Bill To Protect Sierra Caral Remains Stalled In Congress, Louisa Reynolds

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

This article discusses the conservation efforts to protect Sierra Caral, the most biodiverse forest remnant in Guatemala, from severe deforestation. This is occurring largely due to the forced displacement of campesinos by narco-ranchers in the Motagua Valley. In addition, the article provides the bill's aspects and an in-depth look at what the Sierra Caral conservationists are proposing in their efforts to be sensitive to the displaced residents.

Determining Carbon Abatement Cost Through The Integration Of Remotely Sensed Land Cover Observations And Biogeochemical Model, Keshav Bhattarai Oct 2012

Determining Carbon Abatement Cost Through The Integration Of Remotely Sensed Land Cover Observations And Biogeochemical Model, Keshav Bhattarai

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper estimates the economic returns of carbon abatement through biological sequestration in the forests of Nepal under future REDD policy. Using sequential remotely sensed land cover observations and a biogeochemical model, this paper attempts to estimate the contemporary and future ecosystem carbon trends. The paper applies the General Ensemble Biogeochemical Modeling System (GEMS) and examines how effective carbon sequestration can be through a sustainable forest management approach. This study uses a case example of the Bara district of Nepal for the period of 1970-2010.

Sleep Disturbance Implications For Modern Military Operations, Douglas R. Lindsay, Jeff Dyche Oct 2012

Sleep Disturbance Implications For Modern Military Operations, Douglas R. Lindsay, Jeff Dyche

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

As is evident from current military operations that are happening around the globe (e.g., Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea), today’s military is being called on in numerous new and innovative ways (e.g., Foster & Lindsay, 2011). One of the primary forces behind this change is the pervasiveness of enhanced information systems. In fact, the concept of networked warfare is the basis of operations and doctrine for the armed forces (Wesensten, Belenky, & Balkin, 2005). With respect to Admiral Cebrowski’s quote, it appears that this notion of information in warfare is going to continue to influence the way that we approach and conduct …

Mutant P53 Regulation Of Cxc-Chemokine Expression In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Brittany Field Oct 2012

Mutant P53 Regulation Of Cxc-Chemokine Expression In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Brittany Field

Theses and Dissertations

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the 6th most common type of cancer in the western hemisphere with a five-year survival rate of only 50% for patients with a localized tumor, which decreases significantly to as low as 5% for those patients with tumors that have metastasized to distant sites of the body. It has been found that both mutant p53 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathways function to increase the expression of CXCL5, which has been identified as a key mediator in the process of tumor metastasis. Previous data from our lab suggested that the …

Research outputs 2012

Background: Older adults free of dementia but with subjective memory complaints (SMC) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are considered at increased risk of cognitive decline. Vascular risk factors (VRF), including hypertension, heart disease, smoking, hypercholesterolemia and lack of physical activity (PA) have been identified as modifiable risk factors contributing to cognitive decline, and white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are associated with VRF, SMC and cognitive impairment. Findings from a growing number of clinical trials with older adults are providing strong evidence for the benefits of physical activity for maintaining cognitive function, but few studies are investigating these benefits in high-risk populations. …

Trends And Practices Of Seeking Online Information Sources: The Case Of Science Faculties Of A Developing Country, Muzammil Tahira, Kanwal Ameen, Rosa Alinda Alias

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Purpose – This study reports the trends and practices of seeking online information sources of Science faculties of a university of developing country. The focus was to explore their trends and practices of accessing and using online sources in both modes, i.e. Open Access (OA) and Subscribed Access (SA) to meet their academic and research information.

Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative design of research, based on a self-completion structured questionnaire survey was used. Surveyed population consisted of whole full time S&T teachers working in the 25 institutions/colleges/departments of all four S&T faculties viz. Sciences, Life Science, Engineering & Technology and Pharmacy of …
