Resource Selection Models Are Useful In Predicting Fine-Scale Distributions Of Black-Footed Ferrets In Prairie Dog Colonies, David A. Eads, David S. Jachowski, Dean E. Biggins, Travis M. Livieri, Marc R. Matchett, Joshua J. Millspaugh

Western North American Naturalist

Wildlife-habitat relationships are often conceptualized as resource selection functions (RSFs)—models increasingly used to estimate species distributions and prioritize habitat conservation. We evaluated the predictive capabilities of 2 black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) RSFs developed on a 452-ha colony of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in the Conata Basin, South Dakota. We used the RSFs to project the relative probability of occurrence of ferrets throughout an adjacent 227-ha colony. We evaluated performance of the RSFs using ferret space use data collected via postbreeding spotlight surveys June–October 2005–2006. In home ranges and core areas, ferrets selected the predicted “very …

Challenges To Black-Footed Ferret Recovery: Protecting Prairie Dogs, Brian Miller, Richard P. Reading Aug 2012

Challenges To Black-Footed Ferret Recovery: Protecting Prairie Dogs, Brian Miller, Richard P. Reading

Western North American Naturalist

The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) recovery program is an example of single-species management to preserve flora and fauna. We argue that conservationists must move beyond that approach for success. In 1988, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed a down-listing goal of 1500 adult black-footed ferrets in 10 wild populations by 2010. The recovery program has only reached 23% of that goal. The overriding reason is the lack of regulatory mechanisms for poisoning and shooting prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) and our inability to control occurrence of plague (Yersinia pestis) in prairie dogs. We propose that …

Breeding System And Interaccessional Hybridization Of Purshia Tridentata Plants Grown In A Common Garden, Rosemary L. Pendleton, E. Durant Mcarthur, Stewart C. Sanderson Aug 2012

Breeding System And Interaccessional Hybridization Of Purshia Tridentata Plants Grown In A Common Garden, Rosemary L. Pendleton, E. Durant Mcarthur, Stewart C. Sanderson

Western North American Naturalist

Purshia spp. (Rosaceae) comprise a widespread western North American species complex that is important as landscape dominants, wildlife habitat, browse for wild and domestic ungulates, and seed reserves for small mammals. This study examined aspects of the phenology, compatibility, pollination biology, and progeny fruit characteristics of multiple accessions of bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), as well as a putative hybrid between bitterbrush and Purshia stansburiana. Except for open- and wind-pollination treatments, mass pollination was accomplished at anthesis within white paper sacks, which were used to isolate treatment branches. Bitterbrush appears to be largely self-incompatible and requires some agent, either wind …

Notes On The Distribution Of Bailey's Eastern Woodrat (Neotoma Floridana Baileyi) In Nebraska, Zebadiah R. Graham, Keith Geluso, Russell A. Benedict Aug 2012

Notes On The Distribution Of Bailey's Eastern Woodrat (Neotoma Floridana Baileyi) In Nebraska, Zebadiah R. Graham, Keith Geluso, Russell A. Benedict

Western North American Naturalist

The eastern woodrat (Neotoma floridana) occurs in eastern and central parts of the United States, with 3 subspecies inhabiting Nebraska. Herein, we report on distributional records of N. f. baileyi—an isolated, disjunct subspecies in north-central Nebraska. We searched for diagnostic sign of woodrats in 4 counties in Nebraska and 1 county in South Dakota. We obtained distributional records for N. f. baileyi east, west, and north of known distribution limits in Nebraska, but none in South Dakota. Most distributional records represent range extensions because of lack of prior mammalian surveys in those areas. Observations of woodrats in …

Evidence For An Historical Occurrence Of The Meadow Jumping Mouse (Zapus Hudsonius Luteus) In The Verde River Watershed, Arizona, Jennifer K. Frey Aug 2012

Evidence For An Historical Occurrence Of The Meadow Jumping Mouse (Zapus Hudsonius Luteus) In The Verde River Watershed, Arizona, Jennifer K. Frey

Western North American Naturalist

The meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius luteus) is a riparian obligate with a fragmented distribution in the American Southwest. Because of recent rapid declines in populations, it is a candidate for federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. In Arizona, its known distribution has been restricted to the White Mountains region in the east central part of the state. I present evidence for an historical occurrence of jumping mice in the Verde River watershed, Yavapai County, in west central Arizona. Evidence includes record of a specimen collected by Edgar Mearns in the 1880s, a 1944 report of parasites …

Efficacy Of Treatments Against Garlic Mustard (Alliaria Petiolata) And Effects On Forest Understory Plant Diversity, Lindsey M. Shartell, Linda M. Nagel, Andrew J. Storer Aug 2012

Efficacy Of Treatments Against Garlic Mustard (Alliaria Petiolata) And Effects On Forest Understory Plant Diversity, Lindsey M. Shartell, Linda M. Nagel, Andrew J. Storer

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Garlic mustard, an invasive exotic biennial herb, has been identified in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but is not yet widely distributed. We tested the effectiveness and impact of management tools for garlic mustard in northern hardwood forests. Six treatment types (no treatment control, hand-pull, herbicide, hand-pull/herbicide, scorch, and hand-pull/scorch) were applied within a northern hardwood forest invaded by garlic mustard. We sampled understory vegetation within plots to compare garlic mustard abundance (distinguishing first and second year plants) and native plant diversity before and after treatment. Results immediately following treatment indicated that garlic mustard seedling abundance was significantly reduced by …

Effects Of Invasion By The Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Carbon Transformations In A Great Lakes Marsh, Shawn Trevor Duke Aug 2012

Effects Of Invasion By The Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) On Carbon Transformations In A Great Lakes Marsh, Shawn Trevor Duke

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a highly productive invasive grass that alters the wetland physiochemical environment and produces toxic secondary metabolites. Plant litter decomposition, effects of water level on soil microbes, and soil microbial response to leachate additions were investigated in Phragmites invaded and pre-invaded Typha sites. Less litter mass was lost from Phragmites than Typha in both sites during the initial 144 days. Annual mass loss from both species’ litter was greater in the Phragmites site. Lower water levels resulted in greater CO2 than CH4 production in both Phragmites and Typha soils. Higher water …

High Throughput Sequencing Reveals Novel And Abiotic Stress-Regulated Micrornas In The Inflorescences Of Rice, Blanca E. Barrera-Figueroa, Lei Gao, Zhigang Wu, Xuefeng Zhou, Jianhua Zhu, Hailing Jin, Renyi Liu, Jian-Kang Zhu

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Background

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules that play important regulatory roles in plant development and stress responses. Identification of stress-regulated miRNAs is crucial for understanding how plants respond to environmental stimuli. Abiotic stresses are one of the major factors that limit crop growth and yield. Whereas abiotic stress-regulated miRNAs have been identified in vegetative tissues in several plants, they are not well studied in reproductive tissues such as inflorescences.

Results

We used Illumina deep sequencing technology to sequence four small RNA libraries that were constructed from the inflorescences of rice plants that were grown under control condition and drought, …

The Role Of Individual Behavior Type In Mediating Indirect Interactions, Blaine D. Griffen, Benjamin J. Toscano, John Gatto Aug 2012

The Role Of Individual Behavior Type In Mediating Indirect Interactions, Blaine D. Griffen, Benjamin J. Toscano, John Gatto

Faculty Publications

Trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMII) play an important role in structuring natural communities, and numerous studies have experimentally demonstrated their presence in a variety of systems. However, these studies have largely examined the presence or absence of traits that are responsible for these interactions, without considering natural variation between individuals in the extent to which these traits are manifested. We used a well-documented TMII to investigate the importance of individual behavior type for determining the strength of the TMII. The toadfish Opsanus tau has an indirect positive influence on bivalve survival because the mud crab Panopeus herbstii, a consumer of bivalves, …

Notes On Behaviors Of Free-Ranging Black-Footed Ferrets: Conata Basin, South Dakota, 2007–2009, David A. Eads

Western North American Naturalist

During 2007–2009 in the Conata Basin, South Dakota, field studies provided opportunities to accumulate incidental observations of wild-born black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) and their interactions with other species. Here, I describe maternal behaviors by female ferrets; interactions between a female ferret and a rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis); and attacks by ferrets on a horned lark (Eremophila alpestris), a deer mouse (Peromyscus sp.), and a cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus sp.). Additionally, I present hypotheses for future testing and discuss conservation implications.

Essential Spawning Habitat For Atlantic Sturgeon In The James River, Virginia., Geoffrey Austin Aug 2012

Essential Spawning Habitat For Atlantic Sturgeon In The James River, Virginia., Geoffrey Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Substrate composition plays a critical role in determining the spawning success of Atlantic sturgeon. A benthic analysis of the tidal freshwater portion of the James River, Virginia, was performed to locate and protect remaining sturgeon spawning habitat within the James River system. I modeled structural habitat, substrate distribution, and river bathymetry from Richmond, Virginia to the Appomattox River confluence. A classification model was developed to describe the dominant substrate type (mud/silt, sand, gravel, bedrock) using side scan sonar data collected from August 2011-Febuary 2012. River depth, bottom imagery, substrate density (hardness), and ground truth substrate samples were interpolated into a …

Sorafenib Enhances Pemetrexed-Induced Cytotoxicity Through And Autophagy-Dependent Mechanism In Cancer Cells, Bareford Mary Aug 2012

Sorafenib Enhances Pemetrexed-Induced Cytotoxicity Through And Autophagy-Dependent Mechanism In Cancer Cells, Bareford Mary

Theses and Dissertations

Acquired cellular resistance to traditional chemotherapeutics is a common obstacle in the treatment of most cancer cell types. This resistance occurs as a result of changes in the underlying molecular mechanisms of disease progression. The development of novel chemotherapeutic approaches designed to enhance the efficacy of protypical anti-cancer drugs is important in order to overcome this issue. Such approaches will aid in understanding the biomolecular phenomena responsible for drug resistance and disease progression. Combining signaling pathway inhibitors has become an effective strategy for enhancing tumor cell death by targeting multiple pathways known to regulate cell survival. Pemetrexed, an FDA-approved anti-folate …

Black-Footed Ferrets And Recreational Shooting Influence The Attributes Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Burrows, Dean E. Biggins, Shantini Ramakrishnan, Amanda R. Goldberg, David A. Eads Aug 2012

Black-Footed Ferrets And Recreational Shooting Influence The Attributes Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Burrows, Dean E. Biggins, Shantini Ramakrishnan, Amanda R. Goldberg, David A. Eads

Western North American Naturalist

Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) plug burrows occupied by black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes), and they also plug burrows to entomb dead prairie dogs. We further evaluated these phenomena by sampling connectivity and plugging of burrow openings on prairie dog colonies occupied by ferrets, colonies where recreational shooting was allowed, and colonies with neither shooting nor ferrets. We counted burrow openings on line surveys and within plots, classified surface plugging, and used an air blower to examine subsurface connectivity. Colonies with ferrets had lower densities of openings, fewer connected openings (suggesting increased subsurface plugging), and more surface …

Testing A Pyroclimatic Hypothesis On The Mexico-United States Border, Peter Z. Fule, Larissa L. Yocom Kent, Citlali Cortes Montano, Donald A. Falk, Julian Cerano, Jose Villanueva-Diaz

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The “pyroclimatic hypothesis” proposed by F. Biondi and colleagues provides a basis for testable expectations about climatic and other controls of fire regimes. This hypothesis asserts an a priori relationship between the occurrence of widespread fire and values of a relevant climatic index. Such a hypothesis provides the basis for predicting spatial and temporal patterns of fire occurrence based on climatic control. Forests near the Mexico–United States border offer a place to test the relative influence of climatic and other controls in mountain ranges that are ecologically similar and subject to broadly similar top-down climatic influence, but with differing cultural …

Managing Information: Lessons For The 21st Century, Robert Hallis

SIDLIT Conference

Managing Information has become a buzz-word in objectives and courses, but how does this differ from "Library Instruction?" In an age where students are expected to demonstrate their familiarity with a topic through assessments other than a term paper, Information Literacy becomes more than learning traditional library skills. Library instruction typically involves showing students how to find peer reviewed articles for an academic paper. However, students are writing fewer papers and demonstrating their competence through their use of a growing array of social media; including discussion boards, mashups, and Skype. Acceptable sources have moved from merely published peer-reviewed scholarly documents …

Evolution Of Nuclear Integrations Of The Mitochondrial Genome In Great Apes And Their Potential As Molecular Markers, Ivan D. Soto-Calderon Aug 2012

Evolution Of Nuclear Integrations Of The Mitochondrial Genome In Great Apes And Their Potential As Molecular Markers, Ivan D. Soto-Calderon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The mitochondrial control region (MCR) has played an important role as a population genetic marker in many taxa but sequencing of complete eukaryotic genomes has revealed that nuclear integrations of mitochondrial DNA (numts) are abundant and widespread across many taxa. If left undetected, numts can inflate mitochondrial diversity and mislead interpretation of phylogenetic relationships. Comparative analyses of complete genomes in humans, orangutans and chimpanzees, and preliminary studies in gorillas have revealed high numt prevalence in great apes, but rigorous comparative analyses across taxa have been lacking.

The present study aimed to systematically compare the evolutionary dynamics of MCR numts in …

Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Cannabinoid Antagonist, Abha Verma Aug 2012

Design, Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Cannabinoid Antagonist, Abha Verma

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study was aimed at the development of novel CB1 cannabinoid receptor antagonists that may have clinical applications for the treatment of cannabinoid and psychostimulant addiction. The rationale for the design for our target was to incorporate a bioisosteric 1,2,3-triazole ring into the vicinal diaryl group revealed in the prototypical antagonist/inverse agonist SR141716 (Rimonabant) that was presumed to interact with a unique region in the CB1 receptors. Based on our preliminary results we identified a novel series of 1,2,3-triazole ester and keto derivatives as lead compounds for biological evaluation. Here in the design rationale, synthesis and CB1 receptor affinity for …
