Individual Differences In Masculine Gender Socialization As Predictive Of Men's Psychophysiological Responses To Negative Affect, Jonathan D. Green, Michael E. Addis Jan 2012

Individual Differences In Masculine Gender Socialization As Predictive Of Men's Psychophysiological Responses To Negative Affect, Jonathan D. Green, Michael E. Addis

Psychology

We investigated a long-theorized relationship between individual differences in masculine gender socialization and avoidance of vulnerable negative affect. Participants were thirty-six men (faculty, staff, and students, M age = 21.40, age range 18-30, SD = 3.00, 3% Hispanic, 11% Asian, 86% Caucasian) recruited from a small university in the Northeastern United States. Adherence to masculine norms was positively associated with participants' physiological fear/avoidant responses to a video of a man violating masculine gender norms by expressing vulnerable negative affect (crying, asking for help, showing affection for another man). Results suggest that masculine gender socialization may cause some men to be …

The Eye Alone Is The Judge: Images And Design Patents, Rebecca Tushnet Jan 2012

The Eye Alone Is The Judge: Images And Design Patents, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Design patents are an area of intellectual property law focused entirely on the visual, unlike copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or the various sui generis protections that have occasionally been enacted for specific types of innovation. Judges and lawyers in general are highly uncomfortable with images, yet design patents force direct legal engagement with images. This short piece offers an outsider’s view of what design patent law has to say about the use of images as legal tools, why tests for design patent infringement are likely to stay unsatisfactory, and what lessons other fields of intellectual property, specifically copyright, might …

The First Father: Perspectives On The President's Fatherhood Initiative, Jessica Dixon Weaver Jan 2012

The First Father: Perspectives On The President's Fatherhood Initiative, Jessica Dixon Weaver

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This short article presents an analysis of the thirteen-year-old President's Fatherhood Initiative utilized by the executive branch to tackle the problem of absent fathers in America. It argues that this social policy attempts to recapture the economic incentives central to the controversial Moynihan Report of 1965, emphasizing patriarchal and classist solutions to America's family crisis. The programs instituted by the Fatherhood Initiative stigmatize black and brown fathers and fail to address underlying government policy issues that impact their ability to be present and financially supportive in their children's lives. The programs still emphasize the marriage dyad as a cure-all rather …

Virtual Into Verisimilitude: Videogames' Ability To Induce Empathy, Blake T. Bennett

CMC Senior Theses

The current study seeks to link traditional forms of empathy induction with new research that suggests videogames can be used as an experiential method of induction. One hundred-nine college students, sixty-four females and forty-six males, were used in a 2x2x2 design, the independent variables being prosocial/neutral videogame, empathic/neutral instructions, and gender. Dependent variables were both questionnaire responses to a fictional story and an opportunity to be realistically altruistic. Participants played either a prosocial or neutral videogame, received either empathic or neutral reading instructions, and then read a vignette depicting a difficult situation faced by the writer. They then rated their …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Alternative pre-mRNA processing is a central element of eukaryotic gene regulation. The cell frequently alters the use of alternative exons in response to physiological stimuli. Ceramides are lipid-signaling molecules composed of sphingosine and a fatty acid. Previously, water-insoluble ceramides were shown to change alternative splicing and decrease SR-protein phosphorylation by activating protein phosphatase-1 (PP1). To gain further mechanistical insight into ceramide-mediated alternative splicing, we analyzed the effect of C6 pyridinium ceramide (PyrCer) on alternative splice site selection. PyrCer is a water-soluble ceramide analog that is under investigation as a cancer drug. We found that PyrCer binds to the PP1 catalytic …

On Reason, Michael Christison Jan 2012

On Reason, Michael Christison

The Intellectual Standard

It challenges us to face the truth. It tells us when we are wrong. It can sometimes bewilder us with its brutal simplicity. Some call it logic or rational thinking. Others refer to it as "pure reason:' Whatever you want to call it, we have no choice but to utilize this cognitive ability if we want to achieve our goals. Few, however, tend to figure out what it is that they are doing. If you cannot explain reason, it becomes that much harder to justify any given action. If an action is not taken according to reason, a justification will …

Finding The Consistent Self, Jacob Comer Jan 2012

Finding The Consistent Self, Jacob Comer

The Intellectual Standard

Individual identity is absurd in itself. It is excessively complex. Each one of us has our own, so identity is not uniform between people. In fact, we generally think that its purpose is to distinguish ourselves from others as well as from just being that guy or girl over there. Sometimes, our identity is tied to another person, object, circumstance, or idea. Sometimes, it is just a feeling, a presence. And as time passes, the item to which we think our identity is bound changes. Perhaps, as adults, we will all find that thing that is "me': or so we …

Making Human Rights Really Real, Jake K. Bates Jan 2012

Making Human Rights Really Real, Jake K. Bates

The Intellectual Standard

In lieu of Illinois Wesleyan's "Making Human Rights Real" endeavors this school year, questions arise concerning the meaning of human rights and how we can effectively apply such a concept in the world around us. The discussion of human rights has long been one of the most contested among political philosophers and ordinary citizens alike. And rightfully so, because its conclusions hold drastic implications for individuals everywhere at all times. In order to avoid a muddled debate on the subject, it is critical to concretely define human rights. Thus, the concept of a "human;' the concept of a "right:' and …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A compound (1), [H_2-(4,4'-bipy)]^{2+}[(Cr_2O_7)]^{2-} and a metal organic-inorganic coordination framework (2), [Mn(4,4'-bipy)(Cr_2O_77)(H_2O)_2] (4,4'-bipy=4,4' -bipyridine) were successfully synthesized by microwave method. Their characterization was performed by single crystal X-ray crystallography and FT-IR spectroscopy. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a diprotonated 4,4'-bipyridium dichromate compound while compound 2 is an onedimensional (1D) polymer in which (Cr_2O_7)^{2-} acts as a bridging ligand supporting the formation of infinite {[Mn(4,4'-bipy)(Cr_2O_7)(H_2O)_2]}_n polymeric chains. The geometry of the 4,4'-bipy ring in 1 is typical coplanar, but twists in 2. In the free molecule 1, dichromate ligand adopts an eclipsed conformation, but adopts a staggered conformation in complex. …

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, And Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Activity Of Mononuclear Manganese(Ii) Complex With 2,2'-Bipyridine: [Mn(Bipy)_2(Clo_4)_2], İbrahi̇m Kani̇, Mehmet Kurtça

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A manganese(II) complex of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The activity of the complex was tested for oxidation of benzyl alcohols using t-BuOOH as an oxidant in organic solvents and in an organic/water biphasic system (hexane/H_2O, toluene/H_2O). The effect of solvent, temperature, oxidant, and some additives (KBr, N(C_4H_9)Br, and N-bromosuccinimide) on the oxidation of benzyl alcohol is reported. The results show that benzyl alcohol was selectively converted to benzaldehyde in 71.9% yield within 4 h in acetonitrile. Control experiments performed without catalyst and the corresponding metal salt as catalyst produced no benzaldehyde …

Insights Into Eisosome Assembly And Organization, Kyoungtae Kim, E. Murphy Jan 2012

Insights Into Eisosome Assembly And Organization, Kyoungtae Kim, E. Murphy

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Eisosomes, large protein complexes that are predominantly composed of BAR-domain-containing proteins Pil1 and its homologs, are situated under the plasma membrane of ascomycetes. A successful targeting of Pil1 onto the future site of eisosome accompanies maturation of eisosome. During or after recruitment, Pil1 undergoes self-assembly into filaments that can serve as scaffolds to induce membrane furrows or invaginations. Although a consequence of the invagination is likely to redistribute particular proteins and lipids to a different location, the precise physiological role of membrane invagination and eisosome assembly awaits further investigation. The present review summarizes recent research findings within the field regarding …

A Rapid And Inexpensive Bioassay To Evaluate The Decontamination Of Organophosphates, David M. Claborn, Skylar A. Martin-Brown, Sanjay Gupta Sagar, Paul L. Durham

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

An inexpensive and rapid bioassay using adult red flour beetles was developed for use in assessing the decontamination of environments containing organophosphates and related chemicals. A decontamination protocol was developed which demonstrated that 2 to 3 applications of 5% bleach solution were required to obtain nearly complete decontamination of malathion. The bioassay was also used to screen common household cleaners as potential decontaminating agents, but only 5% bleach was effective at improving survival of insects on steel plates treated with 25% malathion. A toxic degradation product (malaoxon) was detected using gas chromatography/ mass spectrophotometry; this toxin affected the decontamination efficacy …

Possible Early Foraminiferans In Post-Sturtian (716-635 Ma) Cap Carbonates, Tanja Bosak, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Sara B. Pruss, Francis A. Macdonald, Andrew J. Gooday, Lilly Dalton, Emily D. Matys

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Foraminifera are an ecologically important group of modern heterotrophic amoeboid eukaryotes whose naked and testate ancestors are thought to have evolved ~1 Ga ago. However, the single-chambered agglutinated tests of these protists appear in the fossil record only after ca. 580 Ma, coinciding with the appearance of macro scopic and mineralized animals. Here we report the discovery of small, slender tubular microfossils in the Sturtian (ca. 716-635 Ma) cap carbonate of the Rasthof Formation in Namibia. The tubes are 200-1300 μm long and 20-70μm wide, and preserve apertures and variably wide lumens, folds, constrictions, and ridges. Their sometimes fl exible …

Significant Beneficial Effect Of At-1 Receptor Blockers (Sartans) In Stroke, Marwan S. Al-Nimer

Neurosciences

Hypertension is the most important controllable and modifiable risk factor for stroke. The relationship between blood pressure and stroke mortality is strong and linear. Angiotensin receptor blockers (sartans) are competitive pharmacological antagonists of angiotensin II receptors, and some of them are approved for use in the treatment of hypertension. These drugs also show anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the cytokine levels. The anti-inflammatory effects of sartans play a role in reducing cerebral injury following stroke, and improve the outcome of stroke in terms of improving cognitive function. In humans, sartans are safe in hypertensive acute stroke patients and may offer advantages …
