A Hemoglobin-Based Multifunctional Therapeutic: Polynitroxylated Pegylated Hemoglobin, Carleton C. J. Hsia, Li Ma

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Polynitroxylated pegylated hemoglobin (PNPH) as a multifunctional therapeutic takes advantage of the ability of hemoglobin (Hb) to transport oxygen, the antioxidative stress activities from the redox coupling of nitroxide and heme iron, and the hypercolloid properties of pegylation. The published preclinical data demonstrating that PNPH acts as a neurovascular protective multifunctional therapeutic in an animal model simulating prehospital resuscitation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with hemorrhagic shock (HS) are reviewed. Preliminary results on the potential utility of PNPH for neurovascular protection in thrombolytic stroke therapy and for correction of vascular dysfunction through transfusion in sickle-cell disease (SCD) are also discussed. …

Postresuscitation cerebral blood flow (CBF) disturbances and generation of reactive oxygen species likely contribute to impaired neurologic outcome after pediatric cardiac arrest (CA). Hence, we determined the effects of the antioxidant colloid polynitroxyl albumin (PNA) versus albumin or normal saline (NS) on CBF and neurologic outcome after asphyxial CA in immature rats. We induced asphyxia for 9 minutes in male and female postnatal day 16 to 18 rats randomized to receive PNA, albumin, or NS at resuscitation from CA or sham surgery. Regional CBF was measured serially from 5 to 150 minutes after resuscitation by arterial spin-labeled magnetic resonance imaging. …

Inhibitory Effects Of Arabidopsis Earli1 Against Botrytis Cinerea And Bradysia Difformis, Zhen Du, Dan Xu, Lan Li, Yao Shi, Michael Schläppi, Zi-Qin Xu

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The aim of this study is to understand the function of EARLI1 in plants subjected to different biotic stresses using EARLI1 overexpressing (OX) and T-DNA knockout (KO) transgenic Arabidopsis lines. Higher levels of expression of EARLI1 in OX lines were confirmed by RT-PCR and Northern blot analysis. The full-length EARLI1 mRNA could not be detected by RT-PCR in KO lines, while only a shorter transcript could be found by RNA gel blotting. In wild-type Col-0 plants (Wt), EARLI1 could be induced by Botrytis cinerea and H2O2, indicating this gene might be involved in plant defense system …

BACKGROUND: The hemodynamics characteristics of the hybrid Norwood (HN) procedure differ from those of the conventional Norwood and are not fully understood. We present a multi-scale model of HN circulation to understand local hemodynamics and effects of aortic arch stenosis and a reverse Blalock-Taussig shunt (RBTS) on coronary and carotid perfusion. METHODS: Four 3-dimensional models of four HN anatomic variants were developed, with and without 90% distal preductal arch stenosis and with and without a 4-mm RBTS. A lumped parameter model of the circulation was coupled to a local 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. Outputs from the lumped parameter model …

History, Culture, And Religion In The Development Of Racial Ideology: A Case Study Of The Dutch Reformed Church Of South Africa And The Presbyterian Church Of America, Alexandria Claire Denton

Honors Theses

This thesis deals with the Christian religious tradition in relation to the ideology of white supremacy. By contrasting the history and ideologies of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa and the Presbyterian Church of America, this thesis will attempt to show that past history and the present culture affect the way religious communities interpret sacred texts. The primary objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the interactive role of history, culture, and religion within religious communities and society in order to breed conscious awareness of how these institutions are mutually effective. Religious adherents are not only products of their …

The Effect Of Calcium Concentration And Ph Levels On The Proteolysis Of The Two-Domain Neural-Cadherin Construct, Matthew Lafayette Dove Jan 2012

The Effect Of Calcium Concentration And Ph Levels On The Proteolysis Of The Two-Domain Neural-Cadherin Construct, Matthew Lafayette Dove

Honors Theses

Neural Cadherin (NCAD) Is a classical cadherin that plays a critical role In synaptogenesis and regulation of synaptic plasticity. One of Its characteristics as a classical cadherin Is Its calcium-dependent resistance to proteolytic cleavage. However, Candida albicans, the most common fungal pathogen of humans, has a virulence mechanism In which host tissue Is Invaded by degrading cadherin with secreted aspartyl proteases (SAPs). To Investigate the conditions In which this Invasive species proteolyzes cadherin, we used a-chymotrypsin as a model protease and the first two domains of Neural Cadherin (NCAD12). We performed time-dependent, Ca^^- dependent, and pH-dependent proteolysis of NCAD12 to …

An Investigation Of Host Variation In The Host-Parasite Interaction Of Sciurus Carolinensis And Cuterebra Emasculator, Miles Moore Debardeleben Jan 2012

An Investigation Of Host Variation In The Host-Parasite Interaction Of Sciurus Carolinensis And Cuterebra Emasculator, Miles Moore Debardeleben

Honors Theses

Within a population, susceptibility to parasitism may vary. Individuals possessing certain intrinsic or extrinsic traits are often more likely to be parasitized than individuals within that population that do not possess those certain traits. As a result, parasites can have profound effects of the population dynamics of theirs hosts. Much research has been done on the host-parasite interaction of the eastern grey squirrel {Sciurus caroUnensis) and the tree squirrel hot fly {Cuterebra emasculator). However, relatively little research has been done on host susceptibility to this parasite. Knowing that bot flies can lower reproductive success, reduce fitness, and cause death of …

The Effect Of Temperature And Turbidity On The Swimming Performance Of Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas)., Emily Katherine Hildebrandt Jan 2012

The Effect Of Temperature And Turbidity On The Swimming Performance Of Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas)., Emily Katherine Hildebrandt

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of turbidity and temperature on golden shiner critical swimming speed, and tail beat frequency, and how these relationships might be altered when fish are in a group. It was found that both temperature and turbidity positively affected critical swimming speeds; critical swimming speeds increased significantly with rising temperature and turbidity values. Tail beat frequencies increased with increasing temperature and turbidity, echoing the rise in critical swimming speed. A group effect was only evident at the lowest temperature for the highest turbidity, but tail beat frequencies indicate greater stress when alone …

Age-Structured Multispecies Model Of The Georges Bank Fish Community, Kiersten Lynn Curti Jan 2012

Age-Structured Multispecies Model Of The Georges Bank Fish Community, Kiersten Lynn Curti

Open Access Dissertations

Georges Bank has exhibited marked changes in ecosystem structure over the last half century. The community once dominated by groundfish and other finfish is now primarily composed of pelagic and elasmobranch species. Community dynamics are profoundly influenced by species interactions such as predation. The focus of this dissertation is to estimate the trophic interactions among fish species on Georges Bank. These species interactions are estimated by developing a multispecies, statistical catch-atage model of the Georges Bank fish community that explicitly quantifies the mortality due to predation.

Manuscript I: A submodel was developed for three important fish species on Georges Bank: …

The Environment In New York State, Michael B. Gerrard, Claire H. Woods Jan 2012

The Environment In New York State, Michael B. Gerrard, Claire H. Woods

Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the environmental policy in New York State. Science is significant as a driver of environmental policy, but public opinion is even more important. The story of the New York State's water supply is dominated by the historic quest to supply water to New York City. The State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) has been the most fertile source of environmental litigation in New York State courts. New York's solid waste expenditures have soared as it has had to pay commercial landfills and incinerators to take waste that had previously been cheaply dumped at Fresh Kills. New York …

Court Ruling Gives Green Light To Epa Ghg Regulations – Positive For Natural Gas, Renewables, And Efficient Vehicles, Mark Fulton, Michael B. Gerrard, Jake Baker, Lucy Cotter

Faculty Scholarship

On June 26, 2012, a panel from the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Court unanimously upheld the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) landmark greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations, keeping intact the EPA’s authority to regulate carbon emissions from vehicle tailpipes and stationary sources.

The case is of great importance as it effectively clears the way for the EPA to proceed with its proposed rules to regulate CO2 emissions from both new power plants and from other new stationary sources, in addition to pressing ahead with new vehicle emission standards.

The Quest For A Sustainable Future And The Dawn Of A New Journal At Michigan Law, David M. Uhlmann Jan 2012

The Quest For A Sustainable Future And The Dawn Of A New Journal At Michigan Law, David M. Uhlmann

Articles

When I joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School in 2007, the first assignment I gave students in my Environmental Law and Policy class was John McPhee's Encounters with the Archdruid. It must have seemed like a curious choice to them, particularly coming from a professor who just three months earlier had been the Chief of the Environmental Crimes Section at the U.S. Department of Justice. The book was not a dramatic tale of courtroom battles. In fact, the book was not even about the law, and the clash of environmental values it depicted pre-dated the environmental …

Apolipoprotein E Mimetic Peptide Improves Hdl Functionality And Inhibits Atherosclerosis Progression In Mouse Models Of Atherosclerosis, Gaurav Nayyar Jan 2012

Apolipoprotein E Mimetic Peptide Improves Hdl Functionality And Inhibits Atherosclerosis Progression In Mouse Models Of Atherosclerosis, Gaurav Nayyar

All ETDs from UAB

Despite major advances in diagnosis and treatment, coronary artery disease (CAD) is still the number one cause of morbidity and mortality in United States. An ideal treatment for lipid-mediated inflammatory disorders would not only reduce plasma cholesterol dramatically but also improve high density lipoproteins (HDL) function. Apolipoprotein E (apo E), a protein component of HDL and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), is necessary for the receptor mediated hepatic uptake of apolipoprotein-B (apo B) containing remnant lipoproteins and also possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties. We hypothesized that a synthetic dual domain apo E mimetic peptide, Ac-hE18A-NH2 (a 28-residue peptide) containing receptor binding …

Spontaneous early exposure of a dental implant's cover screw can result in a nidus for plaque accumulation, which may result in inflammation, damage to the peri-implant mucosa, and possible peri-implant bone loss. This study aims to investigate the effect of the addition of growth factors, specifically recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor, and platelet-rich plasma, at the time of socket conversion, on the incidence of early implant exposures. This retrospective study utilized data from a study involving a total of 80 implants that were placed in 4 different types of sites (Groups 1,2,3, and 4). Group 1 sites were extraction sites …

Physiological And Endocrine Factors Contributing To Acyclicity In The Captive Female African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Tina Lynn Dow Jan 2012

Physiological And Endocrine Factors Contributing To Acyclicity In The Captive Female African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Tina Lynn Dow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, the captive African elephant population in North America is not self-sustaining. An increase in acyclicity has been documented among post-pubertal females of all ages. Due to ethical issues and cost, importation of new animals is not feasible at this time; therefore, it is imperative that all post-pubertal females within zoological facilities be reproductively viable. The main objectives of these projects were to assess the reproductive status of the captive population and to identify contributing factors to acyclicity. In addition, prevention and treatment protocols were to be designed to promote reproductive proficiency in all reproductive-age females to avert the population …

Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris Jan 2012

Adolescent Autonomy Development And Problematic Eating Patterns, Kaitlyn A. Ferris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adolescence is a developmental time period associated with increased autonomy from parents and more independent decision-making. Adolescents strive to control areas of their life once solely controlled by parents, and food and eating decisions are two areas over which adolescents may want to have sole control. In addition, there may be heterogeneity in adolescents' beliefs about food-related behavior as well as adolescents' actual eating patterns. The current study examined parents' and adolescents' domain beliefs about food and whether adolescents' domain beliefs about such behaviors were associated with problematic eating patterns. Participants included 102 female caregiver-adolescent dyads with children between the …
