysis sensitivity and dynamic range. Studies …
The Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Sucrose And Stachyose Content In Soybean Seed, Ailan Zeng
The Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Sucrose And Stachyose Content In Soybean Seed, Ailan Zeng
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sucrose is a desirable sugar in soybean seed that affects the quality and taste of soyfoods, while stachyose is a non-digestible sugar that induces flatulence in non-ruminant animals. Therefore, soybean cultivars with high sucrose and/or low stachyose would be valuable for soyfood and meal markets. The objectives of this study were to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) or genes associated with seed sucrose and stachyose content using simple sequence repeat (SSR) or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A low sucrose line, MFS-553, was crossed with a high sucrose plant introduction, PI 243545, to develop the sucrose QTL mapping population. A …

What Factors Influence Consumers' Willingness To Purchase And Consume Carbon-Labeled Rice: A Comparative Study Between Arkansas And Belgium, John A. Kelley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Climate change is an issue of growing importance around the globe. As global population increases so does attention focused on human contributions to climate change. One major way humans contribute to climate change is through our diets. Agricultural production is a major source of global greenhouse emissions. It has been estimated that food production is responsible for a large majority of the methane and nitrous oxide which is emitted into our atmosphere each year. Carbon footprint labeling has been developed to give consumers a way to lower their footprint and help lower emissions of greenhouse gasses. At least one retailer, …

Livestock Production And Wildlife-Based Tourism: Articulating Land-Use And Policy Conflicts In The Okavango Delta Ramsar Site In Botswana, Nelson Kgamanyane Sello
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The management of common pool resources and policy conflicts between livestock and wildlife, two land-use types that take place in the same geo-spatial area has been a subject of debate among scholars for decades. This conflict in policies has engendered in communities which are beneficiaries attitudes that are either negative towards wildlife or favorable depending on the benefits they derive from them. This research therefore set out to understand the conflicts in the management of the Okavango Delta Ramsar Site (ODRS) where the OD is situated. The study used the grounded theory to collect and analyze the data in the …

Predicting Occupancy Of Wintering Migratory Birds: Is Microhabitat Information Necessary?, Christopher J. W. Mcclure, Brian W. Rolek, Geoffrey E. Hill
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Information regarding microhabitat, here defined as small-scale vegetation structure, is often useful in predicting use of habitat by birds. Quantifying microhabitat, however, is expensive and labor intensive compared to assessment of habitat at a larger scale, possibly from remotely sensed imagery. To assess the importance of microhabitat information in constructing predictive models of habitat occupancy, we compared occupancy models built on the basis of macro- and microhabitat together and separately. We based our models on counts of wintering migratory bird species and vegetation surveys within Tuskegee National Forest, Alabama, completed during winter 2009. Models built from macrohabitat data only outperformed …
Bridging Developmental Neuroscience And The Law: Child-Caregiver Relationships, Ross A. Thompson
Bridging Developmental Neuroscience And The Law: Child-Caregiver Relationships, Ross A. Thompson
UC Law Journal
Advances in neuroscience are changing understanding of the biological foundations of human development and have implications for legal analysis. As with any period of rapid scientific progress, however, new ideas are subject to misinterpretation and errors in application. This Article offers guidance on how to avoid such problems and consider carefully the applications of developmental neuroscience to legal policy and practice, with a particular emphasis on caregiver-child relationships. Three principles are discussed. First, the most confident applications of developmental neuroscience to legal policy occur when the conclusions of neuroscience are consistent with those of behavioral research. This is because their …
The Relevance Of Immaturities In The Juvenile Brain To Culpability And Rehabilitation, Beatriz Luna
The Relevance Of Immaturities In The Juvenile Brain To Culpability And Rehabilitation, Beatriz Luna
UC Law Journal
The overreaching aim of this Article is to describe how developmental cognitive neuroscience can inform juvenile law. Fundamental to culpability and responsibility is the ability to effectively execute voluntary executive behavior. Executive function, including cognitive control and working memory, has a protracted development with key aspects continuing to mature through adolescence. These limitations in executive control are due in great part to still maturing brain processes. Gray and white matter changes are still becoming established in adolescence, enhancing efficiency and the speed of brain processing supporting executive control. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter that underlies reward processing and learning, peaks in adolescence—supporting …

While fish is rich in essential nutrients and women are encouraged to consume fish products, fish may contain methylmercury, which is an established neurotoxin to the fetus. Not surprisingly, there are high levels of anxiety among women of reproductive age regarding fish consumption. To be able to counsel women in this complex area, we have developed a two-step program: (1) probing women of reproductive age for their perceptions regarding the safety of consuming fish, and (2) piloting an intervention program with women of reproductive age to ensure mercury levels are below the recently proposed Lowest Observable Adverse Effect Level. This …

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (“fMRI”) technology produces a four-dimensional map of brain activity, such as perception, memory, emotion, and movement. fMRI scans track the flow of blood to the various regions of the brain in real time and reveal the subject’s response to particular stimulus. For example, an fMRI scan might reveal blood flow to a subject’s memory center in response to a picture of the house in which she was raised. On the one hand, this technology seems to produce a model of a physical attribute and offer insight into the workings of the human brain. On the other, …

Foreshadowing Future Slaughter: From The Indonesian Killings Of 1965Ð1966 To The 1974Ð1999 Genocide In East Timor, Kai Thaler
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The failure of the international community to act on the legal and moral imperative to stop, punish, and prevent genocide and other mass killings has led to the establishment of genocidal regimes that institutionalize genocide as a tactic of repression and power consolidation. One such repeat offender regime was the New Order government of Indonesia, which committed mass killings of known and alleged communists throughout Indonesia in 1965–1966 and later carried out a genocidal, colonial occupation of East Timor. I demonstrate parallels between the actors, tactics, and discourse of the communist killings and the Timorese Genocide. The failures of domestic …

Speciation Studies For Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds And Secondary Organic Aerosol Generated By Ozonolysis Of Volatile Organic Compound Mixtures, Hardik Surendra Amin
Dissertations
Aerosols are either emitted directly into the atmosphere or are generated in the atmosphere; the latter process forms secondary organic aerosol (SOA). One of the important sources for SOA is the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by OH radicals, NOx, and O3. Aerosol can be visualized as suspended solid or liquid particle which is in equilibrium with surrounding gases. The products of SOA formation is a mixture of semi volatile organic compounds and a fraction of the products are condensable under atmospheric conditions. The condensable portion of aerosol is called particulate matter (PM) and these suspended particles can range …

Making The Political Personal: Investigating The Relationship Between Feminist Beliefs And Sexual Assertiveness, Kate Miller Hagadone
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between identification with feminist beliefs and sexual assertiveness, by examining three potential mediators of that relationship: self-objectification, empowered entitlement, and self-silencing. Cross-sectional survey data were collected via online survey from 188 women. Results from correlational analyses indicated that active commitment to feminist beliefs was significantly related to lower levels of self-objectification and self-silencing and higher levels of empowered entitlement, but was not related to sexual assertiveness. Identification with nonfeminist beliefs (passive acceptance of sexism) was significantly related to higher levels of self-objectification and self-silencing and decreased empowered entitlement, as well …
Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong
Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong
Masters Theses
Determination of hydroxyl radical rate constants are essential to ensure adequate degradation of contaminants in wastewater. Hydrazines are an important class of organic contaminants and are the focus of this research. Ten 1,1-dialkylhydrazines are synthesized by the zinc reduction of the corresponding N-nitrosamines. Their hydroxyl radical rate constants are determined using the linear accelerator at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory at pH 4, 7, and 10.
Their rate constants are found to depend on the protonation state of the molecule. At pH 4 the molecules are fully protonated and hydrogen atom abstraction is favored from the alkyl chains. At …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Current methods for evaluating upper extremity (UE) dynamics during pediatric wheelchair use are limited. We propose a new model to characterize UE joint kinematics and kinetics during pediatric wheelchair mobility. The bilateral model is comprised of the thorax, clavicle, scapula, upper arm, forearm, and hand segments. The modeled joints include: sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, elbow and wrist. The model is complete and is currently undergoing pilot studies for clinical application. Results may provide considerable quantitative insight into pediatric UE joint dynamics to improve wheelchair prescription, training and long term care of children with orthopaedic disabilities.

Deformation And Adhesion Of Thin Metallic Films On Flexible Substrates, Julia Reid
All Theses
Flexible electronics are conductive circuits, components and lines integrated onto elastic substrates. These systems often consist of metallic thin films deposited onto thin sheets of glass, metals stainless steel or polymeric materials such as polyethylene or polystyrene. These systems are currently being studied for a wide variety of aeronautic and astronautical applications including: electronic skins, solar sails, and antennae structures. For applications include only moderately elevated temperatures (near 200 ¡C) and low strains (insert range), engineers have proposed incorporation metallic lines onto polymeric substrates. Like traditional microelectronic systems with films on hard substrates, the reliability is controlled by the film-substrate …
Reproductive Ecology Of American Oystercatchers In The Cape Romain Region Of South Carolina: Implications For Conservation, Samantha Collins
Reproductive Ecology Of American Oystercatchers In The Cape Romain Region Of South Carolina: Implications For Conservation, Samantha Collins
All Theses
The Cape Romain Region (CRR) is located along the coast of South Carolina and supports over half of the breeding pairs (approximately 200 pairs) of American Oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus) in the state. Research has shown that oystercatcher productivity in this area is low due to predation and over-wash from high tides and boat wakes. I assessed the feasibility of using headstarting as a means of reducing nest loss in an attempt to enhance reproductive success during the 2010 and 2011 breeding seasons. Apparent nest success of headstarted nests (52%) was higher than control nests (11%) along two study areas within …
