Oxidized Quinones Signal Onset Of Darkness Directly To The Cyanobacterial Circadian Oscillator, Yong Ick Kim, David J. Vinyard, Gennady M. Ananyev, G. Charles Dismukes, Susan S. Golden

Synchronization of the circadian clock in cyanobacteria with the day/night cycle proceeds without an obvious photoreceptor, leaving open the question of its specific mechanism. The circadian oscillator can be reconstituted in vitro,where the activities of two of its proteins, KaiA and KaiC, are affected by metabolites that reflect photosynthetic activity: KaiC phosphorylation is directly influenced by the ATP/ADP ratio, and KaiA stimulation of KaiC phosphorylation is blocked by oxidized, but not reduced, quinones. Manipulation of the ATP/ADP ratio can reset the timing of KaiC phosphorylation peaks in the reconstituted in vitro oscillator. Here, we show that pulses of oxidized quinones …

This is evident by the vast amount of literature dedicated to workplace learning, however very little research to date has explored the impact of international culinary internships on students. This paper addresses the void in research by exploring the nuances associated with culinary internships and in particular investigates the 2006 and 2007 student cohorts studying in the Technological University Dublin for the degree award of BA in Culinary Arts. Defects in the human BLM gene cause Bloom syndrome, notable for early development of tumors in a broad variety of tissues. On the basis of sequence similarity, BLM has been identified as one of the five human homologs of RecQ from Escherichia coli. Nevertheless, biochemical characterization of the BLM protein indicates far greater functional similarity to the E. coli RecG protein and there is no known RecG homolog in human cells. BACKGROUND: Since their discovery, the morphology of microglia has been interpreted to mirror their function, with ramified microglia constantly surveying the micro-environment and rapidly activating when changes occur. In 1899, Franz Nissl discovered what we now recognize as a distinct microglial activation state, microglial rod cells (Stäbchenzellen), which he observed adjacent to neurons. These rod-shaped microglia are typically found in human autopsy cases of paralysis of the insane, a disease of the pre-penicillin era, and best known today from HIV-1-infected brains. Microglial rod cells have been implicated in cortical 'synaptic stripping' but their exact role has remained unclear. This is …

Ivermectin is currently approved for treatment of both clinical and veterinary infections by nematodes, including Onchocerca cervicalis in horses and Onchocerca volvulus in humans. However, ivermectin has never been shown to be effective against bacterial pathogens. Here we show that ivermectin also inhibits infection of epithelial cells by the bacterial pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, at doses that could be envisioned clinically for sexually-transmitted or ocular infections by Chlamydia.

The legal structure in a given country affects the mechanisms through which that country can promote renewable power technologies. Federalist forms of government denote a system in which political sovereignty is constitutionally divided between a central federal authority and constituent states or provinces. Such federalist forms of government describe several large and established countries, such as the United States, Germany, India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, and Switzerland. Renewable energy policy at the state level, in countries with a federalist form of government, can be complex and varied.

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 367-378, 2012. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions with serious health consequences. Techniques used to measure body fat (BF) yield variable BF estimates, and this variability may lead to underestimation or overestimation of BF and subsequent treatment options. The measurements that are most accurate (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and Air Displacement Plethysmography (ADP)) are expensive and often unavailable. RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Limited information is available on the impact of pasture management regimes on the local arthropod community. The objectives of this study were to identify the insect orders and families associated with managed smooth bromegrass pastures and determine the effect of three management strategies on the abundance and occurrence of 4 key beetle groups. Pitfall samples were collected weekly from June 2 until September 2during the summer of 2010. Sixty-one families of insects, representing nine orders, were collected in the traps. A predatory ground beetle in the genus Cyclotrachelus made up 71.5% of all target beetles collected. No significant differences were …

For 90 years investigators (including George Whipple) have been unable to propagate the microbe responsible for Whipple’s disease, despite many published and probably many more unpublished attempts.¹ Evidence that a bacterium causes Whipple’s disease has accumulated in recent decades. Light and electron microscopy show rod-shaped bacilli in the affected tissues of these patients, usually free in the lamina propria of the small bowel but also as partly degraded structures within macrophage vacuoles.² On the basis of histology, investigators have suggested that these organisms propagate extracellularly,³ although intact organisms have been detected within several types of cells.^{4 …}

Fascaplysin is a cytotoxic natural product isolated from a variety of Indo-Pacific marine organisms, primarily Fascaplysinopsis sponges and Didemnum tunicates. Positive xenograft studies involving this alkaloid structural class have indicated that fascaplysin may serve as an important lead compound for preclinical development. This study was undertaken as a prelude to a full pharmacokinetics and therapeutic assessment of fascaplysin. We describe here a simple plasma preparation and a rapid HPLC method for the detection of fascaplysin in mice. The method was validated by parameters including good linear correlation, a limit of quantification of 107.1 μg/ mL, and a good precision with …

Ionomics Atlas facilitates access, analysis and interpretation of an existing large-scale heterogeneous dataset consisting of ionomic (elemental composition of an organism), ge- netic (heritable changes in the DNA of an organism) and ge- ographic information (geographic location, altitude, climate, soil properties, etc). Ionomics Atlas allows connections to be made between the genetic regulation of the ionome of plant populations and their landscape distribution, allowing scientists to investigate the role of natural ionomic variation in adaptation of populations to varied environmental conditions in the landscape. The National Science Foundation has funded a synthesis study on the status, contributions, and future direction of discipline‐based education research (DBER) in physics, biological sciences, geosciences, and chemistry. DBER combines knowledge of teaching and learning with deep knowledge of disciplinespecific science content. It describes the discipline‐specific difficulties learners face and the specialized intellectual and instructional resources that can facilitate student understanding.
