Exploring Health Disparities For Children In The City Of Milwaukee, Mark Edwin Anderson
Exploring Health Disparities For Children In The City Of Milwaukee, Mark Edwin Anderson
All ETDs from UAB
This study investigated whether school-based oral health programs as a public policy intervention increased dental sealant applications among children from low-income families and minorities in public schools in inner city Milwaukee. By using a difference-in-differences analysis, we examined pre-post time frames, 2001-2003 and 2008-2009, to determine sealant application usage in public schools in nine inner city Milwaukee zip codes after the intervention of a public policy initiative to expand school-based oral health programs with the expressed intent of increasing placement of dental sealants in children at high risk for dental decay and disease. Results of a binary logistic regression revealed …

Finding A Cure For Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (Veev) Infection: The Search For The Antiviral Genes And Vaccine Development., Svetlana Atasheva
All ETDs from UAB
Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a re-emerging virus that causes a severe and often fatal disease in equids and humans. To date, despite a continuous public health threat, no vaccines or antiviral drugs against VEEV infection have been developed for human use. In this study we took advantage of accumulated knowledge of capsid protein function in viral replication, assembly and virus-host interactions. Besides being an integral part of the virion, capsid protein is the major determinant of VEEV pathogenesis. This protein is cytotoxic and induces cellular transcriptional shutoff as a countermeasure to the cellular antiviral response. We introduced targeted …

Exonerations In The United States, 1989-2012: Report By The National Registry Of Exonerations, Samuel R. Gross, Michael Shaffer
Other Publications
This report is about 873 exonerations in the United States, from January 1989 through February 2012. Behind each is a story, and almost all are tragedies. The tragedies are not limited to the exonerated defendants themselves, or to their families and friends. In most cases they were convicted of vicious crimes in which other innocent victims were killed or brutalized. Many of the victims who survived were traumatized all over again, years later, when they learned that the criminal who had attacked them had not been caught and punished after all, and that they themselves may have played a role …

Frankenfoods: Are We Bioengineering Our Children And What Can Curriculum Do?, Patra Rickman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation I explore the effect of biotechnology and food production on children’s physical and mental health. What we eat affects our well-being and unknowingly, we have little control of what exactly we are consuming. Children have even less control and feel the effects of additives and chemicals more than adults. Many of the effects of bioengineered foods are unknown at this time. My dissertation will be a theoretical exploration of biotechnology in food using a bioethical critical perspective. I use my personal experience and research to examine the effects of processed and genetically engineered foods on people, especially …

Theory has recognized a combination of niche and neutral processes each contributing, with varying importance, to species coexistence. However, long-term persistence of rare species has been difficult to produce in trait-based models of coexistence that incorporate stochastic dynamics, raising questions about how rare species persist despite such variability. Following recent evidence that rare species may experience significantly different population dynamics than dominant species, we use a plant community model to simulate the effect of disproportionately strong negative frequency dependence on the long-term persistence of the rare species in a simulated community. This strong self-limitation produces long persistence times for the …

The embryonic development and time to hatching of eggs can be highly adaptive in some species, and thus under selective pressure. In this study, we examined the underlying interfamily variation in hatching timing and embryonic development in a population of an oviparous amphibian, the rough-skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). We found significant, high variability in degree of embryonic development and hatching timing among eggs from different females. Patterns of variation were present regardless of temperature. We also could not explain the differences among families by morphological traits of the females or their eggs. This study suggests that the variation necessary for natural …

Yin Yang Bipolar Atom - An Eastern Road Toward Quantum Gravity, Wen-Ran Zhang
Yin Yang Bipolar Atom - An Eastern Road Toward Quantum Gravity, Wen-Ran Zhang
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Based on bipolar dynamic logic and bipolar quantum linear algebra, a causal theory of YinYang bipolar atom is introduced in a completely background independent geometry that transcends spacetime. The causal theory leads to an equilibrium-based super symmetrical quantum cosmology of negative-positive energies. It is contended that the new theory has opened an Eastern road toward quantum gravity with bipolar logical unifications of particle and wave, matter and antimatter, relativity and quantum entanglement. Information recovery after a black hole is discussed. It is shown that not only can the new theory be applied in physical worlds but also in logical, mental, …

The Effects Of Personal Protective Respirators On Human Motor, Visual, And Cognitive Skills, Anas Ahmed Alghamri
Doctoral Dissertations
"In oxygen-deficient or toxic environments in which controlling the hazard is not feasible, workers wear personal protective respirators. Hazard controls include but are not limited to engineering controls, such as ventilation, and substituting less hazardous materials. However, respirator selection and the design of tasks that require respirators are critical issues. Understanding the effects of respirators on human abilities is critical to respirator selection and therefore to the safety and efficiency of workers. This research investigated the effect of respirators on human abilities. A review of the relevant literature was conducted, revealing that respirators can affect physiological, psychological, motor, and visual …
Hollow Hydroxyapatite Microspheres As Devices For Controlled Delivery Of Proteins And As Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering, Hailuo Fu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Hollow HA microspheres were prepared by converting Li₂O-CaO-B₂O₃ glass microspheres in a K₂HPO₄ solution. Process parameters, such as reaction temperature (25°C-60°C) and concentration of the phosphate solution (0.02-0.25 M) significantly influenced the microstructure of the hollow HA microspheres. Microspheres with the largest hollow core size were obtained at lower temperature or with low K₂HPO₄ concentration. In comparison, microspheres with high surface area (~140 m²/g) were obtained at higher K₂HPO₄ concentration (0.25 M). Upon heat treatment (up to 900°C), the surface area of the hollow HA microspheres decreased (from ~100 m²/g to ~2 m²/g), and the rupture strength increased (from ~11 …

Investigation Of Biomarkers For Noninvasive Early Diagnosis Of Cancer, Sanjeewa Bandara Gamagedara
Doctoral Dissertations
"Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 12 million deaths in 2030. Cancer occurs when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. It develops very rapidly, and early diagnosis offers a greater chance of successful treatment and a higher survival rate. Biomarkers are good potential tools for early diagnosis. The main hypothesis of this study is that the levels of certain metabolites present in human urine can indicate the current or future behavior of cancer. Therefore, these studies focused …

Glycerin Reformation In High Temperature And Pressure Water, Jason W. Picou
Doctoral Dissertations
"The noncatalytic reformation of glycerin in supercritical water was studied in a Haynes 282 tubular reactor. In order to determine which parameters were the most influential, a 2³ experimental matrix was conducted, with temperatures of 500 and 700⁰C, water/glycerin molar ratios of 3:1 and 13:1, and residence times of 30 and 90 seconds, all at a pressure of 24 MPa. It was found that temperature had the largest effect on the two gasification parameters deemed most important, gasification percentage and hydrogen yield. Based on this, the effect of temperature was further investigated by looking at 5⁰C intervals from 500 to …

Organoclay Dispersion In Linear Low-Density Polyethylene And Maleated Linear Low-Density Polyethylene Via Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processing, Matthew J. Factor
Doctoral Dissertations
"Research into polymer-clay nanocomposites (PCN's) has been ongoing for decades as a result of the property enhancements offered by clay. To fully exploit these property enhancements, organically modified clays (organoclays) are utilized to promote clay delamination by reducing the disparity between the hydrophilicity of the clay and the hydrophobicity of the highly used polyolefin polymer. Since the organic modification of organoclays can degrade at temperatures typical to many polymers during melt-mix processing, this work utilizes the low-temperature processing fluid supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) to disperse an organoclay into the highly used polymer LLDPE and ascertains the associated processing conditions for …

Periodic Q-Difference Equations, Rotchana Chieochan
Doctoral Dissertations
"The concept of periodic functions defined on the real numbers or on the integers is a classical topic and has been studied intensively, yielding numerous applications in every kind of science. It is of importance that the real numbers and the integers are closed with respect to addition. However, for a number q > 1, the so-called q-time scale, i.e., the set of nonnegative integer powers of q, is not closed with respect to addition, and therefore it was not possible to define periodic functions on the q-time scale in an obvious way. In this thesis, this important open problem has …

Complex Scaling Behavior In Animal Foraging Patterns, Prabhavi Kaushalya Premachandra
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation attempts to answer questions from two different areas of biology, ecology and neuroscience, using physics-based techniques. In Section 2, suitability of three competing random walk models is tested to describe the emergent movement patterns of two species of primates. The truncated power law (power law with exponential cut off) is the most suitable random walk model that characterizes the emergent movement patterns of these primates. In Section 3, an agent-based model is used to simulate search behavior in different environments (landscapes) to investigate the impact of the resource landscape on the optimal foraging movement patterns of deterministic foragers. …
An Improved Dipole-Moment Model Based On Near-Field Scanning For Characterizing Near-Field Coupling And Far-Field Radiation From An Ic, Zhenwei Yu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) problems are critical issues in wireless platform design. The accurate noise model of integrated circuits (ICs) is needed to help designers to diagnose and predict RFI problems. In this dissertation, an improved IC radiated emission model based on near-field measurements is proposed. The regularization technique and the truncated SVD method are employed together with the least square method to calculate the dipole moments from the near-field data. This dipole model has clear physical meaning: the electric and magnetic dipoles represent the voltage and the current in the circuit, respectively. One application of this dipole model is …

Exposure To Perfluoroalkyl Chemicals And Its Relation To Serum Lipids, Serum Uric Acid, And Blood Pressure Levels In Children., Sarah Dee Geiger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: PFCs are manmade chemicals that are very pervasive in the US. They have been found to be present in the blood of more than 98% of Americans and have a long half-life. Studies have shown that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) have endocrine-disrupting properties and exposure is positively associated with serum lipids, serum uric acid, reproductive effects, low birth weight and cancers, among other negative health effects. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide and risk factors include dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, and hypertension. In this context, we examined the association between PFOA and PFOS and serum …
X-Ray Crystallography For The Study Of Nickel And Iron Salicylaldimines, Carla Schmiesing Eribal
X-Ray Crystallography For The Study Of Nickel And Iron Salicylaldimines, Carla Schmiesing Eribal
Doctoral Dissertations
"X-ray diffraction of single crystals has developed dramatically over the last century by combining fundamental theories of light, diffraction, and statistics to generate the complete, geometric structure of molecules. The quality of the resulting X -ray structure data are reported in R₁ < 5%, wR2 < 12% and a goodness of fit value of one. This technique was applied specifically to the evaluation of the spin crossover (SCO) compound [Fe(salpm)₂]BF₄ʺ0.5EtOH and how the molecule's geometry changed during a two-step thermal LS-HS conversion. The crystal structure was measured at 100,175,225, and 296 K to yield final R₁ values of 0.047, 0.054, 0.051, and 0.058, respectively. The coordination bond lengths show the spin transitions occur between 100-175K at one crystallographically unique Fe and between 175-225K at the other Fe site. No strong long range interactions are found, suggesting a gradual spin transition. Reaction ofNi(Nalkyl-sal)₂ complexes with Ni(N0₃)₂ form either nickel dimeric, [Ni₃(Rsal)(N0₃)(MeOH)]₂ or trinuclear complexes, Ni₃(Rsal)₄(N0₃)₂. The binuclear complexes, with orthogonal bridging ligands, show overall ferromagnetic interactions. The crystal structures for Ni₃(Rsal)₄(N0₃)₂ from methyl to benzyl were solved and indicate no steric restriction on formation for the series. The trinuclear compounds form an isosceles triangle of metal atoms with the isopropyl analog showing an overall antiferromagnetic interaction with J=+11.386 and J23=-13.891. Lastly, xanthene spirolactam derivatives were structurally analyzed to determine binding modes for their selective and sensitive (µM) detection of metals Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺ and the nerve gas mimic, dichlorophosphate"--Abstract, page iii.

Economics And Finance On Time Scales, Julius Severin Heim
Doctoral Dissertations
"This thesis consists of 6 papers that investigate models in economics and finance based on so-called dynamic equations on time scales. The first paper covers multiplier-accelerator models that can be described by linear second-order dynamic equations. The possibility of taxes as well as the possibility of foreign trade is taken into consideration. The second paper discusses cobweb models, which describe cyclical supply and demand in markets, where the supply is determined before the observation of the price. Cobweb models that can be formulated with first-order linear, second-order linear, and nonlinear dynamic equations are being considered. The third and fourth papers …
