Reasonable Men?, Ann C. Mcginley Nov 2012

Reasonable Men?, Ann C. Mcginley

Scholarly Works

After the Supreme Court recognized sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination under Title VII, lower courts used the reasonable person standard to measure whether the behavior was sufficiently severe or pervasive to constitute a hostile working environment. Cultural and radical feminists objected to the reasonable person measure, and many supported a reasonable woman standard, which the Ninth Circuit adopted. Because of its tendency to essentialize how women would react, many feminists soon abandoned their support for the standard. A number of circuits, however, continue to use the reasonable woman or reasonable victim standards.

The actin cytoskeleton is a dynamic structure that coordinates numerous fundamental processes in eukaryotic cells. Dozens of actin-binding proteins are known to be involved in the regulation of actin filament organization or turnover and many of these are stimulus-response regulators of phospholipid signaling. One of these proteins is the heterodimeric actin-capping protein (CP) which binds the barbed end of actin filaments with high affinity and inhibits both addition and loss of actin monomers at this end. The ability of CP to bind filaments is regulated by signaling phospholipids, which inhibit the activity of CP; however, the exact mechanism of this …

The role of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression is well established, however the regulatory mechanisms modulating this phenomenon remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that transcription factor glioma-associated oncogene 1 (GLI1) modulates EMT through direct up-regulation of SNAI1 and serves as a downstream effector of the transforming growth factor-b1 (TGFb1) pathway, a well-known regulator of EMT in cancer cells. Overexpression of GLI1 increased proliferation, viability, migration, invasion, and colony formation by HCC cells. Conversely, GLI1 knockdown led to a decrease in all the above-mentioned cancer-associated phenotypes in HCC cells. Further analysis of GLI1 regulated cellular functions showed …

Collecting To The Core — Psychology Handbooks, Donald J. Polzella, Anne Doherty Nov 2012

Collecting To The Core — Psychology Handbooks, Donald J. Polzella, Anne Doherty

Psychology Faculty Publications

The American Psychological Association (APA), which publishes several specialized handbooks, describes them as “one-stop shop[s] for both overviews and in-depth analyses of a variety of sub-fields within psychology.” In general, upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty scholars consult handbooks for different reasons. Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students sometimes read handbook chapters for a course or seminar. (In my experience, most lower-level undergraduates find the style and content of handbook chapters bewildering.) Undergraduate honors students and, especially, graduate students may consult handbook chapters when they begin to work on their theses or dissertations, because the chapters provide authoritative reviews of relevant …

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta Nov 2012

Monte Carlo Simulations Of The Clean And Disordered Contact Process In Three Dimensions, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The absorbing-state transition in the three-dimensional contact process with and without quenched randomness is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. In the clean case, a reweighting technique is combined with a careful extrapolation of the data to infinite time to determine with high accuracy the critical behavior in the three-dimensional directed percolation universality class. In the presence of quenched spatial disorder, our data demonstrate that the absorbing-state transition is governed by an unconventional infinite-randomness critical point featuring activated dynamical scaling. The critical behavior of this transition does not depend on the disorder strength, i.e., it is universal. Close to …

Docking System Design And Self-Assembly Control Of Distributed Swarm Flying Robots, Hongxing Wei, Ning Li, Yong Tao, Youdong Chen, Jindong Tan

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper presents a novel docking system design and the distributed self-assembly control strategy for a Distributed Swarm Flying Robot (DSFR). The DSFR is a swarm robot comprising many identical robot modules that are able to move on the ground, dock with each other and fly coordinately once self-assembled into a robotic structure. A generalized adjacency matrix method is proposed to describe the configurations of robotic structures. Based on the docking system and the adjacency matrix, experiments are performed to demonstrate and verify the self-assembly control strategy.

Chromatin insulator elements and associated proteins have been proposed to partition eukaryotic genomes into sets of independently regulated domains. Here we test this hypothesis by quantitative genome-wide analysis of insulator protein binding to Drosophila chromatin. We find distinct combinatorial binding of insulator proteins to different classes of sites and uncover a novel type of insulator element that binds CP190 but not any other known insulator proteins. Functional characterization of different classes of binding sites indicates that only a small fraction act as robust insulators in standard enhancer-blocking assays. We show that insulators restrict the spreading of the H3K27me3 mark but …

Background— The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is complex and the need to identify molecular biomarkers is critical. Epithelial cells play a central role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. We previously identified five “signature” biomarkers in colonic epithelial cells (CEC) that are predictive of disease phenotype in Crohn's disease. Here we investigate the ability of CEC biomarkers to define the mechanism and severity of intestinal inflammation.

Methods— We analyzed the expression of RelA, A20, pIgR, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2 in CEC of mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) acute colitis or T-cell-mediated chronic colitis. …

And AICR Annual Meeting, November 1-2, 2012.

Dietary zinc (Zn) deficiency (ZD) in rats induces an inflammatory gene signature that fuels esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). Using nanoStringTM technology, we show that the inflammation is accompanied by altered expression of specific microRNAs in esophagus, as well as skin, lung, pancreas, liver, prostate, and PBMC, predictive of disease development. Particularly, the ZD esophagus has a microRNA signature resembling human ESCC/tongue SCC miRNAomes with overexpression of miR-31 and miR-21 and downregulation of their respective tumor suppressor targets PPP2R2A and …

Phylogenetic Engineering Of The Ribulose-1,5-Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase Large Subunit In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Boon Hoe Lim

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Thirty-four residues in the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) may account for the kinetic differences between Rubisco enzyme from green algae and land plants. By substituting these "phylogenetic residues" as groups and combinations of groups in the large subunit of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with those of land-plant Rubisco, the functions and relationships of these "phylogenetic groups" were determined.

A phylogenetic-group substitution at the base of catalytic loop 6 of the large subunit decreases the CO2/O2 specificity of the enzyme, but function is restored by a further phylogenetic-group substitution at the carboxy-terminal tail. Therefore, these …

What Brings You Pleasure? The Role Of Desire Within The Development Of Compulsive Purchasing, Justine Rapp Nov 2012

What Brings You Pleasure? The Role Of Desire Within The Development Of Compulsive Purchasing, Justine Rapp

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This paper seeks to put forth two major contributions into marketing scholarship: (1) the role of desire within the development of compulsivity from impulsive consumptions, and (2) an assessment of compulsivity measurement scales. A mixed method design provides for both statistical and qualitative support for both contributions, for a deeper and replicated account of consumer behavior within the marketplace. First, we develop a possible path for the development of compulsivity, explaining impulsivity as an antecedent with consumer shopping desire as the driving factor. With this, we introduce the variable Consumer Shopping Desire as a quantified construct related to Belk et …

Group Testing Regression Models, Boan Zhang Nov 2012

Group Testing Regression Models, Boan Zhang

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Group testing, where groups of individual specimens are composited to test for the presence or absence of a disease (or some other binary characteristic), is a procedure commonly used to reduce the costs of screening a large number of individuals. Statistical research in group testing has traditionally focused on a homogeneous population, where individuals are assumed to have the same probability of having a disease. However, individuals often have different risks of positivity, so recent research has examined regression models that allow for heterogeneity among individuals within the population. This dissertation focuses on two problems involving group testing regression models. …
