Developing Monitoring Methods For Leptasterias Spp. As Sentinel Species In Detecting Local Environmental Changes, Zachary Sturbaum, Kathryn Nuessly, Riley J. Smith, C. Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Leptasterias spp., a six-rayed sea star, is found in rocky intertidal habitats ranging from Alaska to central California. Leptasterias spp. can be monitored on a broad scale throughout their range by a variety of means using timed counts and random plot censusing in order to detect both large-scale and local-level changes in the environment due to climate change, land-based human activity, or other environmental events. Leptasterias brood their young externally until the embryos grow into fully developed juveniles. These juveniles disperse by crawling away, limiting their dispersal potential. This localized dispersal provides an opportunity to use Leptasterias spp …

Domains Of Schizotypy And Associations With Cognitive Biases In A Non-Clinical Sample: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach, Stephanie A. Sacks
Open Access Dissertations
The spectrum perspective views schizotypy as a subclinical expression of schizophrenic psychopathology resulting from shared etiology (Claridge & Beech, 1995). Research on normative populations scoring high on schizotypy is valuable because performance is not confounded by issues often present in schizophrenia samples. Research on schizotypy is also important because it may help elucidate the predisposition to schizophrenia (Jahshan & Sergi, 2007). Prior efforts to establish the underlying multidimensional construct of schizotypy have not been entirely consistent, but have generally supported a four-factor model when more comprehensive measures of schizotypy are used (Reynolds, Raine, Mellingen, Venables, & Mednick, 2000). The current …

Debating Sustainable Development In Global Climate Change Policy: The “Cancún Agreements” V. The “People’S Agreement Of Cochabamba”, Andrew J. Riplinger
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The climate is in crisis, and the policies put in place now will have a dramatic impact on international development, international relations, and social movements for generations to come. In recent years there have been two major conferences bringing together international policy makers to craft a treaty to address climate change that would take the place of the Kyoto Protocol when it expires at the end of 2012: the United Nations Framework Convention in Climate Change (UNFCCC; resulting in the 2009 “Copenhagen Accord” and the 2010 “Cancún Agreements”) and the World Peoples’ Conference on Climate Change (WPCCC; resulting in the …

The Contribution Of Small Farms And Commercial Large Farms To The Food Security Of Trinidad And Tobago, Alia L. Allard
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze Trinidad and Tobago’s recent agricultural policy decisions and their effect on the way small farms and commercial large farms coexist to contribute to the country's food security. Food security is defined as when all persons can access sufficient and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life, and have enough income to access that food in a safe, socially acceptable way. This research uses qualitative data from farmers, representatives of agricultural organizations, and consumers/vendors at open air markets in Tobago, and secondary data from local government offices and international …

Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) control a host of biological functions by phosphorylating tyrosine residues of intracellular proteins upon extracellular ligand binding. The phosphotyrosines (p-Tyr) then recruit a subset of ∼100 Src homology 2 (SH2) domain-containing proteins to the cell membrane. The in vivo kinetics of this process are not well understood. Here we use total internal reflection (TIR) microscopy and single-molecule imaging to monitor interactions between SH2 modules and p-Tyr sites near the cell membrane. We found that the dwell time of SH2 modules within the TIR illumination field is significantly longer than predictions based on chemical dissociation rate constants, …

Family-Based Genome-Wide Association Study Of Frontal Theta Oscillations Identifies Potassium Channel Gene Kcnj6, Victor M. Hesselbrock
UCHC Articles - Research
Event-related oscillations (EROs) represent highly heritable neuroelectric correlates of cognitive processes that manifest deficits in alcoholics and in offspring at high risk to develop alcoholism. Theta ERO to targets in the visual oddball task has been shown to be an endophenotype for alcoholism. A family-based genome-wide association study was performed for the frontal theta ERO phenotype using 634583 autosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped in 1560 family members from 117 families densely affected by alcohol use disorders, recruited in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism. Genome-wide significant association was found with several SNPs on chromosome 21 in KCNJ6 …

Interleukin-1Β In Central Nervous System Injury And Repair, Nicole A. Jackman, Sandra J. Hewett, Robert J. Claycomb
UCHC Articles - Research
Acute inflammation is a self-limiting, complex biological response mounted to combat pathogen invasion, to protect against tissue damage, and to promote tissue repair should it occur. However, unabated inflammation can be deleterious and contribute to injury and pathology. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), a prototypical “pro-inflammatory” cytokine, is essential to cellular defense and tissue repair in nearly all tissues. With respect to brain, however, studies suggest that IL-1β has pleiotrophic effects. It acts as a neuromodulator in the healthy central nervous system (CNS), has been implicated in the pathogenic processes associated with a number of CNS maladies, but may also provide protection to …

A Narrative Inquiry Exploring How College Communication Professors Engage Students With Public Speaking Apprehensions, Derek Riedel
A Narrative Inquiry Exploring How College Communication Professors Engage Students With Public Speaking Apprehensions, Derek Riedel
Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how communication professors at four-year private universities help students who exhibit public speaking apprehension (PSA) learn to cope with their anxiety. The research was framed in the narrative inquiry paradigm, interviewing eight college communication professors about their experiences working with public speaking students. Each of the eight professors worked at private universities in a large southwest metropolitan city. The researcher attempted to gather critical incidents that shed light on valuable learning experiences that could be useful to professors looking for ways to help reduce their students' PSA. The researcher found three …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Recent global synthetic analyses have revealed that marine taxonomic inventories are far from complete, nowhere more so than in the deep-pelagic ocean. At over a billion km3, it is the largest biome on Earth, yet only a tiny fraction of the biogeographic records include the bathypelagic fauna. This data gap served as the impetus for recent deepwater surveys, many of which have altered our perceptions of pelagic ecosystems. Here we examine data from four deep-pelagic (0-5000+ m) sampling programs in the Atlantic (60°N-25°S) in order to assess the character of bathypelagic fish communities with respect to faunal distinctiveness and ecological …

On The Private Provision Of Public Goods On Networks, Nizar Allouch
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper analyzes the private provision of public goods where consumers interact within a fixed network structure and may benefit only from their direct neighbors’ provisions. We present a proof for existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium with general best-reply functions. Our uniqueness result simultaneously extends similar results in Bergstrom, Blume, and Varian (1986) on the private provision of public goods to networks and Bramoullé, Kranton, and D'Amours (2011) on games of strategic substitutes to nonlinear best-reply functions. In addition, we investigate the neutrality result of Warr (1983) and Bergstrom, Blume, and Varian (1986) whereby consumers are able to …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Reciprocal Herkogamy In The Distylous Species, Hedyotis Caerulea (Rubiaceae), Dennis A. Sampson, Robert A. Krebs
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Hedyotis caerulea possesses two distinct floral morphs that are generally found in equal numbers in naturally occurring populations. Flowers either possess a relatively long style and short anthers, called a “pin,” or a short style and long anthers, called a “thrum.” This placement of reproductive organs is considered herkogamous and distylous, as it encourages outcrossing by restricting pollination to individuals of the alternate morph. Numerous species have been described as distylous without quantitative data establishing stigma-anther reciprocity. Here we assess those assumptions in H. caerulea by measuring stigma height, anther height and a suite of additional floral traits across multiple …

How Much Does This Tick You Off? Online Rejection And Criticism Lead To Negative Affect And Retaliatory Aggression, Gina Masullo Chen
Mass Communications - Dissertations
A three-condition (rejection, criticism, control) single-factor experiment (N = 77) on a mock social-networking site similar to Facebook reveals that even a slight rejection - not being allowed to join groups on the site - lead to increases in self-reported negative affect and retaliation against the site and the rejecting groups compared to a control. Subjects who were accepted into the groups but then criticized experienced the same increases in negative affect and retaliatory aggression, as those who were not allowed to join. In addition, men showed heightened retaliatory aggression compared to women and responded differently to criticism than women. …

Nitric Oxide Releasing Polymers For Vascular Graft Applications, Ifeanyi U. Onyejekwe
Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - Dissertations
Nitric oxide [NO] is an endogenous gas involved in a multitude of physiological functions, ranging from vasodilatation, inflammatory response to inhibition of platelet aggregation. Significant interest exists for therapeutic application of exogenous NO, particularly for the improvement of foreign-body responses of biomaterials. One challenge amongst several others that must be taken into consideration is NO's short half-life, ranging from 2-3 s, in physiological systems. Researchers have worked on synthesizing materials, formally referred to as NO donors/NONOates capable of preserving NO and spontaneous gas release upon contact with blood under physiological conditions. Two groups of these commercially available NO donors known …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Aging And Immune System Regulation In Drosophila., Ioannis Eleftherianos, Julio C. Castillo
Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications
Aging is a complex process that involves the accumulation of deleterious changes resulting in overall decline in several vital functions, leading to the progressive deterioration in physiological condition of the organism and eventually causing disease and death. The immune system is the most important host-defense mechanism in humans and is also highly conserved in insects. Extensive research in vertebrates has concluded that aging of the immune function results in increased susceptibility to infectious disease and chronic inflammation. Over the years, interest has grown in studying the molecular interaction between aging and the immune response to pathogenic infections. The fruit fly …

The mid-seicento in Italy witnessed a sustained proliferation of writers on art scattered throughout more regions than had been common in the previous century, leading to an era defined by arguments over the qualities and values of style.1 In the Preface for his Vite de 'pittori, scultori ed architetti of ca.1673-79, Giovanni Battista Passeri lamented the fact that: «Today it is fashionable for painters to do nothing but squabble among themselves about manner, taste, and style, and this arose because the reasoning is not established according to solid principles ».2 The querulous nature of the age has made it difficult …
