Exploring The Two-Year College Faculty Work Experience: The Active Job, The Evolving Institution And The Changing Effort-Reward Bargain, Jacobs Wayne Hammond

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

While significant research describes the occupational experiences of four-year college and university faculty, two-year college faculty have received little attention from scholars. This study enters the existing void. Fourteen two-year college faculty members from a variety of institutions in Minnesota were interviewed utilizing a semi-structured depth interview technique. Questions were derived from sociological and interdisciplinary literature pertaining to the higher education faculty experience. Two-year college faculty were found to hold active jobs, work in evolving institutions and face a decreasing effort-reward bargain. Faculty were also found to be susceptible to experiencing role strain, stress derived from group-decision making processes and …

Are There Roles For Technical Communicators In Small Community Food Systems?, Brent William Chisholm Jan 2012

Are There Roles For Technical Communicators In Small Community Food Systems?, Brent William Chisholm

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The author explores the viability of incorporating technical communication genres, practices, and theory, into various components of small community food systems. He argues that certain types of food systems and users in those food systems allow technical communicators to participate in ways aligning with genres of conservation writing described by Johnson-Sheehan and Morgan (2009). He also incorporates ideas about authorship, describing that technical communicators can improve food systems by reconciling disparate agricultural technical material, advocacy for action, and the articulation of previously non-existent food systems.

Trap Efficiency Of A Silted Prairie Reservoir: Rapidan Reservoir, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Katherine Brosch Rassmussen Jan 2012

Trap Efficiency Of A Silted Prairie Reservoir: Rapidan Reservoir, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Katherine Brosch Rassmussen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Rapidan Dam and Reservoir are located along the Blue Earth River south of Mankato, Minnesota. The dam was constructed in 1911 as a source of hydroelectric power to supplement the surroundings communities. Currently, the reservoir is heavily silted and provides little hydroelectric benefit while proving costly to maintain. This study (1) defines the sedimentary, geomorphic, stream flow and suspended load characteristics of the reservoir for 2008-2009 and (2) compares these parameters with those available from 1985 (23 years prior). Stream gauging and sediment sampling took place in 2008 and 2009 at three monitoring locations (two upstream and one downstream of …

Trace Element Accumulation In Rice :Effects Of Soil Arsenic, Irrigation Management, Phosphate Application And Iron Oxide Amendment, Eric Michael Farrow

Masters Theses

A concern is growing over the accumulation of trace contaminants in rice, a plant which has been estimated to supply 50% of the caloric intake to the world's population. Contamination with arsenic (As) and other trace elements have been shown in many areas including the U.S. and rice intake poses a potential risk to human health. This research investigated the accumulation of selected trace elements including arsenic (As), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo) and cadmium (Cd) in as many as six rice cultivars and two control soils common to the south central U.S. A field study was completed to evaluate the …

Sex On The Bench: Do Women Judges Matter To The Legitimacy Of International Courts?, Nienke Grossman Jan 2012

Sex On The Bench: Do Women Judges Matter To The Legitimacy Of International Courts?, Nienke Grossman

Chicago Journal of International Law

International courts are playing an increasingly important role in deciding international disputes and in defining the content of international law. Yet women make up only a meager percentage of international court judges. This Article explores the relationship between the paucity of women judges and the legitimacy of international courts. After providing statistics on women's participation on eleven of the world's most important courts and tribunals, the Article argues that under-representation of one sex affects the normative legitimacy of international courts because it endangers impartiality and introduces bias when men and women approach judging differently. Even if men and women do …

Speaking For The Seas Examining And Promoting Sustainable Seafood In The Chesapeake Bay, Courtney A. Smith Jan 2012

Speaking For The Seas Examining And Promoting Sustainable Seafood In The Chesapeake Bay, Courtney A. Smith

Theses & ETDs

Technological developments in the fisheries sector allow fishing fleets to extract greater quantities of fish than ever before. To expand their allowable catch limits, some fisheries choose to evade regulatory efforts intended to protect marine stocks by illegally harvesting fish, causing further exploitation of the world's finite marine resources. To reduce the frequency of illegal, underreported, and unregulated fishing, fisheries can undergo sustainable certification, which verifies to consumers that the product was not harvested using harmful fishing practices. Consumers and harvesters benefit from the consumer's increased knowledge of sustainable alternatives can lead to support for eco-labeled products. Through social marketing, …

Polar Bear Sport Hunting In Nunavut, Canada Perspectives On Polar Bear Conservation And The Endangered Species Act, Tait Mandler Jan 2012

Polar Bear Sport Hunting In Nunavut, Canada Perspectives On Polar Bear Conservation And The Endangered Species Act, Tait Mandler

Theses & ETDs

Polar bears are the iconic symbol of the Arctic and the imminent changes to this ecosystem. As an ice-obligate marine mammal, polar bears are found circumpolar in 19 subpopulations, with 13 in Canada. Concerns about potential impacts climate change will have on the Arctic environment prompted listing polar bears under the United States Endangered Species Act. Previously, US sport hunters were able to participate in certain Canadian Inuit-led polar bear hunts in subpopulations having scientifically established quotas. After the ESA listing, US importation of polar bear trophies was prohibited and the US, in effect, surrendered its ability to influence which …

Exploring The Perceptions And Experiences Of Inductive Teachers In Secondary Education: How Do Inductive Teachers Find Their Place In The Teaching Profession, And What Motivates Them To Remain In The Field?, Jaliene R. Hollabaugh

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of my study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of inductive teachers in secondary education. My purposive sample included 11 licensed, inductive teachers from 10 different schools spanning eight school districts within a large metropolitan area of the Pacific Northwest. I used personal interviews, within a microethnographic research design, to explore four issues related to inductive teachers: (1) the process of entering the teaching profession, (2) significant personal and professional transitions, (3) motivations for remaining or not remaining in the field, and (4) perceptions on self-defined roles. Five thematic claims emerged from the results of my research …

Geochemistry And Release Of Contaminants From Cohesive Sediments Of The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire, Vincent Percuoco Jan 2012

Geochemistry And Release Of Contaminants From Cohesive Sediments Of The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire, Vincent Percuoco

Master's Theses and Capstones

The role of cohesive sediments as a source of nutrients and metals to the Great Bay Estuary, NH was investigated by analyzing the porewater of several sediment cores obtained from three fields sites. Contaminant fluxes were compared between several release mechanisms including: molecular diffusion calculated from porewater profiles, bioturbation during core incubations, and sediment resuspension under simulated erosion. Ammonium, phosphate, silica, and nitrate accumulation in porewater lead to diffusive fluxes of 0.3-2, 0-0.5, 0.3-2, and -0.1-0.1 mmol m~2 day-1 respectively. Fluxes from bioturbation were on the same order of magnitude. Under simulated erosion, nutrient fluxes were over an order of …

Invertebrate Abundances And Diversity Of A Six Year Old Organic Apple Orchard In Northwest Arkansas, Cory Johnson, Brina Smith, Mary C. Savin

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Ground cover mulch applications in perennial systems can have multiple benefits, one of which may be to enhance the size and diversity of the ground surface faunal community. To determine if ground cover and organic fertilizer applications altered invertebrate communities, litters in an experimental 0.4-ha organic apple orchard in Fayetteville, Ark. were sampled during a four week period beginning in February 2012. The orchard was planted in 2006 in a replicated 4 × 3 factorial design with organic ground cover and fertilizer treatments applied annually each April. Invertebrates were extracted using Berlese funnels and hand sorting techniques. Ground covers (wood …

A Survey Assessing The Contributing Factors To Substance Abuse Treatment In U.S. Corrections Settings, Michael Soule Jan 2012

A Survey Assessing The Contributing Factors To Substance Abuse Treatment In U.S. Corrections Settings, Michael Soule

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

In light of the dramatic rise in incarceration due to the "War on Drugs," we explored the contributing factors to substance abuse treatment (SAT) programming - in particular, evidence-based treatments like medication assisted therapy (MAT) - implementation in United States correctional settings (including jails, prisons, and community corrections facilities). We hypothesized that current funding availability would be the primary factor preventing and contributing to program implementation, but further hypothesized that an array of secondary factors such as overcrowding, geographic location, facility type, and attitudes and knowledge about MAT would also play a role. We mailed a survey to an enriched …

The Legacy Of Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) And The Development Of Mathematical Models In Biological Oceanography, Thomas R. Anderson, Wendy C. Gentleman Jan 2012

The Legacy Of Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) And The Development Of Mathematical Models In Biological Oceanography, Thomas R. Anderson, Wendy C. Gentleman

Journal of Marine Research

Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) is remembered for his pioneering work in the development of marine ecosystem models during the mid-20th century. Using models that were necessarily simple because of the limited understanding of plankton physiology at the time, as well as the fact that calculations had to be done by hand, Riley studied the processes that control plankton stocks, production, and nutrient cycling, notably at Georges Bank. His great achievement lay not so much in the simulation of plankton dynamics per se, but rather in bringing to the fore the concept of using modeling as a means of explaining …

Detailed Internal Wave Mixing Above A Deep-Ocean Slope, Hans Van Haren, Louis Gostiaux Jan 2012

Detailed Internal Wave Mixing Above A Deep-Ocean Slope, Hans Van Haren, Louis Gostiaux

Journal of Marine Research

Turbulent vertical eddy diffusivity (Kz) and dissipation rate (ε) are estimated between 0.5 and 50 m above the sloping side of Great Meteor Seamount, Canary Basin, using 101 moored temperature sensors, 1-mK precision, sampling at 1 Hz. Effectively, detailed observed time-depth temperature images are split in two: a statically stable and a turbulence image. Tides dominate the temperature variations, but the local bottom slope is supercritical to motions at semidiurnal frequencies. Averaged over a fortnight, the observed overall time-depth mean Kz = 3±1 × 10–3 m2 s–1 and ε = 1.5±0.7 × 10–7 W …

A Tribute To Doreen Orciari, George Veronis Jan 2012

A Tribute To Doreen Orciari, George Veronis

Journal of Marine Research

With her retirement this year Doreen Orciari will end her 36th year at Yale, 32 of them as editorial assistant at the Journal of Marine Research. She came to work for me as my secretary in December, 1976, when I was chairman of the Department of Geology and Geophysics. It turns out that she was the best Christmas present that I have ever had. Doreen was born and raised as an Irish Catholic in New Haven and spent her youth in somewhat of a dysfunctional family. She spent 12 years amid Catholic nuns who served to add structure to her …

The Rise And Fall Of Crassostrea Virginica Oyster Reefs: The Role Of Disease And Fishing In Their Demise And A Vignette On Their Management, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klinck, Kathryn Ashton-Alcox, Eileen E. Hofmann, Jason Morson Jan 2012

The Rise And Fall Of Crassostrea Virginica Oyster Reefs: The Role Of Disease And Fishing In Their Demise And A Vignette On Their Management, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klinck, Kathryn Ashton-Alcox, Eileen E. Hofmann, Jason Morson

Journal of Marine Research

We describe a model designed to simulate the shell carbonate budget of an oyster reef. We identify five parameters descriptive of basic characteristics of the shell carbonate budget of a reef that limit simulation accuracy. Two describe the TAZ (taphonomically-active zone) and the distribution of shell carbonate within it. One is the taphonomic rate in the TAZ. Two determine the volume contribution of shell carbonate and the taphonomic loss rate within the reef framework. For Mid-Atlantic estuaries, model simulations suggest that reef accretion only occurs if oyster abundance is near carrying capacity. Simulations further suggest that reef accretion is infeasible …

Baroclinic Instability Of An Idealized Tidal Mixing Front, K. H. Brink Jan 2012

Baroclinic Instability Of An Idealized Tidal Mixing Front, K. H. Brink

Journal of Marine Research

Tidal mixing fronts separate vertically homogenized waters from stratified ambient waters. The linear and nonlinear baroclinic stability of an idealized tidal mixing front is treated here in the parameter range that is stable with regard to symmetric instabilities and that has no bottom friction. All model configurations considered are unstable, and the dependence on bottom slope, stratification and other parameters is similar to that suggested by models (such as that of Blumsack and Gierasch, 1972) with much simpler configurations. The finite-amplitude evolution of the instabilities is treated using a primitive equation numerical model. The initial length scale and growth rate …

Hurricane Wake Restratification Rates Of One-, Two- And Three-Dimensional Processes, S. Haney, S. Bachman, B. Cooper, S. Kupper, K. Mccaffrey, L. Van Roekel, S. Stevenson, B. Fox-Kemper Jan 2012

Hurricane Wake Restratification Rates Of One-, Two- And Three-Dimensional Processes, S. Haney, S. Bachman, B. Cooper, S. Kupper, K. Mccaffrey, L. Van Roekel, S. Stevenson, B. Fox-Kemper

Journal of Marine Research

The restratification of the cold wakes of Tropical Cyclones Fanapi, Frances, Igor and Katrina are examined based on derived scalings for processes that can restore the hurricane wake toward the precyclone conditions. The different restoration processes depend on the parameters of the wake: depth, width, buoyancy anomaly and wind stress. The parameters needed are derived for each wake from satellite and climatological data. The scalings are based on model results and existing parameterizations, including air-sea heat fluxes (one-dimensional) Ekman buoyancy fluxes (two-dimensional) and mixed layer eddies (three-dimensional). The dominant surface restoration occurs by a combination of surface fluxes and Ekman …

Further Support For Mental Health Parity Law And Mandatory Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Benefits, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

In this Article, I provide additional support for my recent proposal* to extend federal mental health parity law and mandatory mental health and substance use disorder benefits to all public healthcare program beneficiaries and private health plan members. I begin by examining health-related doctrine outside the context of mental health insurance law, including disability discrimination law, civil rights and human rights law, health information confidentiality law, healthcare reform law, and child and adult health and welfare law, and I find that not one of these laws provides inferior legal protections or benefits for individuals with mental illness. I also analyze …
