Effects Of Ss3-Adrenergic Receptor Agonist On Gene Expression Of Leptin In Glioblastoma , Johnathan Lawrence, Nicholas J. Cook, Richard A. Rovin, Robert J. Belton Jr, Robert J. Winn

Journal Articles

In the 25 years since temozolomide entered phase I clinical trials, few new primary or adjuvant therapies have been developed for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors. Our laboratory has been exploring novel methods for the treatment of GBMs. Recent studies indicate that the expression of the hormone leptin and its receptor (OBR) increases in gliomas and positively correlates with the malignancy of the tumor. Interestingly, ß3-adrenergic receptor agonists are known to decrease leptin expression in adipocytes but have not been examined in GBM cells. We hypothesized that b3-adrenergic agonists downregulate the expression of leptin and its receptor. In …

Evaluation Of Algae Concentration In Manure Based Media, Maira Freire Pecegueiro Do Amaral Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Algae Concentration In Manure Based Media, Maira Freire Pecegueiro Do Amaral

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Algae can be used to treat wastewater and manure while producing a feedstock for renewable energy. Algae require nutrients to achieve their maximum growth and manure could provide those nutrients, thereby reducing the cost of algae production and the impact of manure treatment. Algae concentration during cultivation is a critical variable that is difficult to measure due to the high concentration of suspended solids present in manure. This dissertation addresses methods to measure algae concentration in the presence of manure solids.

Quantifying the algae concentration gravimetrically or by optical density was unreliable due to manure solids interfering with the measurement. …

The Common Reader And The Archival Classroom: Disciplinary History For The Twenty-First Century, Rachel Sagner Buurma, L. Heffernan Jan 2012

The Common Reader And The Archival Classroom: Disciplinary History For The Twenty-First Century, Rachel Sagner Buurma, L. Heffernan

English Literature Faculty Works

The essay draws on archival research to reconstruct the midcentury classrooms of Cleanth Brooks and Edmund Wilson. Our description of these classrooms - the participants, texts, and the exemplary as well as the undertheorized moments gathered within them - dissolves the divisions between research and teaching, historicist and formalist methods, skeptical critics and invested common readers, disciplinary spaces and public ones, that have particularly plagued the discipline of English in recent years. In Brooks's classroom - long figured as a foundational site for our discipline - we draw out, alongside Brooks's strong theory of the marginal and rarified status of …

Violence Against Adolescent Girls: A Fundamental Challenge To Meaningful Equality, Judith Bruce Jan 2012

Violence Against Adolescent Girls: A Fundamental Challenge To Meaningful Equality, Judith Bruce

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Societies, rich and poor alike, are increasingly articulating commitments that guarantee girls safe and equal access to entitlements, services, social participation, and economic opportunities. yet threats of violence in many forms intervene to prevent girls from claiming their rights. Many countries stipulate equality between males and females in their constitutions. Theoretically, safe access to resources and facilities is equally afforded to girls and boys, however a far higher proportion of boys and a smaller subset of usually more privileged girls may actually claim their rights and opportunities. The experience of violence is devastating at the individual emotional and physical level. …

La Santé Des Adolescentes Vulnérables : Un Investissement Stratégique Doublement Rentable, Jennifer Catino

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Contribution Of Acyl Amides To The Toxicity Of The Harmful Alga Prymnesium Parvum, Matthew John Bertin Jan 2012

The Contribution Of Acyl Amides To The Toxicity Of The Harmful Alga Prymnesium Parvum, Matthew John Bertin

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The golden alga Prymnesium parvum has been implicated in fish and aquatic animal kills globally for over a century. In addition to widespread ecological impacts through the loss of entire fish populations within lakes, an economic burden is also felt by state and local agencies due to losses of fish raised for stocking lakes and the loss of fishing and recreational use of the affected water body. Multiple compounds have been implicated in P. parvum toxicity, but the unequivocal identification and characterization of all P. parvum toxins remains to be accomplished. In this work we isolated and structurally characterized toxic …

Commissioning Innocence And Restoring Confidence: The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission And The Missing Deliberative Citizen, Mary Kelly Tate Jan 2012

Commissioning Innocence And Restoring Confidence: The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission And The Missing Deliberative Citizen, Mary Kelly Tate

Law Faculty Publications

Since 1989, the United States has witnessed 289 DNA exonerations, with exonerees serving an average of thirteen years in prison. Although DNA and its unmatched power for conclusive results is what brought popular attention to wrongful convictions, the scope of the problem is vastly larger than the number of known DNA exonerations. The actual number of convicted individuals who are factually innocent is unknown. The state of North Carolina has recently responded to this national crisis via a newly created state agency. This essay applauds North Carolina's response, but urges that ordinary citizens, qua jurors, be active participants in its …

Analogues Of The Epoxy Resin Monomer Diglycidyl Ether Of Bisphenol F: Effects On Contact Allergenic Potency And Cytotoxicity, Niamh O'Boyle, Tamara Delaine, Kristina Luthman, Andreas Natsch, Ann-Therese Karlberg

Articles

Diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and bisphenol F (DGEBF) are widely used as components in epoxy resin thermosetting products. They are known to cause occupational and non-occupational allergic contact dermatitis. The aim of this study is to investigate analogues of DGEBF with regard to contact allergy and cytotoxicity. A comprehensive knowledge of the structural features that contribute to the allergenic and cytotoxic effects of DGEBF will guide the development of future novel epoxy resin systems with reduced health hazards for those coming into contact with them. It was found that the allergenic effects of DGEBF were dependent on its …

Synthesis, Characterisation And Photo-Stability Of A Folate-Modified Β-Cyclodextrin As A Functional Food Additive., Zlata Tofzikovskaya, Christine O'Connor, Mary Mcnamara

Articles

A novel two-step synthetic route was developed and gave the mono-substituted derivative 6-deoxy-6-[(1-(2-amino)ethylamino)folate]-b-cyclodextrin (CDEnFA) with high yield (60 %). Elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies demonstrated the successful synthesis of the γ isomer only with no evidence of the presence of other isomers or free folic acid. Electronic absorption spectroscopy was used to study the photochemical properties of CDEnFA and showed that in both the solid state and aqueous solution CDEnFA is considerably more photo-stable than free folic acid.

Reproductive Freedom And Virginia's 2012 General Assembly Session, Katherine Greenier Jan 2012

Reproductive Freedom And Virginia's 2012 General Assembly Session, Katherine Greenier

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

While the Governor approved H.B. 462, the mandatory ultrasound bill, H.B. 62, H.B. 1285, and S.B. 637 failed in the General Assembly.37 As introduced this 2012 session, H.B. 1 contained different bill language than the prior years it has been introduced. H.B. 62, H.B. 1285, and S.B. 637 were new bills, not seen in past years. An analysis and overview of these measures sheds light on the increasing attempts and the tactics used by legislators to undermine reproductive freedom.

The Law Of Cyber-Attack, Rebecca Crootof, Oona A. Hathaway Jan 2012

The Law Of Cyber-Attack, Rebecca Crootof, Oona A. Hathaway

Law Faculty Publications

Cyber-attacks have become increasingly common in recent years. Capable of shutting down nuclear centrifuges, air defense systems, and electrical grids, cyber-attacks pose a serious threat to national security. As a result, some have suggested that cyber-attacks should be treated as acts of war. Yet the attacks look little like the armed attacks that the law of war has traditionally regulated. This Article examines how existing law may be applied-and adapted and amended-to meet the distinctive challenge posed by cyber-attacks. It begins by clarifying what cyber-attacks are and how they already are regulated by existing bodies of law, including the law …

Development Of A Bi-Directional Electronics Platform For Advanced Neural Applications, Luca Abbati Jan 2012

Development Of A Bi-Directional Electronics Platform For Advanced Neural Applications, Luca Abbati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work presents a high-voltage, high-precision bi-directional multi-channel system capable of stimulating neural activity through bi-phasic pulses of amplitude up to ∓50 V while recording very low-voltage responses as low as tens of microvolts. Most of the systems reported from the scientific community possess at least one of the following common limitations: low stimulation voltages, low gain capabilities, or insufficient bandwidth to acquire a wide range of different neural activities.

While systems can be found that present remarkable capabilities in one or more specific areas, a versatile system that performs over all these aspects is missing. Moreover, as many novel …
